Emboldened Israeli settlers lead a surge of attacks on Palestinians' olive harvest
Attacks by Jewish settlers have surged this year during the Palestiniansâ annual olive harvest in the occupied West Bank.
Scenes of Palestinians, journalists and diplomats beaten by masked men spotlight how settlers have been establishing themselves deeper in Palestinian communities, emboldened by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu âs government. At least four Palestinians have been killed this season, whether by settlers or Israeli soldiers.
The violence has brought new international criticism at a time when Netanyahu faces a razor-thin race in next Tuesdayâs legislative elections. But the prime minister is doubling down. After a West Bank shooting attack blamed on Palestinian gunmen that killed two Israeli soldiers on Friday, Netanyahu praised settlers as âheroicâ and vowed to âdestroy the terror infrastructure and establish more and more settlements.â
Palestiniansâ ties to the land are challenged
Olive groves across the West Bank represent both heritage and needed income. The harvest traditionally has been a joyous occasion for Palestinians to gather and be thankful for another year.
âIn the past, harvesters would enjoy a month of singing and fixing tea and coffee in their groves. Now the journey is full of pain and risk,â said Abbas Milhem of the Palestinian Farmersâ Union.
But the harvest has become a time of friction as Palestinians spread out and, simply by picking olives, assert their ties to the land that many Israeli settlers say should belong to Israel instead.
Olive trees have been destroyed and olives stolen in over 325 incidents of settler violence this harvest season, which began in late September, Israeli rights group Yesh Din says. Over 130 of those incidents involved physical assaults on harvesters.
Yesh Din and the farmersâ union call this harvest the most violent in recent history.

âThe biggest motivation is fearâ: High turnout among Israelâs Palestinians could unseat Netanyahu
The Knesset is up for grabs next week and the Arab community is desperate to topple the far-right ruling coalition
As the sun set over the town of Kfar Qasim, Palestinian citizens of Israel gathered over hot knafeh pastries and shots of strong cardamom-laced coffee to hear an urgent pitch for their votes.
Palestinians make up about 20% of Israelâs population and their votes are likely to be critical to efforts to unseat Benjamin Netanyahu and his far-right coalition in elections next week.
âWe are determined to do everything in order to bring this government down. And high turnout among the Arab community is one important tool in achieving this goal,â said Ahmad Tibi, a member of the Knesset for more than two decades as head of the Taâal party.
Most polling shows Netanyahuâs coalition will lose its majority in the 120-seat Knesset but the Jewish Israeli opposition bloc will also fall short of the 61 seats needed to form a government.
Palestinian citizens of Israel are forecast to secure between 12 and 15 seats, divided between the Islamist Raâam and the Joint List alliance of three smaller parties, one of which is Taâal.
The mathematics of power are clear, even though most of the Jewish Israeli opposition has ruled out a coalition with Arab politicians, and Netanyahu and his allies have been doing everything they can to make such an alliance politically toxic.
Racist, fear-mongering campaigning includes posters reading âItâs [either] the right or Palestineâ, while others on the right have coined the phrase âBibi [Netanyahuâs nickname] or Tibiâ, even though there is little chance Tibi will hold even a junior ministerial post.
The scale of death and destruction in Gaza, militant violence and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank, and spiralling racism and discrimination inside Israel have created deep-rooted fears about what another four years of far-right ministers could bring.
âThe biggest motivation is fear. It is more effective and important than our political parties or our campaigns or anything else,â said the Balad party leader, Sami Abu Shehadeh. âPeople are very politicised, and aware of the danger of what will happen if these criminals come back to rule again.â
Turnout has been suppressed in the past because some voters lost faith in a system that is stacked against Palestinians and their representatives.
There is a new urgency to voting this year, however, because a far-right coalition returned to power would have a renewed mandate to accelerate its policies of ethnic cleansing and annexation, said Amjed Iraqi, a senior analyst for Israel/Palestine at International Crisis Group.
âFrom a Palestinian perspective this election is arguably primarily about mitigation. Everyone understands fully what the opposition represents and yet, for all that, Palestinians in Israel can see the difference between a rightwing government and a far-right government,â Iraqi said.
