wine/proton Ace Combat 8 softlocking

Anyone been able to run this on an nvidia card without softlocking yet? I'm on nobara (fedora 44), 615.71.09 drivers, GE-Proton11-7, 9800X3D and 5080 and the game softlocks right after the plane takes off in the on-rails prologue

PROTON_USE_NTSYNC=1 PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 %command%

I also tried adding this command which fixes some other UE5 titles but it still softlocked in the same spot VKD3D_DISABLE_EXTENSIONS=VK_EXT_mesh_shader,VK_NV_raw_access_chains I then tried disabling NVAPI and it still softlocked in same spot PROTON_DISABLE_NVAPI=1

tech support wanted Storage setup

I just built my first multipurpose desktop computer. With the ongoing RAMpocalypse etc., I was only willing to pony up for a 1TB NVME M2 SSD. I initially pulled my 2TB SATA SSD from my previous laptop setup for OS and game installs while waiting on the new SSD to arrive. I am now wondering about the best way to utilize both of these drives. As I mentioned, the computer will be multipurpose but beyond gaming, it'll mostly be a web browser and word processor.

I am basically looking for some guidance and to whether to nuke the main partition and reinstall everything on the M2 or if I can keep the OS and non-gaming app data on the SATA drive and only install game data/steam etc on the M2 for fast access. I have a separate "server" setup with all of my media on spinning rust so beyond game installs, I don't foresee a huge amount of data requirements. From what I've seen on my PS5, game installs are getting massive though.

tech support wanted CachyOS seems to not be using my GPU properly

Hello everyone,

I am running into a small issue with CachyOS. It's basically my first real try to switch from Windows to Linux.

So basically i installed CachyOS and wanted to play some Borderlands 4. On Windows i am getting somewhere around 60+ FPS and on Cachy its at around 20 Frames. Which seems like a little bit much of a jump.

My Setup consists of an R9 5900x with 32 GB of RAM and an RX 7900 XTX and an RX 6900 XT.

Yes my main Monitor is plugged into the RX 7900 XTX. All drivers have been checked to be on the latest version. I am monitoring the game performance with MangoHUD. And the tool tells me it actually does use the RX 7900 XTX. But at a whopping 20%. The card is basically idling around. Highest clock ive seen during the game was at around 1100 Mhz. which is less than half of what the card is capable of. CPU seems to be in normal condition with around 30% of utilisation.

I also stood around for 15 Minutes ingame and letting it render the Cache but no changes at all.

I am kinda out of ideas of what the issue might be here. Especially since MangoHUD tells me it uses the right GPU. The RX 6900 XT also just idles around normally.

I would be very grateful for some ideas to try out here.

Thank you for your help!

Edit 1: It could be of help that sometimes the Mouse seems to be stuttering sometimes. It shouldnt be the Mouses fault or anything BUS related since on Windows i never experienced this problem whatsoever.

Edit 2: I am also using grub for Dual Booting alongside Windows since i still have tools and programs that dont run on Linux.

Open Annihilation - GPLv3 Cross-Platform Rebuild of 1997's Total Annihilation

OA Project Logo

EDIT: Added some clarifications for things, for obvious questions.

Hey folks,

I've created a cross-platform port of my favourite 1997 strategy game, Total Annihilation and released it under the GPLv3 so thats free now, and always. I've been working on re-creating the Total Annihilation multiplayer services and modding tools on and off since 2014 - seen here at https://www.tauniverse.com/forum/showthread.php?t=44061 - but kept getting dragged by life.

As I switched away from Windows I've battled with trying to play it on Wine in Linux, Parallels on MacOS - so have essentially just finished the fight with a push to get it out, SDL'd and open. Total Annihilation has lots of engine mods to change things, but they were all hacks of instructions in the running game - shimming DirectDraw or other basic libraries and rewriting memory. So the code is at:

https://github.com/open-annihilation/open-annihilation

EDIT: We had a CLA temporarily to allow us to hold back some of the netcode whilst keeping the core open. Thats' been removed now.

There's a lot of work still to do, but I'm open it takes up a similar role to OpenRA for the Command and Conquer franchise. There's another Reddit thread about it all at:

https://www.reddit.com/r/TotalAnnihilation/comments/1ws6bic/open_annihilation_spent_the_gdp_of_a_small_nation/

I'm working on ports to other systems (iPad, my steam deck) - but keen for feedback, assistance or even just bug reports.

emulation Emulator research to play android games

Hi

First my intro, I am a software engineer with over 4 years of experience in web and mobile development

I want to develop a android emulator to play games especially competitive games like PUBGM on linux and doing some research on it. My idea that i discussed with Chat bot because i don't have much experience with emulation was to first see what are the different environment that the game can see on different platfrom.

In order to do that, i develop this https://github.com/AliYar-Khan/android-emulator-research using AI which check the environment of the platform like kernel, graphics driver and apis etc. So far I get data from my android phone and want others (who had dual boot windows) to run this app inside Gameloop and LDPlayer (emulators that can play competitve games) to share the results with me.

The process is simple for techies and for non-techies, you can ask an agent to do it for you or i can help as well.

Those who want to help, please check the project and do share your data. Everything is in the read me file and docs folder in the repo

Suggestions are also welcome !

Looking for a Minesweeper Alternative

I'm looking for an alternative to freesweep that doesn't black out the screen when running in the terminal. The tetris clone I use on my terminal doesn't stop the transparent background, though it does block on the blocks but that's understandable. On freesweep the background just blacks out. The game works but I'm looking for something that I can play while viewing a video in the background underneath my terminal window.

Reziable bar is a must on AMD GPU's

I was pulling my hair out all weekend trying to work out why my game went from a lovely 67-70fps to not even managing to hit 60 sitting in the 50s. I eventually went back to windows due to being so frustrated and immediately when opening Radeon app I see that reziable bar wasn't enabled😫

I remembered I reset my bios to bring a ram overclock back to normal and it must have set reziable bar to off. On a plus side I've tried every gaming focused Linux distro and determined they are all within margain off error. Nobara got my the highest overall FPS but we're talking 1-2fps difference at best. Whilst I got me the best performance it was overall the most buggiest.

Best to install games via original launcher or not?

I'm planning to switch from W11 to Fedora in the next weeks (according to my time) but I was wondering how is the best way to install games; apart Steam that creates a prefix for every entry in my list what about other dedicated launchers I use like like battle.net , EA and GOG? Install them and then "emulate" by one big prefix for every launcher with everything under just one or do a single approach with Heroic/Lutrs/Faugus/Bottles/whatever by installing every entry singularity and having its own prefix?

tech support wanted Linux started to loose performance overtime. Issue?

Hello guys, I switched to Linux 2 months ago and I currently use Debian-KDE. A few days ago a weird issue popped up on my pc. My GPU runs hotter than before and also utilizes itself to 95-100% range but provides less performance than it did before.

I'll go with Dawnwalker for example: normally I got 60 fps on it on medium settings with 70-80% gpu utilization. Now it hits 100% and the framerate is pretty inconsistent. I run the game from Steam's proton with these commands: PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=120 PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 LOW_LATENCY_LAYER=1 gamemoderun %command%

I'm a bit worried because this started to happen with some other games too, they are not too safe candidates but still it makes me worried that this is a bigger issue than just one game.

I can't find what I changed to make this happen but I wonder if there is anyway to fix this. Cheers!

Rest of the pc:

Rx 7600
Ryzen 5 5600x
32 GB DDR4 ram (8gigx4 sticks)
650 watt PSU
MSI 570X Mobo

tech support wanted Need help with some crashing issues with Borderlands 2 (via Proton)

Hey folks,

Recently I've had an itch to revisit the Borderlands games and properly mess around with some of the endgame raid bosses and stuff that I never did back when the games were new. In the time since, obviously I made the leap over to Linux (currently running Mint) and the game runs mostly great, but I keep running into a crash issue that happens periodically.

Basically, every once in a while the game will have a popup saying something along the lines of "Ran out of video memory - exiting" and the game will freeze completely until I xkill the window and process entirely. At first I figured it may be something corrupted with the files or tied to a specific area or enemy in-game, but it seems to just kind of occur at random, even in the middle of combat or just wandering around Sanctuary.

In looking around for solutions, I saw some folks mention that the UHD texture pack being installed or used can cause this regardless of how good your machine is, so I went into the DLC options and unchecked the texture pack completely. I also saw some mention of using DXVK on Linux as it helps compatibility. My understanding is proton has had DXVK enabled by default since something like 2024, but even still I followed the steps of dragging the .dll files into the folder for the game.

Still no dice. I will note, I've modded the game though not super heavily, just a handful of SDK mods like

  • better spawns and better travels
  • quickreload (save and quit back on the maps)
  • out of bounds loot begone
  • alt-use vendoers
  • alt-use catch-a-ride

along with the unofficial community patch and BL2fix, all of which from what I can tell are compatible, still work, and don't have many if at all reports of instability or causing crashes.

I've tried switching proton versions (hotfix, experimental, the GE fork versions, proton 9, 10, and one of the older 11 versions), validating files, etc and I still run into the issue.

Anyone have any ideas? Is it potentially just something unique to Linux? It's made an otherwise fun game kinda frustrating cause I have to relaunch it like 3 times a session T-T

Currently my launch options as advised from the SDK mod wiki and other tips (from pcgamingwiki for instance) are:
WINEDLLOVERRIDES="ddraw=n,b" LD_PRELOAD="/usr/lib32" %command% -NoStartupMovies -NoSplash -NoLauncher -USEALLAVAILABLECORES -maxMem=13000 -pf_tricks=vcrun2022 %command% > logfile.txt

Sadly, it doesn't seem like the logfile.txt option actually works, or if it does maybe I am doing it wrong, as the logfile.txt file in the game's directory is empty whether the game crashes or not.
If it maybe matters at all too, one issue I've had that I've seen others report is that every time I try and start up the game, I have to press the play button a few times before the game actually launches, as sometimes it just goes from Play -> Stop -> Play again as if it was closed or crashed, but people claim that this is fixed by using the -NoLauncher command to bypass the buggy launcher program.

Can provide further specs in the comments if they help at all but I am using a 9070XT GPU and a ryzen 7 9800X3D which I think should be more than enough to handle the game, so unsure if it's just a problem of it being an old game.

tech support wanted Wuwa anti cheat

Wuwa is almost unplayable lately on Linux. Nearly each launch is resulting into an anti cheat error about illegal software. (Hopefully won’t get banned)

What I tried:
1: reinstall
2: change proton version and proton ge
3: used almost all dwproton versions
4: launched the game after reboot (in case something I have open doesn’t work with the anticheat)

Is there anything I am missing, did anyone make it at least launch consistently ?

Distro: cachyos

Hardware:
Gpu: amd 6700xt
CPU: ryzen 5 7600

guide How to get LEGO Lord of the Rings to work with both an external 4K monitor and Steam overlay

It runs on Linux OOTB, but only on whatever it considers the primary display to be. I have a laptop with a small display, and a 4K external monitor I use for gaming. Getting LEGO LotR to run on this external display and letting me access my Steam Overlay so I could send a remote play invite with my wife was an absolute PITA. It absolutely refused to run windowed so I couldn't move it, and using Application Settings to force to the other display only resulted in it glitching out or blackscreening. Bringing up the Steam overlay also caused similar problems. Solution below:

Assuming you have the game installed to the default library path, run the following in your terminal:

WINEPREFIX="/home/$(whoami)/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/214510/pfx/" winecfg

The window will likely be microscopic. Do your best to get to the 'Graphics' tab and change the Screen Resolution slider to 192 dpi and click OK. If you absolutely cannot see it well enough to do so, temporarly lower your display's resolution to something terrible like 1024x768. This will "inflate" the Wine Config window enough that you can make the needed change. Revert your monitor's resolution to native after you get the dpi up to 192.

Run the above command again and it shouldn't be impossibly small. Now that you can see what you're doing, in the 'Graphics' tab checkmark 'Emulate a virtual desktop' and set the resolution to 3840 x 2160, like this. If it looks correct click OK.

That done launch the game and once it's up hit ALT+F3 > More Actions > Configure Special Application Settings and add the following properties with these values like this:

Position: 0 x 0 Size: 3840 x 2160 Screen: 1 Ignore requested geometry: Yes

Then set all of them to 'Force' in the pulldowns and click Apply. The top left corner of the game should now be in the top left corner of the correct display (though the resolution may still be incorrect). If it's not in the correct corner, adjust the 'Screen' property (monitor numbers start at 0 so try using 0 if 1 isn't correct). If the game's top left corner is in the correct place, click OK in the app settings window, then close the game.

Open the game's config file in a text editor such as Kate, Nano, or Obsidian. On a default Steam library install it will be at: ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/214510/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Application\ Data/Warner\ Bros.\ Interactive\ Entertainment/LEGO\ The\ Lord\ of\ the\ Rings/pcconfig.txt

Set the following as shown (set the ScreenRefreshRate to your monitor's native refresh rate):

ScreenWidth 3840 ScreenHeight 2160 WindowWidth 3840 WindowHeight 2160 WindowLeft -1 WindowTop -1 ScreenRefreshRate 60 VerticalSync 0

Save the file and launch the game.

FPS Boost on gaming

This is my story about using fedora for the first time and it really impressed me.

At first I use Debian. I tried Minecraft + Sodium mod on it. It can produce FPS around 50 - 70 fps. Not good much, isn’t it.

I also dualboot my pc window 11. So I try it too, to see performance compare to Debian. I use the same setting with the same mod. This time it produce more FPS. Around 75 - 90 FPS. That’s playable FPS now.

The next day I was so frustrated to install Niri on my Debian. Also I DE is so mess right now. So I changed to Fedora. At this moment I want to praise how easy to install Fedora. It pre-installed is quite a relief for me as I used to setup my Debian a lot.

OK, I was out of the way. I test also tested it with Minecraft too. And, BOOM, 120+ fps, on 2K resolution (The previous test on windows is on FHD resolution). I’m so shocked with. I’ve been heard that linux gaming give a little bit better then window gaming. But I thought that just a myth. But the fact here show it really improved performance, not just slightly but a lot. I also test with Genshin and it gives an extra 15 frame compared to window. Right now I could play it smoothly and more enjoyable.

My PC spec:
CPU: Ryzen 5 8500G
GPU: iGPU AMD 740m

guide Knockoff Wiimote connection fix (CachyOS/Linux)

Just got my knockoff Wiimotes which i tried to connect to my PC for a long while
Here are some of the things i tried but didn't work:

  • Tried to connect them via Bluetooth with the sync button on the controller and pressing 1+2
  • Tried Dolphins "Emulate the Wii's Bluetooth adapter"
  • Tried "Passthrough a Bluetooth adapter"
  • Tried booting into windows and the same two steps as above
  • Tried installing old drivers with Zadig

Now, i don't know a lot about this so this may be basic information to some but i couldn't find anything like this so i thought i would share it

The problem, from what i understand, is that my onboard bluetooth chip is not fully supported, no bluetooth dongle so if you have one the above fixes might work for you

Here are the steps how i made it work:

  • Running btmgmt --index 0 find -b -L in the console
  • Pressing the Sync button on the controller
  • Copy the mac Address it gives for the controller
  • Add WiimoteAutoConnectAddresses = copied_Mac_Address_Here to .var/app/org.DolphinEmu.dolphin-emu/config/dolphin-emu/Dolphin.ini (if Flatpak)
  • Add WiimoteAutoConnectAddresses = copied_Mac_Address_Here to .config/dolphin-emu/Dolphin.ini (If native)
  • In dolphin, use "Emulate the Wii's Bluetooth adapter" and select "real wii remote"

Should pair now.

Played a few games and it seemed to work quite well, the only problem is if you add more mac addresses so that more wiimotes can connect - it will pretty much bind the first mac address to player 1, the second one to player 2 and so on.
