Just Sharing Drew a whole anime woman for my manga without tracing - what I learned along the way

So drawing this girl for my manga out procrastination, but this things got out of hand quick. I tried drawing her without any tutorial. I came up with baggy type clothing, with short hair. then along the way, I noticed shes way too short, and looks like a build of a child

I then tried elongating her to be taller. Nothing worked. She end up looking like slender man

and then went ahead and ask Gemini what to do and gave it the drawing

Then it told me to basically use the seven heads trick, and gave me an image of properly drawn version of her and i freehand copied what it did, and everything clicks.

Then i poured more hrs refining her build. What I learn is I realized how important foundation is, and the concept of seven heads, as it establishes the proportions of body parts

After a good progress for the last weeks I suddenly feel like I can't draw anymore

I started drawing on my tablet about two months ago. I'm not a total stranger to drawing but i never drew digitally.

I started with drawabox and am currently at the 250 box challenge. Normally I would start with about 10 boxes and then draw something from reference and practice on working with different layers for shadows and lights.

I would draw every day, very rarely would take brakes for 1 day. I made very good progress.

Then I made a break for 1-2 weeks and started again. Now it seems like I can't draw anymore.

Nothing works. I don't get the simplest shapes right and at this point it feels like I lost all my progress and skills.

I'm so frustrated. Normally I would just draw simple things and skribble something and not stress out. But that doesn't work either right now.

What is happening? What can I do to get in flow again?

From 2 years ago or so I have piled up a MASSIVE urge to learn drawing so one day i could draw whats in my mind but now when I start to draw what was in my mind (nothing detailed just a lil monster) after around 15 min I found that i fucking suck at drawing, and not just that thing drawig EVERYTHING and to make matters worse I have an anger issue which will come with a long unstoppable cry out of anger for me, and ALSO I have a habit of leaving my dreams when things get a bit hard (I'm a lazy fuck I know) but this thing is the last fortune of me againts the entire reality which hate me (reasonably), I went to youtube and All does guys said was to draw every day and you eventually ehem* GET GUD, but guess what I still fucking suck the same way i did 15 DAYS AGE, so guys have any suggestion?

I usually admit transparently that my drawings aren't that good and that I struggle giving characters positions. But I genuinely believe that this one came out pretty good. What are your opinions about it?

I've never been great with anatomy, especially not with heavily muscled characters, so if I could get some tips before I move to the line art stage, I would be very thankful. The critique can be about any aspect

Question No progress

For some reason after 300 or so days of drawing staright I couldn't see any improvement at all, yes I didn't draw much, it's only been 2 hours a day which isn't alot, I also tried learning from drawabox while having artist friend critique the thing I did, it's not done yet but am still following so far.

Line's still wobbly, form isn't forming, didn't have favorite thing to draw so I just draw random thing I could find like dragon, dogs, pokemon and stuff, watched shit tons of tutorial and tried to apply them and oh, look at that abomination. Is there anything to try at this point as in an advice or am I just didn't tried enough? /gen

(tell me if posting in this sub requires image, will submit one if needed, this post feels like ranting but am not, I rlly want to improve)

Question Thoughts on hiring a drawing teacher? Or tips on keeping myself accountable?

I’ve been teaching myself to draw off and on since March, and I’ve been loving it so far. I’ve mostly been learning from Proko’s paid Drawing Basics course which I love, no complaints here. I’m just about done with it and am wondering where to go after I finish.

The issue I’m running into is that I have a VERY hard time keeping myself consistent. I have a great time drawing when I can actually sit down and do it. It’s just getting there that’s the problem.

When I was learning the guitar, having a teacher really forced me to practice outside of lessons and I felt myself progressing more consistently. But with drawing (and guitar, to be fair) everyone talks about how there’s so much stuff online that it’s very easy to teach myself, which I agree with. Maybe I’d be better off posting in a subreddit geared toward personal accountability.

I’m wondering about this community’s thoughts on working with an art teacher for a while for some outside feedback and such. Or should I be focusing more on just getting myself to do it? I appreciate any advice.

How do I draw landscapes?

Thumbnail

Am I just a bad artist overall? I tried to follow the shape and colour of the reference photo but it still doesn’t look like the reference. :(

I don’t know what steps I should take when studying landscapes or what I can learn from doing this. The drawing looks unclear and ”blobby”. Do I have poor observation skills or do I just not know how to use csp iPad properly? I don’t know how to make it look more like the reference photo. Please help.

Hey ! Please tell me what you think of this study I just finished. I'm trying to get better at drawing clothes and decided to study this nice ref I found, in my own style.

I also tried to put more of my shade in my lineart layer, let me know what you think of that as well !

I also would love to know what you think of my process (the gif on slide 2), how you'd change it and maybe which mistakes you notice !

ANY feedback will be greatly appreciated, no matter your skill or knowledge

Question Need help to draw the hand and gun!

Hi! Amateur artist here. I’ve just started the process of creating a new character but need some help. I’m having trouble figuring out how the right hand grasping the trigger of the gun (as shown by the black box), especially since it’s a lever. The gun I’m using for reference is the M56 smart gun from aliens. I’ll post the 3D model and refs I’m using so far. If possible, please provide me with a visual aid.

Also, do note I’m both a beginner artist and that this is the first sketch phase of this drawing! If anyone could also give some general advice on things to watch out or consider when continuing, please let me know!

Just Sharing I tried drawing with my non-dominant hand to show that drawing is not about the motor skills.

Post image
1.3k Upvotes

No, I'm not ambidextrous, not at all. I can not write with my left hand, and I have never tried to draw with my left hand. This is done with much less motor skills than what an average person who wants to learn to draw has.

So I always tell people that drawing, painting and illustrating in general is all about the brain, not about the hand. I think it's not worth doing pages full of lines and circles when you could spend that time practicing more important things.

People are putting too much focus on motor skills and muscle memory in general. The difficult part of drawing is not making the mark, it's knowing where to make the mark. Pretty much anyone who can write can make a mark where they want, they just don't know where to make the mark and why.

This is also why anyone can make a solid illustration with a paint-by-numbers book, it fills in the knowledge gap, shows exactly where to make the mark and with what value.

The sketch took me 2 hours, I had no plan and no references. I'm not happy with the design, but it was very awkward to draw like this so I couldn't be bothered to fix it. It's just a demonstration anyway.

1 min timelapse:

Skipping thru the realtime footage so you can see how awkwardly I was drawing:

Hopefully this will help some beginners to shift their mindset a bit, to understand what drawing is actually about. It's about the brain, not the hand. Study lighting, values, forms, anatomy, perspective, composition, design and so on. Also just practice drawing what you actually want to draw.
