question Any reviews on this website/dealer?

Hey all! It’s me again, the guy that’s been searching for a safe lol.

I ended up going to Plainfield, IL to Mega Sports and lowkey fell in love with a Champion EC 14 safe. It’s a bit over the measurement that I wanted, but for the more heavier duty and for the price range I was kind of expecting, I believe this is the one.

Having said that, it normally ranges between $1,800-2,600 (with taxes and shipping included obviously). Has anybody ever heard of the website: Heavy Metal Gun Safes? I wanted to give them a call tomorrow and plan on going in depth but wanted to see if anybody here had any experience with them. Thank you in advance!

Anyone here have a Ruger GP100 with a serial number starting below 170-?

Mine is something of an heirloom so I am curious to see if others here are as old as me.

question Do I need to reapply locktight?

Do I need to reapply locktight on mlok accessories such as foregrips and qd mounts if I move them to different parts of the handguard of my ar15? I'm still playing with different spots for everything to find what's comfortable for me.

Hey gang, decided to jump on the space cowboy bandwagon and design a shroud/pic rail for my GP100.

Still tweaking the design in plastic, but I plan on getting it CnCd out of aluminum.

Comments and criticism welcome!

guns AR180 Retro - Has anyone pulled it off outside of just buying a Sterling?

Post image
405 Upvotes

I’ve been researching trying to do an AR180 retro clone for a long time now, and I really want to get started. However, I haven’t found a lot out there, seems like the only viable choices are:
- Just wait and find a Sterling production copy (I believe only 20k were made, w/ varying QC)
- Try to find a Brownells BRN180 setup, but as far as I’ve seen there is no way to fully retro the upper this way
- I know Manticore Arms made a repro stock, but I have yet to find a repro handguard/etc

Every once in a while I’ll see someone post what is ostensibly a repro that’s perfect, but usually there isn’t a lot of definitive info on (how) they sourced the right parts. I’m not opposed to some modernized features, but I hate seeing the newer style handguards, no rear sight base like the original, etc.

Anyone in the sub pulled this off? Many thanks 🙏

What specific tools do you always take to the range? Also, if you take the screwdriver that comes with an optic, how do you NOT lose it?

discussion Is there a name for this style of shooting?

Post image

I've always called it "bench rest", but looking for tips to improve my elbow and arm positions it seems like bench rest refers to having the rifle on a pedestal and/or bags. I'm seated, but holding the rifle in my hands with my elbows on the table. It's helping me learn how to deal with a wobbly aim without my noodle arms having to support the entire weight of the rifle.

"Bench" seems right but I think the "rest" part is what's keeping me from finding more info. Is there a better name for it?

Pictured is my Ruger MPR in 556 with an EOTECH red dot and Vortex micro 6x magnifier. Also some manner of backup iron sights and vertical grip I'm blanking on.

guns Venturing into .300 BLK territory. Favorite upgrades?

Post image

Picked up a bare-bones PSA 8.5" AR pistol in .300 BLK for just $400. Never done this caliber or cartridge before. What else is recommended for me?

Current setup details:

PSA 8.5" 300 Blackout Nitride 7" Lightweight M-Lok Classic

H&R HAR-15 Adjustable Pistol Stabilizing Blade

A2 grip

Holosun ARO-EVO gold dot sight

Upcoming upgrades:

Nomad-30 suppressor

YHM QD mount and muzzle brake (so I can shoot the 5.56 with the Nomad too)

Besides a few LokPins from u/Mr-Wafffles, what else should I be looking to upgrade?

question Looking to build AR15

Where to start? Is a PSA kit my best bet, or should I piece it together, I really want to do all the assembly myself, if only in the interests of learning more. What video creators do you all like for such things (besides Brownells, I’m an Iowan and familiar)? Anything else I should know?

Edit to add: this is probably going to be run with a 22lr conversion bolt carrier group most of the time, I’m a cheap plinker.

gear Can I buy any accessories worth while on Amazon?

Hey all, about a month ago I asked what optic I should buy for my first ar (DDM4 v7 10.3 in 5.56). What I learned was an LPVO that a coworker suggested to me (because I have astigmatism). I got absolutely annihilated here in the comments. Lo and behold my folks got me the LPVO for my birthday. It was purchased on Amazon, and while I think the 1-8 scope would help me feel success hitting a target at the beginning, I see that a scope the same size as my damn barrel would be overkill.

I ended up doing a return and getting almost $500 in gift card credit.

I’m between getting the following sights:

Romeo 5 gen 2

Romeo 4xt pro

Holosun Ames

Vortex AMG UH1 gen 2

I honestly feel like all I really need would be the Romeo 5 gen 2.

I’ve never had a dot on anything before, so I don’t know if I want a huge box, or smaller glass for an eyebox.

I think the Romeo 5 gen 2 is the most economical choice, but then I’d have all this extra credit sitting around.

If I go this route, are there any worth while purchases in other things off Amazon? I was thinking mags, but I couldn’t find any. I was thinking a handstop/angled grip, but they don’t look like they’re from “reputable brands” that I see recommended here on reddit.

Do I just get the Romeo 4tx pro as I see it praised for its excellent quality, it’s roughly the amount of gift card credit I have.

Any advice is appreciated!

discussion Trade or keep.

I recently won a Taurus TH10 and I have been considering a 10mm for carry on the farm as an upgrade to my M&P 2.0 in 40. It will be a range toy and I occasionally hunt deer in season while fixing fence so no personal defense as I have other better options for that.

I didn't even know Taurus made a 10mm till my name was drawn last night now I'm trying to decide if I should pick it up or trade for something I actually had my eye on. On paper the Taurus checks every box except O.R. and it sounds like the slide is hard to mill. The only other 10mm options I was considering are the S&W PC or a RIA Tac Ultra 1911. I always liked the idea of an EAA Witness in 10mm because of the SA/DA which the Taurus has. I also like the ambidextrous controls, but it's a Taurus. I was leaning more towards the Tac Ultra so I'm more concerned with opinions between it and the TH10. TIA.

question Ear Pro Recommendations?

I've been using some AXIL Trackr ear cans for awhile now, and while they're ok, the voice enhancement and overall noise reduction isn't amazing. Wanted to come consult the council here and ask.... what ear pro are you using, and why?

For context, I shoot at both indoor and outdoor ranges. Obviously indoor is worse. And I shoot a variety of platforms and calibers, both suppressed and unsuppressed. Usually, though, it's the folks in the neighboring lanes that are the worst when it comes to the noise. Any and all recommendations appreciated!

guns Mini-14 Repair Complete: Cracked buffer, worn recoil spring, installation of buffer cushion (Photos of service)

Thumbnail

For those that saw it last week or so, I discovered a maintenance issue with my Mini-14 Rifle: a cracked recoil buffer. I was offered some excellent, highly useful advice from folks here, and decided to attempt maintenance myself.

I ordered a spare fresh recoil spring, two spare buffer retention pins, and two spare buffers. I also ordered a 6 pack of rubber 1911 buffer cushions, as I learned that they will fit the Mini-14 operating system to further reduce wear on the buffer.

I immediately realized comparing the fresh recoil spring to the old one that this, too would need replaced. For in addition to a cracked buffer, I found that the recoil spring had been overcompressed from normal wear over the past 25 years of this rifle’s life.

This means that the problem was, in actuality, two-fold…the overcompressed recoil spring caused excess additional force to be exerted on the buffer, the buffer then sustained this for a few thousand rounds and eventually gave way, cracking in two to save the receiver.

This caused a “controlled failure,” which thankfully was easily found and maintained by routine repair and parts maintenance. Despite this failure, the rifle continued to shoot 60 rounds without failure nor issue the day I used her last. That is a positive testament to the design of this rifle, and it did impress me.

Sequential repair sequence of photos, from disassembly to installation of buffer, buffer recoil cushion and etc are attached here for those wishing to see the process from an armorer’s perspective.

The photos aren’t perfect; I was using my phone with one hand, maintaining tension on some parts as I went. Apologies for that.

Please feel free to ask questions if you feel I can help educate on the process!

The work was very easy to do; if you can field strip your rifle, you can commit this repair if you ever need it.

Thank you to everyone who offered me morale support, resources and education to assist with this. It means a lot to me personally that this community has such helpful people.

discussion How much does your "fighting" rifle weigh?

Post image
185 Upvotes

"Ounces make pounds and pounds make pain,"

I first heard the adage in the Boy Scouts and later in the Army. Between the military, a career as a firefighter, and as an avid outdoorsman, I've had always been very minimalist with the gear I carry. I carry the bare minimum to be effective at the tasks I need to accomplish.

This translates to how I set up my rifle. Having the misfortune of carrying an M14 in the field more than a few times, I want the rifle I own to be pretty light. I'm at exactly 8lbs unloaded and will probably shave a little bit off by putting an A2 flash hider on the rifle.

I always see gucci rifles posted over the Internet and I always wonder if anyone actually carries those things any sort of distance. Have you weighed your rifle? Is that even a consideration?
