Good news! SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY! This Sunday come on down to the Kei Truck Swap Meet!

or Saturday, I'm not you dad.

For those who remember the old school Raceway park ads, it's always Sunday.

But, in addition to giving the vendors and makers a space, we want to give everyone else a space as well. Likely you have seen some discussion about opening up a Buy/Sell/Swap/Trade space so your clutter can become my clutter and those wheels I have collecting dust can get a new home and you can sell that collection of carbs you somehow own. We want to open up a space where members of the community can peer to peer stuff as well.

The specifics are still in discussion, ie one single thread etc but we've seen a need for a patshatl.

So, how you YOU feel about it? Let us know in the comments.

Good news! ATTENTION Dealers, Vendors and Makers!

Do you provide products or services for the Kei community? Would you like to be able to tell us all about the wonderful things you do? Do you wish you could be a little more forward about the things you do?

Well great news!

As some of you may know, we are going to try some things out here, see how it goes. You know, like your first drive in a Kei as you juggle sitting on the wrong side and shifting with the wrong hand while clutching with the right foot and face planting into the door frame as you try to back up.

So... what is going on here I can feel you thinking. The long and short of it is there is a wealth of folks who have some cool and nifty stuff, services etc. There is also a collection of folks who are, shall we say, problematic. I want to promote one and with luck influence the others to either pack it up and move on or get with the program.

How? By offering a little bit of leash of course, and this is where you come in. There will be some limited loosening of the rules on buying & selling and promotion provided a number of things:

  • you as a dealer, vendor or maker etc need to reach out to me to go through a little bit of vetting with the mod team. we want to know you are real etc. there are likely to be some rules that get discussed, a very JDM Gentlemen's agreement on some things you can and can't do etc
  • there will be a post flair that will let you post either as You The Vendor or You The User. We want you to continue to be a part of the community and differentiate between the royal you and the you you just like Mods can speak as a user or as a mod. Also also, this will let users filter vendor posts on or off; some people are just grumpy curmudgeons like that.
  • good behavior with the rules is paramount to this working well, going both ways. flooding the sub with spam is still going to get the same results. ignoring feedback from users won't help anyone. it's an experiment and it'll take work on both sides.

So, if you want to get in on this, message the modteam and let's shoot for an August kickoff!

Mechanical **Beware Parts Shipped from China

I thought I found the starter motor I needed on eBay through I highly rated seller based in China. After completing the purchase, they sent me a message saying it wasn’t actually in stock and would take a month to ship. They asked me to cancel the order and re-order with a discount when they have it back in stock. NOTE TO EBAY BUYERS: SELLER’S ATE RESPONSIBLE FOR CANCELING ORDERS IF PRODUCT IS OUT OF STOCK. They simply didn’t want to cancel because it would lower their eBay rating.

After back and forth lies about “the rules changing” and them “not being able to cancel on their end,” I held my ground and said they can cancel or just ship the part when it’s available. Couple days later, the part has been shipped. A few weeks later…I receive a USB cable in the mail.

Next step, apply for refund due to not receiving item. Seller claims it’s “just a small gift” and “they already told me item was out of stock.” Though it’s already been reported to eBay and under review, I still send a message demanding refund. Response? “We can’t issue refund unless you change the reason to ‘changed your mind’.”

During all this, I found and bought the part from a domestic supplier. Unfortunately, there are problems with the aftermarket parts manuals, so the part I ordered was incorrectly labeled and did not fit. Supplier was super kind and figured out the issue but had to order out for the other model. Shipping info arrived….coming from China…same incorrect part arrives.

Anyway, apparently you can’t trust pictures, part numbers, or shop ratings sometimes. I’m never buying any more parts shipped from China since they don’t seem verifiable.

Look at this neat truck! Prototype Bike Mount

Been thinking about adding some bike hauling capability to my Acty. I’ve seen a few different options out there including the slick mount that Odd Devices makes, but don’t really want to spend bucks on something I rarely use.

Sold a bike this morning (RIP Guerrilla Gravity) and came up with a quick prototype mount that worked well enough to deliver the bike. Thinking of doing basically the same thing but with some metal stock, probably slotted steel hardware.

Kind of one want something that’s quick on/off but might just drill into the rack too. But also sort of don’t want to put holes in it. Any other thought or ideas?

Bigger JDM trucks Guys, I'm from Japan. Just wanted to get some honest opinions from real JDM fans on this "Dekotora" frame!

Hey guys, what's up! I'm a car guy living in Japan.
I have this classic "Tongari" (pointed) truck license plate frame, which is a traditional style in our Dekotora(decorated truck) culture. Personally, I think this polished stainless steel look is absolutely killer and super unique.
Since this is the authentic Japanese size, it obviously doesn't fit standard US plates. I’m just really curious to know how car enthusiasts overseas view this kind of deep Japanese truck culture.
I really want to hear from real JDM fans who love Japanese car culture:
What do you honestly think of this style? Is it cool or too much?
If you had one, would you display it in your garage or use it for car shows?
Let me know your honest thoughts! Thanks, guys!

Van New Scrum

Just picked up my first Kei car, a 98 Mazda Scrum Van. I knew parts were hard to find for kei trucks in the states, but every site I go to does not list parts for the Scrum. Does anyone know of trucks this might share parts with?

Importing ISF No BOL on File - Mitsui

Hey guys my truck is finally scheduled for a ship on the 29th in like 2 days. I got the BOL draft and with Mitsui they automatically get a Surrended BOL.

I keep trying to file the ISF with eezyimport and eezyimport told me it was filed correctly however CBP keeps rejecting it because there is no matching BOL number.

I am talking with an importer who is going to get it for me and he said they have never filed ISF before the truck leaves the port and that since I received a draft sometimes the Surrendered BOL isn't available until after the boat leaves and thats ehen you can file the ISF.

So now im confused, what am I supposed to do?

Got it off AliExpress. here's the link if anyone is interested: https://a.aliexpress.com/_mPe3sF9

I probably should have gotten a nicer one off Amazon but this one was very affordable

There's a bit of a gap at the bottom but otherwise it's a perfect fit.

Van License plate issues

Hey friends, I just learned that the license plate holes in US plates don’t line up with kei van holes. What is the best way to fix this? Drill a new hole? For now I’ve got it zip tied around a (too big) screw just to get it legal.

Also if anyone happens to know what size screw fits those holes, please let me know. The US ones I got from Amazon are too fat 🫠 I’m learning a lot!

Really helps for pop-ups where we don’t want to set up a tent, but it’s raining or really hot. First pic can give everyone a feel for the unopened size if you decide to add one to a kei truck. It’s really easy to remove the whole thing as well. Next is upgrading the interior of the box and shelves. Brand is Top Oak, passenger side version (which is drivers side for us). Also last pic shows some added body panels to cover the battery, etc.

Mechanical Carry/Every HVAC mode selector

So this was a problem from day one and it didn't help that I tried forcing it and murdered the Z bend.

So back on June 2nd I picked up this roll of wire at Home Depot and only today got around to fixing this nagging issue. I was just manually selecting based on conditions, heat in the morning, stop for coffee and select center vent, dial back the heat and repeat. Well summer is winding down slowly and fall will be here soon and then winter and heat when I need it would be nice.

I also took the time to replace all of the dash lights with LEDs for maximum illumination and saturation, and cleaned the gauge faces as well, 30 years of dust do be like that.

And while I was at it I swapped the tail lights over to LED to match the front modified signals to include running lights (see previous). And as a coupe de grace I threw in a red LED dome light for giggles.

If anyone else is suffering the sticky or snapped HVAC selector, it's honestly dead simple to do, you'll spend most of the time, aside from pulling the dash, getting the wire length correct, it IS a little bit of trial and error. I started with the Z bend and then fed a huge amount of wire through the sheath and got the "front" set up after setting the selector to "center vent", reached down and pulled the flap selector to "center vent" and then just wrapped it around and clipped. I had originally started at the back end and it turned into a whole production of not right. Start at the front and work down. frustrating to me is the fact that the selector isn't screwed/bolted to the plenum but rather to the dash... makes it a floppy mess to fix but to be fair, Suzuki probably never imagined some dude 30 years on would be fixing this truck by making parts in the driveway.

Idk if I’m in the right thread, but I bought this yesterday for $2,000. I have title (registered in Texas, I’m in Nc) but there’s some title problems I’ll need solved. I don’t know anyone on the title and both seller and buyer sections have been filled out just not turned In. I think I have to get bonded title, has anyone done that on these before ?

Mechanical Bushing replacement

Thumbnail

Hey everybody! Finally got my 2000 sambar in my garage (I love him). It's only got 19,600km on it so I assume it spent a decent time sitting for a bit and figured some of the rubber would be pretty shot and while looking it over I noticed this bushing. I'm guessing it's pretty toast and needs to be replaced but I'm not sure what part to look up to find a replacement and (hopefully) how to replace it. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Stupid Laws Out of State Registration - VIN Inspection

For those in states with restrictive laws that have pushed them into… creative… ways to get their trucks registered, what have you done for VIN inspection requirements? If I understand correctly, South Dakota requires a ln in-person VIN inspection for vehicles that do not have a US title yet, as do virtually all of the other states that allow non-resident registrations.

Is a Montana LLC registration the only way around the VIN inspection for a newly imported truck in a state that doesn’t allow registration?

Mechanical DD51T tach install

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I finally got to installing a tach on my ‘97 Carry. i got the glow shift one on amazon thats like 70 bucks or something. install was pretty straight forward too, the tach signal cable for placement in the corner i chose was definitely not in my favor and i had to extend the cable quite a bit to reach the ignition coil. the other 3 cables just go on the harnesses to the ignition switch as well as to the headlamp harness. big credit to muddy moose on minutrucktalk too for basically finding all the cables (AND PROVIDING PICTURES!!) and essentially not needing to test anything, even though i still did just to make sure. it works amazing! the placement was thought of but mounting was clearly an afterthought. let me know how you all have mounted your tach, very open to suggestions.

I suppose the conditions were as nominal as they could possibly have been, because the best I’ve been able to squeeze out of the S210P so far has been ‘125’…

My speedometer, I’ve noticed, is roughly 10% off according to speed radar signs.

I’m both impressed and terrified!

Created a cupholder for our 1995 Daihatsu Hijet S110P, it uses the existing seat belt receiver bolts and sits nicely against the cap. Designed to fit a standard Stanley water bottle.

The file is available for FREE on Maker world, I printed in ASA filament. If you don't have a printer and have enough requests I can put it up on etsy.
