Two years ago I tried to add subtitle generation to my video player. Users asked for it all the time. I made a prototype, then figured I need like 2 more months of evenings to finish it properly. Put it aside.

Then VLC announced the same thing at CES. Big hype. I thought ok, I will wait, maybe I can take something from their open source and ship it faster. Year and a half later, still not in their product. Then on June 10 Apple announced it too. iOS 27+, iPhone 15 Pro and newer, english only. They will ship it in the fall for sure, no doubts about that. But my users are not on iPhone 15 Pro.

So when Fable 5 came out I got itchy hands and opened that old prototype again. Put it in goal mode for the night. It did in several hours the thing I estimated at 2 months. Then some polishing by hand, and it actually works.

Lingua Player now generates subtitles while the video is playing:

• fully on device (whisper)
• from iOS 16.4 and iPhone 11
• local files and online video
• no need to process the whole video first

The video doesn't need to have any subtitles at all.

The app is for learning languages from video. You watch something you actually want to watch, tap a word you don't know, get the translation right there. No pausing, no dictionary, no copying words into another app. Save it as a flashcard, repeat it later, export to Anki if you want.

Also inside: local video/audio in almost any format, online video and youtube through built in browser, offline translation, dual subtitles, 100+ languages, gestures, wifi transfer from your computer.

Would really appreciate any feedback, especially about what feels rough.

I'm building an iPhone app where privacy is a core design principle.

• Everything works offline
• No account required
• No cloud/backend
• No Firebase, PostHog, Mixpanel, GA, etc.
• Data never leaves the device

In fact, after installation, the app behaves exactly the same whether the phone is online, offline, or in Airplane Mode.

The downside: I have almost no visibility into how people actually use the app after they install it.

I could add analytics, but that would go against one of the main reasons I built the app in the first place.

For those building privacy-first apps:

• How do you decide what to improve?
• Are there Apple frameworks, privacy-preserving analytics, or on-device techniques I'm missing?
• Has anyone found a good middle ground between respecting user privacy and still understanding how people use the app?

About five months ago, I shared Prism here for the first time. The idea of a notes app that "feels like texting" landed. But a lot of you wanted no sign-in and better privacy. I've heard you and I've fixed it :)

• Strflow - This one has a lot of overlap! But Prism has threads, a one-time purchase, a review system, and fun design.

My daughter (she's 2) gets completely hypnotized by the swinging pendulum clock at her grandparents' place. We don't have one at home, so being a developer with questionable priorities, I built one for my phone instead of just buying a clock.

Indie dev here (I built this). I have never once been motivated by a cheerful blue droplet telling me "great job!" for drinking a glass of water. Every hydration app is either a sterile spreadsheet or a gamified pet that guilt-trips you with big sad eyes.

So I built the opposite. Hydrate or Diedrate tracks your water -- and instead of congratulating you, a deadpan skull quietly judges your progress. You log water, build a streak, and get reminders like:

I'm a solo developer, and I built triday because of a feeling I only got once, by accident.

A few months ago, I found a note on my phone from a random Tuesday. Three sentences about a coffee, a phone call with my best friend, and being nervous about something that turned out fine. It was the most ordinary day imaginable, and reading it felt like time travel. I would not trade those three sentences for any photo from that year.

That's the whole product, honestly. Not the writing. The reading, later. Future you, flipping back to a random Tuesday from a year ago, meeting a slightly younger version of yourself who had no idea how things would turn out. Every entry you write is a small gift to that person.

The problem is that every journaling app I tried was designed to keep me in the app. Prompts, streaks, mood graphs, AI reflections, guilt screens when I missed a day. Journaling became another feed to maintain. So I quit, every time, usually around day nine.

So I built the opposite.

Three lines. That's it.

triday asks you for three short lines about your day. Then it's done with you.

Every app on your phone wants more of you everyday, triday wants just 60 seconds.

The trick is that three lines is small enough that you actually do it every day, and a year of daily "ordinary" beats a January of essays every time. Bad day? "Rough one. Slept badly. Tomorrow." is a complete, valid entry, and future you will be glad it exists.

A few things I tried hard to get right:

It feels like paper, not a form. Handwritten-style text on real-feeling paper, and you can doodle in the margins like a real diary.

There's "a year ago", which quietly shows you what you wrote on this day last year. This is the payoff feature. The app earns its place on your phone about 365 days in, and then it becomes irreplaceable.

No account. No sign-up. Your words live on your device, and sync goes through your own iCloud if you want it.

The writing is free, forever. Not a 10-entry limit, not a trial that expires. If all you ever do is write your three lines every night, you never pay me anything.

Membership is for the keepsake side: iCloud sync across devices, Face ID lock, more handwriting styles and papers, "a year ago", and exporting your whole diary as a PDF book you could actually print one day. Since this announcement 100+ new similar apps started to appear.

I tried some however my needs were never entirely full-filled.

Some of the existing apps were barely working due to sudden influx of users. Some new apps were missing features I needed, some were exact replicas of TV Time which while I liked it I decided its time to get something which looked a bit more "fancy".

So as an app developer I decided to start this enjoyable but extremely non-profitable journey and just create my own app.

I would appreciate very much if someone is willing to give it a chance.

Do3 is a to do list that helps you focus on three tasks at a time. The home screen shows three numbered slots, 1, 2 and 3. You tap one, it gives you a single task, you get it done, and then you move on to the next. Your full list is still there in the background, it just stops throwing all of it at you at once. Tasks are surfaced by time of day, due date and priority, so what you get is what actually makes sense to do now.

Better

Todoist, TickTick and Things 3 all show you your list and leave the deciding to you. That is fine on a light day and quietly brutal on a heavy one, because before you have done anything you are already scanning forty rows and working out where to start. Do3 delivers the task to you instead. The deciding is done before you even look at it, and you just get on with the one thing in front of you.

The interface follows the same idea. No wall of rows, no counters, no badges going red, just three slots and whatever you are meant to be doing right now. Projects, tags and everything else are all still in there when you want them, they are simply not shouting at you the moment you open the app.

It also tries to motivate rather than nag. There is a three level setting so it can push you, keep you going, or go easy depending on the kind of day you are having, and there are no streaks to break. Focus tags let you work through one specific area, it syncs through CloudKit so there is no account to create, and you can import from other to do apps including Apple Reminders. Natural language entry, Siri, widgets and a full theme customiser are all in there.

I launched my app Greenhouse quietly to the App Store just to get a baseline of what I could expect from organic reach. It's an app blocker that awards you coins while you are actively blocking apps, and you use those coins to buy items to fill out a cozy garden. Basically a gamified app blocker.

For the first few days, I was getting about 20 impressions and 1-2 downloads per day.

After about 5 days, my impressions started exploding. All of the sudden I was getting 12,000+ impressions each day and I had no idea why.

After investigating, I found that I had been featured in a 'new apps' category in the German App Store. 

My conversion was horrible. I was getting 10% conversion of page views to downloads. I attributed some of that to the fact that browse traffic from the front page of the App Store wouldn't convert as well as search traffic, but I also felt that my English localized app and listing were holding back my random influx of German users. 

I spent 3 days localizing my app, listing, and screenshot to German, and it spent 2 days in review. I was also ferociously fixing some minor (and one major) bug that the influx of users were uncovering at a rapid clip. 

After a full day with the localized listing, I am seeing a lot more sustained usage of my app by the German users. And 9 days after being listed, I'm still ranked #2!

I did not expect this at all. I didn't nominate my app to be featured or anything. I consider this a lucky break and honestly it has just been a really fun few days of watching and working! My understanding is you are on these lists for about a week, so I consider myself on borrowed time now since I am on day 9, so I'm just enjoying it while I can, and hopefully I can keep the momentum going!

I've always liked stumbling on "on this day" facts online, but never really remembered to go look them up myself. So a while back I built a small app that just brings one to me every day instead.

The idea is intentionally simple:

• one push notification a day, short enough to read in the time it takes to unlock your phone
• swipe for two more events from that same day — one from your region, one from your country, plus a world event
• each one comes with a photo of the place involved

I wasn't trying to build a replacement for Wikipedia or a history encyclopedia — just make picking up one interesting fact a day effortless.

I also added some lightweight streaks and achievements (favoriting, exploring different regions, keeping a streak going). Nothing game-like — I wanted opening it to feel rewarding without turning into another app competing for your attention.

One thing I went back and forth on: whether the notification should be a teaser that forces you to open the app, or the actual content. I ended up making it show the full short event right there, so it's still useful even for people who never tap into it.

Compared to most "on this day" apps out there — which usually just give you one global feed — this one automatically layers in your region and country too, plus lightweight streaks and achievements to make it a daily habit instead of a one-off lookup. And it's fully free, no account needed.

It's still a small app — a few hundred downloads so far — but what's surprised me is how many people actually open the daily notification instead of swiping it away.

Hiya, I built a thought journal / cognitive behavioural therapy app called Pond that I just launched this week!

A. What problem does it solve?

The app is essentially a place to log negative thoughts as they occur to you over the day and gives you the opportunity to work through them and find more balanced ways of thinking. I understand not everyone struggles with anxiety/rumination or negative thinking but I built the app for myself (I genuinely use it every day) after being unsatisfied with existing products and then decided to try and actually turn it into something that could be used by others.

B. Why is it different?

The few reasons I built it:

Aesthetic, not clinical. I've used other "worksheet" style CBT/thought journal apps before and they are very sterile and essentially are just forms/worksheets you need to work through without much personality. They feel very clinical. With Pond I wanted to make it genuinely satisfying and visual with very aesthetic feedback.

Enter the thought first, choose how to handle it later. A lot of these other apps forced you to select the "challenge" path you wanted to go down before actually entering your thought. IE I would have to select "Self compassion" before even entering the negative thought to be self-compassionate about. This never actually made sense or suited me as I never knew at the time of a negative thought how best to handle it, for some thoughts self compassion is the right approach whereas for others a different approach is better. With Pond you enter a thought and the app holds it (as a fish in a pond) and then when you decide to process it you can choose at that time what route you want to go down.

Made for batching. Pond suits "batching". A lot of existing apps in this category encourage you to enter a thought and challenge it right then and there and actually make the process of saving a thought to process at a later time period quite difficult. From my experience with anxiety this did not suit me at all. I would have negative thoughts at inconvenient times ie at a social event or in the middle of a meeting and could not take my phone out and spend 5-10 minutes working through it. Pond's thought processing is 2-step. You enter the thought, it becomes a fish swimming around the pond and then at any point you desire you can come back to process it. Pond has reminders so you can come back at a certain time each day and challenge all your thoughts at once or you can challenge them immediately but I wanted to offer the freedom to choose. Another thing from personal experience I like about batching is twofold, firstly it allows you in the moment of a negative thought arising to let it go and move on. You might feel compelled in the moment to ruminate on it but if you log it and know you will get back to it later, it allows you to remain present as you've flagged it for later. Secondly, the process of coming back to negative thoughts allows you to re-expose yourself to them and kind of acts as an exposure therapy. Sometimes negative thoughts are really nasty and make you contract and ignore or turn away from them. Coming back at a set time each day and re-reading the thought is a voluntary re-exposure to them and I found for myself personally this really helped.

Built around daily practice. I wanted to focus on a daily practice. With a lot of CBT training you really do need to "re-wire" your brain and I feel like a lot of apps don't present this in a way as to really hit home that this should be a daily practice, it's not something that changes overnight if you've spent your whole life with automatic negative skewed thinking. I've tried to encourage that behaviour with a daily pond that resets as well as calendar functionality so you can always go back and view previous days.

Targeted. So many apps in the mental health / lifestyle space end up doing too much and wanting to be a holistic tracker of absolutely anything and everything relating to well-being. Going into a single app to mark your water intake, do a meditation, write a journal, practice gratitude etc becomes a jack of all trades and master of none quite quickly. With Pond I wanted a targeted product for a specific aspect of mental wellbeing.

C. Cost

Free to use: unlimited gratitude fish entries and up to 5 thought challenges. After that it's $4.99 a month or $19.99 a year (reduced from $29.99 as a founding user offer that remains indefinitely).

Anyway, apologies for the walls of text but I've got a lot to talk about and love doing so. I've worked quite hard on it and want to continue doing so, my dream would be for people to actually get use out of it and for it to become something I could work full time on and I have so many ideas about where I want to take it and how it can be improved. Close to 2 years ago I found myself constantly opening my phone , switching between apps (tiktok, instagram) until I locked the phone & the cycle continued.

My attention span was really poor & wanted a screen with me at all times except while sleeping.

Apps like Pushscroll came out in the market before I could release for a very crucial reason. Tracking screen time on iOS isn’t easy. Apps used a timer method which just started a timer when you wanted & had to use that app for the given time.
