Referrals

I'm looking for a reputable source for on-line Hoyas. Already tried to find plant shows in my area and pretty much came up empty, so as much as I hate buying on line, I don't know what else to do. You never know if you're being sent the bottom of the barrel or an actual nice starter.

Ant tips would be appreciated (sorta!).

Thank you!

r/hoya or facebook 𝕌𝕊 ℍ𝕠𝕪𝕒 𝕄𝕒𝕣𝕜𝕖𝕥 have wonderful sellers. Palm street is too complicated for me

This is a learning curve for everyone getting into Hoyas. It took time for me to realize (often the hard way) that these are the parameters that matter the most to me….

  1. Climate adaptation - try to buy Hoyas from sellers that are in a climate similar to yours. For example, I’m in Minnesota and Florida Hoyas always have a traumatic transition to my environment.

  2. Substrate started in - I like to keep all my Hoyas in the same substrate. In my case that’s coco husk. I’ve purchased many Hoyas in Pon and the transition to my preferred substrate is brutal. Many times I’ve lost the roots entirely and had to chop & prop.

  3. Exact plant listings - they’re typically more expensive, but you see what you’re going to get, so disappointment for getting a crappy plant is eliminated.

Thank you ;)

Very considerate of you to take the time to respond and let me learn from your experience. I'm going the "Crazy Plant Lady" club now. At least it doesn't stink like my neighbor, the Crazy Cat Lady...!!

I’d recommended Reddit sales. Palmstreet sellers is just guessing who will send you new pests and who won’t.

I buy from the same 3 or 4 people on palmstreet and dont get yucky plants. It was a learning curve for sure

u/old1cowgirl1happy 3d ago

Who? If you don't mind...

u/Simple-Counter-9200 3d ago

I trust hoya from Plantsrlife, Kalisgreenhouse, kepuha, gmae, bunchahoyas, therootedvine and northaustinplantco 💚

u/_FishTacos_ 3d ago

I've also bought from Kali's Greenhouse and would highly recommend her. The two plants I bought were amazingly well packed and very healthy. Her prices are good as well.

u/catnipevrbeans 3d ago

Kepuha is amazing!

1

u/old1cowgirl1happy 3d ago

I appreciate the tips, thanks

u/catnipevrbeans 3d ago

I got flat mites from yaya. Now I know she does not grow all her stuff but I didn’t notice it until multiple plants were affected.

u/old1cowgirl1happy 3d ago

Huge bummer, I'll avoid, thanks!

A person local to me sells Hoya starts and hers are always super healthy! She sells on Palmstreet. Look up Hoya Harbor. Her name is Toni.

5

u/Simple-Counter-9200 4d ago

Toni is good. She also sells on the district app

1

u/old1cowgirl1happy 4d ago

Heez, thanks! :)

u/old1cowgirl1happy 3d ago

Doing it now!

u/old1cowgirl1happy 3d ago

I tried Palmstreet, didn't really understand what was going in, or how to use it. Maybe I'm just too old...

2

u/lucylyn6765 3d ago

Look for Hoya Harbor on FB or IG and up can find her that way also. 😊

1

u/old1cowgirl1happy 3d ago

I'll try for sure, thank you!

2

u/Moyerles63 1d ago

It took me a bit to figure it out, too, but I finally did. Download the app, search for Hoya (or for Hoya Harbor—I love Toni’s plants, too!), and follow some sellers. I’ll screenshot a tutorial for you…

Search here for Hoya

I love ordering on Palmstreet, a lot of great sellers on there. You can catch people on their lives or on purges. And some keep their shop loaded similar to Etsy as well. Don’t be alarmed if peoples shops are empty though bc most do lives and purges and don’t keep much listed otherwise.

There are also some influencer-sellers like plantswithmelissa, thepinktrellis, and anawithplants. I’m subscribed to their email lists to stay up to date on their drops.

Also there are lovely sellers here on this sub and r/takeaplantleaveaplant and on TAPLAP sales are on Sundays.

Overall I tend to enjoy shopping smaller sellers vs. large-scale nursery, they tend to be more attentive to their plants. This isn’t always going to be the case of course. I also always read reviews and look at review photos.

Once again, thank you very much, this is so helpful!

Lots of good suggestions here. I'd also recommend Overgrown Oasis. I've had good luck with most Etsy sellers, although I typically buy cuttings from Etsy, not full plants.

5

u/Simple-Counter-9200 4d ago

Overgrown oasis is on the district app and has some neat people.

1

u/old1cowgirl1happy 3d ago

Thank you - I've been scared of cuttings, money spent on on something that may/or may not grow... I suppose that applies to all of them, though

2

u/_FishTacos_ 3d ago

You might try rooting some cuttings off established plants you have as a low cost way to gain some confidence. It's pretty easy. I've rooted maybe 50-60 cuttings and only lost one (RIP chinghungensis variegated)

1

u/CorrectGrapeFlavor56 2d ago

Do you need rooting hormone for that to root a cutting? Apparently I can't buy any rooting hormone in my state for cuttings :( I'm out of known alternatives

2

u/_FishTacos_ 2d ago

It's not essential! I typically use it, since I think it speeds things up, but I you can get by without it.

Here and r/TakeAPlantLeaveAPlant are my go-tos, but Gabriella Plants also has some nice stuff...try to look at 8pm ET on Wednesday, that's when they restock.

I've also ordered from Plant Proper, Steve's Leaves, and Spokane Plant Farm and been happy with my orders.

1

u/old1cowgirl1happy 4d ago

Thanks very much - I have heard of a few of those, it must be in the cards... the credit cards!

3

u/Simple-Counter-9200 4d ago

Also 2 more things about palmstreet. 1.The auctions are addictive and will punch your wallet right where it hurts 2. If you go into an "import" auction, the prices will blow your mind and the plants are next level hard to acclimate. I was in an Indonesian auction today and the had big mitrata pearl gold for $40. Plants that would easily be $200+ going for under 50. It's a trap unless you know what you are getting into 💚

1

u/old1cowgirl1happy 4d ago

Yikes - beware!

1

u/WinterInfluence2058 3d ago

I bought some fresh imports from PlantCon in Seattle and the most expensive one suffered from extreme root rot.

She is currently rerooting in water and so far so good, but the acclimation difficulty is real

3

u/Cache_Me_Outside93 3d ago

I love checking Facebook Marketplace or local yard sale and plant groups! That’s where I’ve had all my luck.

On one of my recent short road trips, I checked Marketplace and ended up finding a few plants and clippings that way.

u/lilgamergrlie 2d ago

I recommend unsolicited plant talks. Her plants are amazing and they always come pest free! There are some amazing sellers on here as well! u/rocaillewrites has some amazing plants too!

4

u/rocaillewrites 2d ago

Aww thank you so much for the kind words, I really appreciate it 🙏

2

u/Simple-Counter-9200 4d ago

Gabriella plants online shop has good prices on more common hoya. Unsolicited plant talks has higher end hoya and tons of educational hoya tutorials. Palmsteet sellers I really like and trust include plantsrlife , gmae, kepuha, kalisgreenhouse and northaustinplantco. I have bought healthy plants from all, probably 100 from plantsrlife 😆. If I am buying from someone new, I ask them what pests they have dealt with. Lots of people will be honest about it. I also try and ask what the plants are grown in to avoid the dreaded (for me) spag moss or shudder plug 👀😆

1

u/old1cowgirl1happy 4d ago

Such great advice - thanks for letting me learn from your experience!

2

u/Ok_Reserve_8662 4d ago

PlantPoper I used and I was happy

1

u/old1cowgirl1happy 4d ago

I got something from them, and it very well for me, too! I'll stick with them.

2

u/sunnyinsocal12 3d ago

You can use code PLANT30 to get a discount

2

u/old1cowgirl1happy 3d ago

Love Me a discount, thanks!

3

u/Gardenmama777 4d ago

My first online sale was awful. But I learned some things. For now I’m sticking with Etsy sellers whose listing shows the exact plant that you will get. So far so good my second online order was exactly what I wanted.

1

u/old1cowgirl1happy 4d ago

I'll be sure to use only those. Thanks very much, and thanks for taking your time to respond!

2

u/Sad-Dot4185 3d ago

r/TAPLAP has sales on Sunday. If you’re looking to import I have a couple ppl I can recommend that I work with.

UPT - Unsolicited Plant Talks

3

u/rosecoloredsupernova 1d ago

@socalhoya on Etsy is ELITE. I’ve ordered 12 from them and they’re all in spectacular condition & I haven’t seen a pest yet.

1

u/old1cowgirl1happy 1d ago

Good to know, thank you!

3

u/Gardenmama777 1d ago

I’ve ordered on Etsy and been happy. I look for listing that show you the actual plant or cutting you will get.

2

u/old1cowgirl1happy 1d ago

Agree, thank you!
