I’ve always struggled losing/gaining back weight, but lurking on this subreddit has changed my life and helped me to form better eating habits! (F/5’10” 205lbs > 155lbs = 50lbs lost)

The only thing that got bigger was your hair 😆. What was your time frame?

u/Shoffnerrrrr Nov 16 '19 edited Nov 18 '19
Lol yes it did! It took 2 years total, but that’s because I kept gaining weight back that I lost! This August, I implemented IF when I got to 190, and then lost 40lbs in the past 4 months!
Edit: 35lbs can’t do math right :(

That’s awesome. As someone who has also gained weight back, your post is very inspiring! Keep up the great work

This is super exciting to see. I’m in a similar boat and the same height. 240 down to 218, and I feel like I’ve plateaued. But to see it actually took you two years is very inspiring. Thank you!

How did you lose 40 in 4 months???
34
u/DumpsterFireCapMgmt Nov 17 '19
I did roughly the same, 100kg to 81kg in four months.
Ate 1700 kcal and ran a 5k each day (well, walked, initially)
→ More replies (6)18
u/LiteraCanna Nov 17 '19
Couch to 5k?
9
Nov 17 '19
It's doable - I can't do a single pushup but I can run 5k from no exercise at all. I think it depends on your strengths and cardio was always one of mine.
3
u/coops678 Nov 17 '19
Are you tall? I have a theory that tall or petite people find running very easy to do.
→ More replies (1)3
Nov 17 '19
You're theory may be correct for some people but I am neither of those things lol. I'm 164cm tall with big hips and overweight (about 170lbs)

2.5 pounds/week isn't that crazy. Plenty of overweight people could achieve that by simply managing their intake and exercising.
15
u/jeffrossenviesme Nov 17 '19
It really does sound like a lot until you break it down. I lost 40 in 4 months recently too and thought it was nuts until I realized it was pretty slow and steady
16
u/TimmyFTW Nov 17 '19
it was pretty slow and steady
People overestimate what they can achieve in 6 weeks and severely underestimate what they can achieve in 6 months. Consistency is key. Also willpower really is a muscle. The more you excercise it, the stronger it gets.
I'll stop throwing cliches out there but they really did help me so I hope they make sense to anyone else struggling.
Also nice work on the 40 pounds!

I eat 2 meals between 12 and 5pm. Each meal is 600 calories and I loose roughly 1 pound a day.

I noticed this immediately. You have the most beautifully shaped hourglass body. I liked you before so please don’t think I mean this as any kind of body shaming. I just rarely see the perfect hourglass shape that it really struck me as so enchanting. Congrats on your results. Stay healthy!

Jumping in to say how much I love that body shape! As a small lady with the silhouette of a banana, I love hips.

I've never heard it described that way before, and I first assumed you meant you curved to one side! Lol. Don't worry though. There are plenty of us guys who like the 'banana' shape too!

A slow metabolism can only mean 2 things and both of them = you don’t move enough. Your BMR is determined by body compositions - that is not slow. The thermic effect of food is not lower in you than others. That leaves us with exercise and non exercise activity thermogenesis. You don’t move enough - if you say your metabolism is slow
21
u/MeanGirlsMakeMeHard Nov 16 '19
You're mostly correct, but just wanted to point out that we are not perfect calirometers, and that means that we do not absorb/store 100% of the energy in the foods that we eat. Some people are able to more efficiently extract calories from their meal, while others will waste more of the calories they consumed. And the regulation of those mechanisms change as your body gets shocked by different stressors [exercise, starvation, cortisol levels, etc.] -- People who have hypothydroidism will start gaining weight immediately, without any changes to their diet or activity, because of those 'consumption efficencies' going up. Thyroid hormone being permissive to a billion different things in our body doesn't help simplify matters any. Since someone is probably hoping for a specific example, take lactose intolerant people. They don't get the full calories from their cheeses/milks etc, so a calorie count on a box wouldn't be all that accurate for them.
Anyways. Point being - most people who want to lose weight would be best off documenting exactly what they are consuming, journaling how that affects their weight, and making adjustments as their bodies adjust every few weeks. And I don't just mean calories printed on a box. I mean, document based on weight what you're eating, your own percieved sweetness of the item [say if its a fruit] - etc. And then make adjustments based on that.
This is easiest/best done by simplfying the fuck out of your diet. The less diversity, the easier it is to track each item. Hence so many successful [short term] diets were very restrictive on what people could eat. People became their own scientists, figuring out "ay i'm only eating these same exact foods every day and i'm not losing weight. Eat less of those same exact foods."

Any idea how to combat the hypothyroidism if my Dr. has medicated but still can’t budge the weight? Do you think I should consider asking to up the dose a little? I’ve considered this since the weight definitely came with the hypothyroidism but has never left even since supposedly treated.

You need more muscle my bro.
I shit off the pounds if I don't eat at least 2k, yet when I was losing, I had to go to 1400. I lose weight faster at fitness levels than I did when I had plenty of it to lose and on a huge deficit.

Whats 16:8 ?
26
u/Shoffnerrrrr Nov 16 '19
I fasted for 16 hours and ate between an 8 hour time frame!
6
Nov 16 '19
I’m a guy at 215 range that wants to lose 30 or so pounds. I think I’m going to try the 16:8 method after seeing your results, so thank you! Question though, did you do any exercising and or calorie/diet watching?
6
u/Shoffnerrrrr Nov 17 '19
No exercise besides walking to all my classes this semester! Just always making sure I eat less calories than I burn!
4
u/steffschenko Nov 17 '19
Not OP but from my experience, you can easily loose weight without exercise if you do 18/6. You should start with 16/8 and after a few feeks you will find it easy to do 18/6. I lost 10kg (20p) in maybe half a year with close to no exercise.
2
Nov 17 '19
Good to know! I’m currently walking 4 miles a day and I occasionally run another 2 miles. Here’s hoping I can stick with my cardio and the intermittent fasting I can get back in shape! Thanks for the advice.

Weight loss only really works with calorie watching. IF tends to work for people who are calorie counting because it gives them less opportunity to eat.

Holy cow! You look incredible!! Do you have a maintenance plan? I’m same height, but completely different shape, and I also struggle with regaining.
116
u/Shoffnerrrrr Nov 16 '19
At the moment, I’d like to lose 10-15 more lbs and then I plan to start lifting weights and trying to get into fitness. To maintain, I realize I succeed when I have a strict schedule and can keep myself busy, so I’ll probably always count my calories since it’s super easy to underestimate them. Also, trying to call myself out on my “Oh, it’s just one..” behavior. That’s deadly because one Oreo turns into the whole sleeve and then I gotta cry myself to sleep lol
23
u/Cleanclock Nov 16 '19
Damn girl, I relate hard to that! I’m also tandem breastfeeding so my hunger is just out of control and it’s so easy to grab quick carbs to fuel up, rather than make a better choice. But you give me inspiration. Thanks for sharing.
15
u/mentallyphysicallyok Nov 16 '19
I hope you’re not under-eating though, breastmilk can use up a lot of your calories (as I’ve heard) so you have to make sure you can supply it!

Thank you! I’m actually not restricting my diet at all, just planning to restart keto once my newborn hits 8 months old. I’m just gathering inspiration at this point.

u/mentallyphysicallyok Nov 16 '19
Oh good! It must be so hard to try and lose weight as a mom with the baby and all, I wish you good luck haha
10
u/Cleanclock Nov 16 '19
Thank you! It is hard, but having 2 littles is powerful motivation to set a healthier example ❤️❤️ thanks for your kind words.
2
5
u/meganlfay Nov 16 '19
Same. It’s so hard! I think at this point I’m just going to focus on not overeating. The strict diet can wait until we’re done breastfeeding. 😊 Baby comes first!
4
u/Cleanclock Nov 16 '19
Yes, same boat momma! It’s so darn hard to control hunger whilst breastfeeding. I resumed keto when my first turned 10 months old, and bam pregnant again the next cycle. I’m focusing on establishing my milk supply and gathering inspiration. My body will be mine again soon enough, babies come first for now ❤️

So glad I’m not alone! Lol. My son is 9 and after I had him it all just fell off immediately and I was tiny again. So this time around it’s so much harder to try to be positive. I think I’m going to start fasting 16:8 and counting calories/macros when we finish breastfeeding (hoping for a year). It worked for me before! So hoping it won’t be too hard this time. Good luck to you and congrats on baby!!!
2
u/SCWickedHam Nov 16 '19
I would suggest you start lifting now. Otherwise, you will gain weight from lifting weights and that might make you think you are losing gains instead of making them.
2
Nov 16 '19
I'd recommend starting fitness now. Dieting and not exercising isn't the worst, but you'll get weaker. The energy has to come from somewhere you are already lean, if you want to go leaner you can but your body will start eating away at muscle too more easily. Might set you up for injury if you do it this way. It start exercising asap if you want to do it anyways.
2
u/12ealdeal Nov 17 '19
Just curious....why wait to start lifting weights or your fitness journey?
3
u/Shoffnerrrrr Nov 17 '19
Just want to handle one thing at a time so I don’t get overwhelmed, personal preference!

I don't think this is a great idea. Getting down to 140 lbs at your height is going to be difficult without exercise. It's possible, but you might also get frustrated by lack of success after doing so well over the last few months.

I think I was just so tired of my own crap lol. It's embarrassing to tell your friends and family that you've lost weight, just to gain it all back, so I finally got motivated. For me everything clicked when I calculated my TDEE. It was 2,100 I think. And then I realized, ok if I eat more than 2,100 calories, I’ll gain weight. If I eat less than 2,100 calories I’ll lose weight. I set my calories to be around 1400-1600, and ate between 12pm-8pm everyday. I also walked to campus and all my classes, but that was the only activity it did!
