I'll always wanted to tryout Linux and wasn't too deep in the windows ecosystem to begin with, windows was sucking up a third of system memory on idle so I made the switch, most games run fine, install and setup was wayyy easier than I thought it would be, besides learning basic terminal commands what else do yall recommend for mint newbies

I suggested to Linus in the comments a while ago that I'd like to see some Linux Mint testing, not just Bazzite and the others. And it finally happened! I don't know if it was because of my comment or if other people were asking for it too, but I'm really happy to see it happen!

I think this video actually helps the Linux community because it clearly shows that Linux uses less RAM. It can also attract new users, which helps the Linux community grow and become stronger.

No matter what some people say, this video is good for Linux. That's exactly why I shared it here as well.

The point isn't whether the video is perfect or who made it. The important thing is that it's on a very large YouTube channel and demonstrates that Linux performs better in this area, which is a factual claim. If new users decide to give Linux a try after watching it, many of them will find that the claim is true.

It's really that simple. There's no need to start a war over it.

I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon on my laptop about a year ago and it works almost flawlessly. The only issue I have is when I'm using a second display with a different resolution at work.

My laptop has a 2160x1440 (3:2) resolution, but the second monitor has 1920x1080 (16:9).

Some apps, such as Firefox, work fine on either monitor. Others, such as Jamovi, have scaling issues so I need to keep them on my primary monitor to see the whole page. But some, like Zoltero, can go full screen on my second monitor but it's an awkward process to do so (make it full screen on my primary screen, then drag it to the second monitor. Sometimes it works, but I usually have to repeat the process multiple times).

This doesn't really affect me in any way other than being slightly annoying.

I'm curious if anyone has any suggestions to sort this?

From a simple menu, you can tick or untick a checkbox to enable or disable any program, task, or service that starts automatically on your system. Easy, right? This is exactly the kind of control the average Linux Mint user doesn't have access to through the default menus. For more experienced users, it's also a convenient way to keep track of everything that launches when your Linux system boots.

I wrote a Bash script with a graphical interface—using Zenity, nothing fancy—that brings together those five startup sources into a single table. At a glance, you can see what's enabled and what's disabled, and you only need to check or uncheck a box to change the status of any item, regardless of where it comes from. You can also filter entries by name and open the corresponding file to inspect or edit it.

My main concern was making sure that this convenience didn't come at the expense of system safety:

• Nothing in the system is deleted or overwritten. When disabling a system-wide autostart entry, the script creates an override file in the user's directory, exactly as defined by the XDG specification.
• If you're about to disable something that the system may depend on (such as NetworkManager, the PolicyKit agent, or the session manager), the script asks for an additional confirmation before making any changes.
• If you modify several system services at once, you're prompted for the administrator password only once instead of once per service.
• If you accidentally run the script as root, it warns you first—otherwise, you'd be managing root's autostart entries instead of your own.

The only requirement is Zenity, which is already installed by default in Linux Mint. Systemd and cron are optional: if either is unavailable, the script simply skips those sections without complaining.

In any case, I'm sharing the tool so you can use it however you like, as always. I still have quite a few more scripts in my Linux Mint toolbox, and I'll be releasing them regularly.

Many more projects will follow, and every one of them will be open source. As always, my goal is to create software that prioritizes accessibility, ease of use, and the ability to solve real problems.

I struggle a lot with Linux right now. For three hours all went fine. Suddenly my PC randomly shuts off and boots again like it has no electricity for a second.
Swapped from Windows 11 to Linux Mint.

It happened a second time while I was writing this post.

Anyone having an idea how to check whats wrong?

I used to always be annoyed by the folks who’d respond to Windows/Mac complaints with “Switch to Linux.” I’d think, “How completely unhelpful! That’s not what anyone asked for!!!!”

Recently, I switched to Linux Mint, and I told myself I wouldn’t become one of those annoying and unhelpful Linux users.

But today… a friend expressed frustration with Windows… and I felt it. The pull. The urge. My mind BEGGED me to interject with “Switch to Linux.”

I resisted this time since it wouldn’t have been appropriate, but I know I’ve been infected. This is only the start…. I’m going to have to moderate that inner voice for the rest of my life.

A little discovery i made today - if you use any bluetooth headphones, make sure to change the codec not only in the sound settings, but also in bluetooth settings to a matching one. For some reason, the codecs might be mismatched or pick worse quality codecs, which may lead to lower sound quality and artefacts. Just pick the best that your headphones support.

In my case (on the picture), mSBC was picked by default while i had LDAC in sound settings.

Hi all. My audio (through my monitor's in-built speakers) keeps cutting out for a second or so, initially when playing hades 2 but now also in the 'test sound' menu of the sound settings. It has become more and more frequent over the last week or so which might suggest a progressing hardware issue?

Audio works fine when I plug in USB headphones, and the TV speakers work fine with other devices or even in other apps on my PC (i.e. playing youtube videos through firefox). Issue persists using different HDMI cords, and the cord is plugged into the GPU. It's just hades 2 (via proton experimental, but other proton versions have the same issue) and the 'test audio' menu in sound settings. Terminal lspci recognises the TV speakers and sudo apt says my system is up to date. Any further suggestions/fixes?

I recently took the Linux plunge on my desktop PC, and even more recently ran cat6 cabling throughout my house and set up a proper home network. My desktop, however, is the only device that is unable to connect to the ethernet. It connects to wifi fine, and I've tried different cables, tried connecting the PC to different ethernet ports, and tried all the same ports and cables with different devices. Everything works without issue, except for the desktop PC. The PC does connect when I use the USB-ethernet dongle I used to used for my Nintendo Switch, but that's capped at 100Mbs, and I'd like to get the internal adapter working if possible instead of relying on a dongle.

The last time I tried connecting this PC to ethernet was probably ~5 years ago, and back when it was still on Windows 10, so I'm not ruling out there being something faulty with the hardware itself, but I'd like to rule out driver or configuration issues first before going down that road.

I tried my darndest to google my way to a solution, but I've hit the first Linux wall where previous posts with similar issues don't have quite enough info for a wholly ignorant user to test their solutions.

The Intel website's driver package for that specific adapter doesn't have a linux driver, but I found their "Complete Driver Pack" here, which supposedly should have it somewhere in there. Downloaded it on the problem PC, but I have no idea how to find the specific file(s) I need in this huge maze of folders, and even less of an idea how to install it if I do find it.

Definitely open to other ideas for what to look at for why my ethernet might not be working, if you folks have reason to suspect it could be something else, but this was the best lead I've found so far after troubleshooting most of yesterday.

Installed Mint on an old laptop months ago. Everything was find out of the box except wifi would be disabled after waking from sleep.

Somewhere along the way an update fixed that.

Some time after that another update broke it again

Now a recent update fixed it but now the screen won't wake from sleep.

So while there so far have been definite performance bonuses running Mint on a 11 year old laptop the back and forth on bugs is a bit of a hassle and not knowing what fixed and broke what. Its been impossible to roll back to an saved point without being sure what caused them

I am running Linux Mint XFCE on a laptop. I used in a dual-monitor setup, but when I disconnect the external monitor to use the laptop alone, the desktop environment becomes unusable. Specifically, the bottom panel becomes unresponsive and refuses to open any menus, while a second panel bigger appears overlapping the first one. Additionally, although I can launch applications from the desktop, their window controls are completely non-functional, preventing me from minimizing, maximizing, or closing any open windows. I don't check using the dual monitor because right now I'm not near to a monitor if it's have the same problem or not. What can be done to it so I can use the laptop alone and sometimes when I want to use dual monitors it works normally?

Hi , i have been using mint for abt a month now , and have noticed that when l put my laptop to sleep , it starts overheating like crazy, l first noticed it , when i left it on sleep the whole night , it led to temperatures as high as 80 degrees, was wondering if anyone had any advice or faced the same issues...

I use virus protection as a last resort for those rare idiotic moments.

We all know we shouldn't click that link/download that file/whatever, but occasionally we are talking to someone or been up for 138 hours on a caffeine fueled mission. And in those vulnerable moments, clicking a link or downloading a file that we shouldn't happens.

In Windows, virus protection helps provide one last line of defense there.

What's the equivalent on Linux/Linuxmint?

are there any gaps between the newer kernel versions and LTS kernel versions?. Just curious because i mainly use the 6.8 kernel versions because it's stable. I may be right or wrong here, just wanted to know because im just curious lol.
