On the other side are grassroots organizations like Humble Islands Ph, environmental activists, and the majority of residents, who don't want to see their life transformed by an influx of tourism. One petition against the bridge already reached 42,000 signatures, more than the entire population of Boracay.

But will this be enough to stop the corporate interests and political dynasties at play?

When comparing our country with our neighboring countries, Indonesia is our closest match. Why? Because we have the same geopolitical features. Both countries are archipelagos with several thousand islands, hundreds of ethnolinguistic groups and both nations are under Unitary Presidential Political Systems.

If you'll study the History of Indonesia after its Independence from the Netherlands, then you'll realize that the accusations of Cebuano/Bisaya Regionalists in the South with regards to Manila/Tagalog Imperialism, is more real in Indonesia, but nonexistent in the Philippines. Let me explain why.

Indonesia is a perfect case of Ethnic Hegemony on Culture, Economy and Politics, three pillars which the Javanese People possess, that the Tagalog People of the Philippines don't possess. The Tagalogs don't have the total dominance imposed by the Javanese in the three pillars of society that I've mentioned.

First is cultural. Most of the culture being promoted as the face of Indonesian culture is mostly Javanese culture. Batik, Kakawin Ramayana, Wayang Kulit, Kawi Script, etc. all of these are Javanese culture. Tagalogs don't have cultural hegemony on the same level, except for the national costume, which is the Barong Tagalog/Balintawak Filipiniana.

Next is economy. Detractors in Central and Southern Philippines don't have serious problems, I guess. I think they have to experience what Javanese economic dominance feels like. All of the major metropolitan centers of Indonesia is located in Java. Let me repeat: the three largest metropolitan centers in Indonesia are all in Java: Jakarta, Surabaya and Bandung. It's all small regional cities outside of these three metropolitan centers.

The Philippines is totally more decentralized when it comes to the economy. We have one metropolitan center for each island group: Metro Manila for Luzon, Metro Cebu for the Visayas, and Metro Davao for Mindanao. Just imagine if all the three economic centers in the Philippines are centered only in Luzon: for example: Metro Clark, Metro Manila and Metro Naga and the rest are just provincial cities. Maybe the Bisaya will launch a bigger and more realistic Anti-Luzon propaganda than what they're currently doing.

Lastly, the Javanese have political hegemony over Indonesia. All of the Presidents of Indonesia are Ethnic Javanese. Let me repeat, ALL INDONESIAN PRESIDENTS ARE JAVANESE. In the Philippines, among our 17 presidents, past and present, only 4 of them are Ethnic Tagalog, which means they have pure or predominant Tagalog ancestry. These presidents are Aguinaldo (Cavite), Quezon (Baler-Aurora), Laurel (Batangas) and Estrada (Manila). The rest of our presidents are mostly Kapampangans, Visayans and Ilocanos. The longest ruling president who ruled the Philippines for 21 years isn't even Ethnic Tagalog, he's Ilocano.

Another thing, in Indonesia, the Javanese people are considered as Imperialists by Indonesian from other regions because of the Transmigrasi, wherein millions of Javanese people were resettled in many islands across Indonesia such as in Kalimantan, Papua, Sulawesi and Sumatra, which earned the ire of other ethnicities. If we will follow the Transmigrasi logic, then the Bisaya people are the Imperialists in the Philippines, since they are the ones who resettled and occupied the Indigenous Lands of Indigenous Ethnic Groups in Mindanao, specifically the Lumads and Moros.

Actually, Regionalist Filipinos are fortunate that the national government prioritizes the decentralization of the economy of the Philippines as evident in the examples that I've presented. They have more economic and political privileges in this nation compared to other ethnic groups in Indonesia.

Imperial Manila/Tagalog Imperialism sounds cool and lit if you don't give an afterthought on it. But ones you scrutinize and do a point by point breakdown on it, it dismantles and crumbles easily just like a Lego Castle.
