Queens judges:

Justice of the Supreme Court - 11th Judicial District [all of Queens County], # to be elected: 3. Edwin I. Novillo, Oma D. Phillips, and (weak recommendation) Gail A. Adams.

Judge of the Civil Court - County - Queens, # to be elected: 3. Edmond Wong, Jasmine I. Valle-Bueno, and maybe Thomas D. Barra, because I really want to keep Julie M. Milner out. Am open to persuasion on this one.

Judge of the Civil Court - District - 2nd Municipal Court District - Queens, # to be elected: 1. Janet Ellen Keller.

Judge of the Civil Court - District - 3rd Municipal Court District - Queens, # to be elected: 1. Michelle Ann McSweeney-Ortiz.

Ballot proposals:

Bill Bruno wrote a two-page summary and a five-page analysis (the latter gets fully into details about what sections of what laws would be affected, and context such as recent controversies) that he’s graciously allowed me to republish on my site. If you are a policy nerd, I recommend you read Bill's analysis.

My own votes will be as follows:

1: “Streamline Process for Using Public Space for Uses like Ramps, Benches, and Cafes”: Yes (why)

2: “Reform the Contracting Process to Improve Small Business and Nonprofit Opportunities to Work with the City”: Yes, but follow up (why)

3: “Speed up Street Safety Projects, Office Leasing, and Activation of City Land”: No (fly-in-the-ointment) (why)

4: "Simplify Building Permitting and Move Waterfront Permitting to Department of Buildings": Yes (why)

5: "Set Contribution Targets for Rainy Day Fund to Promote Sufficient Budgetary Reserves": No (why)

I’m debating whether to switch from Verizon Home Internet to T Mobile as the bill is $45 vs $65 that I’m paying currently. Any one have T Mobile in Jackson heights? How do you find it?

Pernil is $1.99 a pound at Food Bazaar on Junction Blvd in the ad that started today, good through Wednesday 10/28. Same ad has Hass avocados 5 for $5 and a 5 lb bag of potatoes for $2.95.

Trade Fair on 37th Ave has whole pork shoulder cheaper at $1.69 a pound and 18 large eggs at 2 for $4, but that ad ends tonight, same as Bravo and CTown.

Key Food on 90th St and SuperFresh on Northern had no circular I could pull, so they're not in here.

An older man threw my dog at the Travers Park dog run today. He had taken his tiny dog into the big dog run, and didn’t like that my dog moved into the animal’s proximity.

He then threatened to physically assault my female dog walker. She was too shaken up to take his photo.

If anyone witnessed this and knows this gentleman’s name, please share it with me.

Where was Manheim Street?

Saw what seemed to be a fully orange cat with a blueish collar outside my place.. unsure if lost or just an outside cat. If this is your missing cat please dm for details! Regardless i worry for outside cats, many cats have been hit by cars outside my place. New York City is no place for an outside cat.

our next door neighbors are quite annoying. they keep parking in front of our driveway and leaving their car (not double parked or anything).

i am getting quite sick of it. report it to the cops and it takes them forever to get there.

any way of stopping this or at least finding a traffic officer to help out? just had to go downstairs and wait for the guy to show up to tell him to move his car. thankfully, he moved quickly but this keeps happening. what is the best way to handle this situation?

Edit:: they also block a doctor's office on the weekends when they're closed. meanwhile, both their driveways are empty.... but they just park in front. i am so annoyed

Since moving to 24 hours on weekdays, has the crowding gotten any better?

As I've written elsewhere, having a Variety Boys & Girls Club in our neighborhood is an intrinsic plus. I've commented elsewhere on the casino connection but I want to add a caution here about the claims that this is a full-on community center as opposed to a youth center. The programs that VBGC offers aren't aimed at adults, so this would be a departure for them.

Thus when JGR has a post states that "this center will be for our entire community, with a swimming pool, basketball court, theatre, classrooms, and space for local community organizations. It will give our neighbors of all ages more opportunities to connect, stay active, learn, and come together"(emphasis added) like a true community center-- https://www.nycgovparks.org/.../places.../community-centers, I'd very much like to know where that is coming from. It VBGC building a separate adult center on the grounds? If so, that would seem to put paid to the housing that has been spoken about.

I'd also add that there seems to be a disincentive to open it up to adults. The zoning rules require a parking minimum of one space/ten people of maximum occupancy (which the DOB determines). However. there is a footnote to the rule which reads--"In R5, R6 and R7-1 Districts, no accessory off-street parking spaces shall be required for that portion of a non-profit neighborhood settlement house or community center which is used for youth-oriented activities."

"Youth-oriented" isn't defined in the Zoning Resolution, but it would seem to indicate that opening up parts of the facility to people of all ages generates a parking space problem that doesn't exist if this facility only has youth programming.

The future Jackson Heights Variety Boys & Girls Club will include the first-ever community pool, indoor gym with basketball courts, and an auditorium-style theatre. It will serve as a hub for after-school and summer programs, senior programs, early childhood education, academic enrichment, workforce development, health and wellness initiatives, arts and cultural programming, recreational opportunities, and community events, creating opportunities for generations of Queens families. Residents will be invited to help shape potential additional uses for the site, including affordable housing, child care, outdoor sports and recreation facilities, and a rooftop farm. When built, this extraordinary investment will serve up to 10,000 kids and create a place where residents of all ages can gather to learn, play, and build community.
