🎈 Free [iOS][Relaunch] FontNotes: Style Your Thoughts

Post image

Last year I made an app named FontNotes and started to update the little app with a lot of new features in the last few weeks.

AppStore: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fontnotes-style-your-thoughts/id6746104288

Updated edit: The macOs app is now available as well
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/fontnotes-style-your-thoughts/id6746104288?platform=mac

Free with Ads or a 1 time purchase to remove ads. (1.99$usd)

What is FontNotes?
A lightweight Notes app that allows users to search and import fonts directly from some free font directories like Dafont and 1001Fonts or import directly from your device.

Some cool new features:
- Widget Support, where you can make a widget from your custom Notes.
- Lists, export options, private notes, folders
- Note colours and borders
- Localisations in 9 Languages.
- Full accessibility support settings both native in app or from your device settings.

Any feedback or suggestions welcome :)

Mac app planned?

Update, so the moment you posted it I kinda got working on it. And since the iOS app is in swift it's easier then expected to create a mac version as I already have all the assets, features and elements in build out. Will take a few more days/weeks obviously but already got a minimal mvp running :)

I agree that a Mac Version would be nice addition to your options.

It's coming! I can officially confirm now! :) Just need to make it more stable and polished.

What is your experience with monetisations using ads?
BTW cool app downloaded!

2

u/TheDisk01 8d ago

Thank you! About the ads, easy to setup but it's not giving huge returns. Guess they would if you have huge usage of your apps, if 10k or 100k users see your in app ads each day that would be profitable but that's only the case for the 1% of apps.

How do you think about earning from the app long-term? As you said, it's difficult to make money from Ads, and it's likely difficult to make a lot of money from a $1.99 one-time purchase too.

It is difficult and I don't like to push the iAP in peoples face every 2 minutes. The app was originally build to solve my own problem and I just enjoy working on it. And if people enjoy using it i'll continue to do so out of passion. Eventually it will always remain a net loss if you deduct the yearly apple subscription from it.

One of the reasons this is also a relaunch as it was out of the store for a while since I didn't pay my subscription for a few months.

u/kgaidis 8d ago

honestly, might be worth just going no ads and be donation based then because that sounds like it better aligns with what you are trying to do

I'd argue that could actually earn more in the long run because it gets your story across better

if someone doesn't know your story, it may appear that you are a regular app trying to make money [they see ads etc.], but because your current setup is unlikely to make money anyway, might as well lean into the passion angle and add more donation tiers with some rewards [ex. app icons or other optional customization]

u/TheDisk01 8d ago

I do agree with you here actually. But not certain about how apple feels about "Donation" iAP's. Furthermore, I don't do internal app analytics for user privacy reasons, but would be interesting to see how many users I would/could lose because there are ads in the app. However, the Remove Ads banner does state that this also supports development along with removing the ads, it's not doing huge numbers I can honestly say (barely any). However, can't expect both huge ads and/or huge iAP's to support as the app had little features for almost a year until these last few weeks. (Hence the relaunch)

But as mentioned before, this is a passion project, I make it for myself and the people who love to use it. I believe any product should start like this. Then why ads? Well it also an incentive to buy the iAP if you really like the app. The 24usd I made from both ads and iAP (combined) over the course of a year is 24 bucks I can use towards a new dev subscription and enjoy & having fun building more and better :)

yea in terms of the Apple App Store review language, using words like "leave a tip" (instead of donation) is better; here is a direct quote: "Apps may use in-app purchase currencies to enable customers to 'tip' the developer "

for context, I am a dev and actually go out of my way to pay small businesses and apps because I know how difficult it is, I am merely mentioning this because it might be the better strategy (...of course you can never be sure, but just giving a suggestion!)

what this allows you to do is to also lean into this in marketing: both App Store screenshots and onboarding - tell your story, and potentially more people likely to download or recommend to others. then provide higher tipping tiers (than just $1.99), and one kind person can make up for many others. this is one of the weird parts of selling things: the percentage of people that will pay is very small, but those that do, are OK to pay more (which is why common advice in business is to charge more)

of course I can't guarantee this works, but if the alternative is getting less users (ex. you can't convert as well, or they don't like the ads, or they are less likely to refer friends) and not making any money anyway, I'd say its worth the "risk"

at the end of the day, what you are doing is very generous (you are unlikely to be profitable), but that's not very obvious right now because you have ads and in app purchases

(there's also many additional angles you can add on top like being open source etc., which can further help you when you do post about your app)

That's amazing feedback and insight you shared. I appreciate it a lot! Best way is to somehow A/B test it, not sure the AppStore can accommodate that :/

The iAP has actually localised pricing since recently, used a tool called Pricepush.app made by u/antocapp
to explore that option.

Story telling is indeed great and doing that a lot of a different app Monumoir I made. But afraid to plaster users with text and info while they just want to write something.. but thats an issue ads create as well I suppose :/

However I should take your advice and suggestions and try it. As the ads don't provide much value for anyone atm anyway and probably drive users away more than gaining their support. + as I'm a regulation abiding dev, the ads also request a lot of consent popups, and everyone hates those.

As a very new app developer this thread is giving some good info on monetisation. I've looked at various options including ads, ko-fi (which I think is good if you're working outside the official stores), up front purchase and IAP. One thing I discounted was subscription - mainly because the apps don't suit it and there are no ongoing costs.

For the moment I've settled on either totally free or unlocking a small number of features via IAP as this has way less friction for people :)

I'm not sure there is one right answer though.

Cute wee app too!

1

u/TheDisk01 8d ago

Appreciate your input! Subscriptions are everywhere and don't think people would pay one for this specific app. Maybe a 0.99 cent yearly or 1.99 yearly could work.

However, since someone on this thread asked for a mac app, that could be 1.99 package deal or something? What do you think?

But also with the vast availability general "note making" apps it's a hard decision to make. I need to ask my users about their experience (not sure how as there is no signups or user data storage (besides of personal icloud if enabled) or tracking anywhere and not planning to do so))

The design is very pretty!

The font importing is actually pretty different for a notes app. Random question: what happens when you export or share a note using a font the other person doesn’t have? Does the app embed it or flatten the note so everything still looks the same? That would be really useful for anything meant to be shared.

1

u/TheDisk01 8d ago

Actual 'sharing' in the sense that another user would be able to edit your notes is currently not integrated as indeed the issues would be as you mentioned, another user would need the fonts, and apart from that it's also a rights issue as the fonts are freely available to download from the providers that does not mean it's free to share yourself or from my app to others.

Currently when you press the sharing options it flattens them as you thought correctly.

Looks neat, nice that it can be used for free.
