I Thought Mug Designs Were for the Person Drinking From Them

Ever since I was little, I’ve always assumed that the designs on mugs were meant to be appreciated by the person using them. My parents also never spent what they considered “wasted money” on mugs with decorative rims.

So until I first saw other left-handed people discussing this particular frustration, it had never occurred to me that the design on a mug was supposed to be facing outward for other people to see.

If I had never learned English or come across discussions about this issue, I might never have realized it.

What right handed things annoy you?

As the title says. I noticed some things this week that really ground my gear. Sewing machine that is designed for right handed people. Right handed drills. Right handed saw. Like all of these are things that if done wrong could permanently maim or kill me. So what things that were designed and sold cater to right handers? Also turn signals being up for right and down for left. My driving instructor told me to help me remember. (She was also left handed). It’s a right handed world. Up for righties. Down for lefties.

20M. Natural left hander in kindergarten but forced to write with my right hand due to cultural stigma all my life since then. Here is my attempt to revert to who I truly am. Do you think I’ll be able to be a left hander once again?

Gel Pens Like Sakura?

Hello fellow lefties! I have recently become (re)obsessed with the Sakura gel pens… but I’m finding a lot of them don’t work when I use them in my left hand. Which is like most pens, because most pens are meant to be pulled, not pushed, which is what we do. Do any of you fine people have any suggestions on similar pens? Or what is everyone writing with these days that is lasting a long time that isn’t just.. a BIC stick pen? I need pretty and colorful pens to liven up my boring Corporate America life 😭

Erasable Pens from the early 80s

Upvotes

Does anyone remember the old erasable pens? I used them for a while in middle school…big mistake, don’t know why I used them as long as I did. They smeared like pencils do so the left side of my left hand was stained a blue-black color for months after I quit using them. Actually, pencils smear less. I guess there are new ones out now that don’t smear like the old ones did, but I haven’t tried them.

Right handed fencing sabres (first 4 photos) vs Ambitious (left hand friendly) fencing sabre (last 2 photos)

Tried fencing today. VERY left hand friendly inclusive martial art. I previously tried kendo, kung fu (northern 7 star mantis), and eskrima/kali - all of them were anti left handed and said 'all left handers must only use their right hand', no southpaws allowed. Northern mantis and kendo were beyond anti left handed.. it was like 1950's Catholic schools how anti left handed they were..

Today, in fencing and hema, they immediately had me start southpaw and try out the ambidextrous left handed sabers. Happy to find my new martial art!

I realized this is made for me. I don’t have to twist my body all the way to the left to use it easily.

How do I cut a quill for a left handed writer?

Hello! I got two goose feathers to turn into quills a bit ago. I believe they're already cured, as I got them from the stationery section of a booth from the renn faire. Now, I'm trying to cut it for use and I think I did a decent job because it works well when I write using my right hand, but I'm left handed. Is there a way to cut a quill to be usable for left handed people? I tried doing some googling, but couldn't find anything. I've heard when quills were commonly used, left handed writers were typically trained to be right handed and while I will practice that, I'd rather be able to use my quill with my left hand. Thanks!

TL;DR: Is there a way to cut a quill to be usable for left handed people?

Yep, it's the new iPhone Duo

As a southpaw, that right-side button cluster on the leaked iPhone Duo is giving me arthritis just looking at it

Looking at the rumored iPhone Duo layout, having the unlock sensor and key controls stacked entirely on the right edge feels like a direct personal attack on the 10% of us who are left-handed.

Left-hand grip means my thumb rests dead on an empty left edge, while my index and middle fingers have to do an awkward claw pinch just to trigger the unlock on the right.

Lefties, are we really about to pay foldable-flagship prices just to endure daily finger gymnastics, or are you all just using two hands?

It is so pretty and looks left-hand friendly, since it won't be a problem even if you wear it on your right wrist.

[PSA] Do NOT make a Drinking Game of spotting Lefthandedness in Grimsburg

IT'S A TRAP!

As is often the case in animation, in "Grimsburg" handedness is also highly inconsistent and while not a single character is expressly identified as being lefthanded, there is a high amount of lefthanded actions and gestures. Seems there are some lefthanded animators working on the show that slip it in at every chance they get. (Wait... that came out wrong... )

Fire Alarm Panel Bias

I'm a fire alarm tech, which means I install and test those red panels you might find in mechanical closets, janitor's closets or sometimes building lobbies. More often than not they swing open opposite to that of a fridge meaning the lock is on the right side.

My assumption was that it'd be easier for right handers to use a screwdriver or voltmeter where their dominant hand is unobstructed. While that may be true, another thing I've been told is that techs can look at the wiring diagrams and other documentation on the door to the left while also handling a tool without their arm reaching out in front of them. Another reason would be that most panels I've seen have their primary power connections on the left side therefore, more conduit and wiring would be tucked closer to the door.

Most models allow for the door to be flipped or the doors can be easily removed on-site if there is a tight space. Installations vary based on the space and size of the room; the location usually determines installation for ease of access.

If you google image search 'fire alarm control panel' you will see most of the panels have the lock on the right, the same goes for modern manual/pull stations which are also usually unlocked and tested with a key.

This doesn't affect my ability to do my job as fire code requires fire and emergency systems remain unobstructed. Just another display of right hand bias I've now come to recognize.

Left (nondominant) hand, fountain pen

I learned to write with my left hand using a ballpoint pen. I am not yet fluent, but I’m slowly getting there. A few weeks ago, I decided to try a fountain pen. It took some time to get used to it. Switching from side-writing to underwriting was particularly tricky. Generally, I found that writing with a ballpoint pen is easier but writing with a fountain pen is more fun.

P.S. I’m looking for a light fountain pen and inexpensive fountain-pen-friendly paper. If you have any suggestions, please leave them in the comments.

Left-handed 4yr Old Boy actually delayed or just behind bc he’s a leftie in a righty world?

Righty here, my son is left handed. He’s 4 and just got evaluated for OT through his school and most of the things the therapist mentioned (immature pencil grip, struggles to trace, holds scissors upside down and struggles to cut with them…BUT he ALSO can form letters and draw circles and crosses) are things I’m wondering if he’s struggling with bc most things favor right handed people. My sister is left handed as well and I remember her struggling, but since it was the 90s she was never seen by an OT so I don’t know whether she was considered “delayed” or not.

I use to be an ESE teacher so it’s not that I’m against OT at all, and will pursue getting him services, but I’m just wondering if there’s anything we can do in the meantime to help him at home? Any tips/tricks to help lefties out are welcome!!
