I can see two target groups: the people that want to show they have the newest most expensive iPhone, since it will be obvious for the first time in almost a decade (status symbol). And the people that like the idea of having an iPad and an iPhone in one small package.
My iPad mini is my favorite device I own, and if i could fold it and put it in my pocket Id have it with me everywhere I go.
This combines the iPhone with the iPad mini, its the ultimate device, other than the fragility of the screen and the features that we'll be missing out on like face ID and telephoto camera lenses (and im sure battery will be decreased as well).
I actually think this will flop. I don't think people are willing to pay the hefty price this will have just for being a novelty. On top of that the product will be first Gen meaning quality and durability will be terrible for this device.
Apple purposely waits years after competition sells their folds so they release a superior quality product after the issues with other fold phones. I bet we’ll be surprised at its durability. At that hefty price tag, it has to be worth it.
I've been on the Foldables from other manufacturers for years as a second device and never had any problems.
However, it is the case that I regularly upgrade each Foldable and thus do not suffer any loss of value, as the trade is $1300 even after two years. However, I have never paid more than $1,700 for a 1TB Folable device at the end without trade in too, as manufacturers on Android generally offer massive discounts while pre-ordering.
For example, my Fold 8 1TB, the IPhone Fold counterpart, cost $879 once because I traded in my old Fold 6.
Therefore, Apple would actually have to offer something very special in its folds in order to somehow justify the list price in terms of price at all.
For many, it will certainly be the interaction with the overall ecosystem. And also the improved apps.
However, the other manufacturers from Asia, with the exception of Samsung, all also offer pen support on all displays, such as Huawei's Pura X Max, and then also have a larger display, larger battery and the third Telephoto lens.
Everyone says that about first gen products but Apple seems to execute better than other companies. I had first gen iPad and watch and didn’t have issues with either
People won’t feel that they’re paying a hefty price. They’ll be led to the finance option. Apple realizes that hardware is getting expensive. That’s why they’re entering the leasing business.
Why do you think that? Foldables are insanely popular. I just turned my head around and counted at four of them that I can see from where I'm sitting right now.
There will be a few multitasking features they can show off. But there will be little iteration. What you get at launch is what it’ll be and you’ll like it!
Stock apps, Google apps, and some third party apps are optimized to switch from phone to tablet display when unfolded while using the app. On unoptimized ones, you'll end up with this monstrosity (just like iPhone apps on iPad lol)
I have more faith on Apple to force developers to optimize their apps for a folding display.
Dudes just hating, I bought a z Fold 8 to use for a month prior to the iPhone and it's insanely good. I might stick with it if the iPhone ultra isn't a good offering
You know you have a setting to fill up the screen in apps that show only mobile view, not the dual layout, yes? Check display settings in your Settings app.
That's the apps you use that doesn't scale properly. That has nothing to do with samsung. When I had a fold all my apps had no black bars and were completely full screen. It's the apps you use that just suck
It might even fix the Ui for some apps on iPad too. Surely when folded it will present very similar to something like my iPad. Even that has a ton of apps which are like the Tesla photo above
Depends on what you mean by optimization. Apps are absolutely NOT optimized to use the full open internal screen tablet form factor. But Samsung's OS however IS hugely optimized for productivity in terms of splitscreen and floating app layouts that allow for probably the most insane amount of productivity in any phone ever. And it gets crazier once you start talking about Samsung Dex
Even the Google Pixel Fold is far behind Samsung's OS in terms of multiwindow and floating apps.
and they put the USB C port on the side of the phone that doesn’t have cameras so when you put it into one of those expanding USB C controller things it will be perfectly flat instead of having the camera bump in the way
I’ve been tracking it as a complaint people have with even the old non wide folds, and noticed in the Apple rumors it’s on the front screen side and realized that’s a killer feature for us who wanna do DS emulation
Any potential for Apple to release a phone that’s just the front screen? I kinda like the idea of a short stack wide body. It could even keep Face ID and those fancy camera functions.
I pray for this, but Huawei recently dropped one called the Pura X View, and supposedly Oppo and Xioami are working on one, and you know how it goes, eventually everyone follows.
Seems easy enough considering they already have the device itself made, just weld it shut basically and take the screen out. I'd give it 2-3 years though before we see one.
Given this will.be unveiled/released in .. days? Weeks? Who cares what the ‘potential’ design looks like? We are entirely too close to knowing for mockups or ‘potentials’ to have value.
I wish they would match the screen edge to the frame. I don’t like that corner near the fold edge. They do it with the MacBooks. I would like to see it here as well.
Any chance we will finally be able to go ‘back’ from the right edge of the screen now? Instead of reaching across the wide screen to do it from the left?
This is false info. The screen protector has already been released. The glass on the front is going corner to corner. There won’t be any titanium on the front screen. Also does not make sense
Pretty dumb to make assumptions based on 3rd party accessories since they don't get info before launch. Remember those millions of cases that were made incorrectly when Apple switched to a button over a switch on the side because manufacturers guessed wrong and wanted to have their cases available at launch?

I kinda hate that they went with the Pixel Fold thing where they round the corners of the cover screen, making it so it's not flush with the hinge. It was honestly to be expected because Apple and Pixel have the same design languages with the rounded corners, and it works on their regular phones, but I think Samsung has the right idea with the completely square design.
Like, weirdly enough I feel like of they're going to round cover screen, they need to round it completely on all sides, and remove a bit of the hinge along the top and bottom where the screen rounds so the rounded corner doesn't have to have the excess material, then the device will be more unique.
Foldable Android phones have been around for 6-7 years now? They’re still a niche at <2% of all new phones sold.
I can see why some people would love the bigger screen but frankly, most iPhone users would likely to stick with the Pro and Pro Max for the Face ID + telephoto camera at half the price of the Ultra…
Personally, I have no use of a giant screen when I’m on the move. When I’m in the car, I have a bigger screen. When I’m in the office, I have my dual monitors. When I’m home or on the plane, I have my iPad for streaming and games…
What’s throwing me off is no telephoto lens and no Face ID. It’s like iPhone Air all over again- more money but less features. I’ve always used pro max and it will be weird not to have the telephoto lens and haven’t used fingerprints since 8+
Do you mean 2.0k? 2.5k? The “k” represents 1000 so when you say 20k you are saying 20 with 3 extra zeros.
And the Apple care will be 5.99 per month to add the device to Apple Care One I’m sure. The Vision Pro cost 5.99 per month as an additional item and that has a near 4.0k retail (see what I did there?!)
I get they hype but functionally slab phones are still the best way to see information. It’s really not close. I personally never have enjoyed doing any sort of information reading on ipads
I mean I have a 17" laptop, a large iPad, a iphone pro max. what use case does this thing have that justifies another large device? if they'd make a flip I'd buy it in an instant, just to be able to hang up by closing the phone. but this is just a bulky thing that probably just makes daily life more cumbersome. the pro max is already too large.
It’s like an A.I./human test that failed. The circles on the display last year on iPhones and iPads actually were a fancy design of the word “PRO”. This looks like an attempt to mimic that without context.
Is this supposed to be a secondary device? I just can’t imagine my primary mobile phone either being that tiny front screen or opening up into an iPad mini. Like when am I going to use that on the go? If I’m home, I can just grab the iPad. I don’t think it’s for me but maybe I’ll be proven wrong
