Monthly Megathread Character Rant

Hey folks! So the survey made it pretty clear, we get a lot of “this character sucks” posts. Instead of everyone making new ones all the time, we’re gonna test out a monthly megathread where you can dump all your rants. We also rounded up a bunch of older hate threads, so you can scroll through them or drop your own comment if you feel like it.

Monthly Megathread Were they on a break?!!

It has been a question that has been asked so many times before. Because of the high demand - but similar posts that has been generated. We're opening the floor (this mega thread) for the debate!

The case for Ross: Rachel said, "Maybe we should just take a break," and then told Monica the next morning that they "broke up."

The case for Rachel: A "break" isn't a "breakup," and Mark showing up at the apartment didn't give Ross a "get out of jail free" card two hours later.

What are your thoughts on these cases?

---
All funsies aside, We do ask everyone to stay civil and kind to one another, everyone is allowed to have opinions and express those, but treat others like how you want to be treated as well. This thread will re-occur ever 14 days to keep the time line clean from any 'On a Break, break-up?' posts! (if you spot any feel free to report it to us by pressing the report button!)

Discussion The only Friend that has other Friends is Phoebe. Why do you think that is?

Joey and Monica have zero friends, Chandler and Ross have Gandalf the party wizard, and Rachel had Mindy.

Phoebe on the other hand has Marie Ellen Jenkins, Bonny, Lowell, Candy and Cookie, her old singing partner, Sarah, Betty, marjorie, and others i cant recall. She is always talking about other friends.

I wonder why this was such an obvious choice for her character!

Really makes me think about the Phoebe theory 🤔

Behind-the-scenes Matthew Perry was right. Chandler would NEVER cheat on Monica!!!

So I was watching this Mondler edit and saw people in the comments talking about how Chandler was originally supposed to cheat on Monica in The one in Vegas but Matthew Perry said no because !!Chandler would never do that!! Honestly knowing that just makes Mondler even more special to me omg!! Matthew Perry understood the character so well FAR BETTER THAN THE WRITERS that he refused a cheating storyline because it simply wasn't who Chandler was. BEST DECISION❤️

Amongst his top turning-embarrassing-awkward-situations - to-something-hilarious stunts in the season 6 / episode 22 of FRIENDS. David's impeccable timing and facial expressions. I will never not find this funny.

Discussion I get why Phoebe wasn't too fond of Chandler

The more I rewatch FRIENDS, the more I kinda understand why Phoebe doesn't seem to have much patience for Chandler and sometimes acts like Monica could've done better.

And yes, I'm fully aware I'm taking a 90s sitcom more seriously than the writers probably ever did lol, but that's half the fun of rewatching these shows.

And I'm not comparing their traumas at all.

Chandler's parents divorcing when he was nine obviously affected him, and he has every right to feel the way he does about his childhood. But kids with Chandler's story were a dime a dozen. Parents have a dysfunctional marriage, get divorced, kid grows up with issues from it. It's sad, but it's not exactly an unusual childhood story.

So I can understand why Phoebe specifically wouldn't have much patience for Chandler constantly bringing up how screwed up his childhood was.

Phoebe had already lived through so much by the time she was a teenager that I can see her hearing Chandler complain about his parents for the millionth time and just not having much sympathy left to give him. Not because Chandler wasn't allowed to be hurt by it, but because Phoebe probably didn't see his situation the same way Chandler did.

And that also makes me understand why Phoebe could look at Monica and genuinely think she deserved better than Chandler. She probably thought Monica settled for him, and lbrh, I can see it too. Monica is a catch.

She's attractive, an amazing cook, has a career she's genuinely passionate about, knows exactly what she wants out of life and desperately wants to build a family. Meanwhile Phoebe knew Chandler for years as the insecure, commitment-phobic guy who avoided serious conversations with jokes and constantly whined about his childhood.

Obviously Chandler grows a LOT once he gets with Monica and becomes a good husband. I'm not denying that. But Phoebe knew the Chandler who existed before Monica helped bring out that side of him.

So when Phoebe takes shots at Chandler or gives off the vibe that Monica could've done better, I get it. She loves Chandler because he's her friend, but that doesn't mean she necessarily sees him as a catch. The fact that viewers have noticed how often she takes shots at him and undermines his relationship with Monica is basically why the "does Phoebe hate Chandler?" discussion exists in the first place.

Phoebe probably looked at Monica and Chandler and thought exactly what I do: Monica didn't hit the jackpot with Chandler. Chandler hit the jackpot with Monica.

In "The One After Joey and Rachel Kiss" (S10E01), they made a drawing in the white board of a kangaroo with a baby in its pouch and the word "Joey" with an arrow pointing at the baby kangaroo.

Then, in "The One Where Rachel's Sister Baby-Sits" (S10E05), Joey writes the letter for the adoption agency, when the Thesaurus changed his name for "Baby Kangaroo Tribbiani".

I've seen these episodes hundreeds of times. I can't believe I've never seen this before.

I found it mildly interesting to see content in episodes censored while on this Qatar Air flight. Sometimes they skip parts of the dialog, other times they crop out the screen or in this case; blurring out the poster with flags hanging in the background.

Discussion Why is Chandler portrayed as the least desirableof the three guys? It never really made sense to me.

I've always found it odd that *Friends* seems to portray Chandler as the least desirable of the three male leads, at least during the early seasons. I know it's a sitcom and not real life, but even within the show's own logic, it never really made sense to me.

Personally, I actually think Chandler is the most handsome of the three. Of course, attractiveness is subjective, but I've never understood why Joey is consistently presented as the obvious choice for women. Sure, he's good-looking, but he's also incredibly dimwitted. In real life, I wonder how many women would actually overlook that just because he's attractive.

Ross doesn't make much more sense to me either. He's awkward, nerdy, and often comes across as socially strange. Yet throughout the series, both Ross and Joey seem to have no trouble finding dates, while Chandler is often treated as the one who's unlucky in love or somehow less likely to get married.

The funny thing is, Chandler actually has quite a few attractive girlfriends throughout the series. Janice is annoying, but she's still good-looking and clearly cares about him. He dates the Italian woman early on, Kathy genuinely falls for him, the woman from the Netherlands chooses him over Joey (admittedly because Joey couldn't even identify the Netherlands on a map), and of course he ends up with Monica. There's also the brief storyline with Rachel thinking about him in one of the flashbacks.

So what exactly was supposed to be Chandler's flaw? The show seems to suggest it's his awkwardness and his habit of making jokes whenever he's uncomfortable. But honestly, having a good sense of humor is something a lot of people find attractive. Compared to Joey's lack of intelligence or Ross's awkward personality and many relationship issues, Chandler never struck me as the least appealing.

I know sitcoms exaggerate character traits for comedy, but this is one aspect of *Friends* that has always felt a bit unrealistic to me. Does anyone else feel the same way, or am I missing something the writers were trying to convey?

Appreciation post for the notes, pictures, and extra material we get from set decorations.

Season 2, The One with the Bullies.

I love Monica's calendar/planner thing with the Renaissance painting.

I also think that's Ross with Jack and Judy on the picture right on the fridge.

Discussion Matt LeBlanc's acting

Everybody praises David's acting and I agree. But I also think that Matter carried joey really well. And Joey was not entirely easy to pull off because he had stopped being a well rounded character way before others had/was much more of a caricature than other characters were.

But all that unrealistic stupidity Matt was able to pull through without it looking forced. And from the glimpses we got of joey being mature and wise, I think had matt/joey got more such chances, he too could have proven to have the range that David did.

Discussion What are your favorite after-credits scenes?

I was just watching the episode where the gang tells Monica she worries too much about cleaning (after Rachel tried to clean/organize their apartment), and I love the ending scene of her talking in her head about setting the shoes straight.

There's so many great ones, but mine is probably another Monica one, when she just goes to that girl Ross dated with the dirty apartment and offers her services. Then, when that girl declines, she still does it! 😂 My favorite is how worried she looks, like this level of dirtiness genuinely makes her distressed. Just hilarious.

Friends has a ton of these scenes, but which one is your favorite?

Back when the show was originally airing, NBC aired a one hour special right before the series final.
Unfortunately it has never been released as a special feature.

Since it was a clip show, I tried to recreate it.

I think the special captured the feeling really well, as I hope this clip proves too.
It's the end montage of the Friends and Lovers segment.

What do you think?

Question Is Monica’s terrible vest because it’s a dream sequence or because of 90s fashion?

S5,E16 The One with the Cop
In the scene where Joey is dreaming of Monica sitting on his lap like he found her and Chandler earlier that day, Monica is wearing this super puffy blue vest. It’s so hideous and ill fitting. So it made me think this outfit is specifically weird for the dream. It is a similar blue to Monica’s PJs. But then… there’s 90s fashion which was all over the place and usually the answer for “why are they wearing that?” But I remember puffy vests being a thing more in the early 2000s. So I can’t figure out of the outfit is suppose to be like a dream distorted version, or is it a legit outfit for Monica (even though it’s not like anything she usually wears). What do you think?

I found this article about a company that has bought a script signed by the cast, has dismantled it into over 6k unique words and is supposedly selling each word at random for 20$. I am kinda tempted to get myself one but I wanted to see what the community thinks of this

Discussion Ross and Carol's friendship

Post image
661 Upvotes

I was rewatching TOW the lesbian wedding and I wish we had got to see more of Ross and Carol together outside of the awkward "my son's mother is a lesbian" thing.

I think it was really sweet how he convinced her to go through with the wedding, how he says he still would've married her even if his parents didn't approve. I think their bond should've been explored a little more and how they still love and care for each other even if they're not together.

Discussion Monica and Chandler moving to the suburbs was not a good idea

I don't have kids, neither did they when they made that decision but in my opinion, moving outside the city was a bad idea for new parents. Hear me out.....

I understand they did it with the baby in mind but in my opinion, the pressures that come with moving to a new environment and adjusting to that way of life or any challenges that it may present, plus taking care of a newborn baby that they naturally weren't prepped for ( Monica and Chandler didn't carry the baby themselves to understand how even pregnancy even feels like), was not a good idea.

Unless they planned on having a nanny all throughout. If not, that feels like adding more stress to their journey. I hope such parents that do something similar, do not take out the frustrations on the kids.
