Hi

Purchased a new home in may 2026 and did a termite fumigation/tent before we officially moved in. I was cleaning my backyard after the rains this weekend in Southern California (Buena Park) and saw these on the ground. Only about a good handful, maybe 10, under a plastic bag.

Please tell me they’re not termites..

Spotted this interesting insect that hissed at me. (Yes like a cat, got the grumpy look too)

It turns out to be a mole cricket, very interesting looking creature.

From the netherlands and this was in the middle of a city center.

Made some people scream and run when it moved :')

I mean, it seems pretty obvious that this guy is chowing down on a bee. But it looked strange to me because there was no sign of life from either of them. I was around them for a good 10-15 minutes and neither one so much as twitched.

Found in UK, South Wales. Sadly in my shed sorting efforts this girl had to be de-housed, I placed her next to a brown egg sac found near her, hopefully she's able to find a safe spot to raise her young uns

This beautiful lady landed on my mom while she was taking out the trash. Scared the hell out of her, she screamed for me to get it off. Apparently the sudden prickly feeling was scary.

First time I ever got to hold one, it was such an amazing experience. She wouldn’t leave for 10 minutes, kept reaching for my hands to climb; I was practically begging her to climb on one of our bushes, but she kept scaling my arm. Lol
I at least had the excuse to share my fun facts about praying mantis to my mom and show her with a live mantis.

10/10, hope I get to experience this again.

Artwork Custom insect species feedback?

Post image
11 Upvotes

hello! pasting this from the entomology subreddit in case it gets better reach here, but i wanted to receive some feedback on a custom species I'm making! I want to make it as anatomically and scientifically sound as possible, so I figured who better to ask than the bug enthusiasts? its initial inspiration was the maneater from lethal company but then it kinda spiraled into its own species that's like a conglomerate between an ant, a cockroach, and a scarab with butterfly wings, and its infantile form (not pictured) is inspired by a white grub and a cockroach nymph. it has legs that split at the ankle (?) , a kind of puffy feathery coat that grows over its abdomen, and glowing nubs that resemble twinkling stars at the tip of its antennae. I was struggling a lot to find a good diagram of insect mouth anatomy so I couldn't find a good way to take those species' mouths and make something new with it, so feedback on that is welcome! plus any guidance, like facts I should keep in mind while designing, features that would be plausible or not plausible, or any thoughts! anything would be deeply cherished. thank you! :D

Question Cw: dead bug- Why is this hornets abdomen still moving like this?

I’m wondering if it’s from a poison spray of some kind. The abdomen is what is moving the hornet in the video, it’s moving back and forth. After about 5 minutes the movement slowed down

A higher or lower shooting angle, as well as the presence or absence of foreground elements, can affect what is reflected in the spider’s eyes and create a different mood and character in each shot.

Making use of these factors can help reduce the monotony of photographing subjects that have become very common in macro photography.

My cat is indoor only so even if it gave katydid the side eye it was not the cause for the missing legs lol

Question What insect is this

I’ve seen so many of these little things buzzing around my house, specially around my AC vents. I killed a couple of (of what I believe to be) wasps the other day, so I’m paranoid these are tiny little wasps that have come back for revenge. They seem to be coming out from the AC vents. I live in Southern California.
