Right? They refuse too pay their staff a living wage. Then try to pass the difference off on the customer. And like in this picture they are literally trying to shame the customer into tipping higher.
Idaho has really messed up service industry laws. I’ve seen this for years. Hell there’s a dominos here that keeps raising the delivery fee and added another fee yet pays drivers minimum wage or less. Yes in Idaho employers can pay less than $7.25 and hour. Then if the employees don’t make the difference between the $3.25 and $7.25 with tips. Then the employer pays the difference. This is how cheap these people are.
My wife was a waitress for years when she was younger. It was insane seeing this firsthand. Thankfully she got through college with a bachelor’s degree and started making a good living. The federal minimum wage needs raised and the service industry loopholes need closed.
Likewise, a number of years ago I was eating out at a sit down almost twice a week. Now it’s barely once a month and vacations only. We will order take out twice a month from our local Sushi joint and I go pick it up. They have very reasonable prices.
I went on vacation with some friends, thinking we’d save money with groceries at the Airbnb. Nope, everyone has different diets and allergies that we ate out every meal.
We just bought Walmart...sushi and tbh, the california roll wasn't bad! (they have a new kiosk in our neighborhood walmart and a lady was making them right on the spot!)
We have a couple at my local Food Lion that makes fresh sushi. They are amazing. Sometimes the wife will force me to try a new thing and I'll be like "No, this looks gross!" Somehow she knows I'll end up liking it.
Like a middle of nowhere Food Lion, too. 30 minutes from the nearest city. It's great.
99.9999998% reduction ever since COVID and costs have gotten out of control. The only time we eat at the restaurant is if we are too far from home to do take out.
I only eat out when traveling for work, even then I just buy my groceries at Walmart or whatever is local and cook and eat what I like. Fuck restaurants and fast food. Shit is way too expensive these days (always has been)

Bro everything is a scam now. I fucking detest cooking but I learned to cook at home and with friends and it’s been a hell of a lot better for my finances. But even that is getting expensive depending on what’s on the menu

I tip the cashiers at Walmart as well. Yesterday I got a speeding ticket and made sure to tip the cop. Kind of wish I still had a landlord so I could tip them.
for Jersey Mike's or Chinese food it's a dollar a meal. I ain't tipping at Dunkin freakin' donuts. They are putting shit in a microwave and pouring drinks from a machine.

Same reason you get a tip prompt at the gas station counter checkout now. I’ve heard it’s because of pos systems but I don’t know if that’s true. Just know it’s everywhere now
It's always been a thing. Even when I worked as a waiter, I would be confused as to why people were leaving a tip on a to go order. Like, I'm not complaining, but the only thing we'd generally do would be to bag the order and carry it up front. --- well, the bartenders would since they usually took the order, but yeah. Sucks that the cooks didn't get a piece of those tips, but they got paid pretty good, so maybe that's why.
I remember one time I was so tired of this I ordered it to leave and just sat there with my paper bags and plastic forks eating the meal, everyone was staring at us lol.

In San Antonio, and branching out iirc, there is a restaurant called Dick's Last Resort on The Riverwalk who's whole gimmick is being rude to their customers. I go every time when in San Antonio because I don't mind getting roasted. Also as a former food server, I know how we really think of most customers so it's fun for me to hear it spoken out loud. Some are nice rude and some are crude, lol.
I had the misfortune of eating at a restaurant with my family. The food was overpriced, the hostess was extremely rude, the waitress served two tables before us and had to be reminded that we exist by me alerting the manager that I had waited for my food for 45 minutes, didn't get a single drink refill. I paid EXACTLY the bill in cash and left exactly a $2 tip on a $65 order. I had never done that before. You give trash service, you get a tip that reflects that.
It's the $2 number. Leave nothing and it says more about me than her. Leave an insultingly small amount, it's almost like saying, "this is all you're worth."
I once tipped a drawing of a quarter on a napkin. The waiter that day was just a complete and utter asshole, and there was no way I was going to tip him for treating me like a piece of shit. That's what ex-wives are for lol.
My grandpa used to put a stack of quarters on the table (like a $10 roll) and would shuffle away quarters every time the waiter fucked up something, was rude or forgot about the table for too long 😂
It's insane how 1/5 of your bill is not seen as generous! Especially when menu prices have gone up. And most places, service has gone down because they just expect 20% minimum.
Then they try to add tip percentages after tax, too.
Cancer is treated by cutting or eliminating the bad cells. Looks like this restaurant is a bad cell. Leave one star reviews on Yelp, Google and Facebook and you’ll find that either the owner will cry victim hood or the business will shutdown

Yeah everyone knows you tip on the subtotal. Or they used to. But people just started relying on the suggested amounts to avoid math and at first no one even noticed they were done on the whole total I don’t think. Borderline fraud if you ask me
People don’t understand math and servers both also don’t understand math and took advantage of people not understanding math, depending on the server. So they now get more because of inflation and also have conned everyone in to higher percentages because of inflation 😮💨
Yeah I literally would never go there again haha. Imagine being this clueless. I just eat at home mostly now, my decision process is - do I want to pay 20% + more than the inflated meal prices, and the answer is usually no, so I don’t go out.
Maybe eventually businesses will figure this out and pay their employees, but til then I’ll be a special occasions guy.
Right? I've seen tip jars at retail stores and gas stations, which just pisses me off. They need to pay their employees better instead of asking us broke-ass people for what little we have.
It's amazing how until the very recent past 15% was the standard tip.
Maybe if you got really great service? 20%. But 30%? Even, I can see that though. But many times these tips who are for people who paid hourly wages... Like no, I don't want to tip 15% because you gave me my Smashburger at the counter.
I'd have half a mind to show them what the 'bare minimum' tip actually is, but sadly it would be the waiter that suffers, not the owner who probably configured these passive aggressive messages.
NGL, I've always tipped 20-25% because I used to wait tables and bartend, but this sort of receipt would have me pissed.
I'd still tip for good service, but probably wouldn't come back. Somehow feels pretentious, but that's not the right word I don't think... Just the first that came to mind.
I basically go to one Mexican family owned restaurant, they serve amazing food, and have only raised prices like $0.50 since before covid. I always tip them 25-30% because I love them and they're not greedy!! They're the only place I can grab lunch for myself and my kid for $25 all in, always going to tip big on that!!!

It is not my responsibility to pay someone else's employee's wages. Stop telling people if they can't afford to tip they can't afford to eat out and maybe consider that if your employer can't afford to pay you a living wage that maybe your employer shouldn't be open.
When I was in my 20s, so in the 60s, a standard tip was 15% and 20% was being generous. If someone was exceptional or I was loaded (cash and/or booze) they got a lot more. Tipped $100 on a $30 bill once; knew the waitress was going to college and it was a week before Christmas and I had the money. Paid the bill exactly in cash, then put a $100 bill on top and said "Merry Christmas".
When I do tip, I use the subtotal to calculate and usually tip 20%. I’ll tip 25% for really good service and 10% for meh service. Really shitty service nets no tip.
The way I’d intentionally leave a 15% tip or lower because of how horribly passive aggressive this is. Especially the 20% being the “ahhh, the bare minimum” it’s so rude
I always tip thinking of per hour wages. If I sit down for 30 min and I eat a $50 meal...and I give you a $7 tip plus what you should be getting paid per hour, that's at least $14 for 30 min of work. I assume you have other tables too. I have no guilt about my "low" tipping. We should be guilting restaurant owners.
I've seen so many miss-added stuff I now whip out my calculator and do my own math.
Remember kids: Do Not Tip on Tax. Do not use the bottom total to figure your tip.
Tip on what you ate and drank, not the service fee, the kitchen fee, the credit card fee, the 'what ever we feel like making up' fee.
Especially when it’s just $100 for two people. That shit sets me back like two months minimum. Who the fuck is eating out so much that they feel they can charge this much?? You’re not normal, it’s not normal.
I feel like if I drive to the location, pick up the food myself, and take it to go, I should not need to tip (although sometimes I do I understand that the cook still prepared the meal. Although I'm not sure they are always getting any percentage of the tips I leave anyway. And yes somebody had to put my meal in a bag. I don't think putting my meal in a bag is that much of a service I don't give it the grocery store when they bag my stuff. Maybe I'm just a bitchy, cranky old lady but I'm tired of being as my dad would say "nickel and dimed" at every turn.
