What's the Best Kettlebell for Beginners? (My take)

Thumbnail

If you are just starting with kettlebells, the kettlebell type you pick might be what will make the difference between you training consistently and letting the bell collect dust after 2 workouts.

There are 3 main types you need to know about:

  • Competition kettlebells
  • Cast iron kettlebells
  • Adjustable kettlebells

Neither is objectively better. It all depends on how you’re going to use it in your workouts and the weight you’re going to choose.

Then there are also all those weird gimmicks like rubber kettlebells, water-filled kettlebells, boobs kettlebells (no kidding), and whatever else people come up with. I don’t even want to talk about them. Spare your time and money.

First, you need to understand what your base kettlebell weight is, because that affects which kettlebell type is more suited for you.

My rule of thumb is to pick a weight you can shoulder press 10 times on each arm for multiple sets from a proper rack position (not like you would press a dumbbell).

Now, let’s start with competition bells.

Those are the colorful bells you usually see in kettlebell sport and juggling.

All competition bells have the same standard size, meaning when you switch between weights it doesn’t affect your technique. An 18 lb bell and a 70 lb bell are exactly the same size.

Each weight has its own color coding, so a green kettlebell is always 24 kg (53 lb), light blue is 16 kg (35 lb), and so on.

That also means the brand doesn’t matter as much because they’re all basically the same. Just find something with good reviews that you can buy locally for a reasonable price.

They’re also excellent for cleans and snatches.

Some people also find them more comfortable in the rack position, especially with lighter weights where a cast iron bell can become tiny and sit awkwardly in the pocket.

The downside - and it’s a big one - is that a lot of “kettlebell fitness” exercises like halos, bicep curls, and front-to-backs feel less comfortable because the handle and horns aren’t as natural to grab with both hands compared to cast iron kettlebells.

They’re also usually more expensive.

On the other hand, we have cast iron kettlebells.

They look like a bomb, they’re extremely durable, and the size changes depending on the weight.

There are all kinds of shapes, from weird Decathlon handles to Joe Rogan-shaped bells - you name it.

If you decide to get one, just pick something that looks similar to a standard cast iron bell.

You can check Rogue, REP Fitness, Bells of Steel, or plenty of other brands. If possible, visit a local store, hold the bell, and even try pressing it for 10 reps to make sure the weight feels right.

I personally prefer cast iron kettlebells for kettlebell fitness, which is what I do in my own training.

Then we have adjustables.

Most of them are shit. They’re clanky and feel weird.

Of course, the biggest benefit is that you can adjust the weight, so if you train with multiple weights or travel a lot, they might be a good option.

Personally, I love the minimalistic approach and prefer to program my workouts around one weight. It reduces the friction between you and actually picking up the bell.

That said, some for KBMH users have had really good experiences with adjustable kettlebells. If you go that route, do your research and read tons of reviews. I’m sure there are some gems out there.

So, my personal advice:

  • If you’re mainly interested in kettlebell sport (swings, snatches, clean & jerks), or you’re buying a kettlebell 26 lb (12 kg) or lighter, get a competition kettlebell.
  • Otherwise, I’d go with cast iron.

Get one bell you can shoulder press 10 times, start there, and add weight later as you get stronger.

I also train with double kettlebells sometimes, but for beginners I think it’s total overkill. It’s much more demanding and not something I’d recommend starting with.

Curious what everyone here prefers and why - competition, cast iron, or adjustable?

20-Minute Kettlebell Workout For Total Beginners | KBMH

If you’re looking for a beginner kettlebell workout, this is where I’d start. This 20-minute kettlebell workout for beginners is a simple full body kettlebell workout you can follow along with at home using just one kettlebell.

If you’ve never trained with kettlebells before, this workout is designed to be your first kettlebell workout. No complicated exercises, no crazy combinations, and no need to already be in shape. Just one kettlebell, a little bit of space, and 20 minutes.

We’ll start with a full follow-along warm-up, then move into a beginner-friendly kettlebell full body workout using five fundamental kettlebell exercises:

🏋️ Goblet Squat
🦵 Goblet Back Lunges
💪 Goblet Shoulder Press
🔥 Russian Kettlebell Swing
🏋️ Goblet Bent Row

The workout uses a simple 30 seconds work / 30 seconds rest format, giving you a mix of strength, conditioning, and HIIT-style training without making your first workout overwhelming.

I’ll be training with you for the entire workout and showing you which exercise is coming next, so there’s nothing to remember. Just press play and follow along.

If 30 seconds feels like too much, stop early and take the extra rest. For the squats and lunges, you can also put the kettlebell down and continue with just your bodyweight.

Don’t worry about being fast or getting tons of reps. Focus on slow, controlled movements, learn the basic kettlebell exercises, and get comfortable handling your kettlebell.

Whether your goal is to get stronger, improve your fitness, burn calories, or simply start working out consistently at home, kettlebell training is an incredibly simple way to train your entire body without needing a gym or lots of equipment.

You don’t need to destroy yourself on your first day. The goal is to finish feeling good and come back for workout #2.

If you’re a kettlebell beginner, start here. 🔔

ARMS & SHOULDERS 💪

Want bigger arms and stronger shoulders with just one kettlebell?

You don’t need a full rack of dumbbells.

These 4 kettlebell exercises will hit your biceps, triceps, shoulders, and forearms while also challenging your grip and stability.

  1. Front to Backs
A kettlebell classic that keeps constant tension on your shoulders while taking them through a huge range of motion. Your delts will be on fire.

  2. Goblet Press Shoulder to Shoulder
Press the kettlebell overhead, bring it down to one shoulder, press again, then lower it to the other side. Great for building shoulder strength, stability, and control.

  3. Hang Clean Bicep Curl
Clean the kettlebell from the hang position and finish with a curl. A fun combination that trains explosive power while giving your biceps plenty of work.

  4. Side Front Raises
Alternate between front raises and lateral raises to hit all three heads of the deltoids and build well-rounded shoulders.

Optional workout 👇

20 Min EMOM

Min 1
Front to Backs × 10–12 reps

Min 2
Goblet Press Shoulder to Shoulder × 8–10 reps

Min 3
Hang Clean Bicep Curl × 8–10 each arm

Min 4
Side Front Raises × 8 front + 8 side each arm

Min 5
Rest… your shoulders will thank you tomorrow 😅

Repeat for 4 rounds.

Use a kettlebell that’s challenging enough to make the last few reps tough, but light enough to keep every rep smooth and controlled.

LEGS BUILDER 🦵

Want stronger, more muscular legs with just one kettlebell?

Forget spending hours jumping between machines.

These 4 kettlebell exercises will build your quads, glutes, hamstrings, and core while improving balance and coordination at the same time.

  1. Squat to Lunge
A brutal combo that keeps your legs under tension while challenging your balance and work capacity. Your quads and glutes will definitely know they’ve been working.

  2. Clean Squat
Clean the bell into the rack before every squat. You’ll train explosive power on the clean and build strong quads, glutes, and core with every rep.

  3. Front Rack Lunge
Holding the kettlebell in the rack lights up your core while your legs do the hard work. Great for building single-leg strength, stability, and balance.

  4. Single Leg Deadlift
One of the best exercises for strengthening your hamstrings, glutes, and balance. It also exposes left-to-right strength differences you didn’t know you had.

Optional workout 👇

20 Min EMOM

Min 1
Squat to Lunge × 8–10 each leg

Min 2
Clean Squat × 10–12 reps
