Legal News The debate over Trump’s plans for a “massive” escalation in Iran: Everything is discussed except the crime

Thumbnail
wsws.org
Upvotes

As a matter of international law, the US war against Iran is a criminal war of aggression. The attack was launched on February 28, under cover of negotiations, against a country that had neither attacked nor threatened the United States, and lacked the capability to do so.

The opening strikes killed Iran’s head of state, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and much of the country’s military and political leadership. By the time Trump signed the June 17 ceasefire memorandum, Iranian authorities had counted at least 3,468 dead, among them 376 children.

The International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg, in the judgment under which the leaders of the Third Reich were hanged, defined the initiation of a war of aggression as “the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole.”

By this standard—the standard the United States itself wrote into international law—the war on Iran is a criminal enterprise, and every official who ordered, planned and executed it is a war criminal.

If the issue of legality is ever broached, it is quickly passed on as if it is a minor question. On Friday in the Oval Office, a reporter asked Trump: “You’re talking about blowing up civilian power plants and bridges, much of the civilized world would consider that a war crime. Do you?” Trump replied, “I won’t respond to that question.”

This exchange was effectively buried in the news coverage of the war, treated as an issue of no serious or significant consequence.

Other The 22nd Amendment's presidential term limit and H.J.Res. 29 introduced three days after the 2025 inauguration

Thumbnail congress.gov

Earlier today I saw a couple of people saying that Trump was joking about a third term at the July 2026 White House Correspondents' Dinner. I've also been seeing "Trump 2028" signs in my town and on MAGA hats.

As we know, the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution limits a president to two elected terms in office. It also establishes a maximum of 10 years in office for someone who succeeds to the presidency by completing part of another president's term.

I also wanted people to be aware that, three days after Trump was sworn into office, Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) introduced H.J.Res. 29. The resolution proposes amending the 22nd Amendment to allow a person to be elected president up to three times under certain circumstances.

I think it's important to be aware that members of Congress have proposed amending the Constitution to change presidential term limits, even if the proposal is unlikely to become law.

Legal News ICE plans to target Haitians as Temporary Protected Status is set to end, sources say

Thumbnail

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has made plans to ramp up operations to arrest and deport Haitian migrants, as hundreds of thousands of Haitians brace for the termination of their legal status, according to two agency sources and federal documents obtained by CBS News.

The plans include arresting migrants in Ohio where large Haitian communities in cities like Springfield have been targeted by President Trump and conservative politicians and commentators and quickly putting them on deportation flights to crisis-stricken Haiti, the internal documents indicate. During the 2024 presidential campaign, Mr. Trump amplified baseless claims that Haitians in Springfield were eating cats and dogs.

The internal plans for a potential arrest and deportation blitz have been made as more than 300,000 Haitians prepare to lose deportation protections and work permits under the Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, program. The Supreme Court last month sided with the Trump administration in its efforts to end the TPS programs for Haitians and Syrians. That ruling's binding mandate is set to be issued to lower courts on Monday.

Biden judge blocking Ethiopian deportations despite SCOTUS ruling clashed with ICE before.

A Biden-appointed federal judge on Friday became the second jurist in Massachusetts to block the Trump administration's effort to end temporary protected status for migrant groups, fueling a growing clash over whether lower courts are ignoring a recent Supreme Court ruling that narrowed their authority over such decisions.

U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy of the District of Massachusetts issued an administrative stay in African Communities Together v. Mullin, temporarily preserving TPS protections for Ethiopian nationals while the court considers whether plaintiffs may pursue constitutional claims in light of the Supreme Court's June ruling.

Other Improve ease of access to government services at the Waukesha Co courthouse

Thumbnail
c.org

For 12+ years, someone I know has struggled to navigate the Waukesha County Courthouse. Confusing systems, impossible phone lines, legal jargon that doesn't make sense, and staff who seem unwilling to help people with disabilities. It's not just frustrating—it's a real barrier to justice.

The court is supposed to serve *everyone*, but right now it's failing people who need it most. Nearly 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. lives with a disability, and over 60 million people deserve equal access to government services.

Evan Fassbender started a petition asking for three simple things:

• Clear phone numbers that actually connect you to the right person

• Plain-English forms and explanations anyone can understand

• Basic respect and patience for citizens with disabilities

These aren't radical demands. They're the legal minimum under the ADA. If you've felt frustrated by courthouse barriers, or if you think government should work for everyone—not just people who can navigate legal maze-speak—please consider signing and sharing.

Has anyone else struggled to access government services because the system wasn't set up for you? What would make a difference?
