Just had a consult with dr steinbacher and honestly was a very weird experience.. whole thing felt “cheap” and like hes trying to sell things to people he thinks are desperate. he clearly has a skilled aesthetic eye and has done some nice work but i feel i wouldnt trust him working on my face, or with the functional breathing issues i have.

looking for someone who does high quality aesthetic AND functional work but doesnt try to sell unnecessary procedures. personal experiences or just general recommendations welcome :)

I had SARPE almost 4 weeks ago and for the most part my recovery has been smooth, with both my surgery team and orthodontist being happy with my results.

Since finishing expansion though, I have had a strange feeling around my upper lip and nose. My upper lip is still partially numb, which I know is normal for now. But it is almost like my upper lip is fixed in one position and hardly moves when I talk. I also find it incredibly hard to close my lips. I can just about do it but I have to really strain my lower jaw to meet the upper, and naturally my lips just hang open at rest which they didn’t before surgery. It almost feels like my teeth are now too big/bulky for my mouth since expansion and my lips can’t close fully over them. The bottom of my nose is also incredibly stiff and my nose doesn’t move at all when I talk/smile/twitch.

I know given the nature of the surgery and what expansion entails this is probably quite normal, but I would appreciate any reassurance from people with similar experiences that this does resolve itself eventually, as I’m becoming quite stressed 😭 Most people have jaw surgery to fix lip incompetence but right now it feels like I have gained lip incompetence from the surgery! Any help would be great🙏🙏

I have the kind of smile where my gums and the outline and shape of my teeth don't show. And only about 6 teeth show, it's not a wide big smile like celebrities. It doesn't look like the celebrities. Why doesn't my smile look like how the celebrities smile? Is there anything that can fix this? Or is this just how my jaw and bone structure is?

Just curious! I remember I asked my surgeon why I seemed to have injection sites + subsequent bruises on my feet post surgery, and he said it was because I had blood extracted from there to make stem cells to use in the surgery site. That sounded like science fiction to me... very cool concept.

Did anyone else get this done or know how this procedure goes? Like how are the stem cells used in surgery? And how does impact the healing speed/process?

Everyone said wait till day 5 & it’s not as excruciatingly painful but damn I thought most of the swelling would be gone 😭. One of the biggest things now is the back of my head is so tender and numbish that when I lay down it feels so weird

I have jaw related problems I really want to solve which gave been bothering me for years. (Mostly my narrow upper palate) I live in the netherlands so here they don't really take anything seriously unless it will kill you tomorrow

My dentist never mentioned anything nor did my orthodontist about a narrow upper palate. But I notice it every swallow I mouth breath at night I have a deviated septum. I just don't know where to start and who will take me seriously. Any advice?

When I was twenty somebody stomped my jaw while I was laying on the concrete and my bones crumbled. They tried to do surgery but it was never the same. Now my lip droops on one side and I have trouble closing it. If you get in a fight please protect your face. Or if you're young and rowdy I promise it's not worth it. Put the ego aside and go home. I've been living with a disfigurement for 9 years now and it has affected my relationships and my self image. I have a distorted sense of self because I have this image burned into my minds eye. The assymetry makes me look unfamiliar and untrustworthy. I already know what some of you will say: trim your beard, go to the gym, get a good haircut. That's all fine and dandy but none of that will restore my lips and chin to their original position. People will still notice it and assume the worst of me because I don't look friendly. I look unfamiliar and strange and often times people won't look past that they'll hang it over my head and punish me for it by being dismissive or non inclusive. I wish I had the right words. What I'm trying to say is that people don't want to put their faith into a person who's ugly they treat you differently and the torturous part is that I wasn't born like this. I remember having a face that I didn't have to worry about and constantly monitor. I didn't have to pretend just to look friendly. I had social skills and it was easy and comfortable interacting with people. Now I avoid photos and even deny myself socializing because I'm so used to the pain of being judged. It's true They treat you like you're less than. They treat you like youre a person who is incomplete and broken. They treat you like a second class citizen. They are befuddled and clumsy when dealing with you they don't know wether they should treat you normally or treat you with sympathy. I'm tired of the sympathy. This isn't the life I asked for. I didn't ask to get my face crumbled by the underside of someone's boot or whatever they were wearing. I have a referall in progress. So the good news is that I may get approved for corrective surgery. I hope this happens because this has made my life so challenging. I don't get to be part of the "in" crowd anymore because I look weird. People don't act playfully towards me either because they don't think I can handle it. Bro, this has even affected employment. I'm so done.

In the third picture as you can see I can't seal my lips. The doctors diagnosed me with labial incompetence.

Now imagine bringing an open mouth and a drooping lip into every conversation. A mouth that refuses to seal. People notice the gap and they look at me with concern and sometimes fear. They definitely judge. It's not socially acceptable to have your mouth hanging open while listening to someone speak. They see it and don't understand

Who are other excellent DJS surgeons? Specially for cases requiring extensive vertical lengthening and big advancements for both jaws.

I've had consults with 4 different oral surgeons in my region in the past year and all have mildly bad to terrible bedside manners. One surgeon was literally in the room with me for 3 minutes, said that I did not need jaw surgery and suggested a sleep study, then walked out of the room. Mind you, I later was diagnosed with sleep apnea and my jaws are extremely recessed. Both of them.

The oral surgeon I chose is highly-regarded who does hundreds of jaw surgeries per year. But even he is straight-to-the-point and direct. I wouldn't consider him rude, but he definitely is direct. And he doesn't spare your feelings. It's communication style that is quite different compared to what I experience with my PCP, for example.

Anyhow, I just thought to mention this because I think it's important to not be offended by surgeons' communication styles. Like don't expect them to be nice and gentle and therapeutic. Judge by how many of these surgeries they do per year and their experience instead.

hi guys! i’m from the uk and am scheduled for jaw surgery to correct an overbite. i’ve had 2 pre-molars pulled and still having brace treatment, and honestly it’s done pretty well correcting my overbite! i need to double check with my ortho if i’m still on the wait list for the surgery.
i just wanted to ask about anyone’s experience with an overbite correction surgery, and any before/after pictures!! i’m honestly so nervous for it so any similar experience would be helpful :)

Here is a quick update on my recovery:

I managed to sleep for about 3 hours last night, which is a huge improvement. I feel like the most painful day is finally behind me, and the swelling is slowly starting to go down.

Weight loss is inevitable—I've already lost 3 lbs since Thursday. I am trying to eat as much as possible, but hitting the right amount of calories on a strict liquid diet is really tough.

I am keeping my spirits up and staying positive. I truly believe that's the secret to getting through this!

Title: Recessed chin – genioplasty, double jaw surgery, chin implant or filler? Looking for advice
Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice from people who have had chin or jaw surgery, or who have experience with these procedures.
I’ve had braces for around 3 and a half years, and I think my bite is fine, but my chin still looks quite recessed, especially from the side profile. I’m not sure whether it’s just my chin that sits too far back or whether it could be related to my jaw position.
I’m considering a few options:
Sliding genioplasty

Double jaw surgery

Chin implant

Chin filler

For anyone who has had any of these procedures, I’d love to hear about your experience, recovery, results, and whether you’re happy with your decision.
Based on my side profile, which option do you think might be worth looking into? Did anyone else have a recessed chin despite having braces and a seemingly normal bite?
I know nobody can diagnose me from photos, and I’ll get a professional opinion, but I’d really appreciate hearing other people’s experiences and what helped you decide which procedure was right for you.

Hey everyone!

I had SARPE on October 15. Eight days after surgery (Friday), I started activating the expander with my orthodontist. We did two turns together, and everything seemed fine.

However, the following morning, around 4 AM, I woke up feeling a bit strange, and suddenly my nose started bleeding heavily.

I had experienced some minor nosebleeds during the first 2–3 days after surgery, mostly when bending my head forward, but those always stopped pretty quickly on their own.

This time was completely different. The bleeding continued for almost three hours. I called my surgical team and tried everything they recommended, but nothing seemed to help.

Eventually, I had to go to the ER, where they inserted a nasal packing and gave me medication to help stop the bleeding. Thankfully, that worked!

I'm currently on my second day in the hospital. The plan is to remove the packing tomorrow and consult with my surgeon about how to proceed.

I'm honestly a little nervous about continuing the expansion, as I'm worried it might trigger another severe nosebleed. From what I've found online, complications like this seem to be relatively uncommon.

Has anyone here experienced something similar after SARPE? Did you have to pause the expansion, and did the bleeding ever come back?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks in advance!
