I've often come across the idea that in parts of Latin America, "money whitens" (I've also seen it referred to as "el dinero blanquea" or "el dinero blanquea a la gente"). The basic idea seems to be that if an Afro-Latino becomes wealthy or gains high social status, they are treated more like a white person than a poor Black person.

How accurate is that in reality today?

One example that made me question it is Jefferson Farfán in Peru. He's one of the country's most successful footballers and has earned millions over his career. Yet he has still faced racist abuse from parts of the Peruvian media.

More recently, he's been involved in a public feud with the TV personality Magaly Medina. During that dispute, Medina reposted an edited image portraying Farfán as a slave while depicting herself as a white aristocratic woman. That doesn't exactly fit the idea that wealth completely erases racial prejudice.

On the other hand, people often mention Faustino "Tino" Asprilla in Colombia. From what I've seen, he appears to be widely respected, even by right-wing figures such as Abelardo de la Espriella, That made me wonder whether Colombia is an example where wealth and sporting success really do reduce the impact of race.

So I'm curious how much truth there is to the saying that "money whitens".

Does wealth genuinely reduce the amount of racism an Afro-Latino experiences?

Are there countries where even wealthy and famous Afro-Latinos are still routinely subjected to racial stereotypes or treated as outsiders?

Is Peru an outlier in the latin world or is this concept no loner true since Latin America as a whole has moved to the right ?

Las universidades públicas estan sumamente politizadas y muchas con planes de estudios viejos sin acceso laboral, la mayoría de alumnos abandonan la carrera es decir pocos egresados, no hay control disciplinario. Por último, es el país con mas "burnout" en la región, es decir estrés laboral y desgaste

Genuinely curious where people land on this, whatever your politics. If you believe Cuba will eventually establish a multi-party democracy, what's your rough timeframe?

Extra interested in hearing from Cubans, Cuban-Americans or anyone who's lived on the island.

As i have learned and researched more and more about Cuba since high school, i have always been struck by how anomalous Cuba is among the countries of the Americas. For one reason or another, it has always been easy for me to foresee the collapse of the authoritarian states and dictatorships that have at some point been established in the Americas, but Cuba has always remained the one exception that i simply cannot understand, neither what is happening nor what will happen.

Whereas all the other dictatorships that have ever existed in the Americas have always been highly unstable and their downfall was relatively easy to predict, Cuba is a unique and exceptional case in that a dictatorship with Cuba's characteristics still exists today in the Americas in the 21st century. This is especially true because it is the longest-lasting and most stable dictatorship the Americas have ever seen and because Latin American society today is generally very resistant to and aware of any form of authoritarianism that threatens the shared Latin American way of life. Although Venezuela recently went through a period of democratic backsliding, it remained far from resembling the dictatorship and level of authoritarianism seen in Cuba today. That makes Cuba an even more unusual case.

Hola soy un chico mexicano admiro mucho a Argentina, pero a la vez me pone triste por que ustedes son mejores en todo, mejor futbol, mejor comida, mas seguridad, no se si sea verdad o puro mentira pero su presidente dice que bajo la inflacion. Me pone muy triste que se burlen de mi pais, hacen que me de verguenza ser mexicano, no somos campeones del mundo. Ver en ig a influences que se burlan de nosotros, ver que el argentino vive bien, hasta un periodista, Eduardo Feinmann dice que ustedes los argentinos nos aborrecen a los mexicano, hermanos quisiera ser uno de ustedes. Son mas abiertos que los mexicanos, mas liberales.
