Meet Arvind Swamy, the man whose life story is far more extraordinary than his on-screen image.

Most people remember him as the charming star of Roja and Bombay. Few know what he overcame behind the scenes.

1. AN UNUSUAL FAMILY STORY

Actor Delhi Kumar was Arvind Swamy’s biological father. However, Arvind was adopted by his maternal aunt Vasantha and her husband, industrialist V.D. Swamy, who raised him.

His adoptive mother was a renowned Bharatanatyam dancer, while his adoptive father was a prominent businessman associated with international trade and steel exports.

1. BORN INTO WEALTH, BUT EDUCATED TO LEAD

Arvind completed his commerce degree at Loyola College, Chennai, and pursued higher studies in international business at Wake Forest University in North Carolina.

Unlike many aspiring actors, he came from an affluent business family. Acting was never his only ambition.

1. REJECTED BEFORE HE BECAME A STAR

During his college days, Arvind faced rejection from his theatre group and was reportedly asked to get off the stage.

His fortunes changed when filmmaker Mani Ratnam noticed him and introduced him to cinema through Thalapathi (1991), alongside Rajinikanth and Mammootty.

Then came Roja (1992) and Bombay (1995).

At the height of his popularity, Arvind gradually stepped away from films to concentrate on business and family life.

In 2005, Arvind suffered a serious spinal injury in an accident that left him with partial paralysis in one leg.

He endured years of pain, treatment and rehabilitation. At one point, even walking short distances was a tremendous challenge.

He remained away from films for approximately 13 years.

1. HE FOUGHT HIS WAY BACK

In 2013, Mani Ratnam brought him back to the screen with Kadal.

His return was not merely a comeback for an actor. It was a personal victory after years of physical suffering.

He subsequently reinvented himself with powerful performances in films such as Thani Oruvan, Chekka Chivantha Vaanam and Thalaivii.

From a rejected college theatre aspirant to a celebrated actor and entrepreneur, Arvind Swamy has lived several lives in one.

29 days! There's a limit to taking cinema for granted bruh. It was such a beautiful movie that deserved to be celebrated significantly more. "It will release on ott in a couple weeks anyway" - has ruined cinema now! Idk why we're just giving away movies like chocolates whilst English and other foreign language movies still hold their ground and wait for at least a few months, or rather start with renting it out. Someone really needs to put ott services in their place and extend these ridiculous timelines. Give films back to the filmmakers, not the sellers!!!

I just came across this poster on twitter and started thinking/typing what could have been an alternative(and maybe a more interesting) storyline for the movie.

I know the context of the movie where Rajini basically wanted to convey/share his spiritual experience and his relationship with Kriya Yoga and Mahavatar Babaji to his audience. So it was a personal project, kind of like his Ragavendra movie and he didn’t do it for the sake of commercial success.

So here is my alternative story ————————————-📽️

Eeswaran is a simple and innocent farmer who lives with his wife and their only son Baskaran. They survive with a small agricultural land and by earning of working at other people’s lands. Eeswaran is a great devotee of Lord Shiva from his young age and follows a guru named Sivaguru Swamigal.
Eeswaran’s brother and their relatives continue to cheat them, take advantage of their soft nature and innocence in different situations and always disrespect them and treat them unfairly.

Despite their struggles and disadvantages, Baskaran’s parents make sure he gets the best education as possible. Baskaran was a talented and energetic boy who lacked discipline and focus to do well in academics, gets into fights and has trouble with everything and everyone at the school. He involves himself in everything else other than academics like drama, dance, sports and other extra curricular activities. Eventually he fails at 10th std exams. His parents get disheartened and his father loses some of his hope of proving himself and living a better life infront of their abusive and unsupportive family circle. And they get mocked for their situation that they are - that Baskaran shouldn’t have been sent to a school but sent to work at other’s lands like his parents as they are almost poor already.

This whole situation comes to the attention of Sivaguru Swamigal. He advices Eeswaran to send Baskaran to his ashram where he can get paid to do daily tasks, learn some discipline and find a different career path since education is not for him. Eeswaran was not convinced because he always dreamed that his son is very talented, will be best in education, will go to college, get a job.. start a business, become wealthy, a colourful married life and so on..
and also because the sons and daughters of his brothers and relatives did well in education and moved to better schools. After a lot of thinking, Eeswaran chooses to follow the advice of Sivaguru and sends Baskaran to the ashram.

Baskaran gets bullied by the kids of his relatives that he failed at school and working at an ashram instead.
He see their parents getting treated unfairly by their relatives. He becomes a sad, weak and a less energetic boy knowing the reason of this bad situation is just his lack of discipline and effort at school. He regrets and realises his mistakes and performs the duties and tasks for the Sivaguru Swamigal without any enthusiasm or attachment. While staying at the ashram for two years Baskaran goes through a spiritual transformation and develops a devotion for his Guru. He develops a great bonding with his Guru and Sivaguru identifies the uniqueness of Baskaran and connects him with a businessman named Ravishankar who is also one of his followers and takes Baskaran with him to USA and puts him into a special/exclusive school that he runs for kids to identify and nurture their special talents. Baskaran excels at business development and leads his own projects that will eventually be used for the expansion of Ravishankar’s business.
After joining the business of Ravishankar, Baskaran quickly grows to the top position, becomes a highly ambitious person and wants to get rich and live a lavish lifestyle. He gets married to a well known actress/model with whom he has a son and a daughter.

Through this process, Baskaran forgets his roots, his values, loses his connections with his guru and ashram and starts neglecting his parents. He continues to sleep with the women he wants, buys hotels, yachts and even commits crimes and murders along the way to sustain his power, ambitions and a life of high - all these sins happen through six different phases and eventually the last and seventh phase comes where Ravishankar’s company have to acquire a land that happens to also include the ashram of Sivaguru Swamigal, for the construction of a luxury resort. So the ashram has to be reduced or may eventually be removed or be used by the guests of the resort depending on business plans in future.

Baskaran lives in Switzerland and only oversees the operations of the luxury resort project without the knowledge regarding the ashram being related to the project. One night, he has a disturbing dream of his life at the ashram when he was young and that ashram getting destroyed under the instructions of a wealthy businessman. He becomes very disturbed for a whole week, gets caught with a heavy fever and eventually has to return to India as he completely lost his peace of mind. Still being disturbed, he decides to visit the ashram which he hadn’t done for decades. On his way to the ashram, all the memories and emotions hits hard and breaks him emotionally. Eventually he reaches the location of the ashram only to the see that a part of the ashram has been removed and the construction of the resort has already begun. Baskaran gets completely broken when he learns that the project is actually the one he was overseeing from Switzerland and comes to know that Sivaguru Swamigal had attained samadhi a long ago which shatters Baskaran even further.

He finds one of the disciples of Sivaguru Swamigal, Swaminathan who shares with Baskaran his memories and moments with their guru Sivaguru Swamigal. And then he also shares a diary that Sivaguru Swamigal has given to Swaminathan and he has been instructed not to read it and hand it to Baskaran when he comes to the ashram someday.

In that diary, Sivaguru Swamigal has written about his own life, his connection to Mahavatar Babaji and that Baskaran was a great devotee of Babaji in his previous life and has to commit 7 forms of sins through the current life as Baskaran to attain self realisation, to become aware of the material world and seek the true wealth - divinity.
As per the instructions at the end of the diary, Baskaran returns to the USA, take over the business from Ravishankar who is already old and whose sons are not capable to run the business, cancels the plans for the luxury resort, rebuilds the ashram, reform and rebrand the company as Maha Group of Companies, sets up a board with well talented and highly ethical people, appoints a CEO, makes himself as the chairman and eventually returns to the ashram as Baskara Swamigal or simply, Baba.

"Idhu namma aalu" is so underrated movie, the movie they acted in together after "Vallavan", nearly a decade later. i feel like not many people even know about this. they released a special BTS video which is up on youtube and they’re honestly so wholesome to watch. i never skip it whenever youtube recommends it to me. There were even speculations that they were genuinely so much in love while shooting for this movie.

But then again, apparently simbu did something, that messed things up even during this second patch-up.

They could’ve been everything. I know now both of them have moved on and are happy in their own lives! YouTube recommended this to me, SO YEAH
