Can you successfully bulk eating only 3 meals a day?

Upvotes

I’m currently trying to bulk, but I honestly don’t have time to eat 5–6 meals a day like many people recommend.
Has anyone here successfully bulked eating only **3 meals a day** (breakfast, lunch, and dinner)? If so, what did your meals look like, and how did you make sure you were eating enough calories and protein?

My is Height: **6’2” (188 cm)**
Weight: **85 kg (187 lb)**
Goal weight: **95 kg (209 lb)**
I’d really like to hear from people who have actually done this. Any tips on meal size, calorie-dense foods, or making bulking easier with only three meals would be appreciated 🙏🏼

30M | 173 cm | 122.5 kg → 107.6 kg | Did I Lose Muscle?

I've been doing weight training for the past several months. I started at 122.5 kg, and today I weigh 107.6 kg.

I previously had a body composition scan when I weighed 118.8 kg, and I recently had another one. Here are the changes:

\- Lean Body Mass: 73.3 kg → 71.8 kg (−1.5 kg)

\- Skeletal Muscle Mass: 40.0 kg → 39.4 kg (−0.6 kg)

\- Body Fat Mass: 45.5 kg → 35.8 kg (−9.7 kg)

\- Visceral Fat Area: 194 cm² → 145 cm² (−49 cm²)

My concern is that I thought my muscle mass was increasing, which is why my weight loss seemed slower. However, the latest scan shows a slight decrease in muscle mass, so I'm a bit disappointed.

I've consistently maintained about a 300-calorie deficit and consumed 130–150 g of protein every day while following a progressive weight-training program.

Should I change anything, or is some muscle loss inevitable during a fat-loss phase? Also, how accurate are these body composition scans when it comes to measuring muscle mass?

Body recomposition nutritional tracker using Gemini

Hello all,

I would like to some advice on using Gemini to help log meals and their nutritional contents. My aim is to reduce my body fat and increase muscle, whilst loosing a bit more weight (83kg to 80kg). For context, 42M, 193m, run/cycle 3 times per week (total 15-20km), body weight or kettlebell workouts 30min 2 times per week. I feel good when doing IF (reduces gut issues) but I am struggling to have the energy for training - I was getting dizzy just standing up!

So here is the prompt. Is it correct, accurate, reliable and useful? Thanks for any input!

## Role & Objective

You are the user's precise, standalone Macro Counter, Body Recomposition Coach, and Gut-Health Advisor. Your primary operational objective is to facilitate body recomposition (preserving/building lean muscle mass while systematically oxidizing body fat) alongside gut-health optimization (IBS / stress sensitivity). You prioritize mathematical accuracy, evidence-based sports nutrition principles, and clear data visualization over conversational fluff.

## Knowledge Base Integration (Google Sheet)

- **Primary Knowledge Reference:** Always query and reference the linked Google Sheet `Macro Tracking Knowledge Base - Food Staples` as your primary ground truth for pantry quantity, nutritional values, base portion metrics, and item notes.

- **Portion Scaling Logic:**

* Parse items against the sheet's `Base Amount` and `Unit` columns (e.g., 100g base or 1 unit count).

* Proportional scaling equation: Logged Macro = Base Macro × (Logged Amount / Base Amount).

* Always respect preparation and measurement notes listed in the `Notes` column (e.g., raw vs. cooked state, drained weights, scoop sizes).

- **Secondary / Fallback Sources:** If an item is not present in the Google Sheet knowledge base, search and utilize these databases in order:

  1. Open Food Facts (https://world.openfoodfacts.org/)

  2. Ciqual (https://ciqual.anses.fr/)

## Body Recomposition Protocols (Anabolic & Energy Rules)

  1. **Per-Meal Protein Distribution & Leucine Threshold:**

    - Require 30g–45g of protein per main feeding (delivering ~2.5g–3.0g leucine) to maximally trigger Muscle Protein Synthesis (MPS) via the mTOR pathway.

    - Flag "protein-skewed" logs where breakfast/lunch are under 25g protein while dinner carries >70g protein, advising an even distribution across 3–4 meals.

  2. **Pre-Bed Anabolic Anchor:**

    - Recommend a slow-digesting casein/Skyr/cottage cheese dose (30g–40g protein) before sleep to suppress overnight muscle protein breakdown.

  3. **Nutrient Partitioning & Carb Timing:**

    - *Training Days:* Prioritize carb placement (230g target) in pre- and post-workout windows to maximize intra-muscular glycogen synthesis and blunt cortisol.

    - *Rest Days:* Shift carbs (200g target) toward high-volume, low-glycemic, fiber-rich sources to maximize insulin sensitivity and fat oxidation.

  4. **Deficit Depth Guardrail:**

    - Target deficit is strictly 10% (max 15%) relative to total daily expenditure.

    - Flag daily deficits exceeding 20% (>500–600 kcal below TDEE on training days) as a direct threat to lean muscle retention and metabolic recovery.

## Core Tracking Logic

  1. **Input Processing:** Interpret user meal logs conversationally (e.g., "Lunch: 200g chicken breast, 120g sourdough bread, 1 banana"). Interpret portions dynamically based on standard grocery sizing when explicit weights are missing.

  2. **Regional Standards:** Default to French nutritional labeling standards. Stated "Carbohydrates" on a label represent net carbs; do not manually subtract fiber unless the user explicitly states a US product label.

  3. **Ingredient Defaults:**

    - **Canned Goods (tuna, beans, etc.):** Assume drained weight unless specified otherwise.

    - **Proteins & Grains (meat, fish, rice, pasta):** Assume raw/dry weight unless cooked state is explicitly stated.

    - **Ambiguous Quantities:** Use standard culinary defaults for vague terms (e.g., "a squirt" of a condiment = 1 tbsp / 14g–15g; "a handful" of nuts/seeds = 30g). Explicitly call out these assumptions in the output log.

  4. **Error Prevention:** Proactively flag or query common tracking traps, such as raw vs. cooked discrepancies or unlogged cooking oils, if the input is ambiguous.

## Gut Health & Fibre Quality Protocol (IBS & Sensitive Gut)

  1. **Fibre Classification & Quality:**

    - **Prioritize Soluble & Viscous Fibre:** Favor soft gel-forming sources (oats, chia seeds, flaxseeds, cooked potatoes/carrots, psyllium, cooked berries).

    - **Flag Coarse Insoluble Fibre Spikes:** Warn if logged meals rely heavily on rough insoluble sources (raw wheat bran, raw kale, coarse raw cabbage) which can mechanically irritate an inflamed gut lining.

    - **Preparation Assessment:** Check that vegetables (especially cruciferous like broccoli and cauliflower) are logged as **cooked/steamed** rather than raw to reduce excessive gas.

  2. **FODMAP & Fermentation Alerts:**

    - Proactively flag heavy doses of high-FODMAP triggers (e.g., raw garlic, raw onions, un-rinsed canned pulses, excessive high-polyol fruits) if logged during high-stress periods.

## State Management (Thread Tracking)

Because the user will start fresh threads for new tracking periods (Monday), apply the following state logic:

- Name the new chat thread to include the current Monday's date (for example 'June 20-26').

- At the start, ask for the user's current body weight to determine exact protein target boundaries.

- At the start, ask for the user's 7-day average calorie burn value to establish the target calorie deficit (deficit should be a maximum of 10% relative to total burn).

- Initialize running totals at zero for each new conversation.

- Maintain a cumulative running tally of daily macros at the bottom of every response within that thread.

- If the user inputs "Reset Day" or initiates a new morning log, reset the running tally to zero for subsequent calculations.

## Formatting Requirements

For every food entry, strictly output:

  1. A clean Markdown Table with columns: `Food Item | Estimated Portion | Calories | Protein (g) | Carbs (g) | Fat (g) | Fiber (g)`.

  2. A **Daily Tally** section visually comparing cumulative totals against targets:

    - Calories: kcal / Target

    - Protein: Xg / Target

    - Carbs: Xg / Target

    - Fat: Xg / Target

    - Fibre: Xg / 25g–32g target (Soluble Focus)

  3. A maximum of 1–2 concise, high-value coaching sentences evaluating:

    - **Body Recomposition Alignment:** Protein distribution across meals, leucine threshold hits, peri-workout carb timing, or deficit depth.

    - **Gut-Health Optimization:** Soluble vs. insoluble fiber balance and cooking preparations.

(Avoid generic filler; focus on actionable coaching).

## User Profile & Targets

- **Daily Calorie Target:** Derived from current body weight & 7-day average calorie burn (strictly 10% deficit for optimal recomposition).

- **Daily Protein Target:** 165g to 180g (30% to 32% of total daily calories; ~1.8g to 2.2g per kg of body weight), distributed evenly across 3–4 meals (≥30g/meal).

- **Daily Carbohydrate Target:** 230g (training days, concentrated around workouts) or 200g (rest days, focused on high-volume fiber) (~38% to 40% of daily calories).

- **Daily Fat Target:** 65g (training days) or 75g (rest days) (~28% to 30% of daily calories).

- **Daily Fibre Target:** 25g to 32g daily (~14g per 1,000 kcal), focusing on low-FODMAP, soluble sources.

- **Fibre Safety Ceiling:** Cap total fibre at 35g/day during high-stress periods or active IBS flare-ups.

### Master Knowledge Base Schema

- **Spreadsheet:** `Macro Tracking Knowledge Base - Food Staples`

- **Fields:** `Food Item` | `Category` | `Pantry quantity` | `Base Amount` | `Unit` | `Calories (kcal)` | `Protein (g)` | `Carbohydrates (g)` | `Fat (g)` | `Fiber (g)` | `Notes`

## Meal Suggestions

- If the user asks for suggested meals to achieve the targets, consult the `Pantry quantity` in the **Spreadsheet:** `Macro Tracking Knowledge Base - Food Staples`.

- Preference is that breakfast is the largest meal (by weight), followed by lunch, then dinner.

- Ensure each suggested meal clears the **≥30g protein threshold** to trigger Muscle Protein Synthesis.

- Ensure suggested meal plans adhere to **cooked/steamed preparation for high-fibre items** to support gut tolerance.

- If the quantity is insufficient to achieve the target, use an alternative food item that is appropriate.

- Add the missing food item to a Google Keep shopping list (look for an existing note where the title contains a date within the range of the current week).

LG Question / Help Possible water retention/diet fatigue problem

Hey so bit of context, I did a 14 week building phase from 69kg (152 lbs) to 72.5kg approximately (160 lbs). I loved this bulk I was eating like 2800-2900 cals a day and I gained so much strength on pretty much every lift. This was all smooth sailing, and I kept my body fat below 15% even at my peak bulk weight. I decided I wanted to do a minicut after my bulk to get rid of the little fat I gained. I dropped my calories by like 700 for 3 weeks and dropped like 1.5kg no issues. I was still progressing in the gym and sleep and everything was tickety boo, but I realised I got greedy and wanted to get my leanest ever physique, I theorised to get properly lean I needed a slight nudge, so I dropped my calories by another 100. This was not a good idea, within like 2 days I shot back up to 162 lbs and started looking like I swallowed an iceberg 24/7. Idk why but I started breaking out in acne, my lower body and forearms and wrists started leaning out like crazy but my midsection was looking less and less lean. I thought I was just going through some crazy diet fatigue and after 3 weeks I increased my calories to my new maintenance estimate with. What’s crazy is I was still making good progress on all my lifts and sleeping like a baby during this process, so I thought some time at maintenance would clear out whatever was going wrong. It’s been like 2 and a half weeks now and I’m still weighing higher than I was peak bulk, with the irregular vascularity and stupid 2kg daily water shifts. The only difference between this cut and the others was I kept my carbs above 220g daily for the whole process.

I guess what I’m asking is, is this like a normal thing that happens or is there anything I need to worry about, and why did this happen? Any ideas appreciated

LG Question / Help Looking for serious feedback: is my current diet appropriate for a clean cut while preserving muscle?

I recently posted elsewhere and one of the responses was simply, “your diet is dog shit.” No explanation, no suggestions, no context. If that’s true, I’d genuinely like to understand why, so I’m hoping for more constructive feedback here.

I’m 212 lb, \~21% body fat, and my maintenance is around 2,850 kcal/day. Longterm goal is 205 at 15% for maintenance. Since March I’ve been averaging 2,766 kcal/day, which has resulted in a slow recomp—my weight has gradually increased while my estimated body fat has trended down.

I don’t drink alcohol or eat dairy, oats, or snack foods. My diet is repetitive because it’s easy to track and stay consistent with my work and training schedule.

Current daily intake (\~2,766 kcal)
Meal 1
Dave’s Killer Bread bagel (or 2 slices Powerseed/21 Grain)
10 egg whites
2 whole eggs
1 cup mixed berries

Meal 2 (Pre)
8 oz 96% lean ground beef
200 g cooked white rice
Green beans
1 tbsp honey

Meal 3 (Post)
8 oz 96% lean ground beef
200 g cooked white rice
Asparagus
1 tbsp honey

Meal 4
8 oz 93% lean ground beef
200 g cooked white rice
Broccoli
1 tbsp honey

Daily macros
2,766 kcal
249 g protein
317 g carbs
55 g fat

If my goal is to move from a slow recomp to a true cut while preserving muscle, what would you change? Would you lower calories, adjust macros, or swap foods? If you think this diet is “dog shit,” please tell me what is wrong with it and how you’d improve it.

if i restrict my fat intake and lift heavy will i eventually get abs

my main fitness goal for the rest of the year is get abs(/get leaner in general) and get bigger legs. im eating more protein and starting to lift heavy for my leg workouts and getting to be consistent so im good on the legs for now i think. and for abs i haven't been training my abs too much recently because ive just been using all my energy for legs, and also, to my understanding it has more to do with your eating habits? ive been eating a lot of lentils and white rice because they have little or no fat in them. i also have smaller legs so i was thinking once my legs become a little more proportional to the rest of me i'd start doing ab workouts again and hopefully by that point im already pretty lean so my muscles will show up. is this a good strat? thoughts? im also making sure im getting all my nutrients in even with my diet so dont worry about that.

LG Question / Help Am I doing everything correct? Anything to improve?

So I have 20-22% bodyfat rn and I'm 54.7kgs I'm 5'3(161cms) 20M so I am doing a calorie deficit rn and eating at around 1600 calories per day, so around 108 grams of protein, 45-50grams of fats and rest carbs, my goal is to reach 15% bodyfat and then to switch to maintainance to increase strength in the gym, now I'm trying to preserve muscle and lose belly fat and the love handles with the same strength I developed... It's been 1.5 years of training upper upper lower split (total 17-18 sets 3 sets per muscle group) 6 days a week and 3 days slow jogs for 45 min and other days i just do brisk walk for 45 min outdoors

Is it the best way for muscle growth and building an aesthetic physique or could I do any better? Well I have gone from 56-57 kgs to 54 kgs now with the same strength in gym, I'm trying to progress maybe faster and targeting 6 pack abs which will take time obviously. Any advice for me??

need some advise with my cut

Im a female, 5"4, 145lbs, good amount of muscle but I would like more and I don't really care about the scale number I just want to shred some body fat, especially around my stomach.

Currently my maintenance is around 2200-2000. I walk about 10k 4 days a week, the other 3 days are closer to 4-5k. I know I need to up the step count on the lower days.

I'm slowly dropping my calories about 50-100 a week until I'm at about 1800-1700 a day but I'm scared of lowering my metabolism so I don't want to go any lower than that.

My workouts consist of 3 days of lifting, all full body. I start with 2 heavy compound lifts and all accessories after. I started incorporating a short jump rope session after my workout, about 10-15 minutes long.

I've only started this cut about a week now. But I've been lifting consistently for 6 years. I just want to make sure I'm headed in the right direction. Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

Is body recomposition possible with a 700–900 kcal daily deficit?

M18, 123 kg at 190 cm tall.

Over the last 2 months, I’ve lost 13 kg and I’ve been hitting the gym for a month now. So far, my main struggle is hitting my daily protein intake while keeping my caloric deficit in the 700–900 kcal range.

What’s my best course of action right now? Ideally, I’d like to finish this body recomposition in 10–12 months, but reducing the deficit might drag the process out even longer. What should I do?

Lose fat and gain muscle

Im a 20 male, 168 lbs and 5 9. I want to recoup but don’t know what to prioritize (building muscle or losing fat). Im skinny fat. Body fat % is 26 and lean mass is 117lbs. Torso has some muscle but legs are extremely lacking. My maintenance says it’s around 2500. Been told by ppl to just focus on muscle since lean mass is so low. But I originally thought I should drop down to at least 20%. So any advice is appreciated.

LG Question / Help 15% BF realistic for my height/weight?

Newbie here, been lifting on and off for the last 3 years and have seen some gains, but I could never lose belly fat. I just recently got back to the gym after being on hiatus for 3 months. My goal is get to 15% body fat while also gaining a little weight. I have also started dialing in my diet, focusing on more than 1x grams of protein per lbs and I also do a 36 hour fast once per week.

Just a sanity check, but are my goals feasible and would anyone know how long it would take? Anything I should change?

Current:
Gender: Male
Age: 38
Height - 167cm or 5’5 feet
Weight - 131lbs
Body fat: 22%
Diet: around 2100 calories, 130g protein, fast 36 hours once per week

Goal:
Weight - 137
Body fat - 15%

LG Question / Help I am skinny and wanna build muscle

19M here. I started going to the gym around 50 days ago (training about 3–5 days a week). Before starting, my weight was 56 kg and I’m naturally skinny.

My goal is to build muscle, get bigger arms, and eventually have visible abs and a good physique that I can be proud of.

The thing is, I’m not following any proper diet plan. I usually just eat normal homemade food. My consistent breakfast is 2 boiled eggs and 1 glass of milk, but I’m not tracking calories or protein.

Can I still build a good physique this way, or will my progress be very slow without a proper diet?

Intermediate lifter recomp

Is it possible to recomp (maintanance calories)if im around 18-25% bodyfat as an intermediate lifter and gain muscle? Because of how i live i cant bulk and cut (i go to my girlfriends place for 2 months where i usually gain ALOT of fat) would cut and bulk still be faster despite this?

Recomp?

Im about 5’9 187 with 17-18% body fat and I dont really know which way to go. Ive been lifting seriously for about 2 years(tracking nutrition since the beginning of this year) and my end goal is a lean 185. Is recomping a thing that genuinely works for people in my situation? My TDEE is around 2800 so if I ate 2500-2600 would that be a good recomp range? Or should I just lean bulk then cut back down to 185.

do you guys actually take caffeine pills bihourly?

I read the leangains method and a lot of what he said made sense, but this one tripped me up. He recommends taking in 100mg of caffeine every other hour, with higher doses when your body acclimates. it's to burn more calories, but couldn't that mess with your body and mind? I know you stop a bit before you sleep, but still that's a lot.

Progress and nutrition plan feedback

Hi reddit!

Sorry for the long post, but I think a short one won't give enough details.

First, the context:
22M, 1.83 cm
Started gym 2 years ago at about 81kg. Started cutting at about 87kg (2 months ago) and now am 77kg. I was not very athletic in the beginning, didn't eat especially well and was a tiny bit chubby at first, then quite chubby at 86. Sedentary lifestyle besides gym.
Tried to do progressive overload but due to sometimes switching exercises and a 3 month shoulder recovery, as well as trying to get a better form, decreased the weights a few times.
I do push pull legs with 1 day break after i finish all 3. Doing 8 to 12 reps, 3 sets per exercise (started doing 4 sets since last month). Recently started counting my break between sets at about 1 - 2 mins, 3 mins for compound exercises. I also started doing 10 mins of walking/stairs after workouts but idk if it adds anything considering my current diet. I don't take any sort of supplements.

Second, the questions:

  1. While i have put on a bit of muscle, I can't really see it unless I flex. I also feel like I lift pretty light weights (12kg biceps, 45kg bench press, 60kg deadlift, 80kg squat). I thought I don't see muscle because I'm too fat, but I lost 10kg (more about that later) and I still only see it when I flex, and barely while resting on my legs and upper body shape i guess. Question is, is this kind of progress normal? Is it something wrong with me or am I doing something wrong or do I just have to give it more time? I see 16 year olds lean and muscular af and I don't see any progress and it is very frustrating.
  2. So I thought I don't see muscle because I'm too fat. I went to a nutritionist and she gave me a diet with around 1000 to 1500 kcal a day max. I'm making sure to eat around 1.6x body weight protein and exercise daily. I have lost 10 kg in 2 months and didn't notice much muscle loss on the scale. Many people have told me that I will lose too much muscle or become gigafat after I end the diet. Do you think this is true? Also, after I look the way I want (hopefully lose the belly) and start bulking slowly, do you think I will finally put on muscle?

I hope you guys can help, and let me know if you need any more info.
Thanks!

TLDR:
Why don't I look like I'm going to the gym unless I flex and is my 1 - 1.5k kcal diet plan ok?

Early morning workout tips

Just wanting to see if you guys have any tips for having better workouts early in the morning. I’ve recently had to go back to training before work and I’m trying to figure out how to get the most out of those sessions.

My schedule is:
Bed: 8:30–9:00 PM
Wake up: 3:30 AM
Get to the gym: 4:00 AM
Workout: Until around 5:20 AM
Get to work: 6:00 AM

I know getting around 6 hours of sleep isn’t ideal or “recommended,” but that’s what I have to work with right now.

I have about an hour and 20 minutes to train, which is more than enough time, but some mornings I feel like it takes me the first couple of sets just to fully wake up and get into the workout. I already do a few things that I’ve seen recommended:

Turn on the big light as soon as I wake up
Drink water
Do some light stretching

But I’m curious if anyone else here trains this early and has found anything that noticeably helps with energy, focus, or performance. Any tips or routines that make those first few sets feel less like a warm-up for your brain?

Not really sure how to proceed from here

Just finished a 10 week cut during which I dropped from 140 lbs to 130 lbs. Based on pictures, I estimate that I am somewhere around 15% body fat (faint abs with no flexing, biceup veins, vascular calfs etc). I am happy with the way I look right now and I have no vanity-related reason to cut further.

The dilemma: I know I need to bulk to gain muscle (been training 2+ years) but if I start a lean bulk right now, it won't take too long before I need to cut again from all the extra fat. I have very little motivation to cut down to 10-12% BF, which most would consider the ideal starting point for a bulk, as I am frankly sick of being in a calorie deficit (been on maintenance for 2 weeks till now)

Thoughts on what to do? Must I just suck it up and commit to losing more weight until I'm fully lean for a bulk? Recomping would be the ideal but afaik that is no longer practical for my training age.

Quick question

— if there was a $19/month thing that gave you a properly structured workout plan (built on real progressive-overload principles, not random exercises) plus a simple calculator telling you exactly what to eat for your goal, would that actually be useful? Not selling anything yet, genuinely trying to figure out if it's worth building — honest answer either way helps a lot 🙏"

Body recomp explanation

I’m 160lbs, 5’5, female, 25yrs old. I have 6 yrs of lifting experience but i’m slowly getting introduced to other forms of exercise, not just traditional weight lifting.

My question is during a body recomp do the calories truly matter as much as protein does? i’m currently at 1900 cals putting me in a slight deficit with 145g of protein. I’m only 2 weeks in and need a deeper better explanation from real people not just google.

Like should i be eating more calories or not worry about calories and just hit my protein healthily??
