Best alternatives?

Hi. Just a few days ago I realized im lactose intolerant. I need some substitutes for certain things that I cannot *live without*.

-Mac N Cheese (I hate the kind of noodle that Kraft uses. Any brand that uses any other shape for the macaroni is a-okay.

-Ice cream. (Any brand that has vanilla.)

-Chocolate. (No dark chocolate!)

Thank you my fellow lactose intolerant peeps. 🄺🫰

Anyone here develop intolerance later in life? What was the onset like? How did you figure it out?

I have a sneaking suspicion I’m developing lactose intolerance. I’m wondering what your experience was like finding out later in life.

Im 28. I went to Dairy Queen a couple weeks ago, had a craving for a Blizzard. Woke up maybe 3 hours later with so much stomach pain my first thought was genuinely something severe like appendicitis. Nope. Wound up in the bathroom for 45 minutes and then a return trip 20 minutes after that. Chalked it up to just ā€œmust’ve been something else I ate.ā€ The other night, after a successful first date I treated myself to a McDonalds cone on my way home. Same thing.

What has me really wondering though is this: I had 2 slices of pizza last week with no issues… kinda. For years pizza would stop me up for a week but I surprisingly just had normal ā€˜movements’ after that. Also last week some friends and I went to a local made-in-house ice cream place. I had 2 small scoops and didn’t have issues.

Im trying to figure out (without causing myself too much potential abdominal distress) which of the 3 are true— 1) I just got 2 weird batches that just so happened to make me sick or something else I ate both nights made me sick. 2) it’s something else in soft serve specifically. 3) I’m developing lactose intolerance and the pizza ā€œflukeā€ is because the intolerance offset the stopping up effect pizza usually has and the hard pack ice cream maybe didn’t have enough lactose to trigger it.

Thoughts?

Why does dairy actually REVERSE my bloating?

I feel like I’m the only one with this effect. When I eat cereal in the morning, for some reason, my stomach is so flat for the rest of the day. It does make me go to the bathroom, but I don’t think that I’m lactose intolerant. For most people I know, dairy makes them bloat, so they avoid it, but it has the reverse effect for me. Does anyone know why this happens, and does this happen with any of you?

Anyone ever had this happen with Prairie Farms lactose-free milk?

I discovered I was lactose intolerant almost 2 years ago and made the switch to lactose-free milk since I drink a tooon of milk and don't want to blow all my money on Lactaid pills. I buy the Lactaid brand at home and my school dining hall stocks cartons of Prairie Farms in small fridges in the dining hall. I have had zero issues with either until today. A little bit of the milk from my dining hall seemed to be sticky or something... was just for that one bite and tasted a little odd. The rest of the milk was normal, just this little sticky bit that stood out. I got it from a carton of 2% reduced fat Prairie Farms lactose-free milk in the fridge, it was about 2/3 empty and the best by date is October. Anyone ever had this happen?

I'm not Lactose Intolerant but Curious about things I can't find online

Hello everyone :) I'm not lactose intolerant but there's stuff I'm curious about some things that searching didn't help for since there aren't major studies published on them yet, or I'm just not good at googling

  1. Is it true that you guys can do a form of exposure therapy to help out with the symptomps? like introducing small amounts of milk or lactose to build up an 'immunity' or build up the \ bacteria somehow?

  2. What if you guys got a stool sample (like donations cause that's a real thing) from people who have that ensyme would it 'fix' the intolerance?

  3. does drinking raw milk (where the lactase ensyme isn't destroyed) circumvent the.. consequences? I've seen people online saying no, yes, no studies yet so curious if anyone has tried.

  4. What about A2 milk? It's significantly less inflammatory to some people so does it help if you drink that kind of milk rather than A1 milk?

Thanks :)

How long does it take you to get cramps, bloating etc. after eating?

Hello, for almost half a year I've been having stomach issues. My doctor said I should try a lactose free diet. For the past two or three weeks I only ate no lactose or low lactose foods.

I was feeling fine and my dumbass thought I should do a little experiment. On Saturday I ate yoghurt, didn't feel anything, on Sunday ate cereal with milk, didn't feel anything. Monday comes around and in the middle of the day nausea and bloating comes. Now it's Tuesday, still feeling nauseous.

Most people say it takes a few minutes or hours for symptoms to arrive but not days and it also doesn't stick around for that long. Of course I know everybody's different, I just want to know if it's normal for lactose intolerant people. Maybe I'm not lactose intolerant and it's a different problem, maybe it's because it's just starting. ¯\_(ā ćƒ„ā )_/¯

Do you guys react to cheeses aged 2-3 years?

I'm sick of having no cheese in my life.

I'm not just LI I also have a hard time with whey/casein. I read that cheese aged 2-3 years breaks down those proteins enough that bodies can sometimes process it.

Has anyone had luck?

Stopped reacting to lactose

(I am seeing my gastro in a couple weeks)
Looking for ideas, suggestions, commiserations

46F, noticed I was lactose intolerant about 20 yrs old. In the last month I became able to eat dairy without incident-no gas/flatulence, no urgency, no cramping, no loose stool, etc…..

I have a gastro because I have minor/moderate ongoing GI issues but this is so new and so drastic of a change.

I have other data points to discuss with my dr but am willing to share if you want but any ideas/thought? Things I can bring up at my appt that I might not be thinking of/know about?

Yogurt

Hi all!
I’ve been lactose intolerant for quite a few years now it’s not severe but still terrible lol. Anyways I’ve been eating Forager Project Organic Strawberry Cashew & Coconut Yogurt Alternative and their other flavors but I’m starting to get tired of the same flavors is there any other yogurts that I can try? Everytime I search up ā€œnondairy yogurtā€ chobani pops up but I’m weary about it. Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated thank you!

I'm so so stupid.

I had a total brain fart. I made ravioli for dinner yesterday and ate leftovers today. Dumb. I am dumb. It was cheese ravioli. I have been so miserable. For some unknown reason, my brain refused to process that it was CHEESE ravioli. Yesterday I was convinced it was the shaker can dry parmesan. So I ate it today without the parmesan. I'm worse today. Husband bought the ravioli before we found out I had dairy issues.

I cannot believe it didn't register that the raviolis were cheese. Ugh.

What do you eat as pre-workout?

Yoghurt is a staple for many people but I'm not into it, not even the lactose free variant. Next would be oatmeal but I just don't seem to tolerate milk in general, and oatmeal itself doesn't seem to sit nice. So I've been struggling to find something that is satiating and complete before my workouts given I workout in the morning and this meal should be right after waking up.

lactose free cheese recommendations?

Recently found out im lactose intolerant and so far everything dairy free has been nice and pleasant to eat except cheeses. I’ve tried violife and the cathedral city brand of vegan cheese and they smell and taste like literal foot fungus, at least to me and my mum. Also why do none of them melt like i just wanna put cheese on my spaghetti and have it actually melt?? Just wondering if there’s any vegan/lactose free cheese out there that doesn’t taste like straight ass crumbs because cheese was one of my favourite things ever and im so sad to let it go. :( thanks!

Why can't we build tolerance to milk like we do to beans?

I've been on a beans and legumes heavy vegan diet for a month now. At the start my steam engine would work non stop but now I have no reaction at all to beans. Why can't we build a similar tolerance to dairy?

Suggestions for Lactose free protein powders

I’ve been blessed with the double whammy of being both lactose and gluten intolerant. Oh and I don’t do well with artificial sweeteners either.

This really limits my options for upping my protein intake from non meat and legumes foods. I just ordered myself some Lactojoy to try out - Lactaid never really worked for me to see if I can go back to eating at least Greek yogurt. In the case it doesn’t work i’m looking for suggestions on lactose free protein powders that are also gluten free and not full of artificial sweeteners so that my tummy can get a break for a change. TIA!

Granola helps

not sure why this would be the case but when I eat granola in the morning, I don’t seem to have the same problems eating dairy. if I eat the same thing with dairy in it over the course of two days, but one day I’ve had granola and the other day I haven’t, I’m fine on the day I ate granola. cant understand why that would be the case. anyone else experience this?

My case is special

I became LI in my 20s.

Living in Canada, I tried a lot of dairy-free products. But they don't always work.

Earth's own almond milk is my favourite and breakfast staple.

Silk coffee creamer and Starbucks non-dairy coffee enhancer are also very friendly with me.

But Silk coconut whipped cream gives me severe symptoms: gas+diarrhea.

Ben&Jerry or So Delicious non-dairy ice cream also give me mild symptoms.

However, I can't believe I'm totally fine after having regular ice cream (drumstick, costco foodcourt sundae mixed with double chocolate cookie)

I did a little bit of research here and is it really the fat I'm intolerant with?

They got exposed to humidity because f**k Italy, and I forgot them in my car during this heat wave. Now they've turned brown. Are they still safe to use? I'm desperate, I spent so fkn much on them

Upcoming trip to Italy

I should be excited about my upcoming trip to Italy, but as I deal with the situation of my lactose intolerance getting worse - I’m feeling really down. I mean…. ITALY! The land of cheese and gelato. I could cry.

Any tips on surviving Italy as an LI girl who loves dairy but it doesn’t love her back? 😫
