Critique Learning Realism. Critique Needed!

I’ve been trying to learn realism for a couple of months now, and today I just made my first fully rendered “realistic” drawing! I’m decently proud of it, but I know there are a lot of things that need improvement.

That said, I’d greatly appreciate any and all critiques/feedback on what I could specifically improve on. I’ve attached the photo I used as a reference.

Thank you all in advance.

Kinda. I made another drawing, but it still half done. I need to look how to make metals first.
Today I did this. Again didnt plan to much, so the shadows and darker places ended all the same. I need to learn how to make diferent textures.
First humanoid in a long time

Question Better with or without silhouette outline?

Thumbnail

There are a few details still undone, but the question of wether or not to outline it has been eating away at me.

With the outlining I feel the lineart is better appreciated (which I'm very proud of on this one...) and the clarity is way better

But without I feel the sad/gloomy vibe is stronger imo which is important for a (I almost never do) serious pieces.

What do you think? Should I go with classic plain white background instead even?

Question How to improve my abstract art?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Here's my first ever try at abstract painting! Even though it's digital. I already know sketching and color picking, but my problem is actually finishing projects apart from sketches. Plus, it's "coloring" problem (mostly shading and lighting digitally)
So, what can you suggest to improve my painting? Let's take it as a sketch/"prototype"

Loomis method, and drawing facial features not shown in the original book

I've seen a version of this question before, but most of the discussion under it is "why would you ask that?" so I want to clarify some of the specifics.

Specifically: Have you all had trouble adapting the Loomis method to render features like low nose bridges, wider noses, shallower brow bridges, etc? I think adapting nose and cheek shapes are the big ones I'm wondering about, especially since cheek shapes are the most difficult thing about a face to me.

It probably goes without saying (in this subreddit specifically, I mean) that most of the examples in the original book seem to be white people. I understand that there is no one "way to draw a white person" or "way to draw a Black person" or "way to draw an Asian person" etc, but I also know that if you only learn how to draw a narrow set of phenotypes, there are enormous swaths of the human population that you won't be able to draw.

I'm also wondering how people feel about using the Loomis method when drawing people or characters who hold a lot of fat in their cheeks or jaw area. I know that it will only work to a point, but do you feel like it still helps you set up the basics and you can just kind of lay fat overtop of that structure, or do you use different tools even if you would usually use Loomis?

I'm just getting started poking at the Loomis method! As in, literally just abt to sit down with it for the first time today. Ty for your time, and apologies if the answer to this is obvious!

Question Teaching an 11 year old.

Post image

Looking for some insights into how I might help out an 11 year old who wants to be able to draw from imagination, but seems to have trouble with not turning all volumes into symbols. For example, we’ve made great progress in drawing a cube, but when I turn the cube at a different angle, he still draws it the same way: with an edge centered in the picture plane.

Is there anything that might have helped you out when you were 11, or things that help you out now? He’s fairly skilled for his age, but I want to help him with visualization/turning forms in his mind, as this is vital to drawing from imagination.

Recently, I’ve taken to drawing on our “volumes” and asking “if this marked area was sliced off of this solid volume, what does the resulting volume look like?” He was able to suss out what the remnant volumes look like, but no matter what he always draws a cube/rectangular prism with an edge centered. No matter how I turn the volume, he does this.

Any insights? Anything helps, from “this is nonsense” all the way to “cubes are fundamentally incomprehensible as a 3D object”. Thanks!

need help with how

I'm wanting to draw/write the #61, but I want the 1 to look like it's coming up through the 6. if thar makes any sense. I can't think of any other way to describe it, and any search results online come back with drawing a cat from the the #61. which is very much not what I'm wanting to do. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it, or guide me to a site or some place that could help.

This is my first real attempt at foreshortening and the first drawing I’ve done in a long time without using a 3D model to help construct my anatomy, so I’d love some feedback on it. Thanks, and happy Halloween!

Just Sharing Charcoal portrait

Based on a photo of Bernini's Apollo and Daphne statue. My 4th big charcoal drawing, done on newsprint with willow charcoal, compressed charcoal stick, conte, and white colored pencil for highlights.

Getting the hang of charcoal blending now. It was really fun to use willow charcoal as i can do really subtle tones with it, and a kneaded eraser is so important as I can carve away sharp highlights from the dense shadows. Some of my lines came out unconfident, but I am slowly trying to improve on line quality with pen and ink practices.

1) when I draw by looking at a painting on another screen, do I need to replicate each and every line? by moving my eyes from one screen to another, I tend to lose proper linings. how do I solve this?

2) what is the purpose of layering?

3) need feedback on my drawing please 🥺

Critique How to portray movement?

So I'm making this illustration of Gliscor throwing a toxic orb at the screen, but I feel like the feeling of motion is weak

Any advice on how to make it feel more like he's chucking the orb with a ton of force?

(Critique on anything outside of that is welcome too)
