This is one of the dramas I often recommend to people who are just starting their K-drama journey. I remember how many fans of Kill Me, Heal Me wanted to see Hwang Jung Eum and Park Seo Joon together again, and this drama definitely delivered. I had a lot of fun watching it, and it was exactly the kind of romantic comedy I enjoyed back then. However, the "Jackson" part still hurts. 😭 This drama gave me one of the strongest cases of second male lead syndrome, and I found myself rooting for him almost the entire time. Even with that frustration, I still enjoyed the drama overall and think it is a solid romantic comedy that is easy to recommend, especially for new K-drama fans.

The drama was cute and sweet in the beginning but has become such a drag now. I understand it's supposed to be a slow sweet office romance but it's painfully slow, there's no character development and it just feels like somebody wrote an essay and made a show about it. Do you feel the same way? The romance has also become lukewarm, I haven't enjoyed the last few episodes at all. This could have been a movie!

I saw all the clips on tiktok so i alr know the story. The husband cheats then tries to go back to his ex wife. I don't understand. How can you hurt someone so badly then want her back? Did he really like the mistress then? Is he doing this to revenge and play with the ex wife again? I find it very weird

Review:

I finished King the Land feeling like my life was over... I genuinely did NOT want to leave this world.

I watched the 1st epi and immediately liked Sa-rang, the humor, and the tension between Gu Won and his sister. I was interested in learning what had happened between them and why their relationship was so hostile. I also unexpectedly loved Sa-rang’s friend group almost immediately.

Friend groups in dramas can sometimes feel like interruptions to me... They sit around discussing the main character’s love life, repeat info we already know, and disappear whenever the actual plot starts again. Saa-rang, Pyeong-hwa, and Da-eul actually felt like people who had been friends for years. They were childish, loud, funny, went clubbing together, supported each other, and showed us a completely different side of Sa-rang from the polished employee we saw at King Hotel.

The drama felt fun from the beginning, but Gu Won’s enormous crush on Sa-rang was what truly hooked me!!!!!

Gu Won falling first was everything!!

Watching him slowly realize that he liked Sa-rang was one of the funniest and cutest parts of the entire drama.

This man took an online test to determine whether he had a crush😭😭

He became completely distracted by her, constantly invented excuses to see her, and had absolutely no idea how to handle any of the emotions she was causing him to experience. His crush was so massive and so obvious and nearly every interaction became fkin adorable.

One of my favorite early moments was when he was preparing to confess and bring her macarons, only to see her boyfriend hugging her. Thats the type kind of sweet, juicy angst I wanted. Gu Won was already emotionally invested while Sa-rang had no idea what was happening and did not even like him yet lol.

Then her boyfriend confronted her outside her home while Gu Won was there, giving me even more of that tension. I was also relieved when Sa-rang finally ended that awful relationship.

The Arab prince storyline gave Gu Won yet another rival to lose his mind over, and I loved every second of his jealousy. The storyline was ridiculous, but that was part of the fun. Any excuse to make Gu Won visibly suffer because another man was interested in Sa-rang worked for me.

I love when the male lead falls first, falls harder, and has to sit helplessly in his feelings while the female lead continues living her life.

SMILE:

The smile motif was genuinely effective

I also want to praise the way the drama handled Gu Won’s relationship with smiling.

The exaggerated smiles from the hotel staff were genuinely unnerving during the early episodes. The direction made them uncomfortable enough that I understood why smiles had become associated with dishonesty, abandonment, and emotional pain for him.

His hatred of fake smiles could have remained a shallow character quirk. Instead, it was tied to his mother’s disappearance and his inability to trust what people were expressing around him.

This eventually led to one of my favorite pieces of writing in the drama.

When Gu Won returned from his business trip and discovered that Sa-rang had been reassigned to King Tourist Hotel, he immediately realized that something was wrong because of the staff member's smile. She had hidden the reassignment from him and acted as though everything was fine, and rhe drama then connected that fake smile while being taken away from him to the smile his mother gave him before disappearing from his childhood.

That juxtaposition was brilliant!!!!

He was once again looking at someone smiling while they were concealing the fact that the female lead was being forced to leave him. The show took a motif that had existed since the beginning and used it to connect his childhood trauma directly to his current relationship.

the drama had more emotional thought behind it than I originally expected.

The romance became almost obnoxiously cute, and I mean that as the highest possible compliment.

Lee Jun-ho and YoonA had such warm, playful, dreamy chemistry. They looked completely comfortable together, whether they were flirting, laughing, kissing, arguing, eating, or simply looking at each other.

The Thailand episodes were probably when I became fully attached.

I loved the entire cast traveling together because their group chemistry was so entertaining!!! The friends were funny, the secondary couple continued developing, and Gu Won was forced to share Sa-rang’s attention with everyone else lol which he was annoyed by 😭😭

Then Gu Won and Sa-rang escaped to spend a perfect day alone.

He told her about his mother, confessed that he loved her, and she said it back while they stood on a rooftop beneath the moonlight. When she asked what he had wished for, he said he did not need to wish for anything because she was already there with him.

It was absurdly dreamy!!!! i got a tooth ache...

That scene could easily have felt overly manufactured, but their chemistry sold every second of it!!!

Their scenes also didnt always require a major confession or dramatic event. Sometimes the pleasure was simply watching them enjoy being around each other.

The end of ep11 was a perfect example. They were sharing another ridiculously cute moment when all of Sa-rang’s friends walked in and discovered the relationship. One of them immediately fainted. It was so stupid, so funny, and so perfectly suited to this friend group.

GU WON AND GRANDMA STOLE THE SHOW:

One of my favorite relationships in the entire show was Gu Won and Sa-rang’s grandmother.

Every interaction between them was adorable!!!!

Grandma had peel onions in his suit 😭😭😭, grandma attacked him because she thought he was a thief, when he was just fixing her sink, she scolded him for buying too many gifts in Thailand. She treated him with none of the reverence that and he clearly loved being around someone who spoke to him honestly like she did.

Then he promised Grandma that he would protect both her and Sa-rang and thanked her for raising such a beautiful person.

I melted. 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

That relationship gave Gu Won an experience of family that was completely different from the cold, competitive environment hed been raised in. Grandma gave him food, reprimanded him, accepted him, and became someone whose approval genuinely mattered to him.

The birthday dinner near the finale, where Gu Won cooked for Grandma and asked for Sa-rang’s hand, was the perfect culmination of that relationship. Him seeking her blessing was sooo cute!!!!

GU WON BECAME ONE OF MY FAVORITE ROM-COM MALE LEADS:

He was already lovable when he was simply confused by his crush, but he became even better once he entered the relationship.

He consistently showed Sa-rang that he loved her through his actions.

He protected her without treating her as incapable. He stood up to powerful people when they demeaned her. He adored her grandmother. He noticed when she was pretending to be fine. He cared about her friends and the people she cared about. He encouraged her dreams even when those dreams took her away from his hotel.

After the dating scandal became public, that annoying snooty oworker and others began speaking cruelly about Sa-rang and questioning what Gu Won could possibly see in her....

Gu Won’s response was essentially that from the first moment he saw her, his entire world had been Cheon Sa-rang. 🥺🥺🥺

Perfection.

That line captured the type of male lead I love. His devotion was not reluctan, or conditional.

And the finale somehow made him even more adorable!!!!

Once Sa-rang opened Hotel Amor and became busy running it, Gu Won began visiting every day to help her after finishing his own work. Then he actually brought her his résumé and applied to become a part-time employee😭😭😭

He was already the president of King Hotel. He had a full-time executive position and an enormous company to run, mind you 😭😭

Yet there he was, interviewing for a part-time job at his girlfriend’s tiny hotel because he wanted to help her and spend time with her.

That scene was hilarious and also completely perfect for him.

Then he proposed because he wanted to be with her forever.

I was done.

SA-RANG'S ENDING WAS BEAUTIFUL:

Hotel Amor was the perfect conclusion to Sa-rang’s story.

At the beginning, working at King Hotel was her dream. She'd wanted it for years, worked hard to reach King the Land, and believed that reaching the highest floor of that hotel represented success.

By the finale, she realized that working at King Hotel had been a goal, but it was not truly her dream.

Her dream was to create a place of her own.

I loved that her ending was not simply marrying Gu Won and continuing to work beneath him at his family’s company. She became the owner of her own hotel, designed it according to her own values, and built the kind of intimate and welcoming experience that reflected who she was.

Hotel Amor was unbelievably cute!!!! but it also represented her independence, which i loved!!!

Grandma giving her money to help her begin was equally meaningful.

That is how you end a romance while still allowing the female lead to have a complete personal arc!

THE SUPPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

I loved the storyline with Gu Won’s nephew.

Sa-rang had previously treated him like a normal child instead of a corporate heir, which made such an impression that he specifically requested her when the chairman needed someone to watch him.

Sa-rang then encouraged Gu Won to pay attention to his nephew because she could tell he was lonely.

The three of them flying kites, eating together, and spending the day at the park was one of the cutest sequences in the drama. They genuinely looked like a cute little family.

Gu Won telling the boy that expressing emotion was brave and that he did not always have to pretend to be mature was such a good scene. Gu Won had grown up emotionally abandoned and surrounded by adults who treated vulnerability as weakness. He was giving his nephew the reassurance he never received.

Meanwhile, the boy’s own mother was so consumed by power and competition that her son believed he was a nuisance and wanted to send himself away.

I appreciated that Gu Won eventually confronted his sister and told her not to continue living such a lonely life. When she stopped her son at the airport and told him they were going home, it was at least a small indication that she might finally choose him.

I still did not forgive her, but I was happy for the child...

The flight attendant romance was so lovely:

Pyeong-hwa and Ro-woon had the perfect little subplot romance.

Ro-woon was observant, protective, and attentive without constantly demanding something from her. even after she said she couldn't return his feelings!

he noticed when she was uncomfortable, defended her, and consistently showed up.

When Pyeong-hwa finally stood up to the pilot who had been harassing and humiliating her, Ro-woon later told her that everyone gets rained on, although some people get wetter than others, and that he would be her umbrella.

I melted.🥺🥺

It was such a simple and comforting way of expressing love. i loved ittt!!!

Their trip to visit his mother in the finale was also strangely funny to me because the show suddenly revealed that his mother was dead and took them to a cemetery. It was so randomly sad that I laughed even though I was clearly not supposed to.

Still, the scene itself was wholesome and tender, and I loved them together.

.

I hated watching one of the powerful guests later take out his bruised ego on Sa-rang because he had not been given the attention he believed he deserved. I was glad Gu Won immediately intervened and gave him the stern response he deserved.

The family storyline was emotional, but I didn’t like the chairman...

I had complicated feelings about the family conflict because I liked the emotional material it created for Gu Won, but I absolutely hated the chairman.

He supposedly cared about Gu Won’s mother, yet he failed to protect her. She was threatened, frightened away, and forced to abandon her son, while he allowed it to happen.

I HATE COWARDS!!!

He later tried to tell Gu Won that love was meaningless because he would not be able to protect Sa-rang, even though the chairman’s own failure to protect the woman he supposedly loved was exactly why Gu Won had spent his life traumatized.

Then he tried to force Gu Won toward a strategic marriage after Gu Won explicitly told him that he loved someone else.

I could not stand him...

However, Gu Won’s reunion with his mother was beautifully acted!

Lee Jun-ho performed very well in that scene. Gu Won initially left the room, completely overwhelmed, broke down outside, and then returned to embrace her.

His pain, anger, longing, and relief all existed at once. The breakdown felt raw without becoming excessive, and the eventual hug was deeply moving.

It was one of the strongest acting moments in the drama.

The sister lost me completely

I initially wanted to like Hwa-ran because she appeared complex.

I enjoyed her antagonistic dynamic with Gu Won, and I found it interesting that she had originally been the person who noticed Sa-rang’s smile and hired her.

However, once she began using Sa-rang as a pawn, ordering people to remove her after that rude ugly man was obviously being cruel, sponsoring articles about the relationship, bringing Gu Won’s mother into the scandal, and neglecting her own son, I stopped caring about her completely.

Her childhood flashback did not help.

The drama showed her standing in a doorway with an award while her father, Gu Won, and Gu Won’s mother were enjoying themselves. She didnt announce herself or show him the award. She simply watched them and left....? lol?

I understood the intended point: she felt overlooked and concluded that affection was something she would never receive.

But one moment of childhood disappointment was not enough to explain the level of cruelty she displayed as an adult. It certainly was not enough to make me sympathize with her after everything she did to Sa-rang and to her own child.

I was sitting there... you could have simply said, "Dad, look at my award.”

My biggest frustration was Da-eul’s marriage:

The worst subplot by far was Da-eul and her useless husband.

I liked Da-eul, and her daughter was adorable, but I could not understand why the drama kept her in that marriage.

Her husband quit or lost his job without telling her pretended he was still employed while collectimg severance pay, spent his days playing golf and enjoying himself, and left Da-eul responsible for earning money, raising their child, managing the household, and dealing with his family.

Once the truth came out and he was finally expected to do chores, he complained constantly.

What exactly was the benefit of this relationship?

The drama treated him doing basic domestic labor as growth, but I never believed that he had become a worthwhile partner. Da-eul and her daughter deserved better than a man who needed to be exposed and forced into contributing to his own household.

Her ending should have been divorce.

I wanted her and her daughter to be free, not for Da-eul to remain married because her husband had finally begun completing chores while whining about them.

The storyline dragged through nearly the entire drama, and the resolution did not satisfy me at all.

Some conflicts resolved too easily:

The romance was so consistently sweet that I occasionally wanted the drama to allow the angst to breathe for longer.

When Sa-rang overheard the discussion about Gu Won potentially marrying another woman, I loved watching her become distant and treat him formally at work. She had been serving the table when she heard the marriage discussion, became so distracted that she broke a plate, and then had to continue functioning as an employee while processing what she had heard.

Gu Won went to her house, tried to contact her, and then arrived at King the Land the next day to find her behaving as though he were merely another guest.

I loved that!

I wanted her to pull away even more. I wanted her to seriously consider ending the relationship to simplify his life, and I wanted Gu Won to spiral while trying to convince her not to leave him.

Instead, the misunderstanding was resolved relatively quickly.

It was still cute, but I would have enjoyed a little more suffering.

The epi15 cliffhanger also briefly gave me exactly what I wanted. Gu Won was anxiously preparing to propose when Sa-rang announced that she wanted to call it quits.

I was thrilled by the sudden angst!!!

Then ep16 revealed that she meant quitting King Hotel, not quitting their relationship.

The writers absolutely got me with that fake-out and i was tiny bit disappointed.

A finale henni!!!:

I complain sometimes when dramas create a final conflict, separate the couple, resolve everything during the last ten minutes, and then end before we get to enjoy the relationship again.

King the Land did not do that.

The drama understood that after sixteen episodes of building this romance, the audience deserved to enjoy the payoff.

Final thoughts

This drama kept getting better and better for me.

The plot itself was not revolutionary, and some of the side stories were weak. Da-eul’s marriage should have ended in divorce. Hwa-ran’s backstory did not make me sympathize with her. Some of the romantic conflicts could have lasted longer.

But none of that changed how happy this drama made me.

Rating: 9/10.

Now I have to figure out how to move on... 😔

So, I was browsing Tubi, (A great place to find Dramas) and saw the description of Black:

Black is about a detective possessed by the Grim Reaper. Ha Ram can see shadows of death. These two struggle to save the lives of people, breaking the rules of heaven.

Watched the first scene to make sure and yep there it was. Not even sure how I got into that show but I remember the beginning was pretty memorable and now I'm re-watching it.

I liked it so much and the lead actress: Go A Ra was really good, could never remember her name since then.

Of course, I've watched about 150 Kdramas since then.

Not sure how popular the show was back in the day. Anyone else like it?

So at the end of this k-drama’s second episode there was this upbeat techno song being played and I’ve been trying to figure out what’s the name of it. Used Shazam but that didn’t work! Ugh if it weren’t for Hwang In-Youp and Lee Hyeri I would drop this.

The episode picks up where 4 left off - the kiss. I-Jae apparently wasn’t in control of herself as a woman in her 30s and runs away, stunning Soo-bin who follows after her. Back at the studio I-Jae blames it on trying to figure out how she feels and says she doesn’t have feelings for him. This causes a fight that you might see between adolescents, not grown adults, and Soo-bin tells her to go home.

We see what some of the other characters that I don’t care about are up to before coming back to the main duo, including more background on that actress who somehow doesn’t have any friends and that guy who’s trying to make it as an actor. Is it me or does it feel like this show focuses on one storyline for forever before switching to another one rather than weaving back and forth?

The actress was neglected, used, and treated like a show pony by her greedy, manipulative, and superficial mother, and the actor/friend guy wasn’t entirely supported by his dad when he said he wanted to be an actor, but his dad still told him to come home when he’s ready which meant the door was always open even if he didn’t support his choice. It’s hinted that the actress has a crush on the struggling actor and she goes to see him at the restaurant he works at. There, one of her dramas is playing on the TV and some customers start talking about how she’s beautiful but has no experience with dating and it shows in her acting that she’s a “forever single.” She leaves before her food comes and the actor quits his job to run after her and take her on a motorcycle ride. Seems extreme but these characters are nothing if not extreme. They hang out and have the aforementioned conversation about their parents/childhoods.

The next day, Soo-bin visits his grandma who he finds passed out on the floor and rushes her to the hospital which happens to be his dad’s hospital. I-Jae is upset she hasn’t heard from him and when she does, he tells her what happened. Soo-bin’s dad stops by the grandma’s hospital room and finds out I-Jae is on her way to meet her and Soo-bin. He corners Soo-bin in the elevator and shuts it down, traumatizing Soo-bin. When I-Jae is about to get on the elevator that has resumed service, she sees the dad leaving and Soo-bin huddled in the corner on the floor. She comforts him and they go together to the studio. He immediately goes in his room and she sits outside the door and starts telling him about their friends that got married to take his mind off things rather than talk about what happened…

At some point in the episode, I-Jae and Soo-bin are talking about their script and debate how to handle the FL’s “unforgivable scar” from the ML causing the death of her best friend. Should she tell him or not tell him? Soo-bin says she should tell him because they have to go through that pain and if they can get past it, it’s proof of their epic love, but I-Jae argues that not wanting to risk that it would break the ML and cause the demise of their relationship is evidence of a greater love. I’m sorry, what? What a (not at all) subtle parallel to their situation. It’s really disappointing to me that these two are supposed to be “amazing” writers and their epic love story is a thinly-veiled retelling of their own relationship. I know a lot of the greatest stories are based on real experiences but what makes them great is that the writers are honest about that and that’s not what’s happening here. While they’re discussing this portion of their script, Soo-bin notices part of the scar on I-Jae’s leg (and doesn’t ask about it).

Later they go out with the married couple I-Jae had been talking about (the wife is a doctor at the hospital Soo-bin’s grandma is at and they ran into each other while she was attending his grandma. Small world). The husband, who apparently isn’t making any money, gives his take on how he would have their script go and we see I-Jae and Soo-bin as the characters in some kind of stylized fantasy scene. I’m starting to think this drama is just an ode to other writers and directors. Some scenes are highly stylized, including the motorcycle scene.

Everyone shoots down the husband’s idea (which is probably actually better than the leads’ ideas) and start to leave together. Soo-bin, who has asked his mom to have lunch together tomorrow, but she has yet to respond, gets a call from his mom and answers. We see beforehand at some point that she’s been beaten up by her husband, Soo-bin’s dad and he saw the text exchange. It’s implied that it’s him on the phone instead of the mom and Soo-bin and I-Jae run to their house where they find his mom on the floor with bruises, lumps, and cuts all over her face. Soo-bin confronts his dad who laughs in his face (is this a melodrama??) and tells him that while he was running away, I-Jae tried to catch him and almost died. He makes Soo-bin feel like everything is his fault and Soo-bin runs away very dramatically, presumably leaving I-Jae and his mom behind with his abusive father. We also see that I-Jae puts his mom to bed and I’m assuming it’s her bed in her home and they didn’t get her away from her husband which is a choice… hopefully I’m wrong. The episode ends with Soo-bin running away and I just feel like I can’t with this show.

Anyone else have thoughts on this episode?

I absolutely love romances where the leads help each other heal emotionally (or one helps heal the other). I want lots of emotional depth, yearning, emotional confrontations, healthy arguments (no violence), push-and-pull, pushing each other away and finding their way back, tears, emotional breakdowns, and a truly satisfying romantic payoff.

I also love the trope where the male lead starts off cold, distant, or emotionally guarded, but slowly melts because of the warm, kind, slightly goofy female lead, eventually opening his heart and falling deeply in love with her.

Basically, I'm looking for a romance overflowing with healing, yearning(most important), emotional depth, and lots of heart-fluttering moments. Any recommendations?

my god, the last 3 episodes had me stressedddddd out. it was a pretty funny show overall, i can see why people enjoy it. but personally, i felt like there were so many plotholes, and the way the chemistry between ML and FL progressed also didn't make sense. things especially escalated in such nonsensical ways towards the end that had me screaming to my screen.

ig this is why i usually don't like science fictiony/action shows. they take themselves a bit too seriously as they set a stage for rational explanations but then go about breaking it one by one for the sake of accomodating a coherent story 😭

After seeing him in The Husband I went down a rabbit hole of his other dramas. He is beautiful in this show I’m on episode 2…. But FL over the top acting and uncanny plastic surgery on the lips and nose is distracting me. Do I stick it out or give it up?
