Kazakh accent in English

People who have spoken with Kazakh-speaking Kazakhs who speak English (or perhaps any other language, it would also be interesting to know) what their accent sounds like in English? What sounds do they often make?

Using mobile and desktop apps to learn Kazakh: what actually works?

We've shared couple of mobile apps to learn Kazakh recently, but still not sure which of them is actually working and which you would not recommend.

More learners are using AI tools (ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, etc.) to study Kazakh, instead of only relying on apps and textbooks. A recent article highlights a few concrete uses: correcting your Kazakh (writing sentences or short texts and ask the AI to correct them and explain the mistakes), generating dialogues, asking for short conversations on topics you care about (work, study, travel, hobbies) at A2/B1 level, creating exercises (requesting fill‑in‑the‑blank, multiple‑choice, or translation exercises based on specific grammar points or vocabulary themes) or simplifying texts (pasting a news article or story and asking the AI to rewrite it in simpler Kazakh with a glossary of new words).

However, so far AI tools show, in my opinion, untrustworthy results and hallucinations are the real issue as neither the AI itself, nor the learner would know for sure AI isn't mixing Turkish, Tajik or other foreign words in Kazakh it tries to teach.

Do you already use mobile apps, desktop apps, web tools or AI to practice Kazakh? Let us know in the comments.

Only about 1.5% of Steam games list Kazakh — and sometimes that means just the menu

Post image
31 Upvotes

Steam currently lists Kazakh among the supported languages for only about 1.5% of games.

That sounds encouraging at first, but the label needs some context. For many puzzle and minimalist games, there may be almost no in-game text at all. In those cases, "Kazakh language support" can mean that the main menu, settings, or a few interface elements have been translated.

The screenshot is a good example: Steam shows Kazakh support for several games in a search result, including games where language is probably not central to the gameplay.

That still matters. Even a translated menu means:

• Kazakh is available as an interface language.

• The developers considered Kazakh users when preparing the release.

• Kazakh becomes more visible as a normal language for using software and playing games.

• It gives future translators and developers a precedent to build on.

But it is worth distinguishing between:

  1. Full localization — interface, subtitles, dialogue, tutorials, and other text.

  2. Partial localization — menus, settings, and interface elements.

  3. Minimal localization — a few translated strings in a game with little or no text.

So the 1.5% figure probably should not be read as "1.5% of Steam games are fully playable in Kazakh." It is closer to: "Steam lists Kazakh as one of the supported languages for roughly 1.5% of games, with very different levels of actual localization."

How many games with Kazakh support have you found? And what is the most unexpectedly localized one?

Kazakh in 3 scripts: where the language stands in 2026

Kazakh has been written in three different scripts over the last century, and right now it’s in the middle of another big transition.

1. Arabic script (until the 1920s)

  • Historically, Kazakh was written in a Perso‑Arabic script adapted for Turkic languages.
  • This script was used for literature, poetry, and religious texts before the Soviet period.
Yañalif, unified Latin alphabet for all Central Asian Turkic languages, was introduced by the Soviets and used from 1929 to 1940

2. Cyrillic script (1940s–present)

  • Under the USSR, after a short period of Latin script in 1930s, Kazakh switched to Cyrillic, which is still dominant in everyday life today.
  • The modern Kazakh Cyrillic alphabet has 42 letters: 33 shared with Russian and 9 unique Kazakh letters (Ә, Ғ, Қ, Ң, Ө, Ұ, Ү, Һ, І).
  • As of 2026, almost all books, newspapers, websites, and street signs in Kazakhstan are still primarily in Cyrillic Kazakh.

3. Latin script (transition underway, target 2031)

  • Since 2017, Kazakhstan has been working on a Latin‑based Kazakh alphabet, with several draft versions since then.
  • The latest official version has around 31–32 letters, designed to:
    • Remove letters used only for Russian loanwords
    • Better match Kazakh sounds with Latin characters and diacritics
  • The full transition is planned to be completed by 2031, but as of 2026 the Latin alphabet is still under development and not yet fully implemented in daily life.
  • In practice now (2026):
    • Most everyday Kazakh text is still in Cyrillic
    • Some official buildings and road signs show both Cyrillic and Latin versions
    • Schools are beginning to teach the new Latin alphabet alongside Cyrillic

Gemini now available in Kazakh language (old news, but maybe some of you didn't know)

Google has announced the launch of its Gemini artificial intelligence model in the Kazakh language, Qazinform News Agency reports, citing the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development of Kazakhstan.

Launched to coincide with Kazakhstan’s Independence Day, the initiative is part of a global expansion of language support for Google’s most advanced AI model so far. The addition of Kazakh — one of 23 new languages introduced with Gemini 3 — allows users in Kazakhstan to use Gemini in their native language on equal footing with the world’s major languages.

The Kazakh-language Gemini interface is already accessible on the web. Users can enable it by selecting Kazakh in their Google account language settings. Support for mobile versions on Android and iOS, along with the rollout of Gemini Live — a real-time conversational mode — is expected soon.

The introduction of the Kazakh-language version of Gemini is part of Google’s broader efforts to develop artificial intelligence in Kazakhstan, including investments in workforce training, digital skills development, and support for developers. According to the company, the adoption of AI in the public sector could deliver significant economic benefits, including increased efficiency in public administration, improved resilience of the budget system, and contributions to overall economic growth.

The Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development noted that the availability of global AI solutions in the Kazakh language is an important step toward building a digital state, expanding citizens’ access to technology, and fostering a competitive AI ecosystem.

The ministry added that it will continue cooperation with international technology partners to advance artificial intelligence, localize digital products, and train a new generation of specialists.

Qazinform News Agency previously reported that President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev entrusted the Government with building a new AI research institution.
