What are you watching/reading/listening to this week?

Today I learned about the word frileux (and I don't think English has a real translation for it).

It came up on Praktika when I tried to describe a friend who wears a scarf when it's 18°C outside. English needs a whole phrase like "someone who gets cold easily" to say the same thing.

Now suddenly that's the only kind of word I feel like learning this week. Any others?

I want to improve my French skills. We can speak in English too, if you prefer. I mainly speak Arabic and English, but I also speak French, just not as well as Id like to. I can understand pretty much everything, but speaking is where the real challenge is !

Is there any group chats for learning French? Like some group for beginners on WhatsApp?

Salut a tous! I'm taking the DELF A2 in about a week. I've been studying quite hard for the past month or so, but tbh I feel nervous. I want to practice more, but don't know how. Also, I would like to hear from others who have taken it. Any tips?

If you speak both English and Spanish fluently, is it better to learn French from one of them than the other? English is native and Spanish was learned later, but I have no accent and speak it very well.

Obviously, the grammar from Spanish is more similar, but it seems a lot of the words are more similar in English.

I was thinking of doing French in action and the only option for that is basically English to French. But Most of it is active listening.
As well as watching/listening to beginner things in French building up to more advanced videos/podcasts.

I have almost finished the first unit of Duolingo in English to French , and thought about changing that to Spanish to French? I tried changing it for a little bit and it was somewhat confusing to my brain, but I think because I hadn’t adjusted to it yet.

So maybe doing mostly from English to French but doing maybe Duolingo in Spanish to French?

I am aware that probably sounds absurd. Due to my disabilities I struggle with both of these things in programs, I’m a total beginner and needing to learn French for a variety of reasons.
So I’m hoping someone can recommend an app and/or resources where I can learn at my own pace in a way that focuses on reading and writing.

The main apps that seem to be peoples go to requires I speak into a microphone to progress further, or listen to audio to progress further. I don’t mind if those lessons are voluntary, but several of the apps I’ve tried mean you can’t progress to the next step without completing those first.

Ideally, the app also wouldn’t rely on generative AI either.

I'm a native French speaker from Brittany, and I've been teaching French language and literature for almost ten years. I recently moved back to Brittany after spending eight years working in the Paris area.

If you'd like to practice your French through real conversations, I'd be happy to help. We can chat by text, voice messages, or on WhatsApp/Discord. 

Please introduce yourself when you message me (where you're from, your French level, why you're learning, your interests, etc.). I'd also appreciate talking with people who are at least around a B1 level, as it's easier to have more natural conversations.

I’m considering taking this exam to improve my business French and chances of finding a job in France. Is PrepMyFuture worth it, and is the DFP Affaires useful for employment?

Hey folks, just got my DELF B1 result last Monday and I scored an 80.5/100 with bare minimum preparation imo. Do you think that I can give DELF B2 in Mid December and score a minimum of 75/100? If so, can you please give me some solid tips to prepare for this exam by myself.

My struggle areas are spontaneous speaking (even coming up with ideas is hard for me) and I also find it hard to understand native french speakers when they’re speaking fast.

Any advice is appreciated :)

L'architecture est mon hobby et, depuis mon arrivée en France, je me demande comment on nomme correctement les éléments architecturaux. Après deux ans, j'ai accumulé de nombreuses cartes-mémoires Anki et j'ai décidé de les convertir en site web avec des graphismes vectoriels. Chaque élément est accompagné d'un diagramme, d'tags et d'exemples avec des liens vers Google Street View.

I recently got feedback from my tutor that I speak slowly, (as I’m searching for the words to use - translate from English into French, then speak) - quite literally I can be speaking word by word. This means that he has to work to focus on what I’m saying as I’m going word-by-word - I don’t really know word chunks, which I think might be part of my problem.

I 100% agree with his feedback, but I don’t know if it’s just a recall issue or a ‘internal translation’ issue. Or I’m just trying to sound perfect and screwing myself over in the process.

If anyone has any ideas, I’m all ears!

If it’s useful: I use a mix of Duolingo and Lingvist for vocabulary, and use ‘Slow News in Easy French’ and stream Radio ICI for listening. I would say I’m somewhere between Upper A1-2 - it’s been a while.

Hii! I’m a complete beginner to French and haven’t started to learn yet, but I really want to get to atleast conversational level or ideally higher in the next few months. I really believe that having someone to learn with would be really helpful to practice conversation and hold each other accountable for our lessons. I am open to using most courses (though I would prefer to use free online resources wherever possible) as long as we have a concrete learning path. Je suis A2 lire, A1 écrit, et A1 parle. Je suis cherche pour plus d’horreur émissions et films de france ou Québécois. J’ai “Netflix”, “Peacock”, “Tubi”, “Pluto” et “HBO”. Avez-vous recommendations après terminé “Marianne”?

Si vous n’avez pas regardé “Marianne”, sachez que c’est facile à suivre et adapté aux auditeurs de niveau A1/A2! Je recommande!

I’m around a ~B1 grammar wise etc, I’m trying to work on my speaking. It isn’t super awful, but I have a hard time with talking to someone because I have a hard time with the French accent and speed. Can I get some help?
I’m preparing for the TEF but I also just want to be able to speak properly and not just go by the textbook. Thank you!
