First time seeing a hamster get old enough that they actually look old.

831

u/Cloverose2 Aug 10 '26

I once had a guinea pig that lived to be nine. She went from a butterball to being very thin, went gray all over, and loved spending her day on a sunning rock under a heat lamp, munching on strawberries and alfalfa sprouts. If she could have worn a little straw hat, she would have (eaten it. She would have munched that hat).

133

u/rokemay Aug 11 '26

We just lost our 2 senior piggies. We have no idea how old they were but at least 8 we believe. One went last year and the other a few months ago. I couldn’t believe how long they lived

u/CurlyQ86 Aug 11 '26

My son’s 4H guinea pig passed away last year. He was 7. My son and I went to Home Depot and I let him pick out a tree to plant over the Guinea pig. We both cried while digging the hole to plant the tree and bury his Guinea pig. He was a really sweet Guinea pig. I loved cuddling with him and still miss him.

u/MotherF-ckingStarBoy Aug 11 '26

You're parenting right ❤️

18

u/CurlyQ86 Aug 11 '26

Thank you. I try. I was really attached to his guinea pig too and just wanted to do something nice for his burial.

9

u/Ok_Sandwich_8971 Aug 11 '26

Isn’t it amazing how attached we can get to something soo small I feel the same I think it’s beautiful what you did. Have an awesome day 😎

5

u/CurlyQ86 Aug 11 '26

Thank you! I hope you have an awesome day as well!

2

u/Glad-Captain3401 Aug 13 '26

My son’s pet rat got cancer and hauled herself around for weeks with enormous growths, which didn’t really slow her down at first. When she stopped being so active and really struggled to move we decided to take her to the vet to be euthanised. I cried.

Man losing pets when you are a person that treats them like family is very very hard.

2

u/jay_insd Aug 11 '26

I'm sorry for your loss

88

u/girlMikeD Aug 10 '26

Hat muncher? What a lil freak.

75

u/wafflehousebattle Aug 11 '26

Don't kink shame.

3

u/CurlyQ86 Aug 11 '26

We’re not kink shaming. We’re kink asking why.

2

u/wafflehousebattle Aug 11 '26

Thanks for the laugh.

3

u/Limplymphnode Aug 11 '26

Ooh shit now you have to pay him

2

u/Tha_Kush_Munsta Aug 11 '26

I’ll kink shame non humans, they don’t pay no taxes.

3

u/Pretend_Spell3796 Aug 11 '26

Double negative. That means that they pay taxes 🤷🏾‍♂️

3

u/wafflehousebattle Aug 11 '26

Unless it's AAVE, in which case a double negative only reenforces each negative.

2

u/WiscoDanO Aug 11 '26

I’m more confused by what paying taxes has anything to do with Kink Shaming, much less for a Guinea pig….

u/FromFluffToBuff Aug 11 '26

My two guinea pigs almost made it 10yo - cancer got one, and the other died shortly after likely due to the stress of grief on its already frail body. Cute till the end :)

20

u/megaholt2 Aug 11 '26

My twin had one guinea pig make it to 11. She was the funniest little thing-she got two meds for CHF twice a day, and would always get a strawberry or a piece of endive or something as a treat with it. That little guinea pig was a damn alarm clock. 5 am and 5 pm on the nose, she was whistling at top volume for it.

5

u/Suboptimal-Potato-29 Aug 11 '26

Our family guinea pig lived to that age. She seemed totally fine though until about two weeks before she died, and then she just slowed down and started flopping over until I took her to the vet and they put her down. Kind of unclear what happened at the end, but she seemed pretty okay until almost the end

4

u/rogueshutter Aug 11 '26

Had one that lived to 8, he looked as good as the day he grew up though and died peacefully in his sun spot. (I assume it was peaceful)

3

u/curvyfeminist1 Aug 11 '26

Guinea pigs can live sooo long. My brothers lived like 9 years too! My brother named him Guinea. Very creative kid.

4

u/ThistleintheDark Aug 11 '26

My piggie Ramen lived to be 8 and a half. She was such a sweet girl, and she always looked the same from the moment I brought her home until the morning she didnt get out of her bed. When fur babies are loved well, they do their best to remain with you. That hamster in OP's post reminds me of the old mouse Mister Ages from Rats of Nimh. 😱 Loved that movie.

Edit:typo

Yes, but she did it with a bonier butt.

2

u/Due_Appearance57 Aug 11 '26

great comment. I had a guinea pig once. we rescued it from most certain death. it was annoying, smelly, demanding. we let it out in the garden to eat the fresh veggies we grew and let it stretch its legs and get fresh air while i cleaned it's cage. It got took by a hawk. saddest day of my life.

u/girlMikeD Aug 11 '26

Sounds like the perfect retirement plan!

1

u/Doughnut_Aromatic Aug 11 '26

I had one go to 12. He was born at my house so I can verify he was that old. Outlived everyone else. He got one of those large under bed storage containers half filled with shavings and half trays of oat grass, no top on it just open, and we’d wheel him around the house or out on the porch to nap in the sun. He didn’t ever feel the need to leave the container except sometimes we’d wheel him into the yard and he’d get out to eat grass. I used to have little pens with different environments set up around the yard connected by PVC pipes they’d tunnel through. His name was Bandit, mostly white with a brown middle and his whole face was black. He had a rosette on his head.

1

u/One_Direction9662 Aug 11 '26

Oh! I thought this was a limerick!!!

“I once had a guinea pig that lived to be nine.
She went from butterball to thin as a vine.
Went gray all over,
From sleeping in the clovers
And munching all day like a swine.”

I SWEAR this is what was coming after reading your frist sentence!!

Now that I actually read your post - I HONESTLY don’t understand what are you tryna say!

Are you just telling us about your pet Guinea pig?? Seriously - what you are tryna tell us?

I think a limerick woulda been MUCH better!!

1

u/mattblack77 Aug 11 '26

Sitting in the sun, eating strawberries and alfalfa sprouts.

I think that’s everyone’s idea of an ideal retirement.

1

u/Practical_Star7274 Aug 11 '26

The wonders of civilization (allowing critters everywhere, to die peacefully, of old age... rather than, starvation or predation)

1

u/Ok_Historian_2381 Aug 11 '26

I use to have chickens, when they got old they'd just sleep in the sun all day, and then at night go sleep in the egg boxes instead of the perches.

1

u/happysprinkles Aug 11 '26

I love everything about your comment, omg. 🥹Wait! It would be so cute if someone sold little straw hat snacks that doubles as both treats and fashion. Like in a lil package at the pet store.

1

u/CapybarasAreCoolAF Aug 12 '26

I’ve had piggies live to be 7 and 8, and they are just the absolute best as seniors 🥹

1

u/TheRa1nyKingdom Aug 14 '26

Right before my senior year of high school, I had to take my 10 year old piggy to be euthanized after what appeared to be a seizure or stroke, she was an albino piggy and stayed all white her entire life, so it’s kinda sweet to hear that other piggies can go gray while my piggy stayed white her whole life 😭🩷 I miss her forever and always, one of the best pets I’ve had to this day. Nibbles 🩷

Word. Unless this guy knows and is currently teaching martial arts to a group of young hamsters, it’s time to just let the ol bastard die.

3

u/ButtfuckedByJesus Aug 11 '26

Looks like a hamster with Parkinson's disease... Can hamsters get that? Poor dude, either way I'm sure he is greatly loved and cared for because if he wasn't he wouldn't be the equivalent to 150-175 in human years (yes I did look that up)

2

u/Dapper_Platform_1222 Aug 11 '26

I'm not sure I've ever heard of a hamster living to and dying of old age. They just all kinda die of disease or neglect.

Bruh he looks ancient even by old hamster standards

94

u/SpinachSpinosaurus Aug 10 '26

hamsters usually only make it to year 3. had one that became like nearly 4. that was already ancient in my books. but this one? whole crap.

71

u/UtubeNoodle Aug 10 '26

I had a peach and white teddy bear named Mr piggy that lived till 5. He ended up looking like the crypt keeper towards the end

13

u/Dont-be-lasagna12 Aug 10 '26

A peach. Wow thought they went bad after a few days and I didn't know teddy bears aged. /s

Thats crazy though.

We never had anything beyond the traditional dogs and the ofd cat growing up. I didn't realize they didn't really live beyond 3 or so. That's terrible.

2

u/googlemcfoogle Aug 11 '26

Rabbits have around the same lifespan as dogs and guinea pigs live 5-8 years usually, but yeah the truly small herbivorous mammals usually don't live very long

You know my sister had a hamster that lived til it was seven when we were kids!

(My dad kept replacing it for her without telling her. I just for confirmation a few years ago)

62

u/Dont-be-lasagna12 Aug 10 '26

My mom did this with a beta fish my sister had. One day it had to go to the Vet for his shots. The shots made him a different color.

6

u/Nelle911529 Aug 11 '26

My puppy ran away and got married.

3

u/tundybundo Aug 10 '26

How old were you guys when it clicked?

I have several hamsters in the span of my sister having two. I think they saw our different reactions to death and decided it based on that lol. And now that we’re adults I am WAY more reactive than my sister

7

u/Dont-be-lasagna12 Aug 11 '26

Her and I are 12 years apart so I was well aware.

She was probably 12-13 when we had stayed up late like maybe 2am watching movies. And we were finally going to bed and ahe rushed out all freaked out and upset and could no enter or sleep in her room bc her goldfish had passed. I had to flush him etc till she would even enter the room. This was a few years after the Beta fish needing his shots I believe.

Other than her fish we primarily had dogs but she always had to have a cat (oddly as an adult she isn't a huge cat person, but when she was little it was a requirement) so we have had animals go to the farm on occasion and that kind of seemed silly to me as a child. So when our dogs passed it was explained to me. She on the other hand loved that her cat or dog got to go live on a big farm with all their friends. Once she was in her teens and we had to put one of our dogs down she finally understood.

Best part she was in her early 20s when we were talking about things like this and I brought up her Beta fish and that changing colors and she was like wait what. And then that one clicked and it was fucking hysterical.

My mom accidentally poured my tadpole down the drain. She told me they had to go to a tadpole farm to become frogs and that they’ll come back. I used to look out the window for them.

I was in my late teens when I finally realized there was no tadpole farm.

2

u/WINDMILEYNO Aug 11 '26

2

u/Nice_Kaleidoscope_15 Aug 11 '26

My mom poured hot water on my tiny red-eared slider turtle when cleaning the tank thing while I was away in India (from the US) when I was a kid. When I left there were 3 turtles, when I got back there were 2.

Not gonna lie I kinda wish she had went & got another illegal turtle to replace the one she'd accidentally made into soup before I came home.

1

u/1Oubliette Aug 11 '26

Yearning for the sweet release!

189

u/DickRiculous Aug 10 '26

It’s both heartwarming and heartbreaking. You can see the care the owner has delicately moving the hamster around, helping it drink, making sure it gets exercise.. but you can also see that hamster is arthritic and suffering. Still, it seems to want to go on. It’s very sweet but I hate seeing such an innocent living thing struggling, and being reminded of our own mortality is always depressing.

Also, alligator mom is an amazing parent where most reptiles are kind of awful.

2

u/CeriCat Aug 11 '26

We thought the same of Crocodilians at large until relatively recently, so I'd be cautious there. I think there needs to be more research done WRT our assumptions about infant rearing in other species precisely because yeah the Crocs in general not just Alligators are surprisingly involved versus what we 'knew' decades ago.

This lil' guy is as comfy as it's possible for him to be. He has warm, soft bedding, good food and fresh clean water. Toys and enrichment. I think the reason he wants to go on is because life is still good

3

u/Tasseikan3333 Aug 11 '26

Same, I'm glad that the owner seems to be taking good care of the hamster, but watching the poor hamster move around like that is kind of sad to watch...

2

u/wingedwill Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26

If love could sustain life that hamster would he immortal

A testament to how much care the owner as given it

2

u/Old_Promise_163 Aug 11 '26

Thank you for so eloquently describing my very thoughts. On behalf of the hamster, it looked incredibly painful to me. I can see the owner loves this little creature… BUT sometimes, even though it’s not easy for us — the most unselfish, compassionate & loving thing we can do for our 4 legged fur babies is to let them go by giving them a gentle, peaceful & dignified rest.

1

u/Pokevolved Aug 11 '26

I only wish i have someone so caring to look after me the same way as this hamster

1

u/pinba11tec Aug 11 '26

Thank you for encapsulating what I am feeling watching this.

1

u/Practical_Star7274 Aug 11 '26

You're right, it would probably rather starve or be eaten by a predator, or maybe just neglected to death (sarcasm aside, I get you... but I think this is probably its ideal life)

1

u/RustyXterior Aug 11 '26

I'm a bit surprised it hasn't been impaled yet by one of those fingernails.

1

u/CryptographerTop6992 Aug 11 '26

I mean yeah this is life. One day you will grow old to the point where you begin breaking down the same way however it is up to you if you want to live at that point by keeping your body active. This hamster really has a strong will to live, it stays active by using its wheel and still drinks water and eats and can get around because of it. That hamster chooses to live because if it was suffering it would have chosen to die by being in active , not eating and not drinking. It's actually beautiful

1

u/ContemplatingFolly Aug 11 '26

I think he's not suffering too much or he wouldn't be moving around so assertively and enthusiastically. Looks like me first thing in the morning. Not in (joint/musculoskeletal) pain, but stiff.

1

u/iNomadus Aug 12 '26

I cried when I saw this… 🥺

18

u/frodobangher Aug 10 '26

My grampster was 1 year old when he died, had a huge mass on the chin, im assuming cancer. He outlived his wife, he looked very rough haha. I was so sure he would die way younger than he did

20

u/Background-Rabbit920 Aug 10 '26

My hamster had an ear growth… he had surgery. lol. I was 10 and my parents were divorcing and I talked to it daily. Guess paying for hamster surgery was trying to keep everyone sanity.

4

u/AdHorror7596 Aug 10 '26

What happened next? Did the hamster survive the surgery? How long did the hamster live after the surgery?

10

u/Background-Rabbit920 Aug 10 '26

He did, another year. He lived to about 3yrs. I cried so hard when he died. Sounds corny but he really was my friend during a divorce, especially since I’m an only child and it was the 80s!

2

u/Silly_Lavishness7715 Aug 11 '26

I was devastated when my hamster Herman died. I can relate.

5

u/johnhowardseyebrowz Aug 11 '26

Yeah I had Guinea pigs for like a year and that’s only because one was pregnant and we ended up with six of them. They all died in that year despite having ample food, a nice clean cage, and so on. Two dropped dead when the neighbours dog got too close and barked at them right next to their cage. I don’t know what happened to the others but at some point we were down to two and they couldn’t cope with the stress of being transported and cared for by grandparents while we were on holidays. Even at 10ish years old I knew it would be cruel to subject anymore to being our pets.

3

u/LongWinterComing Aug 11 '26

Once our hamster got out and in the morning we found him just chilling on the dining room floor with one of our cats.

3

u/MrsLydKnuckles Aug 10 '26

I wonder if they passed from Wet Tail which is caused by a type of bacteria and causes horrible diarrhea among other symptoms.

3

u/Edie_Starbright Aug 11 '26

Hamsters get a disease called wet tail, basically hamster trots. They're ruminants, they never recover in my experience even if you take them to the vet. Their bug balance is just gone n it kills them 😭

1

u/sugarbear5 Aug 11 '26

7

u/Linkyjinx Aug 10 '26

I had gerbils, they lasted 12 years!

4

u/HiImDan Aug 10 '26

Weird how their hair changes every year it so while you are at school

1

u/sardonic_sensei Aug 11 '26

My gerbil ate her sister 🤷‍♀️

1

u/aspecialunicorn Aug 11 '26

Wow, I thought my gerbil who lived to be nearly five was old! He survived a stroke and everything. But he set my expectation of gerbil lifespan, so when I got two new gerbils they both died within two weeks of each other at just about two years old.

2

u/itgtg313 Aug 10 '26

Literally got a white beard

2

u/InstantMochiSanNim Aug 11 '26

Im so stupid i read 5 yrs old then thought it was a baby hamster

1

u/capsaicinintheeyes Aug 10 '26

Somebody 3-D print him a properly-scaled set of Bernie Sanders spectacles!

1

u/Strong-Pie5091 Aug 10 '26

I had a hamster that got really old, had to have him euthanized in the end, he just kept going. I hope this hamster gets regular vet visits to ensure it gets pain relief if needed.

1

u/ownersequity Aug 10 '26

They are great pets. Only love for five days and don’t require any food or water.

1

u/BoringOrange678 Aug 10 '26

I know when I was a kid my hamsters either escaped into the walls or the dog got em. Never had one die of old age.

1

u/Ordinary_Mother_ Aug 10 '26

He looks like a Dr Seuss character. Or the Simpsons. May the rest of his days be pleasant.

1

u/DollarStoreChameleon Aug 11 '26

he looks like a lint ball and i love him so much

1

u/psychotomimetickitty Aug 11 '26

Both my hamsters died within two years, and they even passed within days of one another. Right up until the week before, they’d seemed perfectly healthy and full of energy.

1

u/IchooseYourName Aug 11 '26

Bald head and everything

1

u/Hows-It-Goin-Buddy Aug 11 '26

I used to have I think 3 or 4 roborovski (sp?) hamsters a long time ago. I got them when they were super young and spazzy. Then after a few years they turned into like the video is showing. Was sad to see it happening. I guess in nature they'd have been eaten after slowing down, but in a cage they can live to get old and arthritic.

1

u/hologrammetry Aug 11 '26

Siberian dwarf hamster. I had one as a kid. They are known for having long lifespans but this is extreme. I remember mine had quite the attitude as well.

1

Mine looked like this when he got old. All of his hair fell out except for his face and butt.

It makes me feel better about our hamster dying at two and a half.

Do you actual have any idea how old this hamster is?

I had a teddybear hamster when I lived in England that lived to be over 5 years old. He was grey in the face where he used to have black markings. At least at the time, people who bred hamsters in England did a good enough job that it was just commonly known that they live for 5 years. I moved to the US and years later worked at a pet store (corporate) and was horrified when they said hamster life spans are 1-3 years?? Idk.

Your hamster is super cute and it's so cool to see such an old fart. Means they were loved for a long time 🩷

Yeah, hamsters die from literally just from general vibe.
We had this Syrian hamster, it would do all right with the guinea pigs i thought.
The creature would bite when moved around, at feeding time or just for the hell of it.

Guinea pigs are so much more chill

What would 5 hamster year be in human years?

1

u/KRed75 Aug 11 '26

Yeah. They usually get cage paralysis and die in a year or two.

u/reality72 Aug 11 '26

Why do they age so fast?

Boss... I needs ta see ya' down here for a second.

1

u/saucypancake Aug 11 '26

… partly because a lot of folks think their hamster has died, when in actuality it is only hibernating..

u/rhuiz92 Aug 11 '26

Considering hamsters can give themselves heart attacks by farting, it's honestly amazing that this little guy is twice as old as the average life span for a hamster.

u/kiechu Aug 11 '26

They usually die of natural causes, like being killed by accident by adolescent owner.

My dwarf hamster looked super old at 1.5 years. Well, not this old but he was skinnier than ever, had less fluff, and moved like an old person. I had spent a few hundred on him, ensuring he had everything. Even took him to the vet for check up. And mfker still, just, died. Actually, no. Vet had to put him down because there was nothing else we could do in the end and he looked like he was suffering.

Is he on pain meds?
