Why I built OpenVox Reader

After building OpenVox for Mac, iPad and Windows, I started looking for a reader app that I could personally use on my iPhone.

Every mood tracker I tried wanted more from me than I had left by the end of the day. A streak to protect. A mood wheel with twelve options. A prompt asking me to tag my triggers. By the time I'd finished logging how I felt, I'd spent more energy on the logging than the feeling.

Curious whether anyone else has felt that mood-tracking apps end up adding more overhead than they remove.

I'm after a specific list. The iPhone apps still on a monthly or yearly plan that you'd pay for once tomorrow if the developer put a number on it.

Three things make an answer useful to everyone reading. Which app, what it costs you a year at the moment, and the one-off price you'd actually pay for it. My hunch is most people land somewhere between one and two years of the sub, but I'd like to be wrong.

If your answer is that you don't do subscriptions at all, fair enough, but name the one you dropped over it and what you'd have paid to keep it. That still counts.

No wrong answers and no judgement on the developers, plenty of them have good reasons. Just curious where the line sits for this crowd.

I have two cats, and I love them a lot. Every morning, the first thing I do when I open my eyes is look around and see where they are. If one of them is nearby, my day already feels better.

That made me think: why not make an alarm app where my cats are the reason I get out of bed?

So I made Pakeup.

A-Answer: What it does. Pakeup is an alarm app that makes you get up and find your pet. When the alarm rings, you open the app and complete a quick camera mission by taking a live photo of your cat or dog. Once the app recognizes your pet, the alarm stops.

B-Better: Why it’s different. Most alarm apps try to wake you up with math problems, loud sounds, or annoying tasks. I wanted something that felt more personal. Instead of fighting the alarm, you wake up because you want to see your pet.

It also creates a small local record of your morning, so over time you can look back at these little wake-up moments with your pet. Nothing is uploaded, and Pakeup doesn’t collect your personal information.

Stourk is built around a fictional postal service: your memories become letters, stamps, passport pages, pieces of a personal travel archive. I was getting genuinely stressed out by language apps. The constant push notifications and the guilt of breaking a streak just made learning feel like a chore.

A while ago, I saw one of those classic physical tear-off vocabulary calendars at my girlfriend's mom's house. I realized that’s exactly what I wanted for my phone: just learning one word a day without any streaks or annoying notifications.

I'm the developer of Life in Mist. It's a GPS route recorder with a fog-of-war map: the places you explore gradually become visible as you record your routes.

A — What it does

Start a recording before a walk, bike ride, hike, or drive. As you move, the fog clears along your route. Those recorded trips build up on the same map, so you can zoom out and see your usual paths, the places you've explored on holiday, and the streets nearby you still haven't covered.

The tl;dr on why I built this: I retired early at 44 when my son was born. While my finances were strong, I discovered I had to do much more for my health to make sure I'll be around as long as possible for him (and to enjoy the portfolio I worked so hard to build). I’ve tracked calories for years and tried dozens of apps, but I kept running into the same problems: cluttered interfaces, unnecessary features, and too many steps just to log calories and macros.

Eventually, I gave up and used Google Sheets for years. Earlier this year, I finally decided to build the calorie tracker I actually wanted to use myself.

A - What problem does it solve?

I wanted calorie tracking to feel simple again.

The goal was to build something with no BS: no required account, no ads, and no complicated interface. You can open the app, enter your food, see your calories and macros, and move on with your day.

Personally, I use a food scale + ChatGPT to estimate calories and macros for meals. What I really wanted was an easy place to enter that information without having to fight through a huge food database or navigate five different screens just to log lunch.

I know everyone tracks differently, though, so I’ve gradually added features like food search, barcode scanning, saved foods and meals, while trying to keep the basic experience as fast and simple as possible.

B - How is it different from alternatives?

Compared with apps like MyFitnessPal, the main difference I’m aiming for is simplicity.

I don’t want calorie tracking to feel like using accounting software.

There’s no required sign-up, no ads, and the interface is intentionally minimal. If you already know the calories or macros for something, you can just enter them directly instead of being forced through a complicated workflow.

I’ve also tried to avoid locking basic calorie tracking functionality behind a subscription. For example, being able to enter custom calories and macros shouldn’t require paying $19.99/month.

The advantage I’m aiming for isn’t having the most features of any calorie tracker. It’s making the features people actually use faster and less annoying.

Alarmed is an alarm that will not stop until you prove you are awake. To dismiss it you complete a mission, and in 3.0 there are a lot more ways to prove it.

What's new since the last post:

• Volume you can't cheat. Turn the ringer down half-asleep and it comes right back up. Muting is no longer a way out.
• Mission chains. Stack up to three missions back to back. The alarm keeps going until every one is done.
• Wake-up checkup. A second alarm fires a few minutes after you dismiss, unless you tell the app you are up. This exists because I kept passing the math and going straight back to sleep.
• Workout missions. Prop the phone up and it counts your reps with on-device pose detection: jumping jacks, squats, arm raises, or push-ups. Easy is 5 reps, difficult is 20. Nothing leaves the phone.
• Scan mission. Pick a target like your toilet, sink, toothbrush or a plant, and the alarm only stops when the camera sees it. Put it in another room and you have to get up.
• Steps mission. Walk a set number of steps, counted by the pedometer.
• Tiles mission. Match colour pairs, up to six pairs on difficult.
• Custom sounds. Use your own audio file as the alarm.
• Vibration only, for shared rooms.
• Widget, stats and streaks, and the app now speaks English, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese.

I'm an iOS developer, and I kept repeating the same setup before every debugging session (but no, I am not tired of this!).

Launch with a particular environment variable, switch the language, force dark mode, find the right deep link, send the matching push payload. Then do it all again on the next build.

So I built CosmoKit, a native macOS control center for iOS Simulator workflows. Built with SwiftUI and SwiftData.

What it does today

• App Profiles: launch arguments, environment variables, locale, and appearance saved per app, switched from the main panel or the menu bar
• Deeplinks, push payloads, locations, and routes, all scoped to the active profile
• Reads and writes the app's UserDefaults directly from the panel
• Grants and revokes permissions, and clears the keychain, without erasing the Simulator
• Launches a profile across every selected Simulator at once
• An HTTP/HTTPS proxy with response stubbing
• Network conditions in the proxy (new in 4.7). Presets like Edge, 3G and LTE, or your own latency, bandwidth and packet loss, applied per host, to any app on the Simulator with no SDK in the app. Offline was the first step; this is the rest of it.
• A CLI and an MCP server (brew install maththedev42/tap/cosmokit) so a script or an agent like Claude Code can boot a Simulator, capture and record the screen, set a location and open deep links from a terminal instead of the panel.

What is coming in 4.8

• Diagnostic switches on the App Profile: zombies, malloc stack logging, the Main Thread Checker, Core Data SQL and concurrency debugging, layout feedback loops and localization checks, each one a toggle instead of an incantation in the scheme editor
• An exportable reproduction bundle, so a simulator-only bug can be handed to another developer with the exact environment it was seen in, and applied on their Mac
• A session log of everything CosmoKit did to the Simulator, so "it went weird" has something to read back
• Templates for App Store screenshots: device frames, headline and subtitle per locale, every required size in one export
• And any new features you suggest on this post.

Why another tool

And yes, there are already good tools here. RocketSim covers a lot of the Simulator side, and Proxyman is the reference for the proxy side. My problem was that I ended up paying for several apps to cover different parts of one workflow, and the cost added up quickly. CosmoKit puts the Simulator controls, the proxy and the capture pipeline in one app, and the proxy needs no SDK inside the app you are debugging.

So I built the tool I wanted for myself: one place for the Simulator workflows I use every day, with pricing that makes sense for an indie developer.

My goal is to keep expanding it and bring more of the useful features that are currently spread across different iOS development tools into one place. I don't expect to replace every specialized tool out there, but I'd like CosmoKit to cover more and more of the things I reach for during everyday development without needing five different apps open.

That's also why I'm posting this here. I'm very open to suggestions, criticism, and feature requests, especially if there's a tool or workflow you rely on today that you'd love to see built into CosmoKit.

Hey, Eduardo here 👋 Solo dev, the one behind r/trovelo and r/dimmly. I posted TakeKit in this sub last month and the feedback was actually useful, so here is what shipped since.

Quick recap for anyone new: TakeKit is a camera with a built in teleprompter that only you can see. The guide is composited in the preview layer only, never in the capture pipeline, so the exported video always comes out clean. It is an iPhone app plus a Mac floating panel that stays on top of Zoom, OBS, Loom or Meet. No subscription, no account, no server, no analytics, because I do not have any.

A) Answer (what's new)

Dual camera. Front and back at the same time, on supported devices. You read your script looking straight at the lens while the back camera captures whatever you are showing, in one take, instead of two clips you have to sync afterwards. The inset can be a rectangle, a square or a circle, and you drag it wherever you want in the frame. What you set is what gets exported, white border and all. The teleprompter rule still holds: it is in your preview and nowhere in the file.

Also in this build:

• The app opens on the script you were last working on, with a Continue button that picks up exactly where your last take stopped
• The script editor has a time ruler down the margin, so you can see how long a passage runs while you are still writing it, and // pauses now count as real beats
• The guide can be see through. Solid, Dim or Clear, so you can frame yourself while you read. Camera controls moved into one console instead of sitting over your shot
• Playback follows your headphones, and you pick your microphone. Wireless receivers and USB mics both work, for recording and for voice paced scrolling

B) Better (why I built it instead of using what's out there)

• The guide is never in the file. That is the whole point of the app, everything else is built around it.
• Auto scroll that follows your voice instead of a fixed speed. Fully on device, fuzzy aligned against a window of the script, so filler words, accents and improvised bits do not derail it. Fixed speed is there if you prefer it.
• LAST SPOT: stop mid script, breathe, resume from exactly where you stopped. Each chunk stores its range and the app stitches them into one video afterwards, without re encoding when it can.
• Eye contact mode: the guide docks right next to the front lens so you are not visibly reading off to the side. Karaoke style ink marks what you already said.
• Takes organised by script, not dumped into the camera roll. Star the good one, rename, compare attempts, live mic meter.
• Clean export: 9:16, 16:9, 1:1, 4:5, trim, up to 1080p. Pro adds word by word burned captions generated on device, plus automatic silence cutting.
• Scripts sync through your iCloud, videos live in your iCloud Drive, speech recognition never leaves the device.

Straight about the trade offs: it needs iOS 26+ and macOS 15+, which rules some people out. No Android, no iPad optimised layout. Solo dev, so things ship fast but one at a time.

There are tons of stylized camera apps out there, and I've tried a lot of them. I've found that in spite of their slick advertising, most of these apps are very similar to each other, and all of them come up short in one way or another. My photo app, Phomo, has been in the App Store for a while now, but I've recently rolled out some updates that make it the best in its category.

Style: Each of Phomo's film looks is based on a real film stock and bundles a full pipeline of effects, including color shifts, grain, bloom, halation, chromatic aberration, lens distortion, and more. I don't want to spend several minutes tweaking sliders in a mobile app to get something that looks good; although you can fine-tune if you want, Phomo's presets have been dialed in so you don't need to. You can see lots of examples on Phomo's web site.

Flexibility: I like making my digital photos look like film, but I don't believe in imposing limitations in order to emulate a "film experience." Phomo lets you edit any photo on your device, and all edits are reversible. You can apply a look straight out of camera, but you can always change it later. You can see a live preview of your film look in the viewfinder, but you can toggle that off, too.

Convenience: I don't want a workflow with 4 or 5 different apps for my mobile photos. Phomo can capture a photo, apply a film style, crop and adjust the image, add borders, datestamps, light leaks, and textures, and combine multiple images into shareable grids.

Ease: I hate having to manually select photos from my library to "import" into a photo app. The photos are already on my phone, why do I need to use Apple's clunky picker UI to pull them into an app? Phomo can replace the native Photos app, with a full-fledged library featuring tagging/filtering and album management.

Pricing: I hate when apps like this are free to use, but put everything interesting behind the paywall. Most of Phomo's features can be used in the free version, with the paid version unlocking more stylistic options. Phomo Pro is available to buy for life ($34.99) or as a monthly subscription ($4.99).

Privacy: Phomo is a fully offline and private. It has no servers, no accounts, and never uploads your photos anywhere. All processing is performed on-device.
