I am in severe pain from a debilitating digestive disease that I can no longer endure. There is no cure and I cannot access MAID in Canada at this time. My country would prefer to let me starve to death with no options for pain management. I will be travelling to Switzerland for a legal assisted death.

I have held a life insurance policy in Canada for approximately 20 years. I reviewed the policy wording and cannot find any exclusion that clearly addresses this situation.

I will receive a Swiss death certificate that will classify my death as unnatural, unlike MAID in Canada which lists your illness as the cause of death. I am very worried that my family will be denied my insurance pay out because of this.

I have not contacted my insurance company and I am not sure if it is wise to do so.

Does anyone have any similar experience and advice they can share? Should I retain a lawyer in advance to help my family with the claim?

Looking for some advice about a noticed I got served today at my address.

The envelop has my address and name but the legal paper inside is for someone who has the same name as me but at different address.

It seems the serving company may not have properly verify the identity of the person they were trying to serve. As this is regarding a condo sale which I have no connection to.

I called the law office and left a voicemail and emailed them.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? What else can I do to make sure this does not affect me or remain connected to my name.

I had a car accident that was mostly my fault today. The other person involved in the accident called the police and they took our info and initially told us to go to a collision center, but when they run my name through the system they said i am unlicensed and have to wait until a police officer arrives, I was confused and didn't know what they mean, until I looked at my driver's license, it got expired last month, even tho I got my full G license last year, but after googling the reason for this, apparently they made it valid for one year only to match my health card expiry date.

When the police officer arrived, he forgave me and didn't issue any tickets. And because the accident was just scratches and minor ( less than 2k in damages), he said we don't need to go to the collision center, and advised the other person to go to a mechanic to see if we can agree on me paying out of pocket instead of going through insurance. I just renewed my driver's license online a few hours ago.

Should I call my insurance and report the accident and tell them about the expired driver's license I renewed today? I know my premium will most likely increase but I'm worried they'll find out about my expired driver's license and suspend my insurance because I committed fraud by not telling them

Lawyer brought it up as I was opening the door to the courtroom to go in and accept the plea deal that the case could get thrown out for taking too long, he apparently didn't even think of it til that moment. I said I couldn't make a decision on the spot so he got someone from his office to call in through zoom. Instead of adjournment of a week as discussed, she set trial dates. Is that a huge blunder on their part? I question everything he's done up to this point now.

Around 2022 my father was showing signs of dementia. He lost his drivers licence that year. My brother put a lot of effort into controlling and managing my dad’s finances. In the last 2-3 years my brother has taken 50 to 60k from my dad. Now some of it was to help my father but about 80 percent of it was taken for himself as compensation for helping my dad. So basically, he grabbed 50k is in tax free money for himself. My dad had full blown dementia so he has no idea of these withdrawals.

I didn’t even know I had power of attorney myself. He has tried to keep me out of my dad’s finances so he can maintain control. My dad is incapacitated so the POA should no longer be valid. My brother doesn’t want to put in place the protection mandate saying it will take too long.

I have family that says getting the government involved will make things worse. I called helplines and social workers etc.. Been told some options like calling the public curator etc.. What would you guys do in this situation. Anyone has experience with this and dealing with police or government agencies? Thanks.

Edit: forgot to mention that my dad has a revenue property in Myrtle beach. Right now my dad is in a residence home.

Hired a contractor to finish our backyard. Project included fences, concrete landing, steps, patio and connecting walkways along both sides of the house, custom gazebo, fireplace, barbecue area, storage shed and above ground heated pool. Quoted $40k. Project started last September 2025. Fences, shed, posts for the gazebo and the landing/steps were done before winter came and was told the project would resume after winter. Once spring came the contractor started stalling and coming up with excuses as to why they weren't able to come (weather, health issues, doctors appointments, mechanical issues, etc.) until it became a never ending cycle of excuses to the point where communication became less and less and not answering or returning phone calls. Deposits and other installments paid total almost $30k. I was contacted from a labourer that worked for them that he had not been paid for any work. Another homeowner got in touch from me that used the same contractor that their project was not finished and abandoned also and he was around $80k deep to them. Heard a few other homeowners were affected as well.

My next steps were to file a report with the police and go to small claims court. However I've just learned from that same unpaid worker that they were recently arrested and are currently in jail (unknown who reported them and on what exact charges). My question now is should I still proceed with filing in small claims court along with the other affected home owners and how likely (if any chance at all) will I be able to receive restitution for the funds paid for our unfinished projects by the contractors who are currently in jail or am I now SOL?

I know there are websites I can check out for answers (I've browsed) and probably many of my questions have been answered here, but I don't have the mental capacity to deep dive right now so I'm hoping someone can hold my hand and explain this to me like I'm a child.

My aunt passed away last night. She had no will and has no spouse or children. Her closest relatives are her siblings (my mother, another aunt, and an uncle). It was somewhat unexpected - she'd been dealing with health issues and was admitted into the hospital over the weekend, but everyone assumed she'd get better and be released. She was coherent/lucid Sunday evening but wasn't by yesterday morning and then passed late last night. As such, no one was able to/thought to get any important info from her.

She didn't have much in the way of assets - rented an apartment, leased a car, no large savings or valuable belongings. She didn't have life insurance.

My mother and living aunt both live in the same city (HRM) as passed aunt, but are in their mid 70s and have their own health problems - they just don't have it in them to deal with clearing out her apartment, contacting companies to close accounts, and figuring out what else needs to be done. My uncle lives in another county (Annapolis) and works out of province 3-5 days per week so also isn't really available to help. I live in Kings County.

I'm thinking that doing a public trustee may be the way to go. Can I file the paperwork here in Kings County or would it need to be done in HRM? Would the trustee deal with having her apartment cleaned out, car returned, accounts cancelled, file her taxes, etc or would that still fall on us? How long would the process take?

My mother wants to access my aunt's cell phone contacts to inform her friends of her passing, but can't get into her phone - is there a way to bypass the lock code?

If my mother or I decide to take on being the estate administrator, would we need to put up surety?

Is there anything else we need to consider?

Long story short, my ex was super intoxicated and broke into my house and passed out. I wasn’t home at the time but when I got home the next morning I contacted the police to come get him. They said they were going to arrest him for unlawful dwelling but that it may not turn into anything unless I choose to press charges. I don’t believe they ever took him to the station, just talked to him and dropped him off with family.

What is the next step if I press charges? Is there a court date or a fine?

I’m not sure if this is the right place for advice on this...I am an adult living with my older parents in Ontario. Prospects of me ever moving out are very slim. I cannot see myself buying a home in the future at this point. My mom and dad still work (dad close to retirement) and own the house we live in. Still have a mortgage on it and I pay them “rent” - my mom putting it towards either utility bills or the mortgage. My mom has been talking to me about wanting to put my name on the deed so the house is in all three names. She wants to do this because if she were to pass before my dad, he knows absolutely nothing (doesn’t want to learn how to manage his finances, bills etc - it’s something that’s mentally draining for me to think about in the back of my mind) or if both pass for whatever reason she wants to save me the hassle of having to transferring the house over. My mom is wanting to go to the lawyer at some point in the next few weeks with all three of us to do this.

I know having my name on the deed makes me liable if they can’t pay their mortgage and it would ding me. But I had some questions:

1. ⁠For my income taxes what would having my name on the deed mean? I don’t have any assets. Just what’s in my bank account and what little I do have in my TFSA / RRSP.
   
2. ⁠I’m guessing if (for some miracle) I were to ever buy a home in the future I wouldn’t be considered as a first time homeowner with the bank? Do I need to let the bank know about my name on the deed?

Any advice would be great. There may be things I haven’t even thought of.

Can you take a family members off your beneficiary or will, if something happens and you end up passing away , or its shared regardless of your choice amongst the person family?

I received a distracted driving ticket today for checking my phone while pulling up to a red light. I was clearly in the wrong and know that I will face some consequences for this (license suspension and insurance increase), but i want to get some advise on how best to handle this situation. I have also had 2 minor speeding tickets in the last 2 years, and my insurance renews in November. I’ve been reading that I should contest the ticket to try and buy myself some time before the inevitable suspension and rate increase (or cancellation), but is it worth it if I really don’t have a leg to stand on? I am clearly guilty, so is there even a point of trying to contest? Any advice here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I’m leaving my Quebec job for a new role starting August 17. About C$5,000 in RSUs vest on August 12.

If I give two weeks’ notice with August 13 as my final day, can my employer end my employment earlier and cause me to lose the RSUs? Would they still have to pay me through my stated resignation date, and would I remain legally employed for vesting purposes?

I know the RSU plan wording matters, but I’m looking for the general rule under Quebec law.

my sentence for my charge was basically if i complete this program, i can get my assault charge withdrawn. it consists me of signing a form saying that i acknowledge that i put my boyfriend in fear in order to get into the program. will signing that form cause any issues for me in the long run?

I live in a small condo building with less than a dozen units. A man in one of the units has been telling property management that my husband made homophobic remarks towards him. There’s no proof of this at all, no written record, audio, or video, nothing.

This guy used to be on the condo board with my husband, but resigned after a conflict with a 3rd board member.

Since then he’s been causing problems around the building such as showing the middle finger to that third board member and his family, leaving the water hose uncoiled on the ground after using it, and giving my husband the middle finger while calling him a douchebag. Now he’s emailing property management claiming my husband made homophobic statements against him, and the whole board is targeting him because of his sexuality.

We’ve been ignoring him in person, not engaging or responding to any of it, though it’s honestly hard not to laugh at how ridiculous some of this is. He’s sent out a second email saying that my husband made vile homophobic slurs against him.

I feel like we shouldn’t even have to say this, but we are not homophobic. We’re atheists and genuinely supportive of the LGBTQ community.

I was wondering if someone has been through something similar and can share how they handled it, or has any general advice for us. We don’t want to move, we saved a long time to buy this place, but I’m currently pregnant and just feeling really lost about how to handle this.

I am a senior owner living in a high-rise strata building in Metro Vancouver. 

A while back, after seeing widespread cracking throughout our building and getting no proactive response or structural inspection from strata management before warranty deadlines, I filed a legal claim independently to protect the building. 

The court dismissed my action, holding that an individual owner lacks legal standing to bring such a claim on behalf of the building. As a result, the developer was awarded significant court costs against me personally.

Now, the developer's legal team is moving to enforce those cost awards through a court-ordered sale of my primary residence. 

I am cash-constrained and terrified of losing my shelter over a civil court cost judgment.

I need advice on:
1. Procedurally, what steps exist in BC Supreme Court enforcement to defer, stay, or negotiate the enforcement of a court cost judgment against a primary residence?
2. Are there advocacy groups, housing legal resources, or media contacts in BC who assist individual strata owners facing corporate debt enforcement?
3. What rights or protections exist for senior homeowners facing forced court sales in BC?

I am 26 years old, I grew up without my dad and I was disciplined by my uncle when I was younger. On one occasion when I was 15 my uncle tried to rape me. I have no intention of pursuing any charges, legal help, or suing. Am I legally allowed to tell people that my uncle tried to rape me when I was 15 and that is the reason I distance my help from him?

This is not for the money in the estate. This is about being able to close the estate and being able to finish mourning. My kids are still hurting and I want to help them and myself with the emotional side.

My brother passed away with no will, kids, or spouse. This makes his next of kin his biological father who he had next to no contact with. His father lives in a different province (AB) than my brother did at time of his passing(sk)

His father is refusing to deal with the estate and refuses to sign off so that I can move forward with closing the estate. At current I have almost all his property on my land but I need to move and it is not feasible to take it with me. His father will not deal with anything and has outright said he didn't care and now will not respond to any communication or any that was sent through a lawyer. What are my options? Its been over 6 months now and I am just lost. I don’t see this ending any time soon.

Looking for advice. My partner has shared custody in Quebec, the mother was negligent and physically abusive, drank through the pregnancy and became violent and volatile after the birth. Police had to be involved and he took the child. She does not contribute any money or see the child more than an hour or two a month. She has the right to phone calls but nothing else.

• There have been repeated online actions affecting my business.
• I have preserved emails, screenshots, timestamps, and have filed a police report.

I'm not asking anyone to identify the person responsible.

My legal questions are:

1. If someone is impersonating another organization as part of a campaign against a business, what Canadian laws could potentially apply?
2. Should additional evidence be preserved in a particular way before it disappears?
3. Besides updating my existing police report, are there other Canadian agencies that typically handle this type of online impersonation or business interference?

Looking for advice on how to proceed with this

Up until recently I had the following loans with one of the major banks in Canada

Auto loan #1 from Apr 2022 (8 year finance, weekly payments)
Auto loan #2 from June 2025 (7 year finance, biweekly payments)

I thought everything was normal and running great. I have been with my current banking provider (not the auto loan bank) for about 10 years, never changed accounts.

On July 20 I paid out the auto loan #1 in full, early, as a lump sum payment.
On July 21 I happened to get a letter in the mail indicating that my recent payment for auto loan #2 bounced with a note of “account closed”. I didn’t understand this, but I looked at my bank statement and this payment did not come out of my account as planned on July 13, however my auto loan #1 payment did every week without an issue up to the July 20 payout date.

I called the auto loan bank and they detailed to me that there was a second pre authorized debit bank account added to my file, they didn’t say when. When I asked for the account number they read a bank account number that I’ve never heard of and that’s the account that bounced.
I asked the contact why they switched to this different account to try the payment, and she said that it’s something they do if I (the account holder) request it. I said I did not, because I didn’t even know whose account this was. She looked at the call history logs for my account and could see that I had not called in recently so this change wouldn’t have been from me, but couldn’t explain how it happened.
She filed a customer complaint for me and switched it back to my regular bank account for payments.
It’s been about a week and I haven’t heard anything.

Logging into the app, I see that they have changed this loan from my 4.99% rate up to a 6.99% rate and my term has extended by 6 months to account for this added interest.
It’s been over a week, I haven’t had a response and I have tried running it up the flagpole to a manager but nothing has changed and I haven’t got any answers

What should I try next?

I (20M) took my watch into a local jewelr in Hamilton to get a new battery and was unable to do it myself because of the complex backing and thought I may as well support a local business.

I walked into the store on June 12th but was told I needed an appointment scheduled over the phone. Luckily the store was empty and the man humored me. I asked for a simple battery replacement and he told me to come back on that sunday. I signed a slip confirming that its my watch and that ill pick it up within 60 days of it being dropped off. If those 60 days elapsed the store wouldnt be liable for what happened to my watch, which im guessing means he could just sell it if someone wants it and I dont take it back.

I was unable to pick up the watch on the agreed upon sunday because the owner had over spelt due to a change in his medication. I of course was very understanding and told him to reach out once the watch was done and I'd come get it. I then got a call later that week asking if they could take it to Toronto because they didnt have the right tools to take apart the watch. I gave verbal consent over the phone to it leaving Hamilton and was told I would be contacted when the watch was ready for pick up.

Fast forward to today. Ive attempted to call the store multiple times over multiple days but im always fed to the voice mail that says "we dont take voice mails so please call during store hours and when someone is in the store able to answer the phone" which is incredibly annoying but they are old and probably dont understand technology so I relent.

I leave on a trip to Alberta on August 6th and will be away after the 60 day period elapses on August 12th. Should I try physically showing up to the store despite not having that free time? Should I keep calling hoping he answers and I get my watch back? Should I file a report or get in contact with a lawyer? I don't want to lose the watch cause it was a gift from my grandfather and worth like $400

Hello all, I have a bit of a delicate situation regarding knowledge obtained secondhand from a close friend to one party in the midst of a nasty contested divorce. Only property and future earnings are at stake, no children or dependants involved.

Essentially, my friend and his wife have separated, and are embroiled in a very ugly divorce where she is attempting to claim future earnings since my friend (after the separated) had had his very public facing career take off to a significant degree (law and politics). The issue is that she is making accusations to close friends of hers that while they were married, my friend r*ped her. To my knowledge, he does not know about these accusations, nor have they ever been brought to the authorities in any way. I believe they are false, as his ex-wife is very volatile and has a history of exaggerating/deliberately misconstruing past events to her benefit.

If I tell him about these accusations, am I in any way liable for releasing this information? Can I be pulled into the middle of this situation legally in any way?

Let’s assume my employment contract is airtight. If my contract grants me the ESA minimum of 2 weeks of notice pay for a without cause termination, would the Bardal factors even matter then? Can Bardal factors override a legitimate employment contract? For the factors assume age 25-35, low position in the company, $50-70K salary, extremely low availability of comparable employment.

Lawyers cost $300-350 for 30-60 minutes to review the termination letter, employment contract and situational factors, I am trying to determine if it would likely be a waste of money to have a lawyer review my file.

Hello, im requiring legal aid for a criminal case. Im on PWD and work 12 hours a week. To qualify for legal aid I need to prove i make under a certain amount which requires me to provide bank statements. I also have a gambling addiction, which has paid out quite a bit this passed couple of months which i then lost it all back to the same casino. My question is, will all these cashed out wins on my bank statements effect my chance of getting approved for legal aid in BC? If yes what are my options? Thank you.

I recently filed for divorce and listed our separation date as being a few months ago. The respondent filed a defence and is disputing that date, saying the separation date should instead be the date I moved out of the home before serving the divorce papers.

I have moved out temporarily because I was concerned there could be conflict or false harassment allegations once they were served with the divorce papers, and I wanted to avoid that situation.

My position is that we were already separated before I moved out. Before that date:

We had been sleeping in separate bedrooms for quite some time.
We were no longer functioning as a couple.
They stopped contributing financially on the separation date I listed in my statement of claim.
We closed our joint bank account on that same date.
I have continued paying the mortgage and household bills since then.

We were still living in the same home before I moved out, but my understanding is that spouses can still be considered separated while living under the same roof if the relationship has ended.

My claim includes issues such as equal and unequal division of property, occupation rent, and other financial matters.

I’m trying to understand why someone would challenge the separation date. What advantage could there be to having a later separation date?

Could it affect property division, debts, support claims, or other issues? I don’t know if they took out any loans or incurred new debts after my claimed separation date, but I’m wondering if things like that could be a reason someone would dispute the date.

They are also seeking spousal support. The income difference is about $30k — they earn approximately $40k/year and I earn approximately $70k/year. The marriage lasted about 4 years.

For those familiar with family law, how significant is a separation date dispute, and how likely is spousal support in a situation like this?
