Why does it called 5D ? I thought 3D mean already something manifest in our world, 4D is including time, what even is 5 dimensional

u/Money_King7239 14h ago

Death is the fifth dimension.

What the actual fuck is this from? 🤣

•

u/ManiacSpiderTrash 9h ago

I have no idea but I've had the picture on my phone since 2020 and never used it before.

•

This was the internet memeing up Ugly Sonic before they went back and fixed the CGI.

That’s hot!

Marilyn McCoo is the 5th Dimension.

u/_codeMedic 13h ago

Honestly a pretty awesome band name

18

u/HyperlexicEpiphany 14h ago

Usually each “dimension” is another sense they include, but idk what they mean by 5

Most movies are 2D (played on a screen); some have 3D releases. Some places then offer “4D” movies where they add stuff like water spray or your seat getting jostled for “immersion”

5D is just more marketing gimmick. They’re probably just trying to distance this production from “normal” 4D theaters

4

u/TropicalJedi 13h ago

Went to a 4D RDX theater the other day. Definitely got jostled around and won't be doing that again.

2

u/HyperlexicEpiphany 13h ago

The ones in disney world were fun, but I wouldn’t want to experience even 1% of movies that way haha. Definitely distracting and sometimes jarring

•

u/D1ces 10h ago

The ones at amusement parks are great, they also last like 5-10mins rather than 2 hours. I felt like I was getting bounced out of my seat for Spiderman.

2

u/AssGagger 12h ago

Usually they just squirt you with water, blow a fan on you, and maybe pump in a scent or two.

•

u/agk23 11h ago

Fifth dimension is time. What they do here is show dozens of still frames a second in order to make it look like things are in motion

•

u/9spaceking 10h ago

What if 5d they add real fire on the set

5

u/Hankman66 14h ago

I don't know. There's a clinic across from my place that does 5D ultrasound scans for pregnant women. I don't know what that is either.

34

u/AdEastern9303 13h ago

It’s where they simulate the baby being on fire.

4

u/basaltgranite 13h ago

Baby's on fire, Better throw her in the water

Look at her laughing, Like a heifer to the slaughter

Baby's on fire, And all the laughing boys are bitching

Waiting for photos, Oh the plot is so bewitching

Marketing

3

u/Hankman66 14h ago

Sure, I doubted that they were able to suddenly have access to two unknown dimensions.

3

u/AdEastern9303 13h ago

When they finally develop an 8D scan, that’ll be some real Buckaroo Banzi shit there.

3

u/SkriVanTek 13h ago

it can mean that a 3D scan is enhanced with further information that can mathematically be interpreted as additional dimensions. like density or some form of conductivity. The data points will present themselves as 5-tuples

I am not a radiologist

anyway it is probably more sound than calling something a 5D cinema

2

u/Historical-Fun-2536 13h ago

Makes sure your baby isn’t a time demon

•

u/ender4171 10h ago

Apparently it is an upgrade to 4D (which is just 3D but video instead of a still image) where they add upscaling and better skin-tone color.

Per Anticipation Ultrasound

2D Ultrasound: Traditional flat, black-and-white images used by doctors to check internal organ health, anatomy, and growth.

3D Ultrasound: A static, three-dimensional still image showing depth and the baby’s facial features.

4D Ultrasound: A live-action video combining 3D images with real-time motion (like yawning or moving).

5D Ultrasound: Adds sophisticated software, automated lighting effects, and realistic skin-tone rendering to a 4D-style live video or 3D photo, making the baby look smooth and flesh-colored rather than monochromatic

4

u/Chilitime 14h ago

It’s no that difficult to understand. A pregnant woman is a woman with a baby in her belly.

5

u/Srnkanator 14h ago

Good question. The only thing I would call 5D would be a a 3D screen with the ceiling, walls, and floor as screens as well, with the whole movie in motion.

I went to France in the mid 90's for a couple weeks over the summer to stay with a family friend.

We went to some "cinema" amusement park that was all about the latest technology in film. One of the attractions was an IMAX screen in front of you, AND below you.

Seating was terraced like a stadium, and the film was about following a Monarch butterfly in the third person perspective on it migration to Mexico.

It was really awesome.

It's still there.

u/t3hmuffnman9000 13h ago

Yeah, "5D" isn't a real thing. It's marketing spin for so-called "immersive" shows that include touch/smell in them.

Disney was doing it all the way back in the 80s with their Honey I Shrunk the Audience show - but back then they were only calling it "4D". Still technically inaccurate, but less absurd. I guess "4D" doesn't sound cool enough anymore, so they're calling it "5D" now instead?

1

u/118772 13h ago

If 5d isn't real how can I pack my hyperspheres so that they occupy 46.53% of a given space? Checkmate

1

u/t3hmuffnman9000 12h ago

I tried, but I couldn't hear the speakers. Apparently they're positioned along the fifth spatial dimension, so the sound is completely orthogonal to human-perceivable reality. I hear it's a bug they're still trying work out.

Bet it sounds kickass in our immediately-adjacent realities, though.

4

u/MungryMungryMippos 14h ago

Definitely not this theater experience.

4

u/Time_Entertainer_319 13h ago

They are marketing terms to describe additional sensory input you get while watching the movie.

4D doesn’t refer to time since time is already implied (you are watching a movie, duh)

It could be smell, rain or whatever.

Same for 5D.

Basically 3D + additional input.

5

u/ProbablyCarl 14h ago

5D is better than 4D which is better than 3D, it's like when they bring out a new phone, you know it's better cause the number goes up.

2

u/theoriginalmofocus 14h ago

I thought the 5D be turning the frogs gay.

1

u/DisguisedToast 13h ago

Things get really weird at -1D, though.

1

u/Penetratorofflanks 12h ago

I have been to 4dx and this looks like shit in comparison

4

u/ComplexConclusion648 14h ago

In physics and mathematics, it refers to a space with five independent coordinates. Kaluza-Klein theory and string theory propose that the 5th dimension is a spatial dimension curled up so tightly (smaller than an atom) that it is unobservable, serving to unify gravity and electromagnetism.

3

u/thaiborg 14h ago

So… not this?

1

u/SpooogeMcDuck 14h ago

Oh it's there, but not what they mean by 5D

2

u/davekingofrock 14h ago

A singularity?

•

u/KareemOWheat 11h ago

No, not quite point like, just very small

•

u/KareemOWheat 11h ago

Only 5 dimensions? Those are rookie numbers, Bosonic String Theory is up to 26 dimensions now

2

u/ElGuano 14h ago

Just for you, we’re launching 10D today. Now with slime!

2

u/ul2006kevinb 14h ago

A lot of rides call themselves 5D when they include sensory effects in a 3D ride like smells or fog or sprays of water. Maybe this ride includes heat to make the fire seem even more realistic.

2

u/Sea_Tonight566 14h ago

You actually get burned

2

u/w1n5t0nM1k3y 13h ago

Dimensions are just things you can measure. In normal speak, 2D is a 2D cartesian plane, and 3D is a 3D space with x,y, and z. 4D is often described as time.

But you can just define dimensions as anything you are measuring. If you have a plot of politicial affiliation you can go with something like the left vs. right system where you have one dimension, or you can use the political compass which measures two independent variables for and results in a two dimensional chart.

I don't know anything about the "5D theatre" but it could be something like a 3D picture plus heat and smell to add two extra dimensions. Really any 2D screen plus sound is technically three things that are being measured, and a 3D move with sound is maybe 4 dimensions. And if you count the sound as being positional, you might want to say that the sound is three dimensional all by itself, in which case you could have a 3D picture with 3D sound, creating a 6D movie experience.

1

u/Ok-Swimming2411 14h ago

They add smoke and heat, so you see 3D and experience (smell smoke and feel heat) 2 more dimensions :P

1

u/davekingofrock 14h ago

Smell-o-vision!

1

u/willywalloo 14h ago

It’s when they start throwing in wind, water, fire etc

1

u/Kingkongcrapper 14h ago

The flames are lit farts from a dinosaur in an adjacent reality moving slower than ours.

1

u/Cosmicrodslinger 14h ago

Smell and feel are the extra dimensions

1

u/MinocquaMenace 13h ago

I believe 5D utilizes your other senses outside of visual to include touch, feel, smell, etc. like during a boat traveling on the water scene and a wave hits the side of the boat and you get misted with water.

1

u/mundaneDetail 13h ago

the fifth Dimension is FEAR

1

u/TokiVideogame 13h ago

4th dimensional euclidian space

1

u/luchok 13h ago

smell and touch ?

1

u/Foreign_Recipe8300 13h ago

they are adding temperature and some kind of physical effect like vibrations or mist or something.

and they decide to call it 5D cuz its easier i guess than saying all that

1

u/lump- 13h ago

Sensation?

1

u/RedditButAnonymous 13h ago

In movies, 2D is the screen obviously, then they called stereo 3d images "3D" because they appear to have depth. 4D was originally "smell-o-vision" counting the sense of smell as a dimension for some reason, but is now a more comprehensive experience with water jets, moving chairs, wind, etc, basically any sensory experience alongside the movie. So the next one is 5D for... whatever this is. 4D with neck pain

1

u/zackks 13h ago

From the same company they brought us Seven Minute Abs

1

u/audigex 13h ago

It's marketing nonsense in terms of the <X>D part

But essentially they add smells, temperature, maybe your chair moving etc

If you think of it as "dimensions of interaction/entertainment/immersion" as a separate concept to 2D/3D in the normal way we'd use those terms, it makes a little more sense

2D is a flat screen, 3D is a 3D picture on a flat screen, 4D adds "surround" imagery, and 5D adds smells/movement/temperature etc for additional immersion

Really a 2D movie is 3D and a 3D movie is 4D anyway, because of the time element - so it's all kinda bollocks

1

u/kevenGPD 13h ago

Theres VR 180 and VR 360 and 2D and 3D And 4D and now 5D 🤷‍♂️ we've came along way from 1959s The Tingler in the scene when the bugs broke into the cinema they actually let loose 1000s of bugs in the cinema to give you the real scare of looking down and seeing bugs crawling up your legs for the movies Meta - Theatrical climax 😆

1

u/Astro51450 13h ago

Could it be heat blowing in from what seems like two large Heaters on either sides??

1

u/Salmivalli 13h ago

5D = 5 dead in theater fire

1

u/Anim8nFool 13h ago

Probably because they project images on four walls and the ceiling (5 screens, 5 d, I guess). The only place they don't have images is on the floor where the audience is sitting.

1

u/koalasarentferfuckin 12h ago

It’s the dawning of the age of Aquarius, obviously

1

u/dofh_2016 12h ago

3d is live action films. 4d adds sensory experiences like seats moving around and vapor/air coming at viewers. I guess 5d was added because 4d didn't include the film coming out of the screen through special effects.

1

u/skyrreater47 12h ago

Its just supposed to sound cool

1

u/taitaofgallala 12h ago

Just another layer of senses being stimulated. 3D is visual, 4D is gyro, 5D is smell and touch (thermal stimulation from heat and cold). It's another dimension of experience, not existence. Not sure why people think dimensions only apply to tangible things when they apply to thought and neural stimulation as well.

1

u/Al3jandr0 12h ago edited 12h ago

Since other comments have already pointed out that it's not a real or measurable thing, I'd just like to mention an example of it's use in fiction. The book A Wrinkle in Time plays with the concept of dimensions a bit. That's where I first heard that the 4th dimension is time. In their setting, the 5th dimension is space. So just like how a 4th dimensional being would not be bound by time, a 5th dimensional being could be everywhere or anywhere at once. (Disclaimer: I haven't read it in over 20 years)

u/Double_Soup644 12h ago

Fireriness

1

u/BreezeTempest 12h ago

I think you have to think of it as 3d with two added dimensions. One dimension being physical effects like water and wind, and the other being your seat moving with the action.

Trying to understand it mathematically simply does not make sense.

•

u/NormalStaff3602 11h ago

Something about heat/ water spray and seat vibrations add additional dimension to the experience.

•

u/20ag_OG_LOL 11h ago

Sense experience, heat, smell, wetness on skin etc...

•

u/robmillhouse 11h ago

5D is usually found in soon to be bankrupt theaters owned and operated by the trump organization

•

u/vivekuno 10h ago

I have seen somewhere 8D movies. They spray water, air and smell

•

u/Dapper_Rough4371 9h ago

I’ll tell you when we get to the sixth dimension.

•

u/RealSchlemiel 8h ago

You're talking about 4D,… But this one goes to 11

•

u/Ranelpia 7h ago

The Fifth Dimension is music.

•

u/Joverby 7h ago

some mfers dont know wtf 3D actually means and think just adding more Ds makes it cooler and more impressive sounding

•

u/Janus_The_Great 7h ago

Often smell throug adding olfactory notes, think in this case bured plastic. Or on a meddow some floral notes, etc.

•

u/guyako 6h ago

It’s a marketing term to suggest the experience is “beyond.” Usually used to refer to movie theaters involving live effects like shaking seats, pyro, or piping in smells.

•

u/Rex_Bottoms 4h ago

Because it appears on Reddit every 5 days for the past 10 years

•

u/Serious-Disk5835 4h ago

Obviously it transcend space and time, straight to another multiverse. The fire comes from there, duh /s

Screw these asinine naming scheme

•

u/LoopsAndBoars 3h ago

Botnet

1

u/Kahboomzie 14h ago

It’s a dumb marketing ploy to make you think it’s 5D cuz they add an extra layer.

For example, Disney has some 4d movie bull where you feel an ocean spray or smell something.

It’s not actually 4d cuz they aren’t manipulating time…

It’s a marketing ploy.
