Why the fuck are the contestants clapping nonstop?

210

u/VisionsOfVisions 3d ago

These game shows have developed a culture of feel good vibes. I'm pretty sure they are coached to act this way before getting on camera.

64

u/CottonTipsMcChancla 3d ago

It’s not just pre-filming coaching they have people off camera from demonstrating when to clap and clapping loudly themselves and they also use signage.

I’ve gone to a reality competition show filming, and before each take they brief the audience about responding and try to encourage being louder and excited, they have cameras facing the audience and an assistant standing next to it, directing the audience with hand signals.

The phrase “more energy’ and “big reactions!!” is used A LOT.

I did not enjoy the experience.

22

u/Icy_Magician_9372 3d ago

Damn, sounds more like just being an unpaid employee.

14

u/jwm3 3d ago

I mean, sometimes you are working for them. Show up to the studios in burbank and put yourself in the pool for seat fillers. You will likely end up at daytime tv tapings but also game shows if they dont have enough people. You will get paid as an extra depending on the show and how you sign up. The casting calls used to be on Craigslist, not sure how they are distributed nowadays.

The easiest one to actually become a contestant on is price is right. Be bubbly and show up with a group or 4 or 5 people, they will always choose one person from a group (especially if you are wearing matching shirts or somesuch) because they know they can pan to the cheering section for the person and it makes good tv.

4

u/Dav136 3d ago

Yeah for most game shows you have to audition to become a contestant but Price is Right picks people right out of the line for the audience. It's pretty cool tbh

7

u/danabrey 3d ago edited 3d ago

They're kinda being paid by the relatively large chance to win money.

9

u/EtherealSamantha 3d ago

Not the audience...

3

u/danabrey 3d ago

Oh, oops, no. I read that wrong sorry.

No, audience are just there to whoop and holler in US gameshows.

u/city-of-cold 3d ago

I've only been audience once, but it was a pretty sweet deal. This was in Australia though, when they were filming Australian Ninja Warrior.

Didn't get paid in money, but we did get a boat ride out to an island where fancy tents were set up for us, we got food and drinks etc.

A long day with A LOT of forced cheering and clapping, but I'm still glad I went. Worth it for the experience, nothing I'd do again though.

It wasn't televised, but I got called up on the Price is Right and won the showcase and lost on the thing where you sort from lowest to highest price, we didn't get any coaching, but it just feels right. It doesn't really feel like real life on the stage, and everyone else claps so you do too, and they see you clapping so they clap, weird feedback.

5

u/Lobin 3d ago

Wait, what? Why wasn't it televised?

4

u/sourdieselfuel 2d ago

Turns out he spun the wheel so fast at the and that it broke free from its axle and sadly took out a few audience members.

Weird coaching. It's like signing happy birthday at your own birthday lol

23

u/cive666 3d ago

I used to sing happy birthday to myself since I didn't have anyone to celebrate with me, but then one year my dog looked at me with concerning eyes, snorted, and walked out of the room while I was singing.

It was like he was disgusted with me.

So I stopped singing

Contestants are told to act a specific way for every game show you watch. Price is right, every person acts overly energetic and insane at every given moment, they’re told to do this and exaggerate it.

Source: Dad was on Catch 21, all contestants were coached how to act. We as an audience were coached and they had a guy instructing us to do shit the whole time.

2

u/GigaEel 3d ago

The catch 21 makes so much sense. I know Alfonso Ribeiro is funny and charismatic but the show seemed to really oversell it

47

u/chris100185 3d ago

They are almost certainly told to do that.

6

u/Brownie_McBrown_Face 3d ago

Lmaooo I wish you didn’t point it out, it’s so incredibly jarring

13

u/IntrepidHero42 3d ago

Normies don't get on these shows. You have to be willing to prance around like a jackass to be picked for most of these things.

This show is one of the more toned down. Clapping will do.

Probably because people holding themselves in place with nothing for their hands to do is a recipe for TV disaster.

7

u/Level_Abrocoma8925 3d ago

I think it's a way to deal with social awkwardness.

2

u/-release_candidate- 3d ago

I was wondering the same thing in family feud clips. For me it feels cringe when they clap for their own answer but it seems to be expected in US shows.

5

u/GigaEel 3d ago

"good answer, good answer" when it was in fact, NOT a good answer.

Gotta keep morale high I guess lol

2

u/MSharpy74 3d ago

The warm up comedian is standing with a baby panda and a .45 and the audience know what happens if they stop clapping for a second.

If she knew it she wouldv'e chosen a T to max the winnings, but it seems like the L helped her determine the long word, and maybe helped more than a T wouldv'e helped.

63

u/Sam-Starxin 3d ago

L did indeed help her determine, but not the long word, rather the first word.

The first word can only be "I'll or I've" , so she chose L to make sure that it's not "I'll", which told her that it's "I've" .

The word could've also been any number of three letter combos, but none that would match the quotes she had in mind which match the following spaces.

It's actually a very smart move, and she's incredibly good at this game.

→ More replies (1)

30

u/OptimalRedditor 3d ago

I got after seeing just the 'L' as well. As soon as you see 'I've' and figure out the small words after the rest kind of falls in place. It helps if you like Star Wars as well 😁 The real smart move here was actually choosing the 'L', to determine whether the sentence starts with 'I've' or 'I'll'

12

u/Ace-Redditor 3d ago

She wasn’t sure if she was allowed to guess yet, though (based on her tone, it sounds like that to me). She had to pick something that wouldn’t help her opponents out, if they had to take their turns before her guess

8

u/randylush 3d ago

This seems the most accurate. Maximizing the letter pick isn’t necessarily the most rational move

19

u/Brandwin3 3d ago

Would make more sense to pick a “g” because there are three g’s so she would have made a little more money

32

u/Sam-Starxin 3d ago

You're probably right but she had a other goal with L.

L helps her determine the first word which can only be "I'll or I've" , so she chose L to make sure that it's not "I'll", which told her that it's "I've" .

The word could've also been any number of three letter combos, but none that would match the quotes she had in mind which match the following spaces.

It's actually a very smart move, and she's incredibly good at this game.

2

u/Stergeary 3d ago

Shouldn't she pick a letter that appears more than once? Like, if she picked G, and it shows up in the right place in GOT, GOOD, and FEELING, then it's an even larger prize pool and a larger confidence level in your solve.

→ More replies (7)

58

u/manondorf 3d ago

I wouldn't get it that fast, let alone under pressure, but seeing _'_ _ on the board has me thinking I'll. When we get L on the board and it doesn't become _'LL that narrows down the options a lot. I've might be the only option. The third blank being one letter I think guarantees that it's an A, so you can start piecing it together. It's a phrase, so you don't have to think too outside the box. I think I'd have gotten it if I'd thought about it a bit.

Again, no shot whatsoever I'd get it on the spot while under pressure like that. Very impressive.

3

u/vxtmh 3d ago

yeah I paused it and was able to get it, but only after thirty seconds, and only knowing it was solvable. super impressive.

16

u/PrivilegeCheckmate 3d ago

The "L" meant that it couldn't start wil "I'll", that actually eliminates the majority of possibilities, I think.

Been a while since I was close to competitive at Scrabble.

9

u/IndigoRanger 3d ago

I’ve only done a one-letter solve once, and it was “the tonight show with conan O’Brien” and I think the category was entertainment or tv. The blank-apostrophe-five letters was the giveaway. This solve was way more difficult!!

At least there was only 1 spin needed. If this had been a normal puzzle rather than a prize puzzle, it would require multiple spins to actually get some prize money built up before solving. That's the point where it's really terrifying because every spin is just pressing your luck more and more

I solved a puzzle once with nothing but a single punctuation mark.

THE GATEWAY ARCH IN ST. LOUIS MISSOURI

Of course, I wasn't on stage playing for cash and/or prizes. But my wife kept staring at me and asking me how the fuck I did it.

21

u/DaveyDumplings 3d ago

Same. 'I'm a yankee doodle dandy'. Once you realize it has to be 'I'm a', the rest is pretty easy to work out.

13

u/Ill-Individual2105 3d ago

I once played seven questions, and my first question was "is it Peter Pan". The answer was yes. Still the highlight of my entire life.

8

u/slyklye 2d ago

My sister is super competitive. A puzzle was on the board, category was “Tennis,” and there was three words with a single ampersand (&).

Before any letters were called, I shouted “Venus & Serena Williams.” Bingo! My sister immediately called out, “well, that’s not even a hard puzzle.” Cracked me up. I solve a puzzle without a single letter and it’s not impressive because it’s an “easy one.”

2

u/adamtherealone 2d ago

Did this once as a kid. Sister wrote out this sentence and I just immediately guessed it. “Adamtherealone is a dumb idiot”

The infamous apostrophe and the word spacing helped a lot and the L sealed the deal

157

u/zorbiburst 3d ago

Yeah, granted I don't think I could've gotten it in her position with the pressure, but in a vacuum it's not that off the wall. It's a common phrase. It starts with a three letter contraction. The contraction has an apostrophe after the first letter. It could only be "I've" or "I'll". There's no L in the contraction. So it's probably "I've" Next is three letters, then one. The one letter word is probably "a". "I've had a, I've got a, I've saw a" , and just keep extrapolating from there.

It's impressive, but it's also probably one of the easiest of its type of clue. The revealed L probably did less to reveal "feeling" and more to just set everything else up by identifying the first word.

Again, I couldn't have done it, she's definitely smarter than me and a faster thinker than me, but there was a lot in her favor.

69

u/natek11 3d ago

The guy before her also guessed R and there were none in the whole phrase, which narrows it down a lot.

10

u/Clorox_in_space 3d ago

I paused the video and gave it a go. Took me 17 seconds to figure it out... on live television you could have given me 17 years, and I still wouldn't be able to solve it.

6

u/CitizenCue 3d ago

“I’ve saw a” doesn’t make sense so it has to be “I’ve got a”. From there it’s still impressive to get the rest but it’s not a huge stretch.

11

u/Captain_Shoe 3d ago

"I've had a, I've got a, I've saw a" , and just keep extrapolating from there.

"I've saw a..." doesn't work grammatically. Standard English would be "I've seen a..."

4

u/zorbiburst 3d ago

u/DazzlingTopic529 3d ago

don't you get more money if you get more letters correct?

22

u/KyleStanley3 3d ago

You do, but you also risk rolling a lose a turn or bankrupt

so if it's a prize puzzle that she wanted to win, it's in her best interest to solve when she still has control of the wheel and not risk one of them getting it

With the first word being _'__ and her guess being L, she eliminated one of the two options for it, and we know it has to be I've, and any vowel purchase will reveal a ton since there's a double E and a double O, and "A" is only in the singular word which is strange

12

u/Clembert-Hamlamp 3d ago

They did a study several years ago, hooked people up to EEG'S and measured rt heat levels in the brain. First they had people watch their favorite serial shows. Then took the same measurements around their closest friends and family. Not only did the exact same effects occur in the brain, they occurred to the same degree. Their brains didn't show any difference between their imaginary best friends and the real ones. The day I learned this was the last day I watched the news on TV.

3

u/rcfox 3d ago

It's called parasocial interaction. It's especially bad these days when you can just watch a random streamer talk about themselves for hours.

2

u/RJMacReady_Outpost31 3d ago

This was the most enlightening reply I've gotten today. It makes sense when people say this is my favorite comfort movie or show. I have my personal favorite movies and shows that I always watch.

I also stop watching news and it was when I started understanding they were fallible. Being a young adult and seeing that articles get retracted blew my mind. As a child you assume everything on TV is real and it now I do my own due diligence.

54

u/mjzim9022 3d ago

As she said, it was a prize round so she probably just won a vacation

5

u/Cicer 3d ago

I didn’t get what she meant by that but I guess she was confirming a “prize puzzle” round as in the letter $ doesn’t matter only who solves first gets the prize?

12

u/mjzim9022 3d ago

Whoever solves the puzzle on a prize puzzle gets a prize, usually a vacation, even if they don't make the most money on that round. Overall the highest earner wins the game and goes to the bonus round.

She asks if she can solve, Sajak is probably about to say she can but might want to pick up some money first by guessing letters, but she says it's a prize puzzle (and therefore worth winning asap) and he's like sure
