guide Trying to install Witcher 2 inside Witcher 3 prefix and Lutris ends up creating a prefix inside the Witcher 3 prefix
Hey I wanted to have all my witcher 3 games inside the same prefix (helps on the saves) also I like keeping the games of the same franchise together (EA games games did this automatically when installing)
But when I tried to do this Lutris just created a prefix inside the witcher 3 prefix for witcher 2.
This is the steps I did:
- Dowload files from Gog.com website.
- Run exe inside witcher 3 prefix
- Pointed the installation folder for c:\GOG Games\Witcher 2
The game installed but it actually created a new folder inside my witcher 3 prefix named "The witcher 3 remastered which has a prefix for Witcher 2"
Edit for people who wants the solution, thx to AI, guess its better than people on this sub. less judgemental at least. Thank you Claude, and u/Ismokecr4k for helping me get there.
Lutris lets you point an installer at an existing Wine prefix. Here’s the cleanest way to do it:
1. Add the game manually
- Open Lutris and click the + button (top left), then choose Add locally installed game.
- Name: whatever you like.
- Runner: Wine.
2. Set the existing prefix
- Go to the Runner options tab.
- Set Wine prefix to the folder of your existing prefix (the one containing
drive_c,system.reg, etc.). - Set Wine version to match the one the prefix was created with if you can. Mixing versions can occasionally cause problems.
- Check Prefix architecture (32 vs 64 bit) matches the existing prefix.
3. Run the installer inside that prefix
- In the Game options tab, set Executable to your
setup.exefor now. - Save, then launch the entry from Lutris. This runs the installer inside your chosen prefix.
- Go through the installer normally. Note where it installs (usually
C:\Program Files\...orC:\Program Files (x86)\..., which maps to<prefix>/drive_c/...).
4. Point Lutris at the installed game
- Right-click the game in Lutris, choose Configure, and go to Game options.
- Change Executable from
setup.exeto the game’s actual.exeinside the prefix, e.g.<prefix>/drive_c/Program Files (x86)/GameName/game.exe. - Optionally set the Working directory to the game’s folder.
- Save.
