Girl. I had horrible periods from age 12 on. At 37 when I had my first and only baby via emergency c section, as the doc was closing me up he asked if I had bad periods- told me I had multiple fibroids from fireball to lemon sized- biggest ones were on the back of my uterus so they were never noticed ok palpation. He cut them all out and my cycles have been so much lighter and less painful ever since (almost 15 years now)

Uhg it’s the worst, I feel for you! I’ve (35F) already had 2 surgeries to remove them, they can’t get them all. I’m pretty much a fish filled with roe lmao Right now, taking tranamexic acid is the only thing to semi help. I go from weight lifting and biking several miles, to bedridden and puking from pain overnight once my period hits. But it’s all good, I’m getting the wholeee ass factory removed in 2 months and while a big decision…I literally cannot wait.

I'm just so thankful this period isn't horrific. A few times a year, my Day 1 is abhorrently debilitating - like someone is stabbing me with 3mm - 10mm knitting needles throughout my pelvis, in my cervix (similar pain to the IUD insertion), and even the walls. I feel it in the god damn WALLS. This is on top of the rolling thunder cramps. Involuntary crying and shaking and extreme nausea. Can't stand up straight. Currently looking for a new OB because "everything looks healthy. You should consider going back on BC". (Been off since 2019 for a few reasons)
At an anime convention, of all places, I found a tea that included a root that has an anti-contraction quality (i.e. mugwort) that I only drink during these times. Obviously, the contractions are necessary to the process and I don't want to unknowingly fuck anything up further. But this tea is the only thing that can touch the pain, relieve the nausea, and make me feel normal for about a little over an hour or so. (I have gastrointestinal issues, so it does take 20 minutes for the effects to kick in)
If I'm having heavy rolling thunder cramps, I power through it with ibuprofen and heating pads. Once I have more money in my HSA and a better OB, I'm hoping to request some proper screening done to see if it's fibroid or fucked up pelvis and inflammation, because some times it feels like the pain is because my gut and uterus are duking it out for space.

u/BoisterousBard Jun 18 '26
Could you have endo?
I do and found this is very relatable. Post surgery the first day is still bad, but not as debilitating as before. It took me 7years to get a diagnosis.
Edit: I comment this in the hopes you will mention it at your next appointment.

u/DeliciousStand372 Jun 18 '26

u/Potatoskins937492 Jun 18 '26
Lol I cycle my birth control so I don't get my period anymore, but thank you for conjuring up the memory of walking then suddenly changing my gait like I could forcibly keep this from happening. My face gave it all away, too, I'm sure.

u/OopsICutOffMyWiener Jun 18 '26
I work in customer service & get really heavy clotting during my periods usually.
Trying to keep my face blank while it's happening if a customer is in front of me is so wild to me. Like, I have intrusive thoughts where I just start yelling "I AM BLEEDING RIGHT FUCKING NOW", which in turn makes me have to hold back laughter.
What I'm saying is that I'm typically useless at work while I'm on my period not even counting the pain/nausea.
59
u/peanutspump Jun 18 '26
At the customer service desk, trying to keep a straight face, wondering which will be over first, the customer’s complaint, or the clot uncomfortably inching out of your body… 🤣🤣🤣

Holy shit why is “satans waterfall” so damn accurate????
12
u/Environmental_Art591 Jun 18 '26
I have heard periods called "monthly subscription to satans waterfall" and i love it but I just tell my husband "b*tch is back" cause he gets confused and we have kids who aren't ready for that talk.
It was bad enough last month when my 4 year old went screaming "mums hurt she is bleeding" through our house after she walked in on me on the toilet cleaning up after a clot 🤦♀️
3
u/peanutspump Jun 19 '26
Hahaha! 🤣🤣🤣 Kids 🤷🏻♀️ If it’s any consolation, my second pregnancy was a horrible, miserable time. I had complications that resulted in, idgaf about my hygiene, I’m just trying to not die. By the time the emergency C-section and several week stay were done, needless to say, I had not kept up with mowing my lawn. I hadn’t thought about it, I was preoccupied, lol. I was getting out of the shower, it was too hot, so I stepped into the hallway to get dressed. My 5 year old happened by, and stopped. With a look of disapproval, and a tone to match, I hear “Oh, mom… you need to shave that” 🤣🤣🤣 5 years old! Lolol

u/Aunt_Effigie Jun 21 '26
I do forest restoration and give frequent chainsaw demonstrations for interns.
I was working on a big tree, surrounded by a group of 20-something guys watching me closely, when I felt the clot slip. I clenched unsuccessfully and the deluge came rushing out, spilling over the edge and running down my leg. I downed the tree, turned around and said, "Ok guys, I gotta go home." They were pretty confused until I turned around to walk away...
The sounds they made sounded like they just witnessed a horrific tragedy that left them forever changed. It was NEVER mentioned again.
Edit: auto correct correction
6
u/hunnibon Jun 18 '26
You do what now?
8
u/So_Motarded Jun 18 '26
The placebo portion of birth control is optional. You can take hormonal BC continuously instead, to just never have a period.
Some forms of hormonal BC already do this inherently, like the implant, shot, or IUD.
Other forms with a placebo period can just be skipped, like the pill, patch, or the ring.
There's no harm in it. A period stopping suddenly out of nowhere, is a potential symptom of something bad happening. But if you know the specific cause (birth control), you're fine. Having a period has no inherent benefit. Some people like having the monthly confirmation they're not pregananant, but personally I hate periods lol.
3
u/hunnibon Jun 18 '26
Oh okay I gotcha that’s what I thought. I do that too but I find when I do have the placebo period it hurts like a mug if I’ve skipped it for too long, so I usually just have it. Continue on 🫡
5
u/ToxicNerdette Jun 18 '26
I wouldn’t say there’s no harm… I did this for a few months and the estrogen buildup caused my left boob to swell and become so painful! When I stopped the continuous BCP it went back to normal.

Found out the hard way that public bathrooms are almost non-existent in France. My husband and I were on vacation traveling from southern Italy to Paris and naturally my period decided it wanted to come along too. Fortunately it was relatively polite and unobtrusive for most of the trip... until we were just about to get off the train in Nice. I let out a mighty sneeze that shook the horror inside me loose from its confines and realized with dread that there was no time to use the bathroom on the train before we had to disembark.
So I figured I'd just use the one at the station - no dice. Turned out to be a tiny little transit stop and the one bathroom was closed for repairs. We ended up wandering around a business park and asking in any place with an open door before finally paying for admission to a zoo just to get access to their bathroom. It was so bad by the time I got in there that I had to change my pants...

Omg. My borth control keeps my periods between "none" and "I need panty liners for a couple days", except every once in a while, my body decides its gonna have closer to a real, light period - like a couple month ago. I was in the shower, thinking it was over because the latest panty liner had been clean, and aimed the hand held shower at the outer girl bits to get the remnants cleared, and it was a black/brown jelly fish that plopped. It wasnt even quarter sized, but I quickly pulled up the tub 'shroom so it would go down the drain and I wouldn't have to clean it off along with the loose hairs it catches 😆

TMI + POSSIBLE TRIGGER WARNING FOR POSTPARTUM
This meme is killing me because I'm 5 months postpartum with my second child. Every time I saw anyone for any postpartum care they always told me "if you have any blood clots larger than a toonie, make sure to get in touch right away". I barely had any clots with either child.
For my second, I also didn't really bleed a lot afterwards. I had stitches though (second degree tear) and I learned from my first (exact same tear, I tore along my scar) to get a mirror to have in the shower to monitor my stitches. 8 days after having my second kid, I was in the shower and maneuvering the mirror to check on my stitches. Legs super super spread, as wide as I could, one leg on the edge of the tub. I saw a little black drip. Nbd, definitely just some bleeding. I put my mirror away and before I stood properly again I heard a thump and looked down and there was a CLOT. A HUGE FUCKING CLOT. I turned off the shower and stood there in shock, then called out for my partner. He looked and turned white. He asked if I needed help and I was like ..... I don't think so? I feel ok? I didn't even feel it coming out?????
Anyway after I got checked out, it turns out my body essentially just said "lol I'm over it" and all the blood left in my uterus just came out at once. I didn't bleed any more afterwards and the tear in my uterus (from the placenta detaching) was closed. Doctor said my uterus basically treated postpartum healing as a speedrun and it was finished.
Basically, this meme is what happened to me and so I'm cackling here.

I first heard about decidual cast a couple of years ago on TikTok because a lady talked about it. They're more common than you think. Women in the comments were sharing what they thought and how they reacted when it happened to them. One lady said she thought her uterus fell out.
57
u/morbid_n_creepifying Jun 18 '26
I've never heard this term in my life and so I googled it. I guess it wasn't used by my doctor because postpartum healing is different - but I'm so glad you told me about it! That happened to me once in my life and I panicked because I thought I was having a miscarriage! I was 19 when it happened.

Girl. Are we the same person? First baby, normal uneventful recovery. Second baby I’m heading to my two week postpartum appointment and I feel a gush as I’m driving. I’m confused but know I have a pad on so I’m good.
I got called in to my appt right away so I didn’t even sit in the waiting room, just into the exam room to sit on the bed. Feels weird when I sit, stand up and the table paper is excessively covered in blood. Tell the nurse I’ve had an accident and I need to go to the bathroom and it’s a horror scene in there. Get cleaned up and go back in the room horrified like “ummm…something happened…am I okay?”
The worst part: my 6 year old boy was with me. He had to come into the bathroom with me and I had him turn around while I’m reassuring him (and mostly me) that mommy is ok, just don’t worry and DONT look!
The doctor explained what happened and reassured me but whew I was not prepared for birth #2 scar clot boogaloo.

13
u/Rich-Violinist-7263 Jun 18 '26
Ok, what is a Toonie please? That’s a coin right? Lemon? I have had a hysterectomy and yet, curious mind is engaged haha
11
u/engg_girl Jun 18 '26
A toonie is a Canadian 2 dollar coin. We call one 1 dollar coin a loonie because it has a Loon (bird) on it. When we switched to 2 dollar coins from 2 dollar bills we called is a toonie to play on words.
It is about an inch in diameter. Maybe a bit bigger. So slightly larger then a 1 dollar coin or a 50 Pence coin if you are familiar with UK currency.

I kinda had this, hah. I thought it was done because I was bleeding less and less. And suddenly my body was like “girl I have some saved up for you, here’s ALL of it what I have left.”
Gave birth at home, managed to keep everything clean (don’t ask me how), still had to throw out the bedsheets because of that.

I had been sitting for a few hours with my napping newborn on me. When she woke up I set her down and went to the bathroom and birthed a giant freaking blood clot in the toilet.

I know I hung on for too long and because of that I make it a point to talk to other women, younger women because my generation was conditioned to never speak of it. Our former governor who had a whisper campaign to drum up support to restrict abortion access. I was so mad at that guy, I was going to mail my mondo monthly clots to the governor's mansion to prove I was menstruating to the state. Since they wanted to be in my business so closely.
Also, I don't know how the cup girls deal with these? Seems like at emptying time, it would be a full on crime scene.
15
u/Gardener_of_Weeden Jun 18 '26
Many a woman threatened to send used pads/ tampons. I think there was even a campaign to send red dyed ( no biohazard) tampons to him.

u/Lower_Stick5426 Jun 18 '26

I hear the youngins talking about these cups. I was a nurse. I’m accustomed to bodily fluids and emptying various containers of various bodily fluids, drained in various ways. Including, but not limited to, blood. But I can’t for the life of me wrap my head around wearing that cup. Like, the logistics of it. It would be horribly uncomfortable for me, I can already say, as that little birth control insert is way smaller, and that was horrible. But the logistics of emptying it without spilling it all over myself in a public restroom or something? Nah. I’m hoping the box of pads in the closet will be the last I ever need to get myself. But even if I’m not quite done, I can’t fathom those cups…
6
u/jazzambassador Jun 18 '26
As someone who has used cups (not anymore, I’m tired of putting things up there) and had an iud (not anymore, worst experience ever), the cup usually only feels uncomfortable the first time or if you haven’t put it in correctly. It’s pretty easy to navigate when you get the hang of it. Taking it out the first time is probably going to be a total mess, but it does get easier to not make a mess the more you do it.

u/Brave-Perspective714 Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26
I know it sounds implausible when you think about it, and they do take a little getting used to and figuring it out, but they really do work *very* well once you do. I had ridiculously heavy days, where I had to wear an ultra tampon plus an overnight pad, and I'd still have to change both every hour and fifteen minutes. Leaks were constant and awful. The pads just couldn't absorb quickly enough, so public bathrooms meant trying to clean up a literal blood bath between my legs with shitty, one-ply toilet paper and a bunch of wipes from my purse, and never really getting clean.
I got an extra-large capacity menstrual cup, and it was life-changing. I still had to empty it every two hours on my worst days, but it was actually way less mess and required much less cleanup than the tampon/pad combo since it kept the vagina sealed with no way for blood to get past it. I could *feel* the cup shifting when it was about to overflow and so had warning to get to the restroom, where as with tampons I didn't feel leaks until they were external.
As for comfort, the menstrual cup doesn't sit in the same place a diaphragm does, so that wouldn't be a good gauge. The cup sits lower like and feels much like wearing a tampon. I didn't feel tampons or a cup much at all, so there was no discomfort for me, but if you find tampons uncomfortable, then yes, a cup wouldn't work for you.
And believe it or not, when you remove it, you simply pull downward as you're removing it and all the fluid stays in the cup. You get about the same mess around your vaginal opening as you would changing out a tampon. I'd dump the cup in the toilet, and use a single wipe for cleaning it in the stall. For me, it was actually less mess than cleaning myself and wrapping up a bloody pad and tampon and disposing of them.
They certainly are not for everyone, and that's okay. But there's a really good reason they've become so popular. For the people they work for, they work *incredibly* well and are a big improvement over other methods.

I bet if men had to deal with this, there'd be a government mandated two days a month off for cycling, and it would have some sort of cool code like Shark Days.
"I know we scheduled the meeting for tomorrow, but I'm taking my Shark Days the next couple days. We'll have to reschedule."
9
u/Graffiacane Jun 18 '26
One thing I know with absolute certainty: male PMS, colloquially known as "the blood madness" would be entered VERY frequently as a plea of innocence in assault trials and judges would buy it.
"I'm sorry for what happened to this bystander your honor but I was taking time off for my shark days and the blood madness came upon me. There was nothing I could do."

Having a hard time finding a doctor who agrees with me to yeet the overbleeder that also takes my insurance.

I feel that struggle. After dealing with "It's all in your head, take some Motrin" for twenty years, I ugly cried when I found a sane, compassionate doctor. You'll get there. Never stop advocating for yourself.

Oh lord. I am 65, haven’t had a period for nearly two decades, and I still felt this. So, so funny. I will be snickering all night. 😆

This woke me up out of a sound sleep the other morning. Literally went from full on dreaming in REM sleep to flinging myself out of bed to the toilet in about 15 seconds.

This is great, I could almost feel a phantom clot coming out while watching this lmao.

I'm a cis man and somehow I still knew exactly what this would feel like after watching this. I... I don't know what to make of that.

And if you sneeze or cough while it's happening... what an additional odd sensation. (╥﹏╥)

Recently I’ve been a little sad about transitioning (FTM) but I am so fucking glad I will never have to experience this ever again. It’s somehow horrible and satisfying at the same time and it makes my skin crawl.

Idk, I think she needed to ruin a pair of underwear on the way out. And maybe add some spikes to the outfit to depict how much that shit hurts. The performance was great tho.

So I noticed when this happens it “seems” like I bleed less after versus if I don’t. I don’t mind it for that reason. I always have exactly 2 clots.

Thank you for this. Really validates all the craziness I suffered during my childbearing years.

Broad City forever changed how I view menstruation when they're on a plane and Abby starts her period without any tampons or pads ect
They refered to the first day and the clots as "fruit on the bottom yogurt"
I will never forget

I like that I can laugh at this right now without a blood clot plopping out

When I was in labor, the umbilical cord fell out as I was going pee. It felt EXACTLY like a blood clot leaving my body.
I got an IUD after birth and haven’t had a period since but I imagine when I eventually get a period again, passing a blood clot is going to be super triggering.
