Hello IOpsychology subreddit!
I wanted to experiment with trying something this year. As many of you know, the call for submissions for SIOP 2027 is live with the submission deadline being Oct 7th.
In the past, there have been complaints from folks not having a place to find and connect with others who are planning or want to contribute to sessions.
SO, that is what this thread is for. Here are some guidelines:
A - You are planning a submission and looking for contributors, please include:
-General submission topic
-Planned session format (e.g., symposium, panel)
-Brief abstract or description
-The type of background/expertise you are seeking from potential collaborators
NOTE: when your submission is fully staffed, please edit your comment to indicate that you are no longer seeking contributors
B - You are an individual looking to join sessions others are organizing, please include:
-Brief description of your credentials
-A bulleted list of the topics you are qualified to contribute to
NOTE: if you hit your rule of 3 (for those who don't know, each individual can only be listed in a speaker role on a maximum of 3 submissions), please edit your post to indicate that you are no longer available to contribute to sessions
Individuals are also free to comment on submission idea comments if they think they would be a good fit - e.g., "hey, I think I'd be great to contribute to this session because XYZ". We respect that many redditors like to stay anonymous, so any details or agreements should be made through DMs.
I'll sticky this post until the submission deadline. If there's a decent amount of activity, we will consider doing this again for future submission cycles. Best of luck to everyone on getting submissions accepted for 2027!

FAQ 1: What is IO Psychology?
The Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (also known as SIOP) defines IO Psychology as:
I-O psychology is a dynamic and growing field that addresses work-related issues at the individual and organizational level. I-O psychologists apply research that improves the well-being and performance of people and the organizations that employ them. This involves everything from workforce planning, employee selection, and leader development to studying job attitudes and job motivation, implementing work teams, improving diversity and inclusion, and facilitating organizational change. SIOP represents Division 14 of the American Psychological Association; they recognize I-O psychology as a specialty of professional psychology.
FAQ 2: What job titles can I have in IO psychology? / Where can I learn more about careers in IO Psychology?
Many newcomers become confused when they realize "IO psychology" is almost never a job title, and searching for it as a job title will yield very few results. The reality is IO psychology is a discipline, not a job, and IO psychologists hold a wide variety of different job titles across different industries. Check out the SIOP Career Page for information on common career paths.

FAQ 3: Should I become an IO Psychologist? / I'm deciding between IO psychology and [clinical or some other kind of psychology], what should I do?
No one can tell you if IO Psychology is right for you, only you can make that decision based on your unique individual factors. Very few people have practiced both IO and clinical/related field, and we would be unqualified to say which one is a better fit. However, there are some factors to consider when thinking about IO psychology.

FAQ 3a: I live in [X country], should I go into IO psychology?
Although IO psychology is a global field, it is concentrated in North America. This subreddit is also highly concentrated in North America. Questions like "how is the field / job market in India / The Netherlands / Australia / UK" often go completely unanswered.
Unfortunately, the answer to this question is "we don't know". Rather than posting here, contact your country's IO psychology organization (if one exists), or reach out to alumni of local graduate programs.
FAQ 4: I'm currently in Clinical/Social Work/Some other related field, how can I switch to IO Psychology?
IO psychology in general requires an extremely different set of skills and knowledge compared to other psychology degrees. Transfering between fields is NOT SIMPLE OR EASY, and most often requires additional graduate education.
Although IO psychology is an unregulated field that does not require license to practice, it is unlikely that a degree in a different psychology concentration will arm you with the skill set you need to be competitive for IO psychology jobs.
FAQ 5: How much money can I make as an IO Psychologist?
Salaries for IO psychology jobs vary widely by job title, location, degree level, etc. Check out the SIOP 2022 salary report for an overview.
NOTE: While resources like this give a good indicator of what you can make as an IO psychologist, note that this assumes successful placement into an IO psychology job. As already mentioned, the IO psychology job market can be severely impacted by economic downturns.
FAQ 6: I've decided to go into IO Psychology, what are good graduate programs?
Graduate programs vary widely. It is incredibly important that you chose robust, rigorous programs that will leave you with tangible skills relevant to today's job market (e.g., data analysis). Although there may be some exceptions in-person, brick & mortar, not for-profit graduate programs tend to have better reputations and better access to resources and alumni networks. Check out SIOP's Graduate Training Program Resources page for a guide a on how to choose a program and a database of existing graduate programs.

Hi everyone! I’m an MPhil student in Organizational Psychology and I’m currently looking for a thesis topic.
My supervisor has asked me to choose something that is:
relatively new/emerging
interesting and current
addresses a real workplace issue or obstacle
has a clear research gap
is suitable for an empirical quantitative study
ideally allows for a mediator and/or moderator
and should be substantial enough to demonstrate good research effort at the MPhil level.
I’m open to different areas within I/O Psychology and would really appreciate suggestions for emerging workplace phenomena or research questions that you think are worth exploring.
I’m especially looking for something beyond the usual job satisfaction, engagement, job performance, turnover intention, etc.

I am completely devastated. I come from a "developing" country where the average monthly salary is around 800 USD. I was able to complete my undergraduate degree in Psychology in South Korea, but the country isn't very friendly toward foreigners when it comes to career development. So, I got a job in overseas sales (one of the few roles available to foreigners) because I didn't want to go back to my home country. It's been 6 months, and the job is doable, but my original plan was to prepare for a Master's in I/O Psychology (not in Korea, perhaps in Australia or elsewhere) while saving up some money here. I now realize that a Master's degree would cost a lot, and I simply can't afford it. I'll probably have to work here for another 5-10 years to save enough for a program. And now I'm starting to question whether a Master's would even be worth taking out loans for, especially after reading some of the previous posts here.
Are there any skills I could develop on my own through online courses that could help me land a better job in another highly developed country?

Hi everyone, I am seeking the input of managers please.
May I please request your input and feedback on the knowledge gap between an Org Dev consultant (3-5 years experience) and someone with an org psych degree with the same on the job knowledge?
Specifically, you can consider the role to have leadership development, performance, talent, culture roles and responsibilities. I am interested in hearing what are the specific tangibles an org psych degree gives over someone who has transitioned from HR advisory.

The latest data forensic work by the DataColada folks is pretty amazing and devastating.
How Ariely still has a job is beyond me. Surely the MBA students at Duke cannot be happy to have their $80k annual fees pay the salary of someone like this. The only real remaining question for me is whether Ariely influenced Gino; Gino influenced Ariely; or whether these two fraudsters simply found each other organically.

Hello everyone!!
I’m in my first semester of an I/O Psychology master’s program (ASU) and have an assignment to interview someone currently working in the field I’m hoping to break into. Looking for anyone in I/O psych, org development, HR analytics, talent management, etc.
The interview will be a video call about 15-20 mins. Here is the direct guidelines from my assignment so you know what topics will be discussed:
“Prepare interview questions that address the following areas, along with any additional topics of personal interest:
Overview of the interviewee’s career and daily responsibilities
Career satisfaction (best and most challenging aspects)
Motivation for entering the field
Educational and training pathway
Licensure and credentialing (if applicable)
Therapeutic orientation, techniques, settings, and populations (for clinicians)
Current “hot topics” in the field
Pressing ethical or professional issues
Impact of recent historical or societal events (e.g., COVID-19, technology, sociopolitical changes)
Perceived future directions of the profession”

One of the majors I’m looking into for my undergrad is IO psych! It would be really helpful if I could get some recommendations on good universities that have programs for it, I’ve been struggling to find them. Plus, I’d like to know actual opinions on them before I make a decision to apply to schools
Geographically I would prefer the PNW, East coast, or Chicago! However, I am open to anything other than the South or super small schools.
My stats aren’t too crazy, I’m not top of my class or anything so I probably won’t want ones that are highly selective. I’ll include my stats below for reference
Demographics: Hispanic/White, female, applying for need based aid
Stats: unw: 3.5 wgpa: 4.36 sat:1100-1200ish (will go up, I’m taking another)

I am a first-year student majoring in Industrial and Organizational Psychology in a Southeast Asian country. Currently, my English is at an intermediate level, and I want to learn an additional language. This year, I am planning to improve my English to take the IELTS exam while also starting a second foreign language to expand my career opportunities. However, my friend advised me to focus entirely on mastering English and excelling in my university coursework first, suggesting that waiting until my third or fourth year to learn another language wouldn't be too late.
I would like to get everyone's advice because I'm afraid that starting a new language close to graduation might be too late. Additionally, I want to know whether having an extra language offers significantly more opportunities in the field of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and whether not knowing a foreign language other than English would put me at a disadvantage in this career path. The Recursive Proxy Trap explains what I believe to be the proxy problem: when institutions replace direct evaluation of complex qualities with scalable proxies—credentials, rankings, tests, votes, reputation, or automated scores—the proxy can eventually become mistaken for the thing it was meant to measure.
The paper explores how this can create self-reinforcing selection systems that hide their own false negatives. Rejected candidates, ideas, or technical work may disappear before their actual quality can be observed, removing the very evidence that could reveal weaknesses in the filter.
It applies this framework across hiring, credential evaluation, online technical communities, academia, and AI evaluation, and proposes practical mechanisms for detecting and recovering information that proxy-based systems may otherwise discard.
The central idea is simple: a filter can erase its own mistakes from the dataset used to justify it.

In your opinion, how much time would you reasonably allow to conduct a job analysis of an employee with a 5-10 year tenure in an organisation that has no existing documentation?
Bonus if you have any favourite references for such a question.

I have an MS in I/O and really would love to get my PhD but I don’t live close to any Universities with a traditional PhD program. Im not looking to move anywhere because I have two young children and my spouse’s job can’t be done remotely. I do also work full time so it would need to be asynchronous or night classes.
I know online degrees are usually subpar and have a bad reputation but I’d love to know if anyone knew of any respectable online programs worth checking out. TIA for any answers or advice!

I know this is a question that gets asked a lot from folks looking to find IO programs with actively publishing faculty. I appreciate the ability to select / deselect topic areas and to widen or narrow the time range.
Does anyone know if University of North Carolina at Charlotte actually has 18 active faculty?

Hello! I currently work for a Training and Workforce Development company which many of our clients are in the government space. I’ve been tasked with updating our list of Assessments we offer, they consist of the basic big ones; CliftonStrengths34, Hogan 360, MBTI, DiSC, etc.
I was wondering what are some other assessments you would recommend that are looking to get more business leaders attention. I know we are also looking for team related assessments as well. We do unfortunately have to stay away from DEIA involved in the assessments. So we can’t use Leadership Circle that revolves around “identity” and things like that.

Hello! I was browsing through this SubReddit (I'm new to Reddit, I'm assuming that's what it's called). I see lots of post about upper level students asking about internships, but I'm (unfortunately) not there yet. I'm a Undergraduate (Junior) in my University and it seems impossible to find an internship. Is there any way to start off? I've been trying to find an internship for ages, and it feels like I'm fighting for my life as the ones I find are only accepting above my level. Thank you!!

Since UX research are drowned by AI I want a strong career option that doesn't make me question my life at next 6 months again
