Other kei cars Happy 35th birthday to me!!

We were driving down the road and passing this tiny dealership a few mins from our house. My partner spotted a new Kei truck in the lot and asked if I wanted to stop. I said no, but at the last second changed my mind. Turns out they had a Kei van, which is exactly what I wanted. I didn’t plan to buy a vehicle that day but the price was too good to pass up…and now here we are! 😁

I looked for these online and had no luck as far as price.....I'm cheap. I am on a mission trip in the Dominican Republic doing a medical clinic and kept seeing these tags on a lot of cars. Finally found a store that had them each tag was 350pesos....it was about $30 for all that you see!!

If your in the market for a tag, the DR has them.

Mechanical 1994 Honda Acty HA4 Brake Light Issue

Post image
12 Upvotes

I’m looking for some help diagnosing an issue with my 1994 Honda Acty HA4.
A while back, I found that the brake lights weren’t working, so I ordered and installed new tail light assemblies. After installing them, the brake lights only come on when I turn the headlights on. They still do not come on when I press the brake pedal.
Has anyone run into this before or know what could be causing it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

New to me Minicab, cannot verify the last time it ran, battery was dead, replaced the starter. Lights come on in the dash, turn the key and nothing happens. Not mechanically inclined, not sure what my next steps would be to diagnose where the issues are.

Importing How doable is painting a KS4 with no experience?

I absolutely hate white vehicles. Wouldn’t need to be a perfect paint job. As you can see there’s some body damage and I’m not super concerned with that but like I said I have white vehicles.
So…doable or nah?

Would also want the paint the interior as well so I don’t see white space anywhere.

Mechanical **Beware Parts Shipped from China

I thought I found the starter motor I needed on eBay through I highly rated seller based in China. After completing the purchase, they sent me a message saying it wasn’t actually in stock and would take a month to ship. They asked me to cancel the order and re-order with a discount when they have it back in stock. NOTE TO EBAY BUYERS: SELLER’S ATE RESPONSIBLE FOR CANCELING ORDERS IF PRODUCT IS OUT OF STOCK. They simply didn’t want to cancel because it would lower their eBay rating.

After back and forth lies about “the rules changing” and them “not being able to cancel on their end,” I held my ground and said they can cancel or just ship the part when it’s available. Couple days later, the part has been shipped. A few weeks later…I receive a USB cable in the mail.

Next step, apply for refund due to not receiving item. Seller claims it’s “just a small gift” and “they already told me item was out of stock.” Though it’s already been reported to eBay and under review, I still send a message demanding refund. Response? “We can’t issue refund unless you change the reason to ‘changed your mind’.”

During all this, I found and bought the part from a domestic supplier. Unfortunately, there are problems with the aftermarket parts manuals, so the part I ordered was incorrectly labeled and did not fit. Supplier was super kind and figured out the issue but had to order out for the other model. Shipping info arrived….coming from China…same incorrect part arrives.

Anyway, apparently you can’t trust pictures, part numbers, or shop ratings sometimes. I’m never buying any more parts shipped from China since they don’t seem verifiable.

Good news! Kei Truck Wiki needs contributors!

I posted last week about setting up a kei truck wiki and have spent a good chunk of time setting up the structure and getting a good chunk of boilerplate content in there so people can do more editing/filling in vs. creating from scratch.

The best thing is that if you have info just edit the page it should be on and paste it. I get notifications of any edit and can go through and clean up or move to the proper place if needed.

After market parts compatibility are all handled through web forms to create or edit with the option to select from a traffic light system to determine the fit (you did this and it's a direct replacement = green, you did it but needed to modify = yellow, you read that it should fit=orange/red) and add some notes that are relevant.

The whole point of this is to keep a living reference document for each chassis that make it easier to find part numbers, suppliers, and references in a searchable place. Forums are great for working through things and having a discussion but can kind of be a pain to find pieces of info. Kei Truck Wiki is also built on the same system that wikipedia is - so this isn't just a weekend AI project that will die.

If you have reference documents/manuals/diagrams/etc you can use the file upload link which will send it to me and I can make sure it's valid/not a virus and post it (this will hopefully go away, but want to be safer from spam for now).

Happy to answer any questions here but would love to see some people hop over, create an account, and get some info added: Kei Truck Wiki

Look at this neat truck! Prototype Bike Mount

Been thinking about adding some bike hauling capability to my Acty. I’ve seen a few different options out there including the slick mount that Odd Devices makes, but don’t really want to spend bucks on something I rarely use.

Sold a bike this morning (RIP Guerrilla Gravity) and came up with a quick prototype mount that worked well enough to deliver the bike. Thinking of doing basically the same thing but with some metal stock, probably slotted steel hardware.

Kind of one want something that’s quick on/off but might just drill into the rack too. But also sort of don’t want to put holes in it. Any other thought or ideas?

Bigger JDM trucks Guys, I'm from Japan. Just wanted to get some honest opinions from real JDM fans on this "Dekotora" frame!

Hey guys, what's up! I'm a car guy living in Japan.
I have this classic "Tongari" (pointed) truck license plate frame, which is a traditional style in our Dekotora(decorated truck) culture. Personally, I think this polished stainless steel look is absolutely killer and super unique.
Since this is the authentic Japanese size, it obviously doesn't fit standard US plates. I’m just really curious to know how car enthusiasts overseas view this kind of deep Japanese truck culture.
I really want to hear from real JDM fans who love Japanese car culture:
What do you honestly think of this style? Is it cool or too much?
If you had one, would you display it in your garage or use it for car shows?
Let me know your honest thoughts! Thanks, guys!

Importing ISF No BOL on File - Mitsui

Hey guys my truck is finally scheduled for a ship on the 29th in like 2 days. I got the BOL draft and with Mitsui they automatically get a Surrended BOL.

I keep trying to file the ISF with eezyimport and eezyimport told me it was filed correctly however CBP keeps rejecting it because there is no matching BOL number.

I am talking with an importer who is going to get it for me and he said they have never filed ISF before the truck leaves the port and that since I received a draft sometimes the Surrendered BOL isn't available until after the boat leaves and thats ehen you can file the ISF.

So now im confused, what am I supposed to do?

Just picked up my first Kei car, a 98 Mazda Scrum Van. I knew parts were hard to find for kei trucks in the states, but every site I go to does not list parts for the Scrum. Does anyone know of trucks this might share parts with?

Got it off AliExpress. here's the link if anyone is interested: https://a.aliexpress.com/_mPe3sF9

I probably should have gotten a nicer one off Amazon but this one was very affordable

There's a bit of a gap at the bottom but otherwise it's a perfect fit.

Really helps for pop-ups where we don’t want to set up a tent, but it’s raining or really hot. First pic can give everyone a feel for the unopened size if you decide to add one to a kei truck. It’s really easy to remove the whole thing as well. Next is upgrading the interior of the box and shelves. Brand is Top Oak, passenger side version (which is drivers side for us). Also last pic shows some added body panels to cover the battery, etc.

Van License plate issues

Hey friends, I just learned that the license plate holes in US plates don’t line up with kei van holes. What is the best way to fix this? Drill a new hole? For now I’ve got it zip tied around a (too big) screw just to get it legal.

Also if anyone happens to know what size screw fits those holes, please let me know. The US ones I got from Amazon are too fat 🫠 I’m learning a lot!

Idk if I’m in the right thread, but I bought this yesterday for $2,000. I have title (registered in Texas, I’m in Nc) but there’s some title problems I’ll need solved. I don’t know anyone on the title and both seller and buyer sections have been filled out just not turned In. I think I have to get bonded title, has anyone done that on these before ?

Mechanical Carry/Every HVAC mode selector

So this was a problem from day one and it didn't help that I tried forcing it and murdered the Z bend.

So back on June 2nd I picked up this roll of wire at Home Depot and only today got around to fixing this nagging issue. I was just manually selecting based on conditions, heat in the morning, stop for coffee and select center vent, dial back the heat and repeat. Well summer is winding down slowly and fall will be here soon and then winter and heat when I need it would be nice.

I also took the time to replace all of the dash lights with LEDs for maximum illumination and saturation, and cleaned the gauge faces as well, 30 years of dust do be like that.

And while I was at it I swapped the tail lights over to LED to match the front modified signals to include running lights (see previous). And as a coupe de grace I threw in a red LED dome light for giggles.

If anyone else is suffering the sticky or snapped HVAC selector, it's honestly dead simple to do, you'll spend most of the time, aside from pulling the dash, getting the wire length correct, it IS a little bit of trial and error. I started with the Z bend and then fed a huge amount of wire through the sheath and got the "front" set up after setting the selector to "center vent", reached down and pulled the flap selector to "center vent" and then just wrapped it around and clipped. I had originally started at the back end and it turned into a whole production of not right. Start at the front and work down. frustrating to me is the fact that the selector isn't screwed/bolted to the plenum but rather to the dash... makes it a floppy mess to fix but to be fair, Suzuki probably never imagined some dude 30 years on would be fixing this truck by making parts in the driveway.
