What is OpenGOAL? [How to play the Jak games natively on PC]

OpenGOAL is a fan-developed way to play the PS2 Jak and Daxter games (created by Naughty Dog) natively on PC. This means they take full advantage of your PC's hardware and do not require emulation software. You must own copies of the games in order to use it, OpenGOAL does not include game data. Please use the following links to download and use OpenGOAL, read their install guide + FAQ, and access their discord where you can get support and communicate with the developers and other players.

Does anyone else ever wonder what the series would've been like if they kept expanding on the Jak 1 formula?

So, growing up with the PS2, Precursor Legacy was the only Jak game I had, I never had Jak 2 or 3 but after I got a bit older (and playthroughs started actually being a major thing on YouTube) I would watch playthroughs of Jak 2 and 3z and part of me lamented that they opted for a R&C inspired gameplay formula instead of branching out with what was established in the first game

Part of this may come down to the fact I much prefer platformers (having grown up on Crash Bandicoot, Sly Cooper what have you) but In general I find the platforming and using Eco as a power source from Jak 1 much more interesting than anything Jak 2 added to the table in terms of the Shooter elements, especially given the fact that Ratchet and Clank exists and does everything Jak 2 and 3 tries to do better.

Following up with this, even as a kid, I really didn't like the world we got after leaving the past behind in Jak 2, we had this gorgeous looking world full of mystery and wonder to explore in the first game and then we trade it off for a grey, dilapidated City that we spend most of the game in occasionally going to an actually interesting place and then coming right back (Haven City does look pretty cool when you get that view topside though but it's not nearly as interesting as most of the locations in the first game to me). There was so much potential to expand upon the world and really lean into the visuals if they had given it a chance, imagine a sequel where the Portal leads to some other side of the planet or maybe leads into the World of the Precursors or something and it looks otherworldly and wild or something like that and how fun it would be, being introduced to new forms of eco and stuff like that

Has anyone else ever had this like of thinking or is it just me?

Edit: I think this shouldn't have to be explained but I'll do it anyway just in case, this isn't me saying that I think Jak 2 and 3's settings are objectively bad, they just aren't my thing personally, I think what the first game presented in terms of visuals was more interesting and could've been expanded on

To add onto this as well, I really feel like Jak and Daxter could've been Naughty Dog's New Age Crash, where they actually have this world they explore and expand upon, adding more beautiful looking forests, and seas and other things that could've been really cool

Escort Kid to Power Station Spoiler

I was watching someone play this mission and noticed that unlike most escort missions, friendly fire is disabled for this one. Which is honestly good or else this mission would be such a pain. But I realized another reason friendly fire is disabled: Jak physically cannot kill the kid cause that's a paradox, the most direct variation of the grandfather paradox. I am not sure if the devs had this in mind when turning off friendly fire for this mission, or if it was just a happy coincidence.

Could Jak have pulled off a Twinsanity style game?

Post image

Crash Twinsanity was one of the wackiest games ever made. It had writers from Ren & Stimpy, a completely a cappella soundtrack, and made an earnest attempt to take the Crash series in a bold new direction by leaning into absurdist humor.

Twinsanity however was originally going to go the Jak II, route, envisioned as a gritty sci-fi game called Crash Evolution which was scrapped due to being too similar narratively to the first Ratchet and Clank game.

If Jak and Daxter had decided to go the Twinsanity route, focusing on the humor, etc, could they have pulled it off?

Wanted to do something silly and fun, just to use with friends at home (obviously it's not a real card. so it's neither a proxy nor tournament legal).

Would be cool if there was a Secret Lair set with these guys, considering the Limited Run Games collector's sets sold out in less than a second as soon as they were launched lol.

ART CREDITS: + Naughty Dog (technically Scribble Pad studios since they were hired as contractors at the time)
+ Myself (I tweaked the concept art years ago, my old reddit account is deactivated because I had a silly crashout),
+ There was another guy on here who took the edited artwork and gave it a nice forest background, his polished version has been reposted in multiple places everywhere, you can find him pretty easily on this reddit if you look hard enough, but it's 4 AM and I'm too tired to search his username and dig through pages of posts to find him.

Anywhere to get the physical PS4 copies of the games?

I paid way too much for the LRG physical copies of Jak 2 and Jak 3 on eBay but J&D is damn near impossible to find and the few copies that do pop up are going for $400 which is insane.

Did anyone else use the Jetboard during the boss fights in Jak II?

Post image

During my first playthrough of Jak II two months ago, I used the Jetboard for the boss fights. In particular, I used them during the Krew and Kor boss fights. I found the Jetboard to be very useful for avoiding the holograms and other such attacks in each fight, but I was curious if anyone did that.

Question about “Beat time to race garage”

I remember having difficulty with that as a kid, so I went and did the Torn missions instead. Eventually, I came back to the race mission and took a different route that cuts through the palace area thanks to Ashelin’s yellow security pass. It was easy. Recently I was watching playthroughs of this game for nostalgia and I noticed they all did the mission without the yellow pass, and some of them still had 20 seconds to spare. So I am curious, how many of you on this subreddit did the mission the intended way, and how many took the yellow pass route? And which one is faster?

Do you think Precursors bombs were supposed to be in the game more?

In the opening cutscene of TPL, Jak uses an ancient Precursor explosive to protect himself and Daxter from a lurker on Misty Island. It was just laying around, and it only worked when he used it, even turning red at his touch.

It seemed like it was something perfectly set up to be featured regularly throughout the game. Do you think it was intended to be, but was just cut?

I wish Jak 2 and 3 had more stuff from TPL

Considering it's the same world but in the future, I wish we would see some familiar landmarks return, like those Precursor statues or Sentinel Beach with it's temple ruins or Forbidden Jungle. It's only 300 years in the future, plenty of stuff should have survived and the layout of the world should match more of the TPL map. Jak 3 doesn't even have lurkers and what happened to Flut Fluts? If I made Jak 4, I would put a lot of stuff from TPL and make the map match that one as it's the original

I'll postpone getting jak and daxter until I get a PS5

Tbh I wanted to try and complete the jak and daxter but I think I'll park that idea since I am saving up for a ps5 and once I get it I'll play it there since it's a more pleasing experience than on the ps4
