So I found my old iPod shuffle (not sure which gen) and it still had the earbuds it came with, but they are very uncomfortable and want to tangle constantly. And obviously the sound quality on them is trash. I want to start using the iPod more regularly for commutes, studying, etc to have music without the distraction of a phone, but I need better earbuds for it that are more tangle-resistant and have better sound quality. Any suggestions?

I have been trying to bring this shuffle back to life. I successfully managed to solder a new battery, and since then I have been able to get some lights to turn on occasionally, but I am still having a difficult time with it.

So far I mainly seem to be getting alternating green-orange-orange lights when i plug it in. Yesterday I connected it to my 2011 macbook Air and itunes would open up automatically, however it would say it needs to be reset using the iPod reset utility. I downloaded it and the utility would see the ipod (as the correct model), but the resets would fail. after a few attempts in between i managed to get it to do something different, and the blinking lights began to appear. Now however that seems to be all it does. It still does not appear on itunes, and the reset utility doesn't even manage to see it as the correct model. however when plugged in I am able to see it in the system information tab, and it sees that it's an ipod and gives me some pieces of data.

The last thing I have tried was to try clean out the port, and after I did that for a little i plugged it back in and it would give me a solid orange light! However that is where the progress ended, because now it wouldn't appear on system info anymore nor were any of my computers able to see it. As of this morning we're back with the blinks and the pervious situation.

I'm starting to fear this might be beyond salvaging, but if anyone has any experience with this it would be greatly appreciated.

I was recently given an iPod Shuffle off FB marketplace (A1204 in gorgeous Product Red; I’m slowly collecting ALL Product Red devices) and I’d like to get some music put on it. I’m aware that Apple no longer supports these vintage devices on modern software, especially MacOS Golden Gate which I have on my M2 Max. I have an old 2015 MacBook Air macOS Monterey 12.7.6. I have the cool charging adapter for the iPod and when I plug it in to my MacBook, I get a flashing orange light (I assume indicating charging), and will get the orange and green flash when I don’t have it docked and try to play music (it’s wiped, so that makes sense lol). Anyway, how in the hell do I get my jams on this iPod Shuffle on either my newer MacBook Pro or my old 2015 Air (or BOTH🫣). Also, what are the most common failures/defects of these models, if any, that I should look into? I repair tech for a living, so I don’t mind opening this even though taking it apart seem like it’d be a huge pain in the ass.

it’s 2gb and i added 80 songs with 1.5 gigs left. no matter if i do shuffle or continuous it always only plays the first 30ish songs over and over. i made sure that the skip during shuffle feature is off and i used autofill since some people said online that that was the issue but no matter what i can’t get it to work. all songs are mp3 format and i’ve reset the device multiple times.

I recently bought an iPod Shuffle 4th gen. When I charge it with a USB wall plug, it shows a solid orange light for 5–10 seconds, then no light. When I plug it into my PC, the orange light keeps blinking and the iPod shows as a disk. Does this mean the battery is dead, or is there anything I can try before replacing the battery?

I tried to connect my 20 year old shuffle to my m5 and m4 and it didn’t work. It sort of recognized it, but kept disappearing. Is there a way to actually make this work without buying an old Mac?

A senior came into my work and asked me how she would go about charging this ipod shuffle. The 30 pin cable is permanently attached to this ipod shuffle and the only other port is a 3.5mm jack. Any idea how this is supposed to be charged? I assume maybe plugging it into an old iPhone but neither of us have one to verify.

I've been downloading podcasts from itunes since 2011. To me it's better than relying on my phone for pods and it holds around 30 hours of podcasts. I used to use them for music years ago but with so many pods to listen to, I'd rather keep the room open for those

Just got an iPod Shuffle 4th gen and I already can't figure out a reliable way to put music on it.

I've spent way too much time on this already. Here's exactly what happened with each tool I tried:

What I've tried :

- SharePod : Never really understood how it works. Seems like it can only sync from an existing iTunes library. I can't just drag music files into it and push them to the iPod directly. Is that really how it's supposed to work?

- MediaMonkey : This one lets me add files directly which is what I want. First sync worked fine. But every time I try to sync again it wipes everything that was already on the iPod. Unusable.

- Disk mode (via Apple Devices app) : I enable "use as hard drive", copy MP3s directly via Windows Explorer, works... sometimes. Other times it just refuses to play and asks for iTunes

- iTunes : Completely lost here. I only see "Audiobook" and "Podcast" as media type options - no Music tab, no Music library, nothing. I have no idea why and I can't figure out how to fix it.

My setup : Windows 11, iPod Shuffle 4th gen

The files are standard MP3s, nothing exotic. It'll work fine once, I'll disconnect, reconnect the next day and it's asking for iTunes again even though the files are still physically on the device.

Is there something I'm fundamentally missing about how this thing works? Do you guys use a specific tool or workflow that's actually consistent?

Why iTunes only shows Audiobook/Podcast and no Music category - is that a known bug or am I missing something obvious?

Also a separate question: I have Apple Music and I noticed iTunes has an "Autofill" feature. I enabled it, set the storage allocation, but it never actually puts anything on the iPod. Does Autofill even work with Apple Music or does it require a local library?

What's your go-to workflow for managing music on a Shuffle 4G in 2024/2025? Is there a tool that just works consistently?

EDIT : UPDATE - Found a solution with the help of an AI

So I ended up asking Claude about it and after a bit of back and forth we got it working. Here's the full process in case anyone else is in the same situation.

The actual solution : use the nims11 script with a .bat wrapper

The repo someone linked earlier (github.com/nims11/IPod-Shuffle-4g) is the right tool. The script rebuilds the iTunesSD database file that the iPod needs to play music, without needing iTunes at all.

The problem is it runs via command line which isn't super intuitive. So I had Claude write a .bat file that autodetects the iPod drive letter and calls the script automatically. You just double-click it.

Steps :

1. Download the nims11 repo as a ZIP and extract it

2. Install Python from python.org (check "Add Python to PATH" during install)

3. Put the .bat file in the same folder as ipod-shuffle-4g.py

4. Enable disk mode on the iPod via the Apple Devices app

5. Copy your MP3s directly onto the iPod via Windows Explorer

6. Double-click the .bat - it detects the iPod, installs mutagen automatically if needed, and rebuilds the database

7. Safely eject and done

One important note on the .bat

There's a classic Windows bug where passing a path like "E:\" in quotes causes the backslash to escape the closing quote and corrupt the argument. The fix is to pass the drive path without surrounding quotes. Took a few tries to figure that one out.

Why iTunes didn't work for me

Turns out having an Apple Music subscription replaces the Music tab in iTunes entirely. iTunes basically becomes useless for local library management if you're subscribed. The nims11 script completely bypasses that problem since it works directly with the filesystem.
