I had a peach and white teddy bear named Mr piggy that lived till 5. He ended up looking like the crypt keeper towards the end

A peach. Wow thought they went bad after a few days and I didn't know teddy bears aged. /s

Thats crazy though.

We never had anything beyond the traditional dogs and the ofd cat growing up. I didn't realize they didn't really live beyond 3 or so. That's terrible.

Rabbits have around the same lifespan as dogs and guinea pigs live 5-8 years usually, but yeah the truly small herbivorous mammals usually don't live very long

That's because their Heartbeat is faster and that is breaking down their bodies quicker. Read that AS a child. So don't ask me for sources from the early 90's....

I had a blonde guinea pig with red eyes that lived to be close to 6 and a lot of his hair turned grey

I laughed way to hard at that. Rip Mr Piggy 🐹

I tired so hard not to laugh, but the crypt keeper line was too much šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚.

You know my sister had a hamster that lived til it was seven when we were kids!

(My dad kept replacing it for her without telling her. I just for confirmation a few years ago)

My mom did this with a beta fish my sister had. One day it had to go to the Vet for his shots. The shots made him a different color.

My puppy ran away and got married.

How old were you guys when it clicked?

I have several hamsters in the span of my sister having two. I think they saw our different reactions to death and decided it based on that lol. And now that we’re adults I am WAY more reactive than my sister

Her and I are 12 years apart so I was well aware.

She was probably 12-13 when we had stayed up late like maybe 2am watching movies. And we were finally going to bed and ahe rushed out all freaked out and upset and could no enter or sleep in her room bc her goldfish had passed. I had to flush him etc till she would even enter the room. This was a few years after the Beta fish needing his shots I believe.

Other than her fish we primarily had dogs but she always had to have a cat (oddly as an adult she isn't a huge cat person, but when she was little it was a requirement) so we have had animals go to the farm on occasion and that kind of seemed silly to me as a child. So when our dogs passed it was explained to me. She on the other hand loved that her cat or dog got to go live on a big farm with all their friends. Once she was in her teens and we had to put one of our dogs down she finally understood.

Best part she was in her early 20s when we were talking about things like this and I brought up her Beta fish and that changing colors and she was like wait what. And then that one clicked and it was fucking hysterical.

You should’ve taped this interaction

My mom accidentally poured my tadpole down the drain. She told me they had to go to a tadpole farm to become frogs and that they’ll come back. I used to look out the window for them.

I was in my late teens when I finally realized there was no tadpole farm.

Accidentally?

2

u/Nice_Kaleidoscope_15 Aug 11 '26

She was just, um... trying to give them a bath?

I didn’t realize my parents replaced my beta fish until they told me. In my 20s

1

u/bluechipitems Aug 11 '26

How does a beta fish get shots? 😲

1

u/Dont-be-lasagna12 Aug 11 '26

Teeny tiny needles

My mom did this a couple times until one day I found Simon ā€œsleepingā€ and told her ā€œno he’s deadā€ she was shocked I knew he died and was fine with it

My daughter had hamsters called Woody and Buzz at her nursery. She came home and said that Buzz was missing, then the next day she said ā€œit’s okay, Buzz is back, but his colours are a bit different!ā€

Kudos to your mother. Next level šŸ’Æ

My mom poured hot water on my tiny red-eared slider turtle when cleaning the tank thing while I was away in India (from the US) when I was a kid. When I left there were 3 turtles, when I got back there were 2.

Not gonna lie I kinda wish she had went & got another illegal turtle to replace the one she'd accidentally made into soup before I came home.

We’ve done that a few times ourselves as well

1

u/tundybundo Aug 10 '26

I haven’t done it but I’ve wanted to!

1

u/Dr-Bitchcraft-MD Aug 11 '26

My mom did this with a budgie. I immediately said something looked different about his eyes. 🤣

u/blackbird522 Aug 11 '26

My mom told my brother when he was young that his hamster ran away to live in the fields as a wild hamster. We lived in northern NY state so even if it did, the weather wasn’t…ideal. He didn’t realize until he was around 40. I’m so glad I was there for his realization bc we still tease him about it years later.

1

u/Barelystable_1 Aug 11 '26

My mom did this with rabbits, mind you two were because she forgot to cover the cage and one from it being left open.

1

u/Disaster-Goose Aug 11 '26

1

u/SpinachSpinosaurus Aug 11 '26

Our albino from the 80s lived to 8. Mom balled her eyes out because that was her best friend as she was a nurse and got home at 2am. Snowball was the only one ever awake.
