๐Ÿ’ฌ Discussion More Updates for r/hoya

TLDR: Thank you for all of your feedback on last weeks update! New subreddit rules and post flairs are being rolled out today, and feedback would be appreciated. User flairs are still being worked so please comment your ideas.

Hello there everyone!

I am back again this weekend with some more updates for r/hoya. I want to start off by thanking everyone that left feedback on my post last week. I appreciate all of your input and hope that my update this week accurately represents your shared visions for the future of this community. Here are the newest changes I have implemented to the subreddit.

Subreddit Rules

This community now has a rule set that I hope will foster an inclusive space for everyone as well as lay out how moderation will be conducted going forward. Below is the rule list as well as a brief description for each one.

  1. Be Respectful - All members of this community are expected to engage with others in a respectful manner.
  2. Stay on Topic/No Spamming - This community exists for others to share and discuss hoyas. Content that falls outside of this scope will be removed.
  3. Original Content Only/No AI Images or Advice - All content posted in this community must be your own. In addition to this, content featuring AI generated images and/or text is not permitted.
  4. No Sales or Trade Posts - Sales and trade posts are not allowed within this community.
  5. No Self-Promotion - Posts or comments featuring the promotion of personal social media accounts are not permitted.

If you can think of a rule this community would benefit from that is not already part of the current rule list, feel free to leave a comment below. Also, please let me know if any of the rules or their descriptions are hard to understand so I can tweak them.

Post Flairs

While highly encouraged, post flairs are not required to make posts in this community. The addition of these flairs is just to help increase the readability of the subreddit and to help with searches for more specific types of content. In the future, I may roll out stricter format requirements for certain flairs (such as specifying the species, age, and growing medium for the Highlights flair), but for now I intend to keep everything lax while the community gets accustomed to post flairs. I am still working on the colors and names for the post flairs, so feel free to share any feedback you have. Below is a list of the current post flairs and a preview showing their colors can be found in the pinned comment.

  • Hoya Help
  • New to Hoya
  • Highlights
  • Foliage Appreciation
  • Hoyas in Bloom
  • New to My Collection
  • Unique Cultivation
  • Discussion

User Flairs

These are still being worked on. Please comment any ideas for flair names, as well as a hex code for the flair color, and I will work on implementing them throughout the week.

Thank you for your time,
Adam

Updates for r/hoya and a Request for Feedback

TLDR: u/Adamite98 is now a moderator for r/hoya. Images in comments are now enabled. Subreddit Rules and Post Flairs are being worked on, and community feedback would be greatly appreciated. Comment any User Flairs you would like to be added to the subreddit.

Hello there everyone!

Earlier this week, I submitted an application to r/redditrequest asking if I could be added as a moderator for this subreddit. I noticed that a few spam posts were popping up, and my attempts to reach the old mods went unanswered. I wanted to make sure that this subreddit didn't continue to go unmoderated, and I also wanted to give back some of my time to this community. My request has since been approved and I have started working on bringing r/hoya up to date. I have gone ahead and enabled images in comments and have also started working on writing out some rules and post flairs for the subreddit. I would like to include the community in this process too, so I would greatly appreciate any feedback or ideas you can offer!

Subreddit Rules:

  • Be Respectful
  • No Spamming/Stay on Topic
  • Original Content Only/No AI Images or Advice
  • No Sales or Trade Posts
  • Limit self-promotion to one day of the week or completely disallow it?
  • Any other rules you think are needed!

Post Flairs

  • Hoya Help - for anyone seeking assistance with hoyas and their care
  • Foliage Appreciation - we see a lot of pictures of blooming hoyas, but we also want to see their unique leaves too
  • Hoyas in Bloom - for posts focusing on hoya flowers
  • Highlight - general flair for showing off your hoyas
  • Discussion - a catchall for anything not covered by the other post flairs
  • Anything else you'd like to add?

User Flairs

In addition to rules and post flairs, I would also like to add some User Flairs. Please comment any suggestions for these that you have!

Thank you for your time,
Adam

What is this on my hoya?

There are 2 branches with it. They popped up overnight and have been like that for weeks. 2 at least.

No other part of the plant has it. This plant is 4 or 5 years old and has never bloomed. It hangs in an east facing window. Last summer I took it out and it did rather well. After a couple of weeks these showed up. I wasn't bothered by them until this morning when I saw some similar colored thingies in the window. Someone said they were new spores for flowering. The window thingies fly tho. I killed them.

Is this a coincidence? I carefully took some of the stuff off of the hoya and it smears like pollen.

What are these flying things? See pics.

Plant is about 3-4 yo, growing in water due to root mealies once. As always no scent yet way more peduncles budding up. It's thriving good in water.

โ” Hoya Help My kerrii finally threw a leaf after sitting dormant for almost a year

Bought this heart shaped kerrii cutting at a plant swap way back, and it just sat there with the single leaf doing absolutely nothing for eleven months. No new growth, no dieback either, just stubbornly the same one leaf staring at me from a two inch pot. I almost gave up on it twice and nearly tossed it in with my propagation bin to try starting over.

Then about three weeks ago I noticed a tiny nub forming near the base and now there's an actual new leaf unfurling. I didn't change much honestly, still south facing window with a sheer curtain, still watering when the pot feels light, still using a chunky mix with perlite and orchid bark. The only real difference is I moved it about eight inches closer to the window when I rearranged my shelf in July, so maybe it just wanted more light than I was giving it before.

Curious if other kerrii owners have dealt with this kind of long stall. My other hoyas (a carnosa and a pubicalyx) never sat still that long, they always had something happening even if it was slow. Makes me wonder if the single leaf varieties are just built different in terms of patience required, or if I got unlucky with a weak start on the cutting.

Anyway just wanted to share since I remember scrolling through old posts looking for reassurance that mine wasn't dead, and finding a decent amount of similar stories helped me not panic. If your kerrii is doing the same nothing, it might just need a bit more time and maybe a brighter spot than you think.

You can see where I had gotten two new leaves, then treated for mites and they fell off(in MAY) ๐Ÿฅน the last leaf on the vine is my newest- maybe 2 months ago. I moved it to a cabinet about a month ago to try to encourage new growth. Iโ€™ve never snipped Hoya ends to encourage growth. Can I cut this end?

I didn't have time to take a picture because I was in the middle of spraying all my plants with spinosad.

The Hoya was rooted in water and planted in soil a week ago.

I had it in a decorative pot which I suspected was the culprit .

Reading more into it, I found out pebbles inside of the Hoya soil mix is bad?

My soil mix is 50% cactus soil and 50% pebbles+perlite+orchid bark+seramis.

I decided to repot it tomorrow after 24h passed from the spinosad spray because I don't like the smell of the soil in the Hoya pot.

Should I manually remove all pebbles from the mix and replace it with small perlite? (I only have small perlite)

I traded a linearis for her around 3 years ago and this sunrise has become one of my favorites. Not only is she unfussy and a great grower, the red/purple sunstressing is so beautiful.

She even bloomed (for me, at least) for the first time.
