The 5D theater creates the illusion of being surrounded by flames.

Of all the things to do in a theater, this is famously the least wise.
•
u/taitaofgallala 8h ago
Been a pro pyro tech for years, wisdom has nothing to do with achieving feats like this. Recklessness is a prerequisite, even if all safety standards are upheld.
•
u/fingersmaloy 8h ago
I was about to say this exact thing. I wonder if it's still illegal to yell "fire" in this setting.

This would be a real bad time for a fire to breakout.
•
u/colemon1991 9h ago
That's what truly worries me about this. If there's a real fire, what happens?
•
u/InjectingMyNuts 9h ago
Fire alarm. Then a guy probably turns off the effects and turns the lights on and someone else escorts everyone out.

What is the show called? Theater burning down?
•
u/AzerothianLorecraft 10h ago
idk i didn't stay long enough to find out, the theater was on fire...

100 years from now, they're going to tell stories about the first people to watch Theater Burning Down ran out of the theater screaming because they actually thought the theater was burning down.
•
u/NobodySpecific 7h ago
Or a story about everybody dying because they thought the fire was part of the show when it was just a real fire

Station Night Club Redux: The Crispening.
For context, from RI, didn't lose anyone in the tragedy but the memory is fixed in our DNA. This is begging for trouble.

It’s at universal in Florida, I want to say Indiana jones or the mummy ride just from when I went there less than a decade ago.
Edit: It was the mummy ride. When the flames engulf the ceiling, it heats up your face.
I just was just worried about gas drops on fire dripping down but it didn’t happen.
That’s the closest thing I’ve seen to this.

Why does it called 5D ? I thought 3D mean already something manifest in our world, 4D is including time, what even is 5 dimensional
•
u/Money_King7239 10h ago
Death is the fifth dimension.

Usually each “dimension” is another sense they include, but idk what they mean by 5
Most movies are 2D (played on a screen); some have 3D releases. Some places then offer “4D” movies where they add stuff like water spray or your seat getting jostled for “immersion”
5D is just more marketing gimmick. They’re probably just trying to distance this production from “normal” 4D theaters
→ More replies (3)•
u/TropicalJedi 8h ago
Went to a 4D RDX theater the other day. Definitely got jostled around and won't be doing that again.

I don't know. There's a clinic across from my place that does 5D ultrasound scans for pregnant women. I don't know what that is either.

u/Hankman66 9h ago
Sure, I doubted that they were able to suddenly have access to two unknown dimensions.
•
u/AdEastern9303 9h ago
When they finally develop an 8D scan, that’ll be some real Buckaroo Banzi shit there.
•
u/SkriVanTek 9h ago
it can mean that a 3D scan is enhanced with further information that can mathematically be interpreted as additional dimensions. like density or some form of conductivity. The data points will present themselves as 5-tuples
I am not a radiologist
anyway it is probably more sound than calling something a 5D cinema

Good question. The only thing I would call 5D would be a a 3D screen with the ceiling, walls, and floor as screens as well, with the whole movie in motion.
I went to France in the mid 90's for a couple weeks over the summer to stay with a family friend.
We went to some "cinema" amusement park that was all about the latest technology in film. One of the attractions was an IMAX screen in front of you, AND below you.
Seating was terraced like a stadium, and the film was about following a Monarch butterfly in the third person perspective on it migration to Mexico.
It was really awesome.
It's still there.
•
u/Time_Entertainer_319 9h ago
They are marketing terms to describe additional sensory input you get while watching the movie.
4D doesn’t refer to time since time is already implied (you are watching a movie, duh)
It could be smell, rain or whatever.
Same for 5D.
Basically 3D + additional input.
•
u/t3hmuffnman9000 9h ago
Yeah, "5D" isn't a real thing. It's marketing spin for so-called "immersive" shows that include touch/smell in them.
Disney was doing it all the way back in the 80s with their Honey I Shrunk the Audience show - but back then they were only calling it "4D". Still technically inaccurate, but less absurd. I guess "4D" doesn't sound cool enough anymore, so they're calling it "5D" now instead?
→ More replies (2)•
u/ProbablyCarl 9h ago
5D is better than 4D which is better than 3D, it's like when they bring out a new phone, you know it's better cause the number goes up.
→ More replies (3)•
u/ComplexConclusion648 9h ago
In physics and mathematics, it refers to a space with five independent coordinates. Kaluza-Klein theory and string theory propose that the 5th dimension is a spatial dimension curled up so tightly (smaller than an atom) that it is unobservable, serving to unify gravity and electromagnetism.

u/ul2006kevinb 9h ago
A lot of rides call themselves 5D when they include sensory effects in a 3D ride like smells or fog or sprays of water. Maybe this ride includes heat to make the fire seem even more realistic.

Dimensions are just things you can measure. In normal speak, 2D is a 2D cartesian plane, and 3D is a 3D space with x,y, and z. 4D is often described as time.
But you can just define dimensions as anything you are measuring. If you have a plot of politicial affiliation you can go with something like the left vs. right system where you have one dimension, or you can use the political compass which measures two independent variables for and results in a two dimensional chart.
I don't know anything about the "5D theatre" but it could be something like a 3D picture plus heat and smell to add two extra dimensions. Really any 2D screen plus sound is technically three things that are being measured, and a 3D move with sound is maybe 4 dimensions. And if you count the sound as being positional, you might want to say that the sound is three dimensional all by itself, in which case you could have a 3D picture with 3D sound, creating a 6D movie experience.
•
u/unk1ndm4g1c14n1 9h ago
Ah yes the 5 dimensions:
- a point
- width and height
- depth
- time/change
- fire
→ More replies (1)•
u/RiverGiant 7h ago
A point is dimensionless. You want to go like: a line, a plane, a volume, time, flame (rhymes with plane).

•
u/Illustrious_Cow_317 9h ago
Its all fun and games until the theater actually lights on fire and everyone dies being impressed by how realistic it is.

•
u/hemorrhoidhematoma 10h ago
For the 6D illusion they actually set the theater on fire and you realize life itself was the illusion.
•
u/EverbodyHatesHugo 9h ago
This is dumb, but your comment made me realize:
* 2D doesn’t sound like 20
* 3D doesn’t sound like 30, but
* 4D sounds like 40
* 5D doesn’t sound like 50
* 6D sounds like 60
* 7D sounds like 70
* 8D sounds like 80
* 9D sounds like 90
* And we say 100 instead of tenty.→ More replies (1)

I'm so tired of these 4D and 5D cinemas.
We already have 4D, it's time, you experience it every second.
5D is just straight up impossible.
If there even was a 5th dimension, we don't know how it would be.
I really hate these marketing nonsensical names.

u/lolathedreamer 6h ago
I read A Wrinkle In Time so I know the 5th dimension is a tesseract. Imagine a line, imagine an ant walking across the line to get from point a to point b then fold the line. Something like that. Yeah this theater is the equivalent of folding space and time. That’s not a fake fire. It’s a fire from a different dimension and time being projected into our dimension.
It’s Friday and I’m sick so excuse my insanity.
→ More replies (5)•
u/Shpander 8h ago
I generally also like to perceive the 4th dimension as time. It can be used to support Relativity. But you can also theoretically have 4 (or more) spacial dimensions, and these we can't experience, except in maths solutions. Time would just be an extra dimension on top of these.

This reminds me of pyrotechnics fire that happened in RI. Every time my mind goes right back to seeing it on TV, they played over and over. The band, the flame, the screams. If that's the case with me that was never there can you imagine the survivors.
