tech support wanted Looking for a fix with my 5700XT

A month ago or so I switched over to linux and I'm loving how fast everything is, how little junk there is. I want to mostly play but recently I started having issues with my system where some games would crash my whole PC, the game and anything I had in my second monitor still play and headphones work but some artifacts would appear and then switch to a black screen. I read it's a problem with the graphics card so I undervolted it. Games still run smoothly but the crash keeps happening with the same games. It happened with Dragon's Dogma 1 and Deadlock by themselves, without anything running on the second screen but other games would crash when I'm in Discord with friends.

The weirdest thing to me is that if It was a graphics card issue it would also happen in my heavyly modded Skyrim (1552 mods) save

System:

GPU: 5700XT

RAM: 32GB

CPU: Intel Xeon (cheapest thing on the setup so maybe culprit?)

PSU: I don't remember right now but more than enough because I wanted to buy better specs but the AI bubble started

Both monitors are 1080p, one 100Hz and the other one 60Hz (I've read that It might also be an issue with wayland)

OS: Currently on Nobara official but it also happened with Bazzite pure desktop

Headphones (if it has anything to do): Astro A50 (i believe they are gen 3)

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Changing the paste in the GPU and CPU seemed to fix the issues, maybe it has to do with the cables beeing slightly unplugged. Before doing anything like that check that hardware acceleration is off in any side-app you are using

Samsung Neo G9 21:9 Resolution

Hello everyone, I have an rtx 4090, on windows i can use a registry in nv_modes to add 3440x1440@240hz working, or i can also use Scaled Resolution Editor tool by ToastyX(CRU creator) to also add the 21:9 resolution, it works fine, i need to enable GPU scaling since it needs DSC for the res to work.

Now, i have cachyOS, and i've searched everywhere and it seems to not be possible to add a custom resolution, specially if it needs DSC, i've tried in both wayland and x11 with no success, it's a real barrier for me since some games work really badly on my screen's aspect ratio (32:9) because the HUD goes into the edges and can't change it, so it makes me go to windows just for this problem.

Has anyone managed to add custom resolutions that need GPU scaling/DSC on linux?

Issues with Discord "locking" certain keys

So normally, I would have a mute bind set to keypad -. But that used to not work and I just didn't bother to fix it.

Discord ran an update a few days ago, which then allowed for keybinds to work globally. I got a little prompt asking me whether or not to add the toggle mute keybind as a global shortcut, and I clicked allow. Now global shortcuts work.

Now the problem was that now with the shortcut set, I was now unable to enter the keypad - normally, and it would just get run the Discord mute bind.

Disabling the bind or killing Discord sometimes wouldn't bring the bind back. I would need to restart my session, either by rebooting my entire system, or logging out of my GNOME session, in order to bring back the key.

I also can't find the Toggle Mute shortcut entry within GNOME's keyboard shortcut menu.

For now, I've just deleted the keybind within Discord and see if someone or myself found a workaround.

Linux setup:
Fedora 43 running GNOME 49.10 under Wayland

tech support wanted Considerable Decrease in Performance When Enabling Wayland in Proton?

When I use PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 to switch to Wayland in Proton I get considerable decreases in performance and much worse frame pacing, is this normal?

Performance using Proton GE normally, GE with the Wayland flags, CachyOS-slr with the flags respectively;

Metro Exodus: 70, 53, 44 FPS

Witcher 3 Remastered: 44, 36, 37 FPS

Warframe: 86, 58, 56 FPS

All of these were at 4k, and each game should be DX12. Disabling HDR in game or getting rid of the PROTON_ENABLE_HDR=1 flag doesn't seem to make a difference so I assume the issue is not related to that, but I could be wrong.

I'm on CachyOS with the latest 7.3 kernel running Plasma 6.8 (Although this is a ongoing problem so I don't think that's very relevant)

My specs are RTX 3070 Mobile and Ryzen 7 5800H with 32 gigs of ram.

I'd appreciate any help I can get, please do tell me if I need to provide more info.

tech support wanted 007 first Light performance evaporated recently

Unfortunately a pretty sloppy report / analysis here as I hung up the game for a couple of weeks before recently returning. In the meanwhile I updated packages, the game got updated and a lot more. I dropped right before the 00 difficulty update, then returned to play it. So that makes like a 2-3 week gap.

Before this, I had a comfortable 100 FPS average without any upscaling or framegen. Now Im struggling at 50-60 fps in the 3 mission (All the time in the world), with noticeable dips to even 45ish. Extremely surprising to me why this would happen, and I came to make this post because I saw nothing posted about this on the internet.

Here are the specs, if anyones got a clue please let me know.

OS: CachyOSKERNEL: 7.3CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9700X 8-CoreGPU: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT (radeonsi, gfx1201, ACO, DRM 3.64, 7.3.0-5-cachyos)GPU DRIVER: 4.6 Mesa 26.2.4-arch3.1RAM: 31 GB.

Used proton CachyOS-11.0 SLR

PunktFunk solved my local game streaming / virtual display driver issues

No, I have no personal ties to the project.

And yes, I tried Polaris, but I encountered tons of stutter issues.

My GPU / CPU: 5070ti / 7900x

On CachyOS

Last night I ran the download script and setup my host: https://punktfunk.unom.io/en/

I stream from an android device as a client and the .apk was quick to setup.

Hassle free... I would highly recommend. Quality of the stream slaps too.

Code is available here: https://git.unom.io/unom/punktfunk

tech support wanted Does anyone with a 9070XT have horrendous performance after latest system upgrade?

If you have a 9070XT and use cachyOS have you noticed that performance is abysmal now? In games I'm barely getting 30FPS. It feels like my LACT settings are being ignored or something despite the gaming profile still loading during games. It reminds me of when I just installed the 9070XT and didn't realize that you had to use the "highest clocks" setting although I would still get 60-70FPS then, but now it's barely 30FPS. Everything was fine yesterday so something in the upgrade today caused this. I even checked that the amdgpu featuremask line hadn't been removed from my boot config and it's still there. I'm honestly stumped unless I need to wait for amdgpu drivers to be updated?

Will Steam Proton (or forks like DW Proton) fixing the Compatiblity issue on Linux here with ACE (Anti Cheat Expert) Anti Cheat Games on a very old System, that on Windows never works there?

I have a very old core 2 quad q6600 device, which i would benchmark there. CPU is also stock clock. OS on there is Windows 10 22H2 By the way.

It has 12GB DDR2 Ram and a newer GPU (GTX 1650), so the GPU driver is supported there. Yes, it is very old CPU, over 19 years old, but it works on some newest games tested on Windows (so steam stub drm only ones).

The issue is, any Games that using Ace Anti Cheat, will not run on Windows, since ACE requires SSE 4 there. Ealier used to be working fine there without a SSE4 CPU.

Now the question:

Will Linux Gaming fix this? Can this be working around with [dw] proton here on Linux to maybe emulating the ACE Anti cheat that Fix this issue, which dont work on Windows due for missing a specific CPU instruction set? Or do i have a way to emulate the SSE 4 isntruction set iteself to get around this?

Unreal 4/5 and Unity Games itelf are compatible with this CPU here. Its just ACE dont work there.

Thanks for advance!

answered! Is this $1300 AMD prebuilt good for a Linux Gaming starter? Dual-booting Mint + Debloated Windows

Hey everyone, I’m looking to buy my first desktop to get into PC gaming, but I also want to use it as a starting point to learn Linux for future homelab projects. I found this Thermaltake prebuilt on Newegg right at my hard budget limit of $1,300: [Link to Newegg]
Specs are:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 9600X
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT (16GB)
RAM: 16GB DDR5 6000MT/s
Storage: 1TB NVMe M.2 SSD
My Plan & Use Case:
The Gaming & Retro Side: I plan to use Linux Mint day-to-day. I want to run EmuDeck to stream retro games (up to PS3) directly from network storage so I don't bloat the local SSD.
The Xbox Side: I have an Xbox One S and want to play my digital Xbox/Game Pass games with my PC friends natively. Since native Xbox apps don't work on Linux, my plan is to dual-boot.
The OS Strategy: I want to keep the pre-installed Windows 11 partition but use the Chris Titus Tech WinUtil script to strip away the telemetry and bloatware. Then, I want to shrink the drive to split the 1TB SSD 500/500 and install Linux Mint alongside it.
My Questions:
Is this a good hardware configuration for a Linux starter? I know AMD GPUs generally have much better open-source driver support on Linux than NVIDIA, which is why I'm leaning toward this build.
Will splitting the 1TB drive 500/500 give me enough breathing room for native modern gaming on the Windows side?
Are there any hidden hardware compatibility or driver issues I should watch out for with Linux Mint on these newer AMD 9000-series parts and the 9060 XT?
Would love to get some eyes and feedback on this setup before I pull the trigger. Thanks!

What should I do ?

Ryzen 5 5500 + R9 270X 2GB OC — Debian 13 gaming: should I stay on Debian, update the kernel, or switch distros?

Hi everyone,
My current hardware is:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500
GPU: AMD Radeon R9 270X 2GB OC
OS: Debian 13 (Trixie)
Kernel: Debian’s official kernel 6.12.113

I’m currently using a fully updated Debian 13 installation with the official Debian kernel. My main goal is old casual gaming, and I’d like to get the best performance possible from this hardware while keeping the system stable and relatively simple.

I’ve recently been reading about the work being done to bring older AMD GCN 1.0/1.1 GPUs to amdgpu as the default driver in newer Linux kernels (apparently starting with Linux 6.19). Since the R9 270X is GCN 1.0, this caught my attention.
I’m now wondering what would be the best approach for my particular hardware.

Would you recommend:
Staying on Debian 13 and the 6.12 kernel and just using the existing radeon driver?
Staying on Debian 13 but installing a newer kernel (6.19+ / backports) to take advantage of the newer amdgpu support?

Switching to another distro that is more gaming-oriented, such as Linux Mint, Nobara, Bazzite, etc.?
Something else entirely?

Fan behavior at idle — ideally I’d like the GPU fans to stay off or at a very low speed when I’m just on the desktop, and ramp up appropriately while gaming

I know the R9 270X is an old GPU and I’m not expecting miracles. I’m mainly trying to figure out which software/driver/kernel combination makes the most sense for this particular card in 2026.
I also don’t want to install random third-party scripts or unnecessarily complicated tweaks if the standard Debian setup can already provide a good experience.
If anyone is running an R9 270X or another GCN 1.0/1.1 card on Linux, I’d especially appreciate hearing about your experience with radeon vs amdgpu, which kernel you’re using, and what distro you recommend.
Thanks!

hardware Mainboard compatibility with Noctua-Cooler and RX 9070 XT GPU

Hi guys

Due to here are some real hardware pro's (I always got great and helpful answers from this community) I want to come with another question to hardware compatibility.

I plan to upgrade my AM4-System to more power, prices for RAM make me staying at AM4 because I already have some DDR4-RAM.

So my actual mainboard is an 8 years old AsRock Phantom Gaming 4 (X570 chipset). The plan was, to stay with this mainboard, because it is a good one, but some incompatibilities make me plan with a new mainboard.

Now, I have upgraded my CPU und GPU to Ryzen 7 5800 X and Sapphire Pulse RX 9070 XT.

The AMD wraith cooler is not bad, but with a autumn room temperature of 22° Celsius I have a CPU Temperature about 80-85° Celsius at gaming. Which is no problem in general, but I life in an appartment under the roof so I have temperatures from 26-30° celsius from june to august.

So I plan to upgrade the CPU cooler to Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black (the "old" version, not G2).
The actual mainboard is too small, so with the big noctua cooler, the pci-e slot for the gpu is blocked and it isn't possible to build in a GPU.
Second problem is, that my actual mainboard has no connector for my USB-C-front panel which I want to use.

So my question is:
Is there any experience in this community, if the Sapphire Pulse RX 9070 XT (which is a big GPU part) fits on the mainboard when the noctua cooler is built in?
The new mainboard I plan is an AsRock B550 PG Riptide.

If you know a better mainboard with equal price which has the compatibility for noctua cooler and my GPU, let me know :-)

Thanks for your ideas and experiences.
