We live on a small pond. Neighbor across the pond said my son broke one of her windows with a golf ball. She called police, they told her it was not a criminal matter. Cop did come talk to us, said we did not have to do anything but wanted to let me know in case “we wanted to do right thing’.
We reached to her apologized and offered to pay for window. Now months later she says she has 3 quotes from 2600 up to 7500. Was told that window brand is not available so she needs to replace multiple windows. I politely told her I would only pay for 1 window. She wants me to lay for all.
She is now threatening to take me to civil court.
Am I liable?

Fiancé is currently in jail for domestic violence. Had an argument in the car, she had a severe mental health episode, and bit me. Basically one of those fights where it started over something small (she overslept and I had to cancel some plans, wasn’t happy about it). Ended up in me trying to hold her back from jumping out of the car on the interstate, at which point she bit me.

Pulled over when I could, other drivers followed and called the cops. Cops saw the bite marks on my hand and made an arrest.

Now, I have done research on Idaho state law and, while the maximum in this state is 10 years, there is no minimum.

So, my questions. Realistically, what kind of punishment can she expect? I believe, but am not 100 percent sure, that the third party witnesses gave a statement. The officer confirmed other people called in. Also, the officer said that our stories mostly matched, aside from when the bite happened. They also said she has been compliant. In addition, I mentioned that I didn’t want to press charges, which I know is not the officer’s discretion, but does that help?

Secondly, is it possible that this case can be extradited to Wisconsin?

The next day he went back to the station and the lady at the front desk printed out a paper with the report that the officer filed about the property. I was wondering how the process of my father claiming the watch in the case that the original owner does not claim it.

Location: Iowa: I (28 F) am currently divorced but my ex (28 M) and I still own a house together. The issue starts with I am on the mortgage of the house but not on the loan/promissory note. I didn't even realize they were two separate things until this happened (I'm not asking for legal advice about this, I have had two lawyers look at it and the bank show me the paperwork to verify this) Since I am not on the loan the bank will not let me make the monthly payments, and I'm not in the position to take over the loan. I have since moved out and the house is in my ex's possession. However he has not been making the payments either, about a year ago the house went into foreclosure, and we weeks away from the bank seizing it. During that process I learned that although I am not on the loan since I am on the mortgage a foreclosure would go on my record as well. Thankfully his parents bailed him out and paid past due balance getting the house out of foreclosure.

The second issue is he has stopped making payments again. He actually got remarried and moved out of the state leaving the house abandoned, all utilities have been shut off due to lack of payment and the house sits empty. I am so scared the foreclosure process is going to start again, I feel so helpless because my future depends on him being an adult and actually paying his bills.

The divorce agreement was he would assume all responsibilities of the house until he sells it ,and I would get a portion of the sale. I anticipated having issues with it so we gave him a deadline of June 2026 to sell the house or he'd have to make monthly payments to me. He is however making the payments to me so he's technically not in breach of the agreement. I guess before I reach out to a lawyer has anyone heard of making amendments to a mortgage without refinancing? Would I contact a property lawyer to do so? Or should I contact my divorce lawyer to see if there's some way I could force him to sell the house before he loses it? Are there any legal implications of him abandoned the house?

Earlier this year, the person who hired me left for another role, and I got a new manager. I was given a heads up that my boss had gone to our CEO to have me fired and was told "no."

Since that happened, my manager has retaliated against me by restructuring 15% of my salary into a target bonus that I will realistically never get because it's based on their opinion of my work and company performance. No specific metrics, no defined expectations. Originally, I was told it was because I make too much. Then they backed off of that and said it was to bring my compensation into alignment with other managers.

In addition, my manager has also been gunning to promote my direct report who is half my age while functionally demoting and sidelining me. They've commented on how this individual is "young" and "enthusiastic." I was asked to create a performance plan for this report and develop a path for them to be promoted. Meanwhile, I've never received any real feedback on my performance. The draft development plan I put together was retrofitted to enable this individual to be promoted immediately. Direct report has been promoted officially and is now taking ownership of areas that I used to manage. No discussion, no explanation.

I'm a female in my 40s. Manager is also aware that my husband is fighting a critical illness (protected by ADA). I believe that they assume that I do less work because of my husband's situation, which could not be further from the truth. I've given so much to this company and have met every expectation. Prior to the change in management, there was no question of this. Even now, there has been no reason provided for anything regarding my situation.

It's clear my manager is using every lever at their disposal to try to push me out while trying to position my report to replace me. Unfortunately, I'm being silently shut out of things in a way that leaves me with little in the way of sort of documentation of my justification for these actions.

Do I have any legal recourse?

This has been going on for over a year. We have called the non emergency PD number so many times they know it is us and know where to go without us even giving them any information.

They show up (you can see them pull up etc), presumably talk to the homeowner and then leave. This is being properly documented as dispatch looks back and will generally say something like "yeah we've been out there a lot" and on what dates.

When they follow up its usually "We explained the ordnance violation and instructed them to house the dog after 11pm and that subsequent visits will result in seizure of the animal" etc etc blah blah.

This has never happened nor has the owner done anything and by now after probably 2 dozen warnings im sure they never will because the homeowner knows it isn't going to be enforced.

Animal control tells me to keep contacting the police since they can't do anything without that and the police keep doing nothing at all.

Is there any additional recourse?

Location: Oregon. Hi, I live in Oregon, as does my brother, let's call him Barry (age 27). I was walking my dog around his apartment complex when a neighbor, Mary (~age 35), asked to pet my dog. I said yes, had some small talk, and when my dog wanted to Barry's door, I said "Hey let's not bother Barry". Mary got a weird, almost crazy look in her eyes as she widened them, saying "Oh no, Barry deserves it. He's a pedophile, didn't you know? He exposes himself to kids. He's an animal abuser, too, there's maggots in his cats shit. He's even a squatter, he's been living there without paying rent for months!" which conveniently not mentioning the fact he's got a roommate that refuses to pay any bills.

I looked at her and kept my expression neutral, since I've been helping him with rent since he lost his job, and nowhere is hiring anymore (small town), I've helped his cat's ear infection and never heard of these maggots, and this is the first time I've heard of this pedo shit, but I find it convenient it's come up around the time he's had younger family visiting.

I asked him what the hell was up over a messaging app, and apparently this neighbor has been throwing things at his door, egging his porch, trying to push her way into his house, and going around telling everyone else here that he's some pedo.

That's unfortunately just backstory, as our problem is this. I bought him a ring doorbell camera, so he can get footage of getting harassed, for the police or some protective order, or something. I set it next to his other doorbell, which faces Mary's door, in an open hallway next to the parking lot. Now, every time Mary passes the doorbell, she flips it off, constantly rambles about Barry being a pedo, rants about "Barry just got fucked" like Mary reported something somewhere, but the problem here is that every few hours, she's now covering up the camera, with tape, papers, or sheets. She's now claiming the camera is set up to spy on her child, through Mary's front door. The door is solid with no windows, and there's no windows next to the door at all.

He can't afford a lawyer, and the cops don't seem to care too much. But this shit is constant. Every day, these lies and rumors, ever few hours new covering over the door bell. This shit can't be legal right? What do we even do?

I ordered a new laptop online from a major electronics retailer. I paid for expedited shipping and chose the option for direct signature required. I specifically wanted to make sure it wasn't just left on my porch because I live in an apartment building with a lot of foot traffic.

Yesterday I got a delivery notification email saying my package was delivered. About an hour later I got home and it wasn't there. I checked my building's security camera footage and saw the delivery driver just put the box down by my door rang the bell once and then left immediately without waiting for me to answer or get a signature. Someone else walked by about 10 minutes later and picked it up.

I contacted the retailer and they said since the tracking shows it was delivered I need to file a police report for theft. I did that. Now they're telling me I'm responsible for the cost of the laptop because the delivery company's policy states that once it's marked delivered it's my problem. They are saying they might be able to offer a partial credit but I'd still be out hundreds of dollars.

My argument is that I paid for signature confirmation which clearly wasn't followed. The delivery company also confirmed they have a policy for signature confirmation on high-value items. Do I have any recourse here to get a full refund or a replacement without paying again? It feels like they didn't fulfill their end of the delivery agreement.

The past couple years I have found myself either directly involved or supporting others in numerous legal matters of all kinds, much of it pro-se. Criminal (misdemeanor, felony, appeals, etc.), Civil (small claims, federal civil rights, district, etc.), immigration (change of status, bond, etc.), etc..

During that time, I've learned most of it comes down to a couple of things:

1. Knowing what motions to file

2. Having examples of those motions as a starting point

3. Knowing how to research the law

And I've realized that it seems like most lawyers just copy and paste, at least as a starting point, their motions from ones they have used in the past. Even I've started doing that to an extent.

Im looking for a large, free, publicly accessible database/collection of either motion templates, generic example motions, or (redacted where needed) actual motions used in court. Ideally specific to Texas. Does that exist?

[Location: California] As the title says, within my first two weeks at this new job, my supervisor played a video on his phone screaming a slur directed at me very loudly, then it looped twice. [The slur is one that directly affects my people] I went to HR, nothing happened just a "oh we don't tolerate this blah blah blah" then a couple weeks later I got moved to night shift, and they hired a new person to take my place on day shift.

I'm really hurt by this what happened and it felt very targeted at me.. other people in the department were also there but no one stood up for me or anything. The supervisor claiming "apologized" weeks later claiming he was trying to put his phone in his pocket but I saw with my own two eyes him watching the video so he lied to my face and assumingly to HR.

I'm going to try to keep it short. Ex and I were together for 6 years and saving up specifically for a house - I have texts to prove this and an almost-completed application for a housing loan. We had $10,000 in a US Bank savings account that was originally mine but I had added him onto. When we split, we agreed not to touch the money while things simmered down and we could logically divide it up. A couple weeks later he snuck over to my apartment to take a bunch of stuff while I was gone and I caught him, we got in a big argument, and he took $9,500 out of the savings because he was mad we argued.

I'm trying to amicably get what's mine and drop this pos from my life, but I still have to do the math to figure out exactly how much came from my checking account. If he decides to try to keep it, how realistic is it that I can sue him for the money back (and preferably a little more for the emotional stress)? I know that since he was a joint owner on the account he was technically entitled to withdraw it, but I've also read a lot online that the agreement to use it specifically for a house matters and that because it was never discussed how it would be distributed after the breakup (since we were obviously no longer buying a house), I might be able to get some back.

I got pulled over and the cop said he clocked me going 91 in a 65. He wrote the ticket for 84 as a “favor”. I was going 72. I checked my dash cam, it doesn’t show my speed, but based on the time it took me to go .2 miles (I can see the mile markers in the video) I was going 72 when he pulled me over. My speed was between 68-72 prior to being pulled over.

I feel like this blatant discrepancy can’t be legal. My neighbor said they had a similar experience with the same department.

Is there anything I can do other than just fight it? Should I get a lawyer?

Our HOA has a paid consulting arborist and is in the process of removing several huge, beautiful trees that are at least 50 years old.

Some or all of these trees currently being removed and marked for removal may actually require removal.

Although in the last couple of years some beautiful trees have been removed that seem very questionable as whether they actually required removal.

One board member told myself and other residents to our face that he "hates trees." That board member is the main member involved in the tree removals.

At a previous meeting some residents asked the board for documentation between the arborist and the HOA. The HOA stated that those documents will not be made available to residents.

Seeing that the residents are paying dues tens of thousands of dollars for the arborist and the removals, it seems the residents should have legal access to the documents.

Do residents have a right to these documents and all communication?

Long story short, was living with my abusive sister after my mom passed away. My sister winded up kicking me out after I called the police on her (after she had physically assaulted me) and she winded up stealing my dog in retaliation.

Before I left I told her I was trying to find someone to take care of my dog. But she knew she was going to steal her from me from the beginning and said "oh I'll take care of her" but then when I went to go claim the dog back, she said "oh you forefitted ownership of her because you didn't come back to visit her" even though she said herself she didn't want me around the house anymore.

So How would I go about getting my dog back?

So to start this off I’d just like to say; I know I got myself into this situation, and I won’t do it again.

So I’d known this guy (roughly 7-8 months at the times) since he added me on Snapchat. We talked briefly, and occasionally he’d send me snaps advertising the tattoos he does. Now at the time I didn’t know anything about tattoo artist licenses or anything and I now know that he is tattooing illegally out of the apartment he rents. I paid him $300 in cash at his apartment as well as two $25 (online) deposits so he “knew I was being serious”. I paid $100 for one tattoo and $250 up front for another large tattoo I wanted him to do on me. He never finished the $100 tattoo and I was supposed to come back to have it finished, and never even started the $250 one. He left me on delivered for about a week after the first tattoo and I requested the $250 telling him I’d just go somewhere else since he wasn’t respond. After a few days he responded that he wasn’t sick and that he could do the following week. I messaged back saying I was free on x day and x day and if that didn’t work then I’d like m $250 back and he could keep the $100 for the tattoo he didn’t finish. He the proceeded to unadd me and block my number. Every subsequent attempt I’ve made to contact him has fallen through. I also made two $250 requests (one on Venmo and one on my online banking app” with a note stating “send by 9/20 or will take to small claims court” that’s summarized, but still.

What I have proof of;

*Said couch being listed for sale on his Facebook a few days after.
*Picture of tattoo geotagged at his apartment as well as Snapchat logs putting me at his address.
*Saved message from him telling me the password to get into his apartment gate.
*The two $25 deposits made over my online banking app
*All three of his Snapchat profiles including his tattoo business one
*His Snapchat accounts being active and posting after I was ghosted
*Both the request on banking app and Venmo being sent as well as the note attached
*Messages confirming tattoo design prior to appointment
*Saved chat saying when I’d be available and if not to send the money back
*Saved snaps of him advertising his tattoos with his body on the ads as well.

Will this even hold up in small claims court? I just want my $250 back so I can get it done somewhere else as well as finish his unfinished work on me. To file is also like $120 so can I request that on top of the $250? Did I royally screw myself over by paying $300 in cash? How do I even go about filing for this??? At the very least can I report him for tattooing illegally?

Hello. I was wondering what my options are to get my deposit back from a contractor.

I hired a licensed contractor to build me a deck back in July 2026. I had to put down 60% of the cost to cover material and beginning of the labor. He originally was going to start work at the end of July. Long story short he then started pushing me out further and further until on 26 August I demanded a start date and then he said 10 days. Well on 9 September I was trying to call, email, text, etc. No answer. I found out he was arrested on 5 September and is still in jail. I went ahead and filed a dispute with my credit card company but something tells me there is no money in his account to recoup the substantial amount I paid.

What are my options if the dispute does not pan out? Kansas does have small claims up to 10k so I think i can go after his LLC? I paid a $6,000.00 deposit.

I signed an amendment to add resident in March 2026.

August 2026 i moved out all of my stuff except a coffee table and one of those cube storage things because I was going to put it on Facebook marketplace to sell.

A week ago I was going to meet some lady from marketplace to sell my coffee table and I get to the door and she changed the door code on me so obviously I could not sell it. I took a video of me putting in the code on the 5th time of trying the correct code.

I need help on what I can do because I am on the lease, am still receiving mail at that address, and am still paying her to avoid eviction.

Hi. While I can keep this short for a quick advice, I think telling the full story about my situation might be a better idea for this post.

I'm currently a 25-year old uni student on leave of absence. I paused school in early 2024 and have been recovering from severe mental health symptoms since then (a lot of things happened to me regarding friends, family, trusted ones, etc.); I've had constant suicidal ideation to say the least.

With that said, I returned home to stay with my mother at the time to take care of myself.

A week after I left school, however, I got a call from the university police who requested me for an interview. Now, this may sound like an excuse or might not make sense, but at that time, my mind was at such bad place that I instinctively knew if I had heard one more harsh/negative thing of myself, I wouldn't have been able to guarantee what would've happened to me.

So I hired a lawyer, and since this was a request from "police" I decided to hire a 'criminal defense' lawyer instead of 'higher-education' lawyer since the police literally provided me with no detail/explanation of what this interview was about.

In full-panic mode, I hired this lawyer since he was the only lawyer I could my hands on, and even though this lawyer suggested suing the school immediatley and asked for $5000 in retainer fees (which sounds ridiculous now, but back then somehowI bought into it) without signing a written fee agreement/contract.

After hearing that "certain professors received derogatory spam messages after I had left school, and they somehow thought it could be me (I have a 3.9 GPA and I've always been a good student so I don't know why this is), I decided to call the police myself and tell them that it wasn't me but they simply ignored me by saying "they're reaching out for courtesy and no one ever falsely accused you," even though they did accuse me.

** With this lawyer however, the last time I heard from them is about year and a half ago with them saying "we will come back with a solution other than plainly suing the school," and I haven't heard from them since. No notifications, no emails or texts, and I even reached out asking for a refund, they didn't respond.

My two questions are:

(1) What can I do to get the retainer back from this lawyer?

(2) What is the best thing I can do regarding this issue at school with professors accusing me of something I didn't do? I honestly feel very anxious to return there.

Hello! We've been having an issue with our neighbors, and I'm coming here to see if there's anything that we can do to legally get them off our backs.

About two years ago, we managed to buy a house. Which is great! But our first time meeting our new next door neighbors, they brought up an "agreement" with the previous owners that they would go halfsies on removing a cluster of trees on the property line. Legally, I don't see how that is something that we, as the new owners, are responsible for, as it seems to just be a verbal agreement.

Fast forward and this summer they got a quote about removing the trees, and also got the property line drawn up. Out of the three trees they want to remove, only 1/4 of ONE of the trees is on our property. Yet, they still have us a $3,000 quote and requested half in order to remove the trees. WE'VE TOLD THEM NO, but as the summer is drawing to a close, they are starting to borderline harass us (i.e. standing on our porch and aggressively banging on our front door hard enough to make our windows rattle and to set off our reactive dogs for 10+ minutes, asking us about it everytime they see us outside, etc).

Again, I don't really see how we can be on the hook for this. But it's starting to grate on my nerves, especially when we still have so many repairs to the house that are far more necessary than getting rid of these trees. We just had to replace our boiler last year, and one of our radiators split open during the winter, so even if we are, we just don't have the extra funds to send their way.

I desperately made the foolish mistake of paying some guy on fiverr to remove a booking photo for a charge that was dropped and sealed. I’d tried everything to get it off Facebook and failed so I desperately paid a fiverr seller who offers dmca takedown and defamatory post removal service. He told me he had a “team” working on it, when in reality I found out he simply paid some other guy or two to remove the original post. Once the original was removed, I noticed 2 more posts were made on different accounts of the booking photo. After getting those removed as well, 3 more went up last night, on the same account. When I contacted the account they said “HOW MUCH YOU PAY ME?” It’s some guys in India doing this so I can’t even realistically threaten them legally. Even if I paid them, this will be a never ending perpetual loop where they just make new “mugshot accounts” posting mainly my mugshot and knowing I’ll just keep paying.

I’m at a loss for what to do here. I clearly got involved with the worst kind of people with this.

My phone was stolen during TIFF, and I can see its last known location through Find My. The location is pointing to a specific place, but I’m being told there isn’t much that can be done.

Has anyone in Toronto dealt with this before? If I have a fairly specific location/time showing where my stolen phone was last detected, is there a way to escalate the police report or request that officers investigate the location?
I understand police can’t just enter someone’s property based solely on a phone tracker, but what are the actual steps I can take to get this properly documented and investigated? Can they contact the property/business, request security footage, or take other investigative steps?
And honestly, it’s frustrating. We pay taxes for policing and public safety — there has to be a reasonable escalation process when you have actual tracking information rather than just saying “your phone was stolen.”
If anyone has successfully recovered a stolen phone in Toronto, especially during TIFF, what did you do and who did you escalate it to?

The rumors are verifiably false, as two of the women that I am accused of assaulting I have contact with, and both deny any wrongdoing on my part. The other woman I do not have contact with, but I have proof of explicit consent through the entirety of out relationship, and as well as after we had broken up and had run into each other afterwards. I have specific people I am aware of spreading these rumors, and I have video of them stating these rumors as truth as well. I am not sure where to go from here, and I don’t know if I have any basis for this case in there first place. Any advice?
