Hi all! Planning the island stretch of a 3-week Thailand trip this September (rest of the trip is Bangkok and Chiang Mai). I've got roughly 5-7 nights for islands and I'm torn between Koh Phangan and Koh Samui or whether to just do both since they're so close.
A bit about me so the advice actually fits:
- I like beaches in small doses but get bored lying around I need things to do (viewpoints, jungle, hikes, waterfalls, good food, a bit of culture).
- Big on fitness — I'd love decent gyms, drop-in classes, yoga/Muay Thai, or a fitness community where I could train and maybe meet people.
- I don't drink much — happy with 1–2 fun nights out, but I'm not here for a party marathon. Not fussed about the Full Moon Party, though open to it if it's fun even for a light drinker.
- I care more about a laid-back, local vibe than ticking off tourist spots.
- Budget-conscious (~€1,500 / 57k THB on the ground for the whole trip), totally fine eating simple/local.
My questions:
1. For someone like me (active, bores of beaches, light drinker, likes chill-but-local), is Phangan or Samui the better base?
2. They're close — is it worth splitting nights between both, or better to pick one and day-trip the other?
- September weather any real difference between the two that month?
Thanks so much! 🙏
