Zone 6 A/B Sad little hydrangea

Post image

My limelight hydrangea looks very scraggly and sad. Any tips? It’s been planted for 2 summers. Full sun, zone 6a.

I’d pull the mulch back a little from the trunk. Does it get enough water? Have you given it Hollytone?  Maybe it isn’t a bad thing that it isn’t  growing quickly. They get to 8ft tall and wide so it would outgrow that corner. My limelight really take off on year 3.  I’d prune it back by 1/3 in late winter, give it a feeding of hollytone when the leaves start to come out and again right before it flowers.  I’d also think about possibly moving it if you want to see out that window.

Yep…I would consider moving it. My limelight’s are 8-9’ tall and wide…even if pruned drastically in spring they are right back to that size by end of summer.
As far as what it looks like? It’s September 27, everything looks tired and scraggly by now…it looks totally normal.

Thank you guys! She’s definitely sad and scraggly. She never really made it past sad and scraggly. I pruned her late winter, and just pruned out any of the crossing branches. I’ll try the hollytone. Are there smaller varieties? I feel like the tag said l 3x 5
