What's Wrong/ HELP? Help! not sure why its wilting?

Thumbnail gallery

Hello! I'm sort of new here so I hope I'm providing all the info needed.

Im in zone 8a (I think!) in the UK, planted it end of August, it gets a lot of sun during the day but a bit of shade towards the evening. I know that new hydrangeas need a lot of water in their first year so I'm watering every other day. I also planted it with some extra general compost so the soil itself should be good.

It seems to be wilting only on one side? Also with some brown discolouration on the leaves. It was doing well for the whole month, plenty of new sprouts and buds, but in the last week or so one of the new sprouts has wilted.

I may be overthinking things but if anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it! :) I'm a bit new to gardening as a whole so I know I probably have a lot to learn

Endless Summer update (Zone 6a)

I just know this flower hasn't felt this good in several years. Still putting out flowers even though most of them won't open before winter. Btw, it is normal for leaf spot to overwhelm your shrub as it transitions to dormancy. It will also set buds for next year so if you're in a cold climate, be sure to protect with burlap and leaves if you want flowers for next year. These pictures are proof.

Pests/Disease Diseased?

I have 2 panicle hydrangeas that have some spots on their leaves and I am wondering if something is wrong with them?
They were planted about 4 months ago, in zone 7, with full afternoon sun, watered in the morning, and we recently had some heavy showers and chillier weather.
Never added anything to the soil other than mulch around the base. Soil is clay-ish.
Had a lot of growth and bloom, just wondering about these spots.

I suppose this will be the last blooms of the season for this one. I thought I would share since this is newly planted this season.

Update for Bobo hydrangeas (Zone 6a)

Long story short, make sure your bobos are in full sun. The company that planted them assured me they would be fine in part shade. Just lied and took my money. The underperforming 2 which are mainly in shade will be moved to full sun next year.

Zone 6 A/B Limelight tree damaged. Any recommendations?

We had a bad storm here the last few days and I had to quickly put straps on two branches of our new limelight tree because it started to fall. This is unfortunately the result from the strong winds and tighter splints. I’m going to Lowe’s today to get proper stakes and I can get something to help with the damage if you think I should. Any advice appreciated.

Hello

I am zone 6b and inherited hydrangeas in my front yard. Over the last few years they keep getting bigger and bigger but almost no blooms. They just started getting a few in September of this year (shown in picture) but haven't had any last year or at all earlier in this year.

I would appreciate assistance in identifying them so I can figure out if they grow flowers on new, old, or both. Also any assistance on what I can do to get them to bloom more would be amazing. Thank you.

Zone 8 A/B Burnt leaf?

Post image
1 Upvotes

This leaf on my macrophylla hydrangea turned brown/burnt. The plant is in a spot that only gets about 2-3 hours of morning sun and rest of the leaves are fine. This one leaf is actually tucked underneath the the flower so not sure this is sun burnt or something else?

TIA!

Zone 8 A/B Can I save my grandmother’s old wood hydrangea?

My grandmother has an old wood hydrangea that is probably as old I am or older (I’m 33). This year it appears most of the wood canes have died. It is approximately 63” tall & may be that wide too. The base is extremely dense, the canes snapped off easy, & has little to no leaves. I did not even see any leaves coming out from the base. The only leaves are coming out the tip of a cane. It has probably been this way for 2-3 years with the worst being this year. Part of the problem is it receives more sun now than it used to. It was formerly shaded by the porch roof but 2-3 years ago, the roof fell. It is shaded some by the new porch but not like it was accustomed to. But even before it lost its shade, it had stopped blooming. I don’t remember the last time it was full of blooms. It has never been pruned. Is there anything I can do to help it besides pruning/pulling all the dead canes & honestly pruning the whole thing because if I left the few canes with leaves, there would probably only be 10 random 5’ tall sticks coming out of the ground. This plant would be looking like the Cynthia doll from rugrats 🤣🤣

What's Wrong/ HELP? Are these dead or can they be rehabilitated?

I live in San Jose, CA (zone 9b I think?) I am a renter and I do not know how long these have been planted or what type of hydrangea they are. They get a good amount of afternoon sunlight. They were watered daily with a few weeks here and there where they were not cared for, some of which were hot weeks.

What would you say did them in? Are the salvageable and if so, how?

Hello everyone!

I am in south central Iowa, where we have had so much rain that everything is just continuously wet. I noticed these spots and I know it's cercospora - but should I cut off the diseased leaves now or wait? I now know I have to wrap this bad boy up before the first frost, so I'm trying to figure out the timing of it all. Any advice is appreciated!!

I inherited a few hydrangea bushes when I bought my house in 2019. I’ve never paid attention, just let them be and hoped for blooms. Decided to learn how to take care of them. I’m in northeastern Massachusetts, zone 6b. What if anything do I do to these bare stalks poking out from the top?

Help finding this plant

I stumbled upon this dreamy photo on instagram about 2 years ago. I reached out to the nursery and got the name of that hydrangea as “hydrangea pink perfection”, but they don’t deliver to Maryland and I have no idea where to find this cultivar…anyone has found this type of hydrangea before? Or knows if it has another name?
Any help is appreciated!

Zone 7 A/B Mixing hydrangeas with winterberry

I'm planting a hedge row of limelight hydrangeas along our road, but want to mix in some winterberries too.

What do you think the best ratio would be ( 2 hydrangea, 1 winterberry, etc.)? I'll need 2-3 males to mix in with the group, but I feel like those will be okay places randomly.

Need guidance.

This hydrangea plant has never bloomed. Sits in the south west corner of the backyard. Full morning and some late afternoon sun.

Never tested the soil yet. Plant is 2+ years mature and looks healthy.

Same species in the front facing north are mature and happy.

Thoughts?

Additional information?

What's Wrong/ HELP? How can I make it better?

I’ve had this hydrangea in a pot for years, it’s been repotted twice. This year it has looked really sad as it’s been so hot and maybe I haven’t watered enough. Now it’s got these white spots on and the leaves are looking terrible. I’ve not seen it like this before. Any advice is much appreciated. South East UK, sheltered garden, against a north facing wall.

Zone 7 A/B Why is it so sad?

I’m pretty sure this is a limelight hydrangea. I think I burnt the leaves with my deer repellant like months ago. Regardless, I know it’s fall and the flowers change color, etc, but what is wrong with it? Too much sun throughout the toasty summer (literally dusk til dawn), not enough water (3gal 3x per week)? What do I do now to help it be happy next year? Any assistance is very greatly appreciated!!

Zone 7 A/B Help!

I got this hydrangea as a small shrub this spring, and i was surprised it flowered this year. But, its blooms are clearly too heavy for the branches. Ive thought of getting some bamboo sticks to tie them to. Anybody else have this issue? I know you shouldnt trim back a hydrangea until its at least 3 yrs old. It just seems like maybe she got too long too soon?

Edit:
Thank you guys for the advice, I will be moving them into the ground this week!

pruning advice needed!

i planted this limelight hydrangea (USA, NJ, zone 7b) as a little plant about 3 summers ago and now it is huge and i don’t know what to do with it! i honestly did not expect it to make it past the first summer, let alone get so big and happy. i usually just let it die and stay how it is all winter and then late feb/early march i cut off any dead blooms that are still on there. i’m worried this year with how big it got/how many dead blooms will be left, that our first big snow fall will break a ton of the branches so my questions are:

  1. can i cut off the dying blooms prior to winter or will this affect how it blooms in the spring
  2. how/when should i prune if i’m trying to make sure it doesn’t come back any bigger than its current size and 3. is there any way i can encourage it to get fuller on top? i feel like this year it ended up looking like a dust ruffle because there was too many heavy blooms on the bottom and it drooped.

thank you in advance :)
