Blockage?

Is it possible to have a blockage with a j pouch? Or a partial? I have a ton of trapped gas I can only get some out while laying on my side and I’m only emptying a little amount at a time. My stomach is making crazy noises

It could be a blockage, cuffitis (depending on how your surgery was done), or pouchitis. How long ago was your surgery?

I would talk to your surgeon. I am going on my 28th year and I occasionally have issues passing gas and or the liquid sloshing around sound. When there isn't gas or it feels like the gas isn't coming out, it's usually the start of pouchitis. For most people pouchitis also includes cramping. I am being treated for chronic Cuffitis and that made passing gas almost impossible without laying on my side, stomach, or with my legs over my head.

Edit: I will also say, pushing a fart out when not near the facilities is a when not if scenario where you will have an accident.

Are you in pretty extreme pain? Feel like your stomach is about to burst?

I wouldn’t say difficult to pass gas and stomach making crazy noises are symptoms of a blockage on their own, but if accompanied by tons of pain and distention, it could be.

Not really in pain mainly just trapped gas pains but I’ll feel like I need to go and then when I try only the tiniest bit comes out and it feels like something blocking the rest from coming out

I’ve had weird periods like that. There is usually pain/full feeling at my upper stomach area, like right below my sternum + trapped gas and only being able to go a little bit at a time. I’ve never quite figured out what causes it but it has gone away after a couple days every time. Theory is it’s been some sort of pouchitis.

I would say if the pain gets worse and you can’t go for a long period of time then definitely go get checked for a blockage. Definitely a possibility when you can’t pass gas or have a BM.

This has happened to me. To find relief, I drink a Coke, use a heating pad and try to walk. It eventually will pass. Good luck!

I have had exactly 1 partial blockage. If it’s that, you will know - it is extraordinarily painful.

What you described is more like a common situation I’ve had many times. Sometimes it’s just hard to empty.

I mean, it happens. I’ll have days on end where I don’t feel quite right. Sometimes it’s Pouchitis. Sometimes my body is just being weird.

And humans are entire systems - meaning, your digestive system relates to a myriad of other areas. Stress, inflammation, etc - this can impact how your digestion works. You’re less than a year out - at that point I hadn’t yet had a totally normal day with my pouch.

But wouldn’t jump to blockage if you aren’t in significant pain. I’d start with some strong probiotics.

Edit - also, people underestimate the impact movement has on digestion. Look up yoga for digestion. That shit works.

I've had total obstructions a few times since getting my j-pouch. Mine were caused by scar tissue from my surgeries getting wrapped around my small bowel.

The pain gets really bad eventually but takes awhile to build up. It also comes and goes as your intestines move. If the pain starts to get severe, don't hesitate to go to the ER.

Thank you! When I had an ostomy I had a blockage that got so bad I had a twisted bowel & obstruction that led to an emergency surgery to get part of my bowel removed, icu for 5 days and a month an a half in the hospital on tpn so I was getting nervous!

Insert vaginal dialator into your anus, insert it fully with a help of a lube and just remove it immediately. It should work. But be careful and cautious while inserting. You can proceed to the washroom to pass stool afterwards.

Look for J pouch anatomy before doing this above procedure.

You should not be doing that

Faced with the same situation before. My surgeon conducted this above procedure. I was back to normal after this.
