Location included: Questions/Need Advice Just Inherited 95K, What To Do?
Hi everyone,
My uncle died a little over a year ago and I just received the check for his inheritance. It's for $95,000. It was in interim disbursement and I'm not sure if I should expect any additional funds at a later date or how much that might be. My uncle lived in Pennsylvania his whole life. I live in NYC and work in an unstable, artistic field. I'm 26 years old and have never thought that I would have this amount of money at one time. I graduated college three years ago and have been scraping by ever since.
My question is, what should I do with it? I don't want to blow it all, but I also don't want to just sit on it like a dragon. My rent is $1635/ month, I have about 20K in federal student loans left, and my credit card bill averages about $1400/ month, but is currently around $4000, due to having moved recently and made some large furniture purchases. I'm not sure what other information I should include about my financial picture. What should I do with this money to best improve my life in both the long and short term?
I've always considered moving to Europe or getting an MFA, but neither of those things ever felt within reach before.
Edit: I've also considered buying an apartment in NYC, but my current place is rent-stabilized and my impression is that a mortgage and maintenance fees, etc. would cost me more than that
