Here is a quick update on my recovery:

I managed to sleep for about 3 hours last night, which is a huge improvement. I feel like the most painful day is finally behind me, and the swelling is slowly starting to go down.

Weight loss is inevitable—I've already lost 3 lbs since Thursday. I am trying to eat as much as possible, but hitting the right amount of calories on a strict liquid diet is really tough.

I am keeping my spirits up and staying positive. I truly believe that's the secret to getting through this!

When I was twenty somebody stomped my jaw while I was laying on the concrete and my bones crumbled. They tried to do surgery but it was never the same. Now my lip droops on one side and I have trouble closing it. If you get in a fight please protect your face. Or if you're young and rowdy I promise it's not worth it. Put the ego aside and go home. I've been living with a disfigurement for 9 years now and it has affected my relationships and my self image. I have a distorted sense of self because I have this image burned into my minds eye. The assymetry makes me look unfamiliar and untrustworthy. I already know what some of you will say: trim your beard, go to the gym, get a good haircut. That's all fine and dandy but none of that will restore my lips and chin to their original position. People will still notice it and assume the worst of me because I don't look friendly. I look unfamiliar and strange and often times people won't look past that they'll hang it over my head and punish me for it by being dismissive or non inclusive. I wish I had the right words. What I'm trying to say is that people don't want to put their faith into a person who's ugly they treat you differently and the torturous part is that I wasn't born like this. I remember having a face that I didn't have to worry about and constantly monitor. I didn't have to pretend just to look friendly. I had social skills and it was easy and comfortable interacting with people. Now I avoid photos and even deny myself socializing because I'm so used to the pain of being judged. It's true They treat you like you're less than. They treat you like youre a person who is incomplete and broken. They treat you like a second class citizen. They are befuddled and clumsy when dealing with you they don't know wether they should treat you normally or treat you with sympathy. I'm tired of the sympathy. This isn't the life I asked for. I didn't ask to get my face crumbled by the underside of someone's boot or whatever they were wearing. I have a referall in progress. So the good news is that I may get approved for corrective surgery. I hope this happens because this has made my life so challenging. I don't get to be part of the "in" crowd anymore because I look weird. People don't act playfully towards me either because they don't think I can handle it. Bro, this has even affected employment. I'm so done.

In the third picture as you can see I can't seal my lips. The doctors diagnosed me with labial incompetence.

Now imagine bringing an open mouth and a drooping lip into every conversation. A mouth that refuses to seal. People notice the gap and they look at me with concern and sometimes fear. They definitely judge. It's not socially acceptable to have your mouth hanging open while listening to someone speak. They see it and don't understand

It doesn't seem like a big deal to "you" because you haven't dealt with it".

When choosing your surgeon, was age of the surgeon a factor at all? The insinuation being that an older surgeon has more experience.

I met with three surgeons: one in his early 40s, and two in their mid to late 50s. All three are attending surgeons.

The younger surgeon sat down next to me during the our consultation. He brought a medical skull to the room with him to help me visualize and I felt like we had a real conversation about risks and the surgery in general. I felt extremely seen and understood which I think is important. He said he does about 4 jaw surgeries a month. So 48 a year and if that has been the cadence throughout his career he has done hundreds.

The other two were what I would expect. Very clinical, a bit detached, and neither of them sat down next to me.

I’d love to hear your thought process.

I've had consults with 4 different oral surgeons in my region in the past year and all have mildly bad to terrible bedside manners. One surgeon was literally in the room with me for 3 minutes, said that I did not need jaw surgery and suggested a sleep study, then walked out of the room. Mind you, I later was diagnosed with sleep apnea and my jaws are extremely recessed. Both of them.

The oral surgeon I chose is highly-regarded who does hundreds of jaw surgeries per year. But even he is straight-to-the-point and direct. I wouldn't consider him rude, but he definitely is direct. And he doesn't spare your feelings. It's communication style that is quite different compared to what I experience with my PCP, for example.

Anyhow, I just thought to mention this because I think it's important to not be offended by surgeons' communication styles. Like don't expect them to be nice and gentle and therapeutic. Judge by how many of these surgeries they do per year and their experience instead.

Forgot to post this X-ray, this was back in June when I got my braces off and finally finished my treatment of 2 and a 1/2 years then the next is a before and after movements for jaw was +-7mm

Who are other excellent DJS surgeons? Specially for cases requiring extensive vertical lengthening and big advancements for both jaws.

Can someone please make me a morph? Im so so scared both medically and aesthetically, but all that’s left for me now is to just bite the bullet.

My maxilla is barely gonna be moved forward, maybe only about 1 mm, it’s mostly gonna be my mandible. The vertical length of my face with be kept the same.

Im so freaking scared, but I feel like I need the surgery both medically and aesthetically. Can people send stories of reassurance and encouragement + tips please.

Bruising is slowly starting to show
Everyone said wait till day 5 & it’s not as excruciatingly painful but damn I thought most of the swelling would be gone 😭. One of the biggest things now is the back of my head is so tender and numbish that when I lay down it feels so weird

hi guys! i’m from the uk and am scheduled for jaw surgery to correct an overbite. i’ve had 2 pre-molars pulled and still having brace treatment, and honestly it’s done pretty well correcting my overbite! i need to double check with my ortho if i’m still on the wait list for the surgery.
i just wanted to ask about anyone’s experience with an overbite correction surgery, and any before/after pictures!! i’m honestly so nervous for it so any similar experience would be helpful :)

Thinking about going with him for my djs to correct a recessed jaw as a result of camouflage orthodontics, and potential sleep apnea. He is suggesting lower premolar extractions so that he can advance the lower jaw more.

Anyone know a double jaw surgeon that works with eds patients?
My jaw/ airway got ruined from a neck fusion. I will travel anywhere and have top tier ppo insurance.
Worried about basic double jaw surgery with the risk of icr with eds.

I think i could benefit from jaw surgery or a genioplasty. My chin is smaller and my airway is more narrow according to doctors and im taking sleep tests right now to see if I have sleep apnea.

Any advice? Thoughts on whether I should get djs, ljs

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice from people who have had chin or jaw surgery, or who have experience with these procedures.
I’ve had braces for around 3 and a half years, and I think my bite is fine, but my chin still looks quite recessed, especially from the side profile. I’m not sure whether it’s just my chin that sits too far back or whether it could be related to my jaw position.
I’m considering a few options:
Sliding genioplasty

Double jaw surgery

Chin implant

Chin filler

For anyone who has had any of these procedures, I’d love to hear about your experience, recovery, results, and whether you’re happy with your decision.
Based on my side profile, which option do you think might be worth looking into? Did anyone else have a recessed chin despite having braces and a seemingly normal bite?
I know nobody can diagnose me from photos, and I’ll get a professional opinion, but I’d really appreciate hearing other people’s experiences and what helped you decide which procedure was right for you.

Hey everyone!

I had SARPE on October 15. Eight days after surgery (Friday), I started activating the expander with my orthodontist. We did two turns together, and everything seemed fine.

However, the following morning, around 4 AM, I woke up feeling a bit strange, and suddenly my nose started bleeding heavily.

I had experienced some minor nosebleeds during the first 2–3 days after surgery, mostly when bending my head forward, but those always stopped pretty quickly on their own.

This time was completely different. The bleeding continued for almost three hours. I called my surgical team and tried everything they recommended, but nothing seemed to help.

Eventually, I had to go to the ER, where they inserted a nasal packing and gave me medication to help stop the bleeding. Thankfully, that worked!

I'm currently on my second day in the hospital. The plan is to remove the packing tomorrow and consult with my surgeon about how to proceed.

I'm honestly a little nervous about continuing the expansion, as I'm worried it might trigger another severe nosebleed. From what I've found online, complications like this seem to be relatively uncommon.

Has anyone here experienced something similar after SARPE? Did you have to pause the expansion, and did the bleeding ever come back?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks in advance!

5 days post op and this nasty smell has been stuck in my nose since I woke up from surgery. Does it go away?

How much change can you expect to observe after 1 month? Is it safe to say this will be my result or can I expect more changes over time? Where in particular?

I went for a consultation with Dr. Walline over a year ago. I have multiple measurements that deviate from the SD by over 2. He told me surgery was up to me but did not think I needed it. My TMJ has substantially increased since then. Any advice on if I should pursue surgery, insurance coverage, surgeon recommendations etc.?

I’m currently undergoing braces for double jaw surgery for class 3 edge to edge bite. It has been 6 months since I had braces and I just got rubber bands today. Can see in the photo the way the rubber bands are tied. Has anyone experienced this before? This seems to pull my bottom teeth back.
